    2017 Sadie Family Swartland Palladius
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Sadie's signature white, Palladius, is a blend of all eleven of Swartland's official white varieties, with old, bush-vine Chenin Blanc playing the principal role. The idea is to produce a great white that represents the overall terroir of Swartland (as much as this is possible) and to use all of the permitted varieties. As a result, this is harvested from seventeen separate vineyard sites, with the full list of grapes comprising: Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon, Palomino and Colombard, as well as the hyper-rare Semillon Gris (which plays a key role in Sadie's Kokerboom and T'Voetpad Old Vine Series cuvées). Scattered throughout the Swartland, most of the vineyards are rooted in decomposed Paardeberg Granite (although four parcels lie on sandstone) and qualify for old vine status (35-plus years with the oldest vines planted in 1935). The younger fruit comes from Sadie's own plantings, though even here the yields max out at 22 hl/ha.

    Other Reviews....
The 2016 Palladius comes from 17 different vineyards and was fermented in clay amphora and concrete egg and aged for first year, then racked and aged for additional year in old foudres prior to bottling. It has a well defined bouquet, quite neutral in style but blossoming with aeration to reveal hints of lanolin and melted candle wax. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, touches of curry leaf and spice and orange peel. A long tail on the finish of white pepper and sage completes this wonderful Palladius.

Broad and lush in feel, featuring creamed melon, pear and yellow apple fruit flavors, framed by warm meringue, white ginger and brioche notes. The long finish flows nicely.

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

    Other Reviews....
Lively and pure, the Petit Chablis from Samuel Billaud is reminiscent of more focused wines from Kimmeridgian soils. The aromas range from gooseberry to lemon peel and white peaches; there is a distinct flinty mineral note. The texture is not heavy, but the finish has surprising persistence. The grapes are from a parcel of 0.60ha planted by his father in 1976 on the Portlandian plateau at the top of the grand cru slope of Sur Les Clos. Drink 2024-2030.

A smoky nose of mineral reduction, essence of pear, green apple and a touch of iodine precede racy, intense and chiseled middle weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced and lingering finale. This agreeably dry effort could use better depth so 2 to 3 years of keeping should be helpful. Drink through 2027+.

Samuel Billaud’s 2023 Petit Chablis derives from 40-year-old vines in Sur les Clos, based on Portlandian limestone. It wafts from the glass with aromas of lemon zest, oyster shell, acacia and a hint of youthful reduction. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and taut and more mineral-driven than fruity, a considerable performance for the appellation. Drink 2025-2034.

The 2023 Petit Chablis Sur Les Clos comes from Billaud's fathers vines planted in 1976. It has a bright nose like the Bourgogne d'Or with yellow plum and light flinty aromas. The palate is quite sharp on the entry with good weight, perhaps not quite the length of the 2022, but there is tension throughout. Fine. Drink 2025-2029.

To bottle before the harvest. Vines from 1976 on 41B rootstock, a windy site with some kimmeridgian soil. Pale lemon. A fine classy dry fruit on the nose. Delicious salinity, one of the best examples. Drink from 2025-2027.

Restrained aromas of citrus confit, iodine, spice and apple give way to strikingly textured and slightly denser medium-bodied flavors that flash evident power that builds on the bitter lemon-inflected finish that is markedly dry, sleek and balanced. The Billaud Séchet is virtually always excellent and the 2023 vintage should be no exception. Drink through 2031+.

Another brilliant wine from Samuel Billaud, and one of the most classically Chablisien in character, the 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Séchet Vieilles Vignes derives from 90-year-old vines, the oldest of the domaine, and is aged entirely in steel for 18 months. Opening in the glass to reveal a bouquet of lemon zest, oyster shell, white flowers and crushed chalk, it’s compact and chiseled, with extraordinary purity, a bright, incisive line of acidity and a strikingly sapid, mouthwatering finish. Chablis purists will want to seek this out urgently, as it ranks among Billaud’s finest premiers crus this year.

The 2023 Chablis Les Séchets 1er Cru has a detailed and mineral-driven bouquet that evokes images of the dark and stormy sea. This has wonderful salinity—it really benefits from no wood contact. The palate is old-school Chablis, with green apple and pear scents. It's a little strict, yet there is real depth and grip here. The 2023 is very complex and long on the finish, but it’s 100% Chablis in style. Outstanding. Drink 2026-2042.

Planted by Samuel’s grandmother in the 1930s, yielding 40/45 hl/ha in 2023, the Séchets will be kept on lees in stainless steel for a full 18 months. Marvellous intensity right across the palate, once again a truly brilliant wine from Samuel. Beautifully dry finish to a wine that is so full of fruit. Drink from 2028-2035.

A ripe and nicely fresh nose combines notes of mostly citrus and white orchard fruit. There is both solid volume and energy to the delicious middleweight flavors that conclude in a refreshing, nicely dry and zesty finish where a touch of spritz slowly appears. This offers good quality for its level. Drink through 2024+.

The 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay is the usual blend of Auxerrois and Mâconnais must, and it has turned out nicely, delivering aromas of pears, apples, white flowers and fresh bread, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's pure and charming, nodding more to the south than the north this year. The 2022 Bourgogne d'Or, a blend between Mâcon Nord and Auxerrois, has a fragrant nose with hints of melted butter and yellow flowers and a touch of vanilla pod in the background. The palate is well-balanced with a pleasant "bite" on the entry, fresh and tangy, with a hint of marmalade on the finish. Drink 2023-2027.

This is a 6,000 bottle cuvée, bottled a month ago, the usual blend of half Mâconnais and half Auxerrois. A clear pale colour, with a fresh vinous nose, some melon character, no more than medium bodied, yet with a fresh finish. Drink from 2023-2024.

There is plenty of classic Chablis typicity to the ripe yet cool and fresh aromas of lemon-lime and iodine. The racy and attractively textured flavors exude evident minerality and particularly so on the focused, linear and youthfully austere finale. Moderate reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background today. Samuel Billaud’s 2023 Chablis Village is sourced from three plots, two on the left bank and one on the right bank. Opening in the glass with notes of tangerine zest, bread and beeswax, this wine is medium to full-bodied, rather tightly wound and laden with tangy acidity and concludes with a long, saline finish. A blend of Samuel’s three excellent terroirs, Les Pargues, Cartes-Fontenottes, and Bas de Chapelot. Pale colour. A very classic nose, not too pungently marine, with a depth of fruit, clean clear cut white fruit with a real crispness to finish. The lees work is exemplary. Drink from 2025-2028.

There is a great purity to the aromas of nectarine and lemon peel in the delicious village Chablis from Samuel Billaud. It's lively and fresh, with a tension that carries the wine to a lingering finish. The grapes are from three parcels: two on the left bank – Pargues (near Préhy) and the back side of the Montmains slope – and on the right bank, vines at the base of Montée de Tonnerre. The cool and reticent nose reluctantly but clearly confirms that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis, particularly with the prominent quinine influence on the aromas of lemon confit. The dense, palate soaking and powerful yet refined flavors deliver stunningly good length on the super-sleek and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is terrific and it's not often that Séchet can best a fine Montée de Tonnerre but in 2022, it appears to have done so. The 2022 Chablis Les Séchets 1er Cru has a potent lime, lemon zest and oyster shell scented bouquet that has plenty of vigor. The palate is very well balanced with a sapid entry, and fine weight. It is the most compact of Billaud's Premier Crus and will therefore require more time in bottle. It will be worth the wait though. Drink 2027-2045.

A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock. Although it ages as well as Montée de Tonnerre, Billaud's Séchet will finish in a different place. Matured only in stainless steel for 18 months on lees with one racking, it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit, touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. Drink 2025 - 2031.

As one would expect in a vintage like 2022, there is a suggestion of the exotic lurking in the background of the ripe nose of white-fleshed fruit, wet stone and shellfish scents. The rich, full-bodied and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering fine length on the balanced finale. This does however need to develop more depth though that should reasonably occur if allowed at least a few years of bottle aging. Worth checking out. Drink through 2030+.

Bottled in May after 18 months. Clear pale colour with a little light lime touch. This stands back, suggesting that it really needs to be kept. Samuel Billaud has moved to DIAM 30 with that in mind. Exceptional density, based around the dry extract, a little lick of oak, this has barely begun to touch its full potential. An elegant, pure and beautifully airy nose presents ripe but wonderfully fresh aromas of mineral reduction, acacia blossom and oyster shell trimmed in enough wood to merit mentioning. The racy and borderline painfully intense middleweight flavors exude a bracing minerality that adds a sense of lift to the detailed, focused and lingering finale that is neither especially dry nor austere. This is aromatically quite similar to the Bougros with ample wood if a bit more floral and citrus elements in play. The sleeker and finer medium-bodied flavors also possess excellent volume as well as more evident minerality that adds lift to the attractively textured and sneaky long back. The 2022 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru, located mid-slope from 30-35-year-old vines, has a very complex bouquet: Granny Smiths, struck flint, hints of oyster shell and seaweed developing with time in the glass. Described by Vinous Media wine critic Ian D'Agata as the 'DRC of Moscato d'Asti', this is a captivating example of Moscato. A frisky spritz flows through the water coloured base that has a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Fragrant scents of grape juice, pineapple, rosewater and musk leap out of the glass with whiffs of orange blossom also evident. Luscious sultana grape, tropical fruit and musk flavours dance across the energized palate with a light airy feel. Some juicy mango fruits also chime in. Refreshing acidity with a long effervescent finish.

375ml here. Gary Sweet here reporting for duty. A lot of moscato is kind of awful, but the good ones are delightful. Happy to say this falls into the latter category.
Peach iced tea, mint, a slightly savoury almond and nutty edge, some rosewater perfume. It’s sweet but finds balance with a tight cut of acidity, tingly bubbles, and heaven forbid, it also has a gently phenolic grip to it, and again that almost marzipan richness on a finish of good length, with a peach fuzz and white grape freshness to close. Benchmark stuff. Proper moscato. A sugar rush, yes, but so balanced and good to drink. YUM. Drink 2026-2027.

Fresh, vibrant aromatics, full of sweet peaches, orange citrus, orange blossom and fresh carnival grapes. Fine, creamy mousse on the sweet but fresh palate with plenty of sweet lemons and melon. A solid, well-balanced Moscato d’Asti. Drink now.

“Aww, nectar”, quips GW. We’re drinking this in the sun with our shirts off in our y-fronts and foil reflectors under our chins with cucumber rounds on our eyes. How moscato should be drunk.
It’s brilliant drinking, peachy iced tea, a little loose, wild honey character, some preserved lemon, a lick of chalky minerality too in a light pucker somewhere in there. Refreshing, clean, quite concentrated and with very light frizz of tickly bubbles barely there. A vibrant, expressive and true-to-style rendition. “Needs some ice”, GW says as he rolls over to sun his bum. Perfect. Drink 2023-2025.

Bright pale straw to straw colour with distinct highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Alluring rosewater top notes are followed by lychee and citrus fruits with some oily toast and ginger spice notes in the background. Still retaining plenty of freshness, focused pear, citrus and more subtle lychee fruits are to the fore underpinned by crisp acidity. Some lemon butter characters and ginger spice the back drop. Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

Planned to be a Kabinett that finally got too ripe (100° Oechsle), the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and intense on the nose. Juicy and quite rich on the palate, this is a piquant and acidity-driven Spätlese with an enormously piquant and salty finish. Picke din the first week of October, it has laser sharp acidity that cuts through the rich texture that is based on 15% to 18% botrytis fruit. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Hang on to your hat. With its enormous ripeness and brilliant acidity, this monumental wine defies the limits of the Spätlese category. None of the exotic fruit that’s so typical for 2019, rather you're in the kingdom of the peach here ! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * was made from fruit harvested at 100° Oechsle and fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (81 g/l). It exhibits some smoky, minty, and ripe scents of pear, quince, almond cream, lavender, pineapple, and smoke on the nose. The wine reveals a more exotic and animating side on the delicate and subtly smooth palate, and leaves one with a feeling of presence and intensity, but all focused and chiseled in the long finish. Drink 2026-2039.

Fermented in glass balloon for 22 months and bottled at the end of August this year, the 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is highly concentrated yet pure and spicy/stony on the apricot-scented nose that is enormously detailed and refined for this class. Enormously rich and juicy-piquant on the palate, this is a fantastically precise and stimulating TBA that will become a legend years from now. This is a perfectly balanced noble sweet wine with unreal precision. Picked with 201° Oechsle and bottled with nearly 7% alcohol, 318 grams of residual sugar and 11.5 grams of total acidity. Tasted from AP 22 20 in September 2020. Drink 2030 - 2100.

The 2018er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was harvested at 201° Oechsle and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers an absolutely magnificent and deeply complex nose of apricot, apple jelly, honey, marzipan, almond paste, coconut cream, dried apricot, and even a hint of floral nuances. Despite its richness and impressive levels of residual sugar, it proves crystal clear on the palate and rewards one with plenty of yellow honeyed fruits delivered with creamy and unctuous viscosity. Ripe, pure, and zesty acidity runs through the wine and gives it great focus and intensity right into the incredibly long finish. This TBA is simply stellar! Drink 2038-2118.

The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese * is perfectly concentrated and refined on the nose with its aromas of stewed peach, fine botrytis and even slate. Lush, beautifully fine and finessed on the palate, this is a salty-piquant, fresh and highly delicate Beerenauslese with stimulating salinity and citrus fruit. This is a beauty of great finesse and elegance. Bottled with 6.5% alcohol (in 375-milliliter bottles), it's not sticky or sweet at all but is endlessly salty. A beauty. Tasted in March 2019.

This “one-star” BA has a “no-star” counterpart which I did not taste. “They were both very good and would have made an outstanding blend,” said Selbach, “but this lot exhibited a tick more finesse,” so he opted for separate bottlings, of which this one constituted 200 liters. White raisin and apple jelly are accompanied on the nose by prickle of lemon peel and radish, then pick up brown spices, honey, hazelnut paste and mango chutney on a viscous yet buoyant palate, leading to a vibrant, superbly multifaceted and ravishingly sustained finish. Drink 2019 - 2060.

The 2017er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * was harvested at a massive 155° Oechsle, i.e. already in TBA territory. It displays an immensely complex nose made of nut paste, raisin, candied grapefruit, mango, smoke, vanilla and bergamot. The wine is superbly aromatic on the palate where it delivers mango, honey, raisin, plum, nut paste, apple jelly and orange jam with remarkable presence and delicacy. The finish proves hugely pure and immensely long. The combination of density and finesse defies all logic. What a great dessert wine in the making! Drink 2027-2067.

The 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese displays an intense but very clear and radiant citrus color in the glass. The nose is concentrated and fresh, with lemon chutney and broken stone aromas. Pure and fresh on the palate, this is a dense, concentrated, rich yet very precise, fresh and elegant BA with a long, crunchy, terroir-driven finish that represents the delicate slate structure of the Sonnenuhr. Still young but not really sweet due to the crystalline acidity structure. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2028 - 2080.

Concentrated and textural yet zingy in its feel with a long saline infused finish.

Verdicchio has historical roots dating back to well before the 7th century, putting this grape amongst a handful of truly indigenous Italian grape varieties. The mineral-rich ancient clay-based limestone soils that are unique to Le Marche’s territory are a key factor that enables Verdicchio to thrive. The vineyard climate is influenced heavily by the Apennines Mountain ranges, there is more of a protected continental climate here resulting in large temperature variations between day and night that maintain acidity and freshness in the grape -a perfect place for long time Italian enologist Stefano Zolito grow his pure, crystalline Verdicchio.

Pear and red apple skin aromas mix with hints of mango, faint honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. A Tuscan dry white that’s ripe and quite round in the mouth with a saline like minerality underpinning.

The island of Elba is the largest in the Tuscan archipelago and Italy’s third largest after Sicily and Sardinia. Tenuta La Chiusa overlooks the gulf of Portoferraio and takes its name from the walls which enclose its twenty hectares of vineyards and olive groves. Napoleon Bonaparte, who was twice exiled to the island, stayed at La Chiusa on two separate occasions.
A blend of Vermentino, Procanico (Trebbiano) and Ansonica (inzolia), fermented together and aged on lees in stainless for a few months with no malo. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Pear, green apple skin and lime scents emerge out of the glass followed by some fresh herb and stony mineral notes. Ripe and quite round in the mouth, the palate features fleshy pear, peach and red apple fruits over a wet stone and saline like minerality. Crisp acidity with a long textural finish.

Théo Dancer is the ambitious and tallented winemaker now heading up the family Domaine Vincent Dancer winery based in Chassagne-Montrachet. Like his father before him, Théo studied at Lycée Viticole de Beaune while working with his father part-time. He joined the domaine full-time in 2021 and is already making a significant impact. In addition to his work with his father, Théo has also taken on an exciting new project in the Mâconnais (Roc Breïa) as well as starting his own micro-négoce, sourcing fruit from several exciting vineyards across northern France.

Emphasising purity and terroir rather than flor-aging notes, this is Savagnin ouillé (topped up) sourced from the fossil-rich marl soils of L’Étoile, in Jura’s southwest. The grapes were pressed and put directly into large oak barrels.

Based in Savennieres, Thibaud Boudignon is one of the new young stars of the Loire Valley. In addition to his prime plots in Savennieres, Thibaud also owns two small vineyards across the river on the south side of the Loire in the Anjou. Thibaud has worked with Philippe Charlopin in Gevrey Chambertin, Chateau Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux (amongst others) and also in Australia before settling in the Loire, thereby building up a wealth of experience without having been born into a wine producing family. Working organically in the vineyards he harvests by hand making successive tries throughout each vineyard ending with yields that are much lower than the appellation rules allow. In the winery the grapes are whole bunch pressed with no settling and the juice is kept cold before starting a long slow fermentation. He vinifies with natural yeasts and ages the wines on lees with minimal SO2 in a mixture of barrels ranging from 300-600 litres.

Situated in the commune of La Possonnière, the Clos de la Hutte is an ancient religious site of 7 hectares, of which 2.6 are planted with vines. At the heart of this ancient monastery are vines produced from a massal selection of Chenin Blanc coming from the best domaines of the Loire. Vinification occurs in 50% oval demi muid, 25% in 320 liter cigars, and 25% in 500 liter barriques. The ageing lasts one year in wood and a minimum of 3 months in stainless steel.

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 Savennières Clos de la Hutte offers an intense, complex and elegant nose that combines mineral depth and purity with the fruit generosity of the vintage. Still from very young vines—just seven years old—on solid schist and vinified in equal parts in 350- and 500-liter barrels (15% new), this is a full-bodied, intense and juicy yet pure, vital, surprisingly fresh and persistently mineral-driven Chenin with fine tannins from La Possonnière. Bottled with a moderate 12% stated alcohol but lots of intensity and structure. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2024-2038.

This Clos Fremine site adjoins Clos de la Hutte separated only by stone walls surrounding each Clos and a tiny road between and is planted to 1.5ha of vines from massale selection, with the original material coming from vines of more than 100 years old. Sloping towards the Loire the soils have a fine cover of sand blown over the underlying schist across many millenia which conveys a silky elegance to the resulting wine, giving more immediacy and enabling this wine to be appreciated in its youth.

    Other Reviews....
Thibaud planted the vineyard only in 2014 and aged his 2018 Savennières Clos de Frémine in 350- and 500-liter barrels (10% new). The result is stunning. The wine opens with a dense and finely yeasty nose with deeper layers of crushed crystalline rocks, perfectly ripe and fleshy Chenin fruit and very discreet hints of mocha and nougat. Generous but playful, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a textural and stimulatingly salty young Savennières with lush fruit and lingering, palate-tickling and stimulating salinity that gives a crisp, pure, almost Riesling-like and bitter finish. It is a remarkably fresh and filigreed but textured Chenin for such a warm vintage. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2022-2032.

This tiny site of 0.5 ha on soils of clay over purple schist and granite lies high above Chateau de Varennes not far from La Roche aux Moines. Thibaud bought and renovated this plot in 2014. This small vineyard is enclosed by trees on all sides so it is a peaceful space where one hears only the birds. "La Vigne Cendrée", in spite of its small surface is an exceptional mosaic of terroir : purple schist, granite and clay silt. Because of the clay and the southern exposition, this wine is naturally richer. Half is aged in 226 litre burgundy barrels and half in foudre, with no new wood, for 12 months.

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 Savennières La Vigne Cendrée (cinder or ash vine) comes from three-year-old vines in a small, south-facing vineyard with a complex terroir changing from purple schist to granite to clayey silt. It was vinified naturally in Burgundian barrels and in foudre for 12 months, with no new oak, and bottled with 12% alcohol. The wine opens with intense but also pure, delicate, floral-scented fruit that is absolutely alluring in its slatey fragrancy and spiciness. On the palate, this medium-weight Chenin is pure, clear, fresh, light-footed, remarkably filigreed and finessed but also dense and intense, celebrating delicate and elegant Chenin fruit. What a beautiful drinking pleasure! This is a frisky, vital, energetic, minerally grippy and stimulatingly tensioned, sustainably salty and palate-tickling Savennières in the leaner, fresher, classical style. A pretty fabulous result for such a young vineyard in such a dramatically dry and hot vintage. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2022-2033.

Matured with 30% new oak, the 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte was made with grapes grown in clay topsoil with schists. It exhales a perfumed, precise bouquet with aromas of pineapple, lemon oil, spring flowers and spices. The full-bodied, seamless and layered, crystalline and pure, concentrated and mineral palate has a delicate core of fruit and a tense, saline finish. This pristine wine represents the essence of this great terroir. Drink 2023-2053.

The 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is never the most aromatic, but after a year in bottle, it is starting to reveal a little more of its true self—but only just. It remains a tight cloud of wine that blossoms in the mouth, seamless and round. It possesses excellent texture, substance and richness yet manages it in a not-heavy manner. Nectarine and tangerine fruit flavors linger on the textured finish, which holds the mouth with an assured clasp. This is still not yet ready to drink, but its quality is there to see. It just needs more time to come out from its hiding place; just be a little more patient, if you can. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2022 Savennières Clos de Fremine has purity and tranquility; it's a cloud of Chenin Blanc blossoming in the mouth. There were a lot of grapes that didn't make the grade in 2022 due to the hot, dry conditions of the season, but the strict sorting implemented by Boudignon and team appears to have done the trick. The wine is gently fresh, but a salty line provides persistence. An appetizing fragrance of chamomile, honey and nectarine lingers long in the mouth. Drink 2025-2037.

Move over Luther Vandross, Thibaud Boudignon is in town and the Clos de la Hutte makes you want to slow dance with it. The 2020 is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a former monastery. Aged in larger format barrels, there's no sense of oakiness, allowing the purity of this wine to shine bright. Drink 2023-2042.

Named in honour of his mother Françoise, who passed away when Thibaud was 17, and his father François, Anjou Blanc a Francois(e)… is an electric and powerful expression of Chenin Blanc. Hailing from the same vineyard in St-Lambert-du-Lattay as his regular Anjou Blanc, this however sees fermentation in wood including some 300L cigares, used to build lees complexity. Maturation then occurs in these cigares along with 700L demi-muids (30% new) for 15–18 months.

The 2020 Anjou Blanc à Francois(e) has the purity of mountain air. Hailing from a single parcel named Les Gats, it is a mid-weight style that's not about aromatic appeal but texture. From a clay-based vineyard, this is one of the more weighty, rounded styles that Boudignon produces with a structured frame that clamps the mouth and acidity that pierces the wine's core like an arrow. There's no malo at this estate which somewhat explains its character. Drink 2022-2037.

Here the ripe aromas are completely dominated by sulfur which understandably blurs the nuance. More interesting are the super-sleek and beautifully well-detailed flavors that exhibit fine punch on the citrusy and agreeably dry but somewhat one-dimensional finish. This is awkward today though there does not appear to be any particular reason that it shouldn't properly clean up. Drink 2027+.

The 2019 Meursault Blagny 1er Cru, which comes from the same climat as the red (though that cannot be stated on the label), has a well-defined, fragrant praline and almond-tinged bouquet. The palate is taut and fresh with a fine bead of acidity. Lightly spiced with ginger and a touch of rhubarb, it feels quite linear at the moment and does not quite kick on toward the finish. Give it the benefit of the doubt and afford it 2–3 years in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2034.

Pale lemon and lime. A more restrained nose, far from the madding crowd of 2019, this Meursault-Blagny has kept its freshness. It offers greater tensile strength than the village Meursault, but not significantly more volume. Lemon apple finish.
