There's only one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, but the resulting wine is lovely, revealing aromas of pear, orange oil, nutmeg and clove, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate. Unfortunately, I imagine securing even a bottle or two will be a considerable challenge.

1x 350 litre barrel, unracked, from Les Fairendes. The oak is quite marked at the moment but there is easily enough fruit to cover it. A rumbustious approach with a gorgeous volume of fruit plus of course the oak backing. That will be cleaned up before bottling and this will be excellent. Drink from 2026-2033.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. Saline and finessed on the palate, this is a tightly structured pure and tensioned dry Riesling with lots of salinity but also ripe and fleshy fruit with fine tannins, both representing a warm, ripe vintage. It is very long and saline on the pure and youthful finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Drink 2024-2028.

Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. There are fine tannins and bitters on the aftertaste. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2027 - 2047.

On the palate, this is an intense and juicy yet refined and elegant Riesling from Ruppertsberg. The finish is crystalline and pure, with a lingering salty flavor, but also powerful and aromatic.

The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

Has a lot of lemon balm, quince and dried herb character with a touch of something buttery. Slippery texture, chewy, dense and long. Powerful and expressive. Slick and luscious yet maintains its dryness and shows poise. Serious white wine, built for contemplation. Drink 2022 - 2026.

Steen is of course the old South African name for chenin blanc. This comes from an old vine parcel. Au naturale winemaking of course, from one of South Africa’s most notable winemakers, and one who was part of a revolution for avant garde and premium wine from the country.
High toned green herb, floral and appley aromas and flavours, a good deal of saline nuttiness and wheatgerm savouriness. It’s very concentrated and decidedly savoury, preserved lemon but with a huge, oatmeal savouriness to taste and chewy, powdery-minerally feel. Great intensity and yet control. Outstanding. Drink 2022 - 2028.

A more complex if moderately similar nose offers more in the way of white orchard fruit aromas that are trimmed in subtle wood nuances. There is fine mid-palate density to the delicious and appealingly intense medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by bright acidity on the bitter lemon-inflected finale that displays excellent length for its level. This too could use better depth, but more should reasonably develop. Lovely.

Cool and airy aromas feature those of green apple, lemon-lime and a hint of petrol. The nicely rich and concentrated middleweight flavors possess a caressing, even seductive, mouthfeel while culminating in a clean, dry and sneaky long finale. This well-made effort could use better depth so a year or two of keeping should prove helpful in that regard.

Hemelrand Vine Garden is a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions, as the idea behind is to bottle a wine just as the vineyard produces it. The Hemelrand vineyard, situated on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone, was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. As mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. The 2020 release is composed of 32% Chardonnay, 25% Roussanne, 25% Chenin, 13% Verdelho and 5% Muscat.
The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

The 2021 Hemelrand Vine Garden is one of Chris Alheit's biggest successes and encapsulates everything great about his wine. Initially quite neutral, it reveals wondrous sea spray, honeysuckle, Provençal herbs and hints of powdered chalk on the nose. The palate has exquisite balance, very cohesive and intense, yet the acidity keeps this so fresh with hints of yellow plum, frangipane and quince towards the extended finish. You just want to go back for another sip (and I bet you will). Drink 2024-2042.

Hereafter Here (intentionally similar sounding to year after year, denoting the passage of time) is based on two young vine blocks in Stellenbosch. The main contributor is the Baby Duck vineyard, planted on granite soils on a gentle southern slope in the Polkadraai Hills ward, while the second vineyard is planted in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on deep red soil.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

The 2021 Hereafter Here is a level up from the previous vintage. There's a bit more pizzazz on the nose, more vigour with enticing honeysuckle and orange pith scents. The palate is well balanced with fine concentration, cohesive, not as complex as some of Alheit's other cuvées, yet fresh and saline on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2023-2033.

It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. This year, Chris Alheit had a delightful little surprise in store for me with a vertical of Cartology from 2022 to 2018. Bursting with energetic acidity, the 2021 Cartology Bush Vines is incredibly food friendly but will need one more year to come around. Medium-bodied, the wine is spicy on the mid-palate with a complex and mineral-laced expression before ending with a succulent finish. Start drinking in 2024. Drink 2024 - 2036.

The 2021 Cartology is a worthy follow-up to the 2020. It unfurls gradually on the nose with honeysuckle and light yellow plum and mirabelle scents, a mineral undertow that stealthily gains prominence. The palate is very well balanced with just a killer line of acidity; Nashi pear and yellow plum commingle towards a resinous finish. After 10 minutes, it really beginning to fire on all cylinders - another magnificent Cartology. Superb. Drink 2023-2042.

The 2021 release marries Chenin with 10% Semillon, this is a seamless Western Cape blend, showing flavours of saffron, beeswax, pear, fresh herbs and lemon juice and engaging purity and focus. The 2020 Cartology is blended with 7% Semillon and is essentially an amalgam of Alheit's vineyards, whole bunch pressed and kept on the lees for 12 months. It has a very different nose compared to the "Hereafter Here": more minerality, touches of white tea and broom filtering through the citrus fruit. The palate is very harmonious, spicy and focused, gently building in the mouth towards that finish with a dab of saffron and stem ginger. Wonderful persistence and just a wine that grabs you, demands attention. This is simply outstanding. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2020 Hemelrand Vine Garden comes from a field blend albeit planted in rows that makes it easier to manage. It is aged on the gross lees for 12 months. It has a wonderful bouquet with yellow plum, honeysuckle and a very slight petrolly scent, all supremely well defined. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry, fine tension with a pithy, lightly spiced finish that lingers with touches of stem ginger and fennel. Maybe my pick of Alheit's 2020s? Antonio Fattori is the third generation to grow vines and make wine at his family’s Terrossa estates. Made from fruit grown on the vineyards near Antonio’s home, he picks fruit early, close to a week before most, to retain freshness in 2022, all the fruit was picked in the last week of September. After harvest, the fruit is gently whole bunch pressed and the wine is made entirely in stainless steel.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted pear and red apple skin scents emerge from the glass trailed by some lime, subtle fresh herb and stony mineral notes. Grillo is a grape variety native to Sicily which traditionally was used for the production of Marsala. The Azores Wine Company began in 2010 with winemaker António Maçanita's project to revive the Terrantez do Pico grape, later founded with Filipe Rocha and Paulo Machado. They focus on restoring native Azorean grape varieties, mainly on Pico Island. Here, vines grow in rock cracks at the foothills of a volcanic mountain, close enough to the ocean that locals say you can hear “the crabs singing.” The vineyards are shielded from strong salty winds by rock walls called “currais,” which are believed to be 500 to 1,000 years old which allowed Pico to achieve it's UNESCO World Heritage status.
Less than 100 plants of the nearly extinct Terrantez do Pico grape were known outside the agrarian services collection. This unique variety was in grave danger until António Maçanita began its recovery. Today, it is gradually being replanted, which is great news. This wine showcases the potential of this rare grape in an extreme volcanic terroir, resulting in a mineral, salty wine, encouraging others to help save it from extinction. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested into 20kg baskets, mainly from Pico Island with a small portion from São Miguel Island. They undergo whole bunch pressing and natural racking after 12 hours. The first press is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while the second press is fermented in three-year old barrels (30%). Expect a clean citrus color with an intense floral aroma, featuring notes of tea, bergamot, and iodine.

Fermentation is spontaneous in small stainless steel tanks, with 30% aged for 6 months in barrels on fine lees. Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

This is the latest edition of Vin Jaune W that was a massive success with the first release over a decade ago. The late great whisky producer in Burgundy, Michel Couvreur, has made some fine whiskies aged in Tissot’s Vin Jaune barrels and this wine reverses the concept. Fine Vin Jaune aged in whiskey barrels for almost 7 years. The Vin Jaune is so powerful that the nuances of whisky only adds a gentle facet.

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America. Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added, while a conversation between friends has turned into a partnership with esteemed Burgundian Chardonnay producer Jean-Marc Roulot joining Piero in Patagonia in planting, farming, and vinification of Chardonnay at Chacra.
Located in the Rio Negro Valley in northern Patagonia, Argentina, Bodega Chacra is comprised of 24 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. Piero also values responsible farming as demonstrated by his grandfather at Sassicaia, and each of the vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the fruit is handled the gentlest way possible, with movements transferred by gravity, fermentation occurring in concrete, minimal new oak usage, and no fining or filtration at bottling. Piero's aim is to retain greater purity and transparency, and it's this ability for his wines to so clearly express their origin that's so engaging with Chacra wines. It's also one of the key attributes that only the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across the globe are able to achieve.

Bright, tight, a fine chalky texture, ripe lemon/lime and white peach, a little honeycomb, wax and cashew, but still tense and kind of electric. Length is excellent. Great drinking and a beautiful refined expression of Chardonnay. Touch and go for 96 points really. Drink 2023 - 2030+.

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.
Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.
Mainque is a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot. Mainque Chardonnay comes from 3 parcels of land with a range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. Creamy and long. Subtle and fine. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Very drinkable now, but will improve.

“Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, 3 parcels with varying range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. With early picking, the wines are fermented and aged for 10 months in barrels from Roulot’s domaine in Meursault (30% in concrete eggs, 10% for 9 months in 1st use, 60 % in 2 & 3rd use).” Patagonia Chardonnay here, though likely not from the North Face. I tried the 2018 vintage of this wine and its big sister back in February 2020, and preferred this one at the time for its energy and charm, and now we are on to the 2020 vintage, which I guess was sitting happily on the vine back then.
It’s glossy and gently creamy, but has plenty of flinty energy, cashew and green melon, with a lemon peel and melon rind bitterness, subtle spiced cinnamon oak, almost a green olive flavour and saline character, a whisper of struck match, and a tight preserved lemon finish of fine length. Sophisticated. Lovely to drink. Drink 2021 - 2026+.

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils has built up an estate of 130ha and, collectively, is the largest owner of Grand Crus (12ha) and Premier Crus (74ha) across the Côte d’Or.
Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Filing the nostrils are pronounced scents of peach, dried honey and crème brulee with hints of bacon fat, cashew and citrusy nougat characteristics also evident. Rich with a broad feel across the palate, fleshy peach, dried honey, ripe pear and crème brulee flavours overlay traces of bacon fat, roasted almond and spice. River stone like texture finishing fresh and refined with ample length.

A joint venture between Theresa Breuer, Weingut Bernhard Mehrlein from Oestrich-Winkel and Georg Breuer cellarmaster Markus Lundén. Sourced from three to four different villages around the region to bring diversity, the fruit is whole bunch pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel for approximately 8 months.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct tinge of green to the edges. Aromas of lime, pear and red apple are married to hints of honeysuckle and slatey mineral notes. Scrumptious lime, red apple and subtle orange blossom infusions overlay a crunchy back drop of chalky lemon and wet slate characters. Zippy acidity finishing dry, long and mouth watering. An excellent first up effort from this trio.

The 2019 Riesling/Grüner Veltliner is rather lovely in a serious way. While you might think the combination of these two varieties would create a light, linear style, this is quite the opposite with its rich, savory, dense core of fruit. It’s dry, fresh and firm, with a satisfying bit of grunt on the long, grippy finish. You can expect lingering layers of apple, citrus and spice flavors, but the joy of this wine is truly in its multifaceted textural elements. It continues to improve year on year. Drink 2022 - 2029.

100% Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, fruits sourced from a micro 0.8h parcel sitting at 350 metres above sea level. The wine is fermented and aged in seasoned oak and is also aged for 12 months in barrel. Fermentation is spontaneous and there is a minimum addition of sulphur at bottling.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Intense pear skin, green to red apple and guava scents infused with a mixture of fresh herbs, wet slate and minerals jump out of the glass. Racy juicy pear and green to red apple fruits are underscored by crisp saline like acidity with notions of limes, injections of Mediterranean herbs and flinty mineral characters ensuing. Tense, elegant feel. Finishes dry and crunchy with a long zippy saline and almond laced aftertaste.
