Villa Wolf is the Pfalz estate of Mosel Riesling legend Ernst Loosen. The Pfalz region is in the Rhine river valley in southwest Germany, directly north of France’s Alsace region. The low-lying Haardt mountains protect the area from cold, wet Atlantic weather, making it one of the warmer and drier areas of Germany.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pear and red apple skin aromas are trailed by hints of lime, quince and wet stone. Ripe, fleshy pear and red apple fruits carry good textural volume across the palate with subtle quince, musk and wet stone characters lying underneath. Finishes dry and fresh with brisk acidity leading into a deliciously fruity aftertaste.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, spiced pear and red apple intermix with hints of honeysuckle and orange blossom. Light weight and possessing a river stone like mouth feel, flavours of lime, pear and green apple are dispersed across the palate with traces of mandarin and wet slate lingering through the back half. Finishes dry with crisp, tangy acidity and an elegant, highly energised aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

From a picture-book vintage with an inhomogeneous flowering in later June and picked over two weeks between September 24 and October 7th (beautiful sunshine all the time), the Siefersheim 2020 Heerkretz Riesling GG opens with a discreet but deep and substantial, finely mineral or herbal and flinty/reductive bouquet with intensity and sur lies notes as well as those of broken stones. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and crystalline, saline acidity, this is a generous but classical Heerkretz of great substance and mouth-tickling grip and acidity. Fruity and non-fruity components are in superb balance here, and the finish is salivating. I wish I had some bottles of this wine in my cellar. Do not pass up buying it if you ever have the chance. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from magnum in August 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

This is so delightful in the nose, but there are so many dimensions to the aromas that it's not easy to grasp this, without sinking into this enormously complex wine. The aromas range from leaves and flowers, dripping after a tropical downpour, to ripe stone fruit, all the shades of citrus zest and delicate spice Tightly wound on the very concentrated, silky palate with minerality that's almost off the scale. So saline and so mouthwatering at the super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

What a stunning nose of ripe white and yellow peach, pineapple and grapefruit with a slew of spicy and herbal notes! But that barely prepares you for the breathtaking interplay of super-mineral acidity and the spectacular fruit. All of this is underlined by wonderful salinity that makes this riesling GG almost supernaturally refreshing. So uplifting at the precise and vibrant finish! From organically grown grapes. The 2021 Morstein Riesling GG offers a deep and intense yet pure, nuanced, fresh and highly complex bouquet of crushed limestone, even chalk intertwined with bright, lemon fruit aromas. This bouquet is nothing less than spectacular in all its purity, subtle intensity and depth. The palate is silky, pure and saline, beautifully fine and fresh, very elegant and long yet still discreet and reduced in its expression. However, this is a chalky and lemony Mortsein from a cool year that will gain texture and complexity with bottle age. This will turn out to be a classic, and I can only recommend to buy more than you might think to buy based on the conservative score. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. As deep and dense as it is subtle and mysterious, this very youthful 2021 GG is like a great ocean liner just setting off on a journey across the North Atlantic. And under the keel lie several thousand meters of dark water. Astonishing textural complexity and a very compact core. Enormously layered finish that has all the spice and wild herb aromas we expect from this great site. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Vegan. Drink or hold.

The 2021 vintage has given the bold and generous character of this site a cool herbal element. Next to the ripe mirabelle and melon fruit are notes of licorice and sandalwood. Wittmann's 2020 Aulerde GG proves again that this deep vineyard can have grand cru level in certain vintages, namely the dry and sunny ones. This one opens deep, clear and elegant, with a dusty chalk/clay bouquet intertwined with fine and citric spiciness. Juicy, spicy and piquant on the palate, with fine phenolic grip and a firm and salty, long and elegant finish, this is a terrific, expressive Aulerde and another highlight from this Westhofen terroir after Wittmann's 2019. Tasted from the vat on April 30, 2018. The 2017 Aulerde Riesling GG offers a pure and chalky bouquet of ripe yellow-fleshed, almost tropical fruits along with dashes of lemon juice. The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The delicious paradox of this great dry riesling is the way it is built on an imposing scale, but is very pure and super straight without any hint of heaviness, even on the very long powerful finish. You'll need to be patient for at least a couple of years if you want to experience all the subtle nuances, but the ripe mirabelle note is already delightful. At least thirty years of ageing potential.

For once orchard fruit getsthe upper hand on meadow herbs in a Christmann Grosses Gewächs, but not in a heavy-handed but rather delightfully animating way. Fine mineral and herbal notions add interest and the merest hint of residual sugar serves only to increase the Idig’s power of seduction. I liked the 2014 for its subtlety, but think the 2016 deserves an extra half point for elegance.

Noble oaky flavors intertwined with a perfume of ripe stone fruits, lemons, herbs and crushed stones open to the very deep, complex and concentrated 2015 Königsbacher Idig Riesling Trocken GG. This full-bodied, powerful, round and juicy, yet vital and finesse-full Riesling reveals a dense and silky texture. The wine is structured with fine tannins and a highly elegant, mouthwatering and mineral acidity. The oak is still detectable in the beginning, but gets very well integrated with (some hours of) aeration. The finish is pure and salty, as well as powerful, sappy and aromatic. The 2015 Idig is very fine, but also compact and powerful. This will need some years to unfold its great character.

A hint of smoke from long yeast contact, but also complex earthy notes mark this out as one of the most serious dry rieslings of the vintage in the Pfalz. In spite of the understated style, this is already a delicious wine in which the power is all hidden beneath the calm surface; it only makes itself felt directly on the impressively long and complete finish.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2020er Fahrlay Terrassen GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in a prime terraced part of the blue-slate Fahrlay sector. It proves still remarkably backward and does not offer much beyond some wet stone and smoke at first. It takes a while (think days rather than hours) for the wine to open up and reveal its stunning nose made of cassis, fine spices, herbs, flowers, and subtly creamy smoke. The wine is beautifully juicy on the dry but not bone-dry palate and leaves a superbly airy and playful feel in the long finish. Everything is there for making a stunning wine at maturity. But this beauty will test one’s patience first. Drink 2028-2040.

Tons of floral honey, ripe grapefruit and candied ginger make this concentrated and succulent riesling Spätlese really stand out of the crowd in this field. So much candied citrus on the rich yet cool and refined palate. The finish is both lush and very mineral. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 96° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to fully sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely backward and almost non-saying nose at first and the wine takes a while before revealing some faint scents of pear, melon, lemon zest, smoke, and a hint of whipped cream. However, it proves remarkably alluring on the palate where finely chiseled fruity and mineral flavors are beautifully wrapped into ripe yet zesty acidity. The finish is beautifully playful, deep, multi-layered, and refined. This modern-day equivalent of a clean Auslese GK from the 1990s is a true winner. Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Rothenpfad is deep, pure and intense on the complex and refined, peppery, crunchy slate and herbal nose that reveals ripe and finely concentrated tropical fruit with finely phenolic aromas. Full-bodied and lush on the palate, this is a rich, crystalline and savory, very elegant and refined dry Riesling with a long and complex, very well-balanced finish. Tasted in July 2022. Dramatic nose with a complex tapestry of dried-herb and wild-berry aromas that already make a very serious statement. Enormously expressive, with a stunning interplay of fruit, spice (cardamon!) and minerality, this is both deep and delightful. The balance spot-on at the very long, tannic yet silky finish. And only 12% alcohol! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Marienburg Rothenpfad GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in an iron-rich part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a great nose made of pear, vineyard peach, strawberry, laurel, cinnamon, and fine smoky elements. The wine proves impeccably balanced on the dry but not bone-dry palate. A ripe sense of zest provides the right structure for the elegant and playful flavors of fruits and spices right into the juicy finish. This is a gorgeous dry Riesling in the making, especially as it reveals all its charm with age. Drink 2026-2040.

The 2020 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is pure, bright and fresh on the nose and, like the 2021, absolutely true to its terroir with its rocky blue slate. The ripe fruit of the 2020 vintage is obvious here but far from opulence or pure richness. Terroir and vintage are beautifully united here. Rich and juicy yet refined and very delicate on the palate, this is a beautifully textured and balanced, intense and concentrated Fahrlay with fine, saline acidity, fine tannins and these crunchy structural slate elements. 12% stated alcohol. Smelling this is like looking into a deep abyss, and someone unfamiliar with intensely mineral dry riesling might feel a bit of vertigo. However, these grapefruit, white-tea and wild-herb aromas really excite us. On the sleek palate this is super-focused with a terrific tannin structure that beautifully matches the crystalline quality on the pristine finish. The 2020er Marienburg Fahrlay GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks from fruit harvested in a blue slate part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a superb nose made of lemon zest, white flowers, raspberry, fine spices, and herbs. The wine is beautifully precise and playful on the nicely dry palate and leaves a superb feel of fresh fruits and subtly tart minerals in the finish. This opens with a gorgeous sense of herbal savouriness that blends into the savoury stoniness. Crushed yarrow and potentilla not only play on the nose but also seem to give savour to the salty, concentrated palate. That saltiness is utterly mouth-watering and appetizing, flowing, smooth but oh so stony and herbal. Over the years, bio-pioneer Busch really has forged his very own style from this rhyolite site. The fact that it gets more morning than afternoon sun preserves those gorgeous aromatics in warm vintages like these. A glorious wine. Drinking Window 2025 - 2050.

Aromas of green and yellow fruit mix it with flinty minerality. The palate shows a little more fruit than the straight Marienburg, grapefruit with peel and pith, but without any tropical aspirations. Nuances of salt and quinine give an almost medicinal tang, but a generous texture makes the medicine go down without any resistance. Very cool, the essence of mineral Riesling. Drink 2021 – 2028.

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. From shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage. The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Kabinett is on volcanic soils of porphyry. This is a vineyard that used to belong to an extended family. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett beckons with a white peach hint on the nose. The palate is serene, edging its peachiness with lemon fruit and zest, tingling with stone and coating the mouth with an astringent, delicious acidity. This lovely high-wire act juxtaposes 9+ g/l of acidity with full-fruited, citric sweetness. The sinuses almost short-circuit between acidity and fruit. Helmut says, "I would never have thought in that summer that this would work. I never expected this." This is the benefit of this lateral valley and its east-exposition. To him, Kabinett is a "particular talent" of this vineyard. The 2022 is simply lovely, balanced, vivid and delicious. Drink 2023-2042.

For a bone-dry riesling this has a stunning juiciness that is hard to resist. The spot-on balance of fruit, moderate alcohol and lively acidity makes you want to dance for joy! Wide spectrum of stone and citrus fruits. Then comes the very long and elegant finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Kreuznacher Kahlenberg is further downstream and closer to the Rhine Valley, so this flowers and ripens earlier than the upper reaches of the Nahe. The bedrock is of Permian rhyolite overlaid with pebble and loam. A stony petrichor-like savoriness insinuates itself on the citrus fruit that almost has a flicker of bergamot. A creaminess appears later on. The palate is smooth, clear but rounded with fine, aromatic citrus. It's charming, with a salty, spicy zestiness. The finish is a pure, long note of lemon and ripe lemon zest with a smattering of white pepper. Drink 2023-2035.

Aged on the full lees until June this year and to be bottled the day after I tasted it, the 2021 Hermannshöhle GG offers a clear, deep, intense and complex bouquet of iodine slate aromas intertwined with lemon oil notes and those of crushed stones. Darker toned and more remote or aristocratic yet also intense and concentrated, it has a sur lie character and concentrated fruit. Full-bodied, dense, yet crystalline and saline on the palate, this is a powerful, rich and persistent Hermannshöhle with a long, complex and aromatic finish with fine tannins and stimulating lemon bitters. Still with rougher grip, this is an intense and lush, still dismissive Hermannshöhle. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2026 - 2070.

Power, complexity and brilliance make this a truly remarkable dry riesling, the touch of creaminess from long sur-lie maturation giving this exactly the soft touch it needs to balance the steely minerality that powers it at the imposing yet totally vibrant finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Cornelius Dönnhoff has no winemaking dogmas. Every year, he decides how best to bring out the wine’s origin. This time, each barrel (1200 or 2400 litres) had an analogous steel tank, with the wine from the barrel going into the steel tank after racking and the wine from the steel tank into the barrel. This enabled him to create a personality that is quite idiosyncratic, but also beautiful, with a mix of all-penetrating citrus fruit, quince, orange marmalade and ginger aromas culminating in a long finish. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Dönnhoff's 2021 Felsenberg GG is pure, bright and flinty on the deep, intense and iodine nose that also reveals phenolic complexity. Full-bodied but refined and elegant on the plate, this is a balanced and light-footed, rich and dense Felsenberg with juicy fruit and crystalline acidity, whereas the tannins step back compared to the Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg. The finish is rich yet refined and saline, with delicate lemon bitters and lush fruit. Although the 2021 is already charming, the wine needs some years on the bottle to show all its complexity and finesse without its youthful charm. This is not an austere wine that needs to soften its edges; it's already dangerously good or even too good to cause patience. But the wine will reward those who can wait. 13% stated alcohol. A rough diamond that is harder than almost anything else in the known universe! Radically stony and quite smoky, too. Ample body with ripe acidity that’s not at all pointed, yet this is a pretty austere wine with enormous drive at the bold finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. From slate and volcanic soils, the 2021 Dellchen GG opens with a radiant, bright, pure and flinty bouquet with fascinating, refined and subtle, highly elegant yet delicate mirabelle and Amalfi lemon fruit intertwined with slatey notes. The bouquet is heavenly to me (and will be, believe me, for all true Riesling lovers). Mahler's 8th symphony, Fausten's Ascension—it's all here. Subtle intensity, a sense of wonder, perfectly interwoven, natural beauty. This nose already tells everything, and I couldn't go on to the next wine for more than half an hour. On the palate, this is a subtle and delicate, highly filigreed yet also incredibly intense, lush and slatey, long, stimulatingly saline and always uplifted Riesling with perfectly ripe and lush fruit with fine tannins. It is a juicy, ripe wine with crystalline acidity and endless salinity that carries everything. This Dellchen is intense yet never gets heavy, but it becomes even more intense. This is immaculate, highly emotional Riesling. It's not just the most beautiful Dellchen I have ever tasted but certainly also the most fascinating dry Riesling I have ever had. This is pure art. An adorable wine and with so much soul. It can't be expensive enough. When Helmut Dönnhoff was speaking about the feminine, charming and tender character of the cru, it is all here. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. What a ravishing nose of yellow peaches and flowers! Breathtakingly racy and vibrant with wet-stone minerality that leaves you speechless. Dry white cannot taste more crystalline than this, the citrusy freshness at the finish almost off the scale. Still quite radical, but this is so young and has so much energy. Filigree finish. From slate and porphyry soils, the Norheim 2020 Dellchen Riesling GG is clear, pure, fresh and flinty on the nose that reveals a ripe and concentrated seed-fruit aroma. Full-bodied, intense and salty on the palate, this is a pure, rich, elegant and powerful but refined Dellchen with a long, intense and sustainable finish. Such a wide spectrum of super fine yellow-fruit aromas and a floral note that you struggle to take it in all at once. So sensual and silky that descriptors like “full” and “light” become redundant. Then the finish literally takes your breath and leaves you breathless for a long time. Cornelius Dönnhoff harnesses the potential of this beautiful site and its volcanic soil every year to produce a textbook Nahe Riesling. It boasts crystal clear, cool, fresh ripe lemon fruit, with the creaminess of lemon tart on the palate along with herbal hints of woodruff and mint, which is al brought together in a dense structure. A beautiful wine which will age gracefully. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040.

Very reserved on the nose, but there are promising signs of an exquisite composition of stone fruit, delicate spices and a fine herbal note, which on the palate is completed by a tasteful salty expression. If it did not sound condescending, I would call it the softie among Dönnhoff’s Grosse Gewächse. Drink 2023 – 2035.

The 2020 Felsenberg GG is deep, intense and complex on the pure and elegant, well-defined and slightly flinty nose. Pure, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a crystalline, refined and salty Felsenberg with great terroir expression and length, even though the wine is still puristic or even ascetic in the finish. Not as charmingly fruity as Crusius’s interpretation but with the same length and tension. 13% alcohol. If you are a terroir fundamentalist, then this enormous depth of smoky and wild-herb character will light your fire, but otherwise approach with caution. With the second and third sip you feel the attractive, grapefruity side of the wine. Then comes the paradox. There is also a touch of grapefruit-pith bitterness at the radically mineral finish, and this adds to the excitement. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

The Felsentürmchen is nowhere near ready yet. Neither will it ever be a crowd-pleaser. Grandseigneur Helmut himself called it masculine, which must not be interpreted as for men only. It’s rock hard though, encapsulating the pristine purity of minerality. It’s the end of my journey in search of the holy grail of dry Riesling. I always knew it had to be austere, craggy and rugged. The 2019er Felsenberg -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, and referred internally at the Estate as Felsentürmchen (there is a tower depicted on the label), offers a superbly delicate and complex nose with some flowery scents of anise, candied lime, lavender, Conference pear, and a hint of melon. It proves exquisitely creamy and finely juicy on the not fully dry-tasting palate and leaves a smooth and gorgeous feel of vineyard peach and almond in the long and spicy finish. This is a superbly made and hugely attractive expression of smooth yet focused dry Riesling.

The wine proves delicately zesty and light-weighted on the palate and leaves a zesty and linear feel in the long, smoky, and quite backward finish. It is still pretty much work in progress. Helmut Dönnhoff and son Cornelius are hailed for making the best Rieslings in the Nahe region and some of the finest anywhere in the world. Cornelius bears with him the promise and burden of great expectations. Dönnhoff’'s world-renowned Rieslings were first carried into the international limelight by his father, but now it is the son assuming an increasing share of the responsibility for the estate.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pronounced lime juice, red apple and light honeysuckle aromas tail off into subtle orange blossom and slatey mineral notes. Light and fresh yet possessing good textural volume across the palate, lime, juicy red apple, pear and honeysuckle flavours fill the mouth complimented by light mandarin and flinty mineral characters on the back half. Vibrant juicy like acidity with a semi off dry finish and deliciously fruity aftertaste.

Bosc pear, lime, struck flint and wet stone on the nose anticipate the brightly juicy, snappy, strongly stone-inflected impression on a polished, buoyant palate. Here is an excellent example of density allied to levity and animation such as vintage 2016 is especially capable of delivering.
