This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.

The 2022 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is very attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, blood orange, rose petals and vine smoke. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's layered and fleshy, with a deep and seamless core of fruit that conceals powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a broad, perfumed finish. If this fulfills all its promise in bottle, it may make my score look conservative.

As mentioned in the introduction, there are seven separate parcellaire cuvées of Musigny which will be blended. We tried four of them, representing different sectors. Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out. Drink from 2035-2050.

A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. Drink 2028-2080.

Bright and tensile, Bouchard's 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières offers up aromas of pear and green apple mingled with hazelnuts, white flowers and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's racy and electric, concluding with a saline finish.

The 2022 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a crisp, minerally bouquet with a clever reduction, just lending a bit of tension and bite. The well-balanced palate has good intensity, very linear and tensile, crushed stone infusing the slightly peachy fruit with a long tail on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2027-2045.

From the two remaining plots of Perrières after one has been repositioned (see under Puligny Chalumeaux). Attractive fresh fruit on the nose and then the weight of the appellation comes up. Some ripe apples, but then a broader basket of slightly more exotic fruit, that has not been allowed to ripen too far. A fine balanced whole with the power to develop. Drink from 2032-2040.

The notes of lemon zest, aromas of apricot and white flowers, and the salty mineral edge give complexity to this beautiful expression of Perrières. The wine is concentrated and substantial on the palate, but it has the acidity to ensure it never loses its balance. The grapes are from two parcels – one in Dessus, on the border with Puligny, the other in Dessous, touching the Clos des Perrières. The old Roman quarries bring the minerality that sets this wine apart. The grapes were picked on 1 September, the same day as the Montrachet. Drink 2025-2045.

Distinctly cool and restrained aromas of Granny Smith apple, spice and plenty of citrus elements are framed in just enough wood influence to mention. There is almost painful intensity to the larger-bodied flavors that display a taut muscularity and plenty of minerality on the very dry, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. This is presently an impenetrable block that needs more complexity but the Bouchard CC is a wine that ages effortlessly and thus should have no trouble developing more depth over time. Drink through 2034+.

Aromas of pear, green apple, white flowers and wet stones introduce the 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a deep, medium to full-bodied wine that's taut, chiseled and racy, with excellent depth at the core and an abundance of chalky structuring extract. As usual, it derives from the domaine's holdings on the Ladoix side.

The well-balanced palate offers mango and pineapple notes, betraying the warmth of the summer, compensated by a silver bead of acidity and a slightly peach, seductive finish. It will drink well for 15-20 years. Drink 2026-2046.

The Bouchard holding in Le Corton is made up of white marl on top of limestone slabs, and protected by the forest from the evening sun. Pale lemon and lime. The nose is slightly backward, delicate little flowers, but with the correct stony, almost gravelly aspect. Some riper fruit notes putting their heads above the parapet. A significant saline character too, behind. Drink from 2030-2038.

The Bouchard Corton Charlemagne reflects the vintage in an impressive way—it is a powerful wine, impressively substantial, long and almost fat in the mouth. Yet there is also an elegance and finesse to the wine that brings it into dynamic equilibrium, with aromas of ripe apple, apricot and hazelnuts and accents of hawthorn and hay. The grapes come from the domaine's superb four-hectare holding at the top of the slope, where recent studies with Françoise Vannier confirm 50 – 60 cm of yellow marl and limestone pebbles above the bedrock, explaining the delightful fresh acidity even in a warm year, such as 2022. Drink 2027 - 2055.

A slightly riper but brooding nose only grudgingly reveals it aromas of dark berries, earth and a whiff of leather. The noticeably denser medium-bodied flavors are at once caressing but powerful with both mouthcoating sap and tannins on the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. This excellent effort also always needs time in bottle and 2022 will again be no different. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Baby Jesus is a wine of gorgeous intensity, with alluringly ripe aromas of blackberry and plum with notes of peony and spice. The forward fruits continue on the palate as intensely sweet and silky, with a density and grip that are only apparent with time. The grapes are from nearly four hectares of vines, although only the oldest vines and most concentrated fruit are used for this bottling, with some declassified into Beaune du Château. This wine will open in five to seven years and should easily drink for 30 more after the harvest. Drink 2027-2055.

Here too there is a liqueur-like quality to the black cherry aromas that are nuanced by floral and spice hints. The caressing yet intense and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that carry over to the dusty, moderately austere and affirmatively built-to-age finish. This is one exceptionally classy wine, indeed the mouthfeel is pure silk. Buy it. Drink through 2034+.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest weight, very nicely balanced with a smooth, coca-tinged finish. It will need 4-5 years to absorb the 30% new oak. Drink 2025-2038.

The parcel of Volnay Caillerets was the first Pinot picked in 2022 due to the thin soils and superficial nature of the limestone. The wine has an alluring aroma of blackberry and mulberry fruit with hints of boxwood, bay leaf, and peonies. The texture is supple and velvety, with rewarding concentration and density. The team at Bouchard sorts rigorously for 'figuée', grapes shrivelled by sunburn; technical director Frédéric Weber says success depends on 'keeping it crunchy'. This wine should open soon after release and is suited to mid-term cellaring, although a 1962 from this vineyard tasted this year was still fresh. Drink 2025-2050.

The name Syrahmi combines "Syrah," the French word for Shiraz, and "Ami," meaning friend, symbolizing a "friendly Shiraz." Founded in 2004 by former chef Adam Foster, Syrahmi began with a small batch of fruit from Heathcote. Each year, fruit is carefully sourced from different vineyards in the Heathcote region, with the wines named uniquely to reflect each vintage.
Sourced from Carl Brown’s certified organic vineyard in Colbinabbin, this wine is made with 90% whole bunch fruit and fermented with wild yeast in a 4000L concrete vat. Gentle hand and foot plunging was followed by malolactic fermentation and 20 months of maturation in a 2800L used French oak foudre. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it spent two years in bottle before release.

Certified organic, 90% whole bunch, aged in 2800L foudres. The whole-bunch percentage is obviously high, but the fruit has taken it up beautifully; there's nothing hard, green or jangly here. This is awash with sweet, juicy, red-berried fruit, the complements coming in the form of roasted nut, smoked wood and game characters. In short, it puts on quite a show. Drink 2024 - 2032.

KWV is the second largest brandy producer in South Africa, sourcing chenin blanc and colombard grapes from over fifty different cooperatives and vineyards. Their distillate is casked at around 70% ABV, typically in either fine-grained Limousin or coarser-grained Tronçais oak casks. After three years, anything intended for additional aging is transferred into older barrels. A combination of new and older oak casks are used, as well as some that formerly held wine. The entry-level three-year-old is double pot distilled for a full, fruity taste including flavours of apple and pear. It's solid as a mixer or everyday drinker, but if you're looking for a brandy with more finesse, check out the superior age statements in the award-winning KWV range. 43% Alc./Vol.

This 99% unpeated, NAS Amrut represents a new value in Indian single malt. At first taste, you could mistake it for Speyside Scotch. Light sherry features on the cocoa-dusted nose, followed by well-composed, medium-bodied flavours conjuring cinnamon and budding fruitiness (apricots and peaches); The finish dwindles, winding up leathery, delicate and slightly short. 'Bagheera' is Indian for black panther, and the animal is featured gliding across the label. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... With the magnificent Mysore Palace on its label, and a nose of garam masala, overripe banana, coffee bean, hazelnut, and prune juice, this is definitely an Amrut to experience. Flavors ebb and flow through cereal notes, Agen prunes, raisins, vanilla essence, dried fruits, stewed apple, and dark autumnal fruits, all underpinned by glittering spicy base notes. ...I find it funny that they would have felt the need to tell you that this was made out of 99% unpeated and 1% peated malted barley. We do know that peat tends to dominate, even when in small proportions, but 1%? Or is this an homeopathic peater? Ha-ha, yet a new concept! Colour: gold. Nose: a few sulphury touches at first (from some sherry wood, not form those 1% I'm sure… or wait, am I wrong, Amrut?) then some mentholated raisins and salted fudge, bicycle inner tube, the old unused coal pit in the basement, ye auld fireplace... Mouth: I like it ten times better on the palate. And guess what, the peat does feel. Truffle and smoke, salted lemon marmalade, sweet Thai soup (coconut, coriander, pepper, bouillons…) Finish: long, still a little 'unusual', I would suppose we'll need a little time to get accustomed to this new homeopathic style, but there sure is a thing here. Bottom line, 1% feels a lot! Comments: I'm glad I tried this one. It reminds of Miles, remember, if you do a wee mistake, repeat it many times and everybody will applaud and believe you did it on purpose (loosely reported, of course he said it better). 84 points - whiskyfun.com

The slightly cliched packaging anticipates an entry-level rum, but it's a high-quality blend with the elegance of Nicaraguan benchmarks (think Flor de Cana). Ripe fruit cake and caney notes check the creeping sugars, making the finish almost refreshing. Impressive weight and flavour at just 40% results in a classy standalone sipper that retains much of its character when mixed.

An absinthe liqueur infused with wormwood, green anise, mugwort, lemon balm and peppermint (amongst other botanicals). It packs in some of the flavours traditionally associated with Absinthe, like liquorice, spearmint and subtle woody-herbaceous notes, but it's sweet and lacking the intensity of Absinthe proper which can land anywhere between 50% to 70% ABV. The twist is that this is reported to glow in the dark under certain lighting conditions due to the presence of a natural colouring agent called riboflavin. They quickly set about re-establishing the vineyard and the first commercial release was in 2004. Today the property has over 80 acres under vine. Sourced from selected rows in Eden Hall’s Block 4 vineyard, the wine was matured for 22 months in French oak and spent more than a year in bottle prior to release. The talented Phil Lehmann was the winemaker of this large scaled 2021 Shiraz.

Made with the three traditional grape varieties of Champagne but with some added Pinot Blanc, 60% of the base wine coming from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages. Lemon curd, green apple, white flowers, sea spray, pastry and cream. Yummo. The bubbles are fine and silky, and the mouthfeel and fruit are resonant. I enjoyed it immensely by itself but also drank it with a very large amount of cheese. For only $28 you’re getting some very tasty sparkling wine here.

Noix de la Saint-Jean is well balanced between acidity and sugars with a good volume on the palate. The astringency of this nut gives this aperitif a good lingering flavour. A very pale orange pink with notes of florals, redcurrants and spices, with hints of cherries and strawberries. This is a gentle and delightfully elegant style of fizz, with a creamy texture that is finely balanced with a crisp finish. There is a chalky, minerally backing here with a lingering finish. President Nixon famously enjoyed Moutai during his visit to China where it's considered the 'national liquor’. Made from red sorghum grain grown in Guizhou (Kweichou) Province, the fermented mash is distilled seven times. Batches are kept separate then matured for years in earthenware jars which allow the alcohol to ‘breathe’. Finally, the distillates are subject to an elaborate vatting process, supervised by a Master Blender to achieve the spirit's unique aroma and flavour.
Often served at state banquets and presented as a diplomatic gift, Moutai's floral / yeasty / grainy flavour has also been compared to soy sauce, while its popularity is such that limited editions have become highly collectable. According to a report by Fortune Magazine, the spirit's "fiery flavour and potential to appreciate in price is driving blistering demand. That in turn has pushed its market value to more than $145 billion, well past British whisky giant Diageo."

The Original naming refers to the 1995 plantings that first went in the ground at Cobaw Ridge but also aptly describes the Cooper family behind the vines.
As with many great wines, the more time spent with it, the more the journey is cinematic, which is particularly apt here. On opening, a seamless, svelte and lighter weight red with dark cherry, caraway seed, Aussie bush elements and white pepper dusted in. The more time open, the more big swirls, the build of savoury elements in hazelnut, garam masala spice, spearmint and amaro-like qualities. The texture opened up somewhat too, more expansive, a spread in the palate on guiding trails of gossamer. There are wines that deliver strict bounds of Olympic performance, precise and at the apex, and then those that build as an expressive performance. The latter here, and we’re better for it. This is the first standalone release from a vineyard planted in 2011, with a density of just under 7000 vines per hectare. It offers a richer expression compared to the 'Original Black,' emphasizing dark fruits like cherry and plum. The wine has a remarkable density complemented by a touch of spice and savory details. It’s a wine on the edge, and for personal preferences, that’s mostly where I want my wine to be. It keeps you alert, it keeps you seeking out more information. This wine is imbued with fine, elegant pinosity and shows off refined tannin profile and a sense of complexing minerality. The rub is that its a marginal site, a cool place that delivers a nervous freshness at times, and with that mint, Aussie bush/alpine elements that could irk some who approach this wine. I bet most who do know what they’re in for, know the quality potential inherent, and look for the distinct personality even in the more edgier years. Amongst all this, dark cherry, pitch perfect in freshness and bite, some sweet spice too. Just shy of medium weight. Very compelling. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The juniper-infused spirit known as gin has the Netherlands as its spiritual home. Later, England went on to popularise its own 'London Dry', traditionally based on less than a handful of botanicals (juniper, cardamom and coriander). However, the influence of Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other spice islands isn't commonly found, even in contemporary styles. Enter Dutch Gin, founded in 2022 in the Melbourne suburb of Mitcham. Here, botanicals like lemongrass, makrut leaves, chilli, thai basil and ginger are broadening the scope of what gins can taste like. Proprietor, Danny Perera employs a wheat-based spirit which brings a nice smooth mouthfeel to each expression. Step one is to load the still with distillate, then add juniper and dried botanicals to the pot. Once out of the still, the spirits are rested for a couple of weeks to maximise the flavour before diluting to a lower ABV followed by bottling and labelling. With an abundance of stock to draw from, Bushmill’s claims the distinction of being the only producer in Ireland capable of annually releasing ultra-rare, high-age statement expressions like this. Originally distilled in the early 1990s, the company began experimenting in the 2000s with re-casking its single malts to enhance the distillery character, although they didn’t have a specific series in mind for these experiments, until now. The venerable 30 year old was aged for 14 years in bourbon barrels and sherry butts before finishing in first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for another 16 years. Pedro Ximénez (aka PX) is a dark sweet Sherry style that typically contributes rich dried fruit characteristics. What’s great about the Canvas wines is that they're well made with an emphasis on drinkability. This joven style is jam-packed with exuberant red fruits, cherry-berry cola, sarsaparilla and those distinct woodsy spices, not from oak – just part of the variety’s DNA. This old vine Grenache was crafted from two blocks on Yalumba’s Tri-Centenary Vineyard, planted in 1949 and 1929 located in the tiny Barossa Valley sub region of Vine Vale. The two blocks were wild fermented separately - the first 40% whole bunch, the second 33% whole bunch fruit. Maturation took place in older French oak puncheons for a period of 6 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Alluring red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice aromas infused with hints of dried clove and graphite sail through the nostrils followed by some peppered earth end notes. Juicy red to dark raspberry, cherry and liquorice fruits overlay a dried herb and peppered earth back drop. Polished tannins finishing long, fresh and succulent.

Of all the wines in the Yalumba Grenache collection, for me, this is the value pick. A cracking wine which is seriously good buying. The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale. The two blocks were harvested for the wine, with the first seeing 40% whole bunch fermentation and the second 33%. A garnet/crimson colour, the nose is utterly gorgeous. This is Grenache on steroids. Strawberries and cream, florals, bergamot, spices and cherries. Take everything that is good about Grenache and it is jam-packed into this wine. It also offers that typical Grenache tannin mix of silky and sandy. Showing good balance and length, this is a superb example of a top-notch Barossa Grenache. Drink now and for the next eight years.
