The fruit is pure, the perfumes clear, the mouthfeel soft. There’s an integrity to this wine but, at heart, it’s a crowd-pleaser. It tastes of boysenberry and earth, sweet jubey berries in general and something woody, like sandalwood. It’s a wine of grain and groove and silk. It’s most enjoyable. Drink 2024-2031.

2024 Chateau Pontet Canet Pre-Arrival OfferPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenClosure: CorkToday Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most popular and collectable wines in all of Bordeaux, and much of this success has come from the extraordinary quality of wines made in the last two decades. While ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, today the property would easily be regarded as a Second Growth as the wines often rival the best in the region. Much of the emphasis at Pontet Canet is in the vineyard, and the property has converted to 100% biodynamics as of 2005. The vineyard is next to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

The 2024 Pontet-Canet underlines the fact that daring to harvest late paid dividends in this challenging vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black raspberries and plums mingled with accents of rose petals, licorice and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and integrated, with mid-palate density that's all too rare this year, it's layered, suave and seamless, concluding with a long, sapid finish. Picking began on September 26 and concluded on October 11, with the heart of the estate's old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon coming in between the seventh and the ninth, well after many châteaux had finished their harvest. Greater reactivity during the season means that Pontet-Canet's vineyards are gaining in vigor, while in the winery, a lighter touch with extraction, systematic climate control and a wholesale refinement of the estate's cooperage choices have brought new harmony and sensuality to this estate's wines. That has combined with a willingness to take risks with harvest dates to deliver what is clearly one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Brisk acids and beams of tannin shape a mid-weight, classically built Pontet-Canet unlike any I have tasted. The 2024 is not an obvious wine, it does not have the opulence of most recent years, rather it is a wine that impresses with its energy, tension and class. Floral, spice and mineral notes stain the palate in this vibrant, beautifully sculpted Pontet-Canet. The 2024 is seriously impressive, but it is also less immediate than what was once the norm because of a shift towards a style that favors greater energy and vibrancy than in the recent past. The evolution here is going to be fascinating to follow in the coming years. Tasted three times. Drink 2032-2044.

Antonio Galloni - VinousVibrant ruby in colour with violet edging, this is beautifully measured, with a careful release of black fruits. Puts the focus on the floral side of Cabernet Sauvignon, with rose petals, chamomile, fragrant tomato leaf and lilac. There is austerity on the opening, with tight architecture but as it opens juice begins to flow through the pumice and slate-textured tannins, and this delivers a finessed, slim-style of Pauillac, with plenty of ageing potential and quiet confidence. One of the successes of the vintage. Harvest September 26 through to October 11. 3.8ph, 50% new oak, 35% concrete amphoras. Tasted twice. Drink 2032-2046.

A 50/50% mix of upper and lower Yarra estate and grower fruit. 30% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. Pretty and complex with aromas of red cherry skins and rhubarb together with some pink peppercorn spice and a light savoury edge. More approachable than the '23. As a young wine, the medium-bodied palate is spicy, silky and long. It'll probably age well but it's so good to drink now that there's no need to bother! Drink by 2030.

The 2024 release of the Sauvignon Blanc that put New Zealand wine on the map marks it’s 40th vintage. Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Soaring out of the glass are intense passionfruit, guava and ripe gooseberry aromas followed by hints of capsicum and grassy asparagus like notes. Mouth watering passionfruit, guava and lime fruits are delivered with excellent concentration. Herbaceous gooseberry, grassy asparagus and subtle capsicum accents lie underneath. Crisp acidity finishing long and scrumptious.

A departure from Delord's vintage-dated bottlings is this quarter-century old brandy with an age statement prominent on the label. The pricing is consistent with the rest of Delord's range, i.e. - surprisingly cheap. Apparently there is more colombard in the blend which fills out the fruitiness of the mid palate. Expect notes of cocoa, roasted nuts, baking spices, dried fruits and cinnamon.
Founded by one of the mobile distillers of the region in 1893, Delord became a permanent operation in 1932 with an estate in the Bas Armagnac region. They distill from a mixture of ugni blanc, colombard, baco and folle-blanche, each vinified separately and then distilled using both continuous and batch stills. The former distillate is primarily used for spirits destined to age for a significant amount of time while the double distilled spirit is primarily used for younger expressions. 40% Alc./Vol.

2012 A.D. Rattray Cask Collection Craigellachie 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 65%Craigellachie is notable as a full bodied and slightly sulphurous malt (in a good way) used primarily to add punch to blends. Part of it's charm is that the distillery still uses old-fashioned worm tubs with low copper content, said to add weight and a beef-stock kind of flavour while also resulting in whiskies that “taste older than they are”. This may well be one of the boldest drams for the year. Starting with an already heavyweight make, it then gets finished for around 30 months in one of Rattray's exceptional Glenallachie x-Sherry butts. These casks lend notes of red berry and baking spice to the classic Craigellachie toasted oat, cereal base. A selection to suit the adventurous before beginners, it's another bomb of a malt capped off by a whopping 65% Alc./Vol. The yield was 552 bottles. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Autumn leaf. Nose: Seville orange, roast plum and crystallized ginger. Palate: Raspberry jam, juicy nectarine and lemon zest. Finish: Sweet, sticky marmalade with hints of walnut and clove.

Moss Wood’s entry level Cabernets, Amy’s, is a Bordeaux-styled blend that’s produced in an earlier drinking style loaded with generous fruit that shows plenty of flesh. Sourced from the Glenmore vineyard just north of Yallingup. It’s a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec and 5% Merlot. Maturation takes place in 228 litre older French oak barrels for a period of 18 months.
Midnight black heart with a vibrant dark red hue. Delightful red to black currant and violet scents mix with some mulberry, red liquorice, lightly dusted vanillin cedar, tobacco and bay leaf notes. Mid weighted, the palate is layered with rich juicy red to black currant, red liquorice and blueberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, delicate earth and infusions of bay leaf form the back drop. Excellent concentration with seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins. The long, fresh finish bristling with a mix of succulent red and blue fruit.

This is a blend if cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, malbec and merlot. In a good year like this one, it offers some of the best value classy red wine going around. This is as good as any in this line. Plush red fruit of tremendous intensity. A firm core of tannin and oak holds it firm as the succulent fruit washes through. Such energy and vibrancy.

RayJordanWine.com.auVery much Cabernet Sauvignon dominant (83%), the wine also enjoys contributions from Merlot (5%), Malbec (6%) and Petit Verdot (6%). After fermentation and blending, the wine was returned to the 228-litre French oak barrels, none of them new, for maturation for a year and a half. A purple/maroon colour here, we have a nose exhibiting some of those classic Cab notes with black fruits, truffles, black cherries, cedar, cigar boxes and tobacco leaves, beef stock and graphite. There is deftly handled oak, silky tannins, excellent balance and length. This is a superb Cabernet blend and should drink beautifully for at least the next ten to twelve years. The team talk about it being approachable young and it certainly is, but I also think it has a long future – it simply has such fine balance and so much going on that it can’t miss. This is a stellar Amy’s. Drink 2024-2036.

Smoking Furnace is the new blend created at Claxton's Dalswinton Bond using a high-peated malt spec. Twelve months finishing in toasted and heavily re-charred oak casks account for some of its richness. Also noteworthy is a high ABV and the fact that it's bottled without chill filtration - uncommon in the blended market. From a 25ml sample, Smoking Furnace is a charming and laid back blend, sweet on the nose with suggestions of toffee apples and discreet peat before a cured meat / smokey bbq character develops; On the palate, malt outweighs the grains. The peat leans towards chimney soot. Brisk and sleek with light tongue-coating oils, becoming sooty and fruity-sweet, balanced by more bbq char notes, lively spices and spirit heat. Superb easy-drinking in the peated category, it should give Johnnie Walker Black a run for its money. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This one glides over the palate and I’m immediately struck by how little the grain is dominant in this blend. The smokiness is not an Islay one, much too luxurious and crammed full of sweet bonfire notes... The Smoking Furnace is a magnificent first foray into the blending world from a company that had never used the term before. It is quite clear that the malt content is considerably higher than that of the other two blended whiskies tasted (the Hogshead being a blended malt wins this competition). Being bottled at 46% and without colouring (something JW Black cannot claim) gives the Smoking Furnace a greater body and depth of flavour. Claxton’s - a company obsessed with single malts delving into the world of blends – are, therefore, the opposite of Diageo. They haven’t just nailed it with this release, they have smashed it out of the park. It is a release that suggests blending doesn’t need decades of apprenticeship, a degree from Heriot-Watt, reverie or the term ‘Master’ before whatever you wish to add after it. Smoking Furnace is a release reinforcing that great whisky doesn’t require great status, pomposity or deference. I’m getting carried away again. - dramface.com

Established in 1860 and purchased by the Purbrick family in 1925, Tahbilk has the world’s largest single holding of Marsanne, a grape that plays a major role in some of the worlds most famed white wines, those of Hermitage in Northern Rhone.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Fresh peach and lime aromas jump out of the glass complimented by some floral honeysuckle, apple skin and subtle spicy bees wax notes. On the palate delicious peach and red apple skin flavours meld into a back drop of lime, delicate honeysuckle and stony mineral elements. Supple in its feel it possesses solid concentration and vibrant underlying acidity. Dry, refreshing finish.

Claxton's GlenCarrick 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46%Once operating just north of Claxton's Dalswinton Estate, the earliest record of Glencarrick Distillery dates back to 1831, though it may well have been working prior to that. Exactly when it closed remains uncertain. Glencarrick's forgotten ruins inspired this 're-production', based on the flavour of the historic Lowlander, which includes maturation in sherry and ex-Islay whisky casks. Soft, enticing opening notes of milk chocolate, barley and background poached pear are echoed in the mouth. Trace peat of the sweet kind lends multiple chocolate accents, from dark fruit’n nut chocolate to more bitter cocoas, the malt picking up as soft orchard fruits slide back in with a merest puff of sweet wood smoke. The lengthy finish feels premium. In a word: "rounded", boasting the structure of a luxury, malt-forward blend. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 25ml sample.

An almond nuttiness, milk chocolate and dried orange peel suggest Christmas. Palate: lovely sweet arrival: honey drizzled on dried fruit stuffed baked apples. There's some blueberry jam, toffee chewing nuts and some Christmas spices: cinnamon and nutmeg, A little ginger snap hint, freshly dunked in a cup of hot tea. A little orange zest and a a lovely blanket of smoke covering everything. Finish: Lingering orange marmalade, dried fruit, cinnamon spice and smoke. Cape Byron Stone Beer Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%Cape Byron continues as it began in 2016 - as a family owned and run operation situated on a Macadamia farm. Scotch Whisky Master, Jim McEwan is significant for his early involvement, alongside current distiller and owner, Eddie Brooks. Cape Byron's house style has been compared to Bruichladdich's "Classic Laddie" - not unwarranted, nor surprising. Full-size, 200 litre American oak ex-bourbon barrels are the mainstay, with multiple casks vatted for each release. The whiskies mature in a cool, damp environment and are bottled non-chill filtered. Here's another in a series of 'experiments', this time following a tradition more aligned with Northern European distilleries - maturation in x-beer casks. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels previously filled with Stone & Wood's rich and distinctive 'Stone Beer', a dark porter brewed with wood-fired stones, the resulting whisky shows some nice tropical fruit character, dustings of cocoa and stout, rounded off with a subtle herbaceous tang and lingering pepper heat at the finish. As far as this sub-category goes, it's a success, even if the beer influence seems slight. 46% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... crème brûlée and indulgent vanilla custard, followed by a burst of fresh orange zest evolving into mocha and tiramisu. It concludes with a lingering honey note, leaving a sweet and satisfying finish.

More than eighty different vintages are currently being matured in Laubade’s cellars. The oldest vintage is from 1888. Each year tells a story dealing with the ongoing climate changes, cask quality and the cellar's temperature - all of which define the vintage identity. A culmination of rich know-how and dedication to quality from three generations, the Lesgourgues family continue to run their own 260 acre property. Planted to Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche & Baco, each variety is distilled seperately. Notably, Laubade remains alone in coopering their own Gascon oak casks. The wine is gently floral without being overt, and it has a mineral seam of crushed quartz and sand. Pretty. Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart and an equally deep dark red black hue. Intense dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas soar out of the glass with some smoked meat, vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes also evident. Rich, super dense and exceptionally concentrated, the palate is a skyscraper of flavour, packed end to end with lavish dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and dark chocolate fruits. Boasting enormous power and torque notions of vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and delicate spicy fennel are detailed across the back half. Opulently textured with a velvet smooth yet underlying firm tannin structure it has an explosive finish that’s laden with decadent plush fruit.

Leo Buring Leonay. The mention of that name is enough to get any riesling lover standing to attention. Named after winemaker and the rather awesomely monikered Leo Buring Hermann Paul Leopold Buring. Anyone that has said "Winemaking isn't a matter of life or death – it's much more important than that!" is OK by me. The wine is a singularity of limey goodness. Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime juice and green apple sorbet with hints of Christmas lily, clover blossom, crushed quartz and lemongrass. Precise and focused with a tubular core pushed across the palate by fine, vivid acidity with an umami blush on the exit. If there was a Mount Rushmore for Aussie riesling, old Leo's smiling face would be the first to be chiseled into the granite. Drink by 2040.

Reportedly the barley is smoked in multiple ways – first wood-smoked in beech and oak woods, then re-smoked with local peat from the Appenzell Highmoor. It's said to be a polarising experience, even for peat freaks. An earlier edition was awarded Jim Murray's “European Whisky of the Year” for 2010. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... The kind of smokey infusion which just makes you purr with happiness. One of my favourite peat styles: a kind of mix between cattle sheds and bacon frying in the pan... Peat cut from the moors in Appenzell is used to make peated malt that is then matured in beer casks. The nose has rich woodsmoke, leather, charred oak, bruised orchard fruit, and a mild pepperiness. Unsweetened chocolate, dark fruit, clove, and ginger lead to an intense spicy peak, diluting to leave hazelnut ganache, chocolate brownie, and a gentle smoky character. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
[circa 2021 bottling] We're in Appenzell and unless you're a native German speaker, please try to say 'Dreifaltigkeit'. Bravo! Indeed that means 'trinity' in German. This was matured in old beer casks, a typical set-up at Säntis. Colour: deep gold/amber. Nose: with bags of pencil shavings and tons of pinewood chips, this should work well as a spread over your barbecued ribs. Seriously, I think this is awesome, totally deviant in a great way, and more and more on smoked and grilled bacon. Spectacular, I can't wait to check what will happen once water's been added. With water: same but with even more pinewood. A little aquavit, perhaps, Schinken häger… ever heard of Schinken häger? Mouth (neat): total extreme fun. Tons of smoked bacon, litres of Jägermeister and Fernet Branca, and this feeling of drinking sauna oil. With water: more tar, myrtle liqueur (first time I'm finding this much myrtle), salty bacon… Finish: very long. Perhaps a tad too long in fact, you'll need a break before you pour another whisky. Appenzeller brewery makes this malt using old beer casks, and they have softened the edges of the malt and given it a liquid honey frame around which woody-earthy notes and unripe dates create an intriguing mix. Needs a bit of time to come around. It’s maybe a little more robust and fruity than is usual for this wine, though it’s still good. Drink 2026-2034.

On the sample labels attached to the bottles of Pinot and Chardonnay, Franco talks about the ‘envelope’ of the wine. I’m not really sure what that means. Maybe he’s getting a lot of fan mail? Franco thinks this is the best Chardonnay since the 2021.
Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s packed with flavour, white nectarine and nutty spicy characters, a flinty grip to texture, quite some intensity and power here, and in some respects it seems more Beechworth than Yarra, or so I think. Pear and citrus, lime rind, with excellent length of flavour. It’s elemental as at now, and a little raw, though I reckon it will deliver with a couple of years in bottle. It’s a cracking release. Other reviews... Fabulous sherry trifle on the nose and a marvelously confident delivery makes for a storming start to this flavoursome malt. Indeed, despite the healthy sherry influence on the delivery, the malt makes its presence felt in both the flavour and texture. [IV Edition tasted 2013] Whisky Advocate is moving out into the unknown, turning over the rocks and discovering beautiful and unfamiliar creatures like this one. This has spent four years in a beer barrel and then a year in a port cask, and it's fabulous. Think licorice, aniseed, and cherry-flavored soda. Interesting background. The vines date back to the late 1800s but were replanted on this Paracombe vineyard in 1990. This is a limited release wine from the best barrels. The fruit is both intense and refined. After vinification it goes into new French oak for 36 months. So, it gets a decent hit, but this is where those century old vines do their thing, ensuring the balance and restraint to avoid a heavy hand of oak. It’s seamlessly and beautifully integrated with a light cedary impact that works well with the intense plummy fruit. Will handle extended cellaring. Drink 2024-2042.

This addition to Darroze's ongoing 'Unique Collection' of single vineyard, cask strength brandies is one of the oldest releases to date: distilled in 1975 and bottled in October 2024, look for keynotes of fig jam and brioche apple pie in a long and complex delivery. 45.5% Alc./Vol.
Francis and Marc Darroze roam the best estates and terroirs of Bas Armagnac in search of the most beautiful and distinctive brandies. Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars.These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

First produced in 1862, re-launched around 2015 and named after the Spanish word for Gold, Bacardi Oro is the premium blend from the Bacardi stable based in Peurto Rico. Fourteen young rums make up the mix which is aged for just one to two years adding subtle notes of toffee and muscovado sugar. Filtered once through charcoal for smoothness, expect a lighter, drier style made for mixing.
Other reviews... The Carta Oro despite all of Bacardi’s marketing gimmicks is not a very sophisticated or complex spirit. If you want a strong hit of alcohol in a glass then reach for the Carta Oro. From the intense alcohol fumes on the nose to the strong ethanol notes when sipped and the strong boozy flavours when mixed this isn’t anywhere near as sophisticated as it wants to be. Drouin's Experimental Pays d'Auge Calvados is described by its creator as "one of the most intense and rich expressions we've produced in this range." After exploring the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique, Guillaume Drouin was inspired to age a seventeen year old brandy in French oak rum barrels from the famous Foursquare Distillery in Barbados. A seventeen month spell was followed by three months in freshly toasted barrels. The rum imparts brown sugar and vanilla notes, while the toasted barrels enhance roundness and structure. The resulting calvados has aromas of ripe apples, vanilla, caramel and brown sugar, with flavours of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and spice - an exotic marriage and a perfect balance between two worlds. 2396 bottles produced. 46.8% Alc./Vol.

It feels cool and relaxed with an abundance of varietal/Margaret River flavours: cassis, mulberries, a dusting of cocoa powder, nori and lots of fresh herbs plus eucalyptus with cedary, sweet oak. Medium bodied and supple with fleshy fruit across the palate and textural, refined tannins. It’s a lovely drink now but will last some distance. Drink by 2034.

This is from the Smart vineyard in Clarendon. I just had Giles Cooke MW over for a tasting, and he’s a very nice man, I must say. This was the standout wine of the tasting, and the best since 2021, so starting at the top… Fermented in a concrete pyramid with 20% whole bunch in the mix.
Souk spices, red cherry, fresh raspberry, a bit stony and ferrous, Japanese ginger, rosehip, and gee, the aromatics here are quite something. Medium-bodied, a lovely tannin profile, mildly assertive but fine, with a pumice stone texture, acidity is pure with a cranberry crunch to it, and the finish is long and perfumed, with stony grip to close. This is a showstopper. Superb. Beautifully made and a bell-clear expression of Grenache. Drink 2025-2036+

The fruit for the 2023 Farmer’s Heart Grenache was selected from a range of diverse sub-regions within McLaren Vale. These vineyards boast an age range spanning from 26 to 130 years old. Notably, 48% of the blend originates from vines over a century old, while 74% is derived from those over 95 years in age.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a purple red tinged hue. Aromas of raspberry and red liquorice infused with white pepper sail through the nostrils with some fresh herb, earthy graphite and spice notes also evident. Juicy red cherry, red raspberry and red liquorice fruits decorate the mid weighted palate that has a fresh, lively feel. Extending across the back half are notions of vanillin spice, earthy graphite and pepper. Understated in its power it has good tension and a sturdy yet polished tannin framework. The long finish vibrant, succulent and peppery.

This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There’s a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. It’s delightful, but no pushover. Drink by 2030.
