2023 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Les Longeroies
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Founded in 1972 by Charles and Marie-Francoise Audoin, Domaine Charles Audoin has been central to Marsannay's evolution into one of the Cote de Nuits' most engaging appellations. From an initial three hectares, it has grown to fourteen across many of the village's key sites. Since taking over in 2000, Cyril Audoin has brought a quiet precision to both vineyard and cellar, guiding the estate to organic certification and overseeing the construction of a purpose-built winery. The result is a style that feels unmistakably of Marsannay: pure, composed, and full of energy.

Les Longeroies is one of Marsannay's largest and most important vineyards, spanning the border with Chenove. The upper section has limestone close to the surface, giving lift and precision, while the lower section contains more red marl for depth and structure. Long recognised as a prime candidate for premier cru status, it produces wines that are refined yet firmly built.

Charming, fleshy and round, with a terra-cotta character behind the wealth of sour-cherry and red-berry aromas. Medium-bodied with elegant, silky tannins. Long, very elegant finish that's deftly underlined by the fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink or hold.

Once again very ripe yet agreeably fresh aromas display notes of poached plum, earth and spice along with a kirsch top note. The seductive, sappy and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as mineral-driven as those of the Clos du Roy but offer slightly better depth on the impressively long and youthfully austere finale. Drink through 2030+.

Situated in the centre of the Marsannay sector, La Charme aux Pretres has reddish-brown gravel over limestone bedrock. The high limestone content lends the wines tension and structure, with impressive capacity to age.

Light reduction blurs the nuances of what appears to be mostly ripe dark berry fruit aromas. More interesting are the generously proportioned and rich medium weight flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while exhibiting solid power on the saline, youthfully austere and firm finale. This is a seductive wine that should have no trouble repaying up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2031+.

So creamy and succulent, but also with terrific mineral energy, this leaps and bounds across the medium-bodied palate. Very precise and complex, all the fascinating details pulling you down into its deep well of blue-fruit beauty. Then the racy finish electrifies you. From organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink or hold.

A perfumed and exceptionally pretty nose features ripe aromas that include those of plum, black cherry and background spice hints. The medium dense middle weight flavors exude a discreet minerality on the firm, serious and built-to-age finale. This is lovely and very much built-to-age so at least some patience is necessary. Incredibly concentrated and refined, this has a mind-blowing aroma of sour cherries, but on the palate it is still slowly opening up, with great chalky minerality that builds and builds to an extraordinary climax at the almost endless finish. An exuberantly fresh nose freely offers up its array of elegant essence of red cherry, soft earth and plenty of floral elements. There is impressive density, and particularly so for the vintage, to the vibrant and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that display the hallmark power and minerality of a fine Favières. Excellent. As graceful as it is rich, this extraordinary pinot noir is a giant of subtlety. Incredible concentration and underplayed power on the super-silky, medium-bodied palate. Like the Favières, this possesses a super-fresh nose of high-toned red berries, rose petal and a subtle earth nuance. There is outstanding volume and punch to the powerful and focused larger-bodied flavors that deliver first-rate persistence on the balanced, firm and serious finish. This too is excellent. A slightly riper nose is comprised by notes of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and newly turned earth. The middle weight flavors are not as dense though they are slightly finer with more evident minerality as well that adds a sense of lift to the long and youthfully austere finale where an interesting hint of bitter orange peel slowly emerges. Wild Turkey Jimmy Russell's 70th Anniversary 101 Proof 8 Year Old Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

"Outstanding... Perfection at 8 years... If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle." - rarebird101.com

Wild Turkey's latest collector-worthy bourbon celebrates Master Distiller, Jimmy Russell's 70th anniversary at the distillery. The whiskey is an 8 year old with an additional blend of 8 to 9 year old bourbons, hand-selected from a few of Jimmy’s favourite Rickhouses. The bolder, higher-proof expression is one he's always preferred. When many began favouring lighter spirits, Jimmy refused to dilute his bourbon or change the distilling process, embracing a style that he learned from his predecessor, Bill Hughes. That staunch approach helped propel the popularity of many of the distillery’s classics, including Jimmy’s favourite, Wild Turkey 101, proving that a bold Kentucky bourbon would always have a place behind the bar.

Wild Turkey was known as Anderson County Distilling Co. when Jimmy started work. It would soon change its name to J.T.S. Brown & Sons. From his earliest days spent sweeping the floors as an 18 year old rookie, Jimmy moved from job to job as seen fit by his mentor, the pre-prohibition distiller Bill Hughes. Through changes in ownership and shifts in the market, Jimmy rose through the ranks to finally become Master Distiller in 1967. Four years later a company from New York named Austin, Nichols & Co. (a subsidiary of Liggett Myers Tobacco. Co.) purchased the J.T.S. Brown & Sons Distillery to produce their flagship Wild Turkey Bourbon exclusively. The new management kept Jimmy in charge and the rest, as they say, is history. Seventy years working at the same business is an extraordinary accomplishment in anyone's book. It would take a dedicated biography to cover it. "In my eyes, I've never worked a day in my life. The day I do, I'll retire," jokes Jimmy. "Until then, I'm going to continue making the bourbon I love."

Other reviews... This year, master distiller Jimmy Russell celebrated his 70th year at Wild Turkey, a remarkable milestone by any stretch of the imagination (and even more so considering that he still shows up to work most days of the week). In honor of this watershed year, Jimmy’s son Eddie and grandson Bruce created a celebratory bourbon. The nose is chock-full of fresh cherries, cappuccino, vanilla cream, butterscotch, and leather. Baking spice bubbles over on the palate, backed up by toasted coconut and salted caramel, and a lick of bright citrus. Vanilla buttercream, Mounds bar, and black currant end this celebration on a high note. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Outstanding. Jimmy Russell’s 70th Anniversary Release is perfection at eight years. It’s everything it should be and nothing it shouldn’t. If there were a single bourbon to best represent Wild Turkey’s signature flavor it would be this bottle.  - rarebird101.com

Notes from the producers... Best served neat or over ice, the bourbon offers rich aromas of oak, honey, cinnamon, and tobacco and a palate marked by sweet cream, butterscotch and black tea notes that transition to bitter chocolate, dark cherry and burnt sugar.

    2022 Chateau d'Yquem Magnum (1500ml)
    Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $1999. 00
    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

As the only Sauternes property classified as Premier Cru Superieur, drinking a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem is an experience unlike any other. Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

The 2022 Chateau d’Yquem is a vintage shaped by extremes—the driest and hottest year on record at the estate, with an exceptionally early start to the season. Noble rot developed late, and a dramatic shift in mid-October led to rapid concentration, resulting in Yquem’s most opulent wine since 1945, with 160 g/L residual sugar. Despite the richness, meticulous blending and shorter elevage ensure remarkable freshness and balance in this extraordinary Sauternes.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 d'Yquem is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Exhibiting a remarkably delicate, complex and energetic bouquet of rose, confit citrus, exotic fruits and orange marmalade, it's full-bodied, dense and deep with a pristine balance enhanced by a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and beautiful, gastronomic bitterness and dry extracts that segue to a long, ethereal, delicately perfumed and refined finish. Lorenzo Pasquini and his team have perfectly understood the vintage by privileging the third tries, fully exposed to Botrytis cinerea, in the blend, bringing density and precision along with an energetic and splendidly balanced interplay of bitterness and sweetness. Residual sugar levels reach 160 grams per liter, marking it as the second-highest since the iconic 1945 vintage. Drink 2034-2074.
    98 points
Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Jan 17, 2025)

The 2022 Yquem is a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc with 160 g/L residual sugar and a total acidity of 5.39 g/L. It is the first certified organic vintage for the estate and has the lowest level of total sulphur ever: 234 g/L, high within the sphere of wine but comparatively low for Sauternes. The 2022 was aged for 24 months in new barrels that underwent slightly less drying than those used for red wines in order to retain some green tannins. Given the growing season, the 2022 Yquem has a surprisingly understated bouquet that demands coaxing. Scents of orange pith, passion fruit and quince are exquisitely defined, a hint of chamomile dancing around in the background. The palate is medium-bodied. Given the high level of residual sugar, what is surprising is that the 2022 does not seem a weighty or texturally unctuous Yquem, yet there is an intensity and concentration that is arresting. Vivid flavours of clementine, wild honey, quince and tangerine that effortlessly combine. The acidity almost nonchalantly counters the sensation of residual sugar, so it feels less than it actually is, the scintilla of salinity toward the finish tempting you back for more. This is a marvellous and quite cerebral Yquem for which patience is required. Drink 2030-2100.

A perfect Yquem again after the 2021, which is fresher and more refined than the 2022. The perception of sweetness is super-knit. Lots of botrytis, with turmeric, saffron, cream, roasted meringue, pine nuts, spices and dried mangoes. This is a powerful, seductive and lush wine. Ornamented and richer this year than 2021, but there is so much charm and harmony. Long and spicy, with a hint of petrol at the end. Wow. The second most concentrated Yquem after 1945, according to the winemaker. About 160 grams of residual sugar. So approachable now, but better in five or six years. It will live forever.

Combining incredible power, sweetness, and opulence with racy acidity and a touch of bitterness on the backend offsetting all the rich, honey-slathered fruits, it takes only a single sniff and sip to discern that this is one of the great vintages produced by Chateau d'Yquem. That says a lot, considering all the fabulous vintages the estate has crafted. The palate showcases its wealth of honeyed fruits alongside Indian spices and a vibrancy found in no other sweet wine. The wine envelops your palate, teeth, and gums leaving you with a zesty finish that lingers for a full 60 seconds and more! This is a legend in the making! Like all great vintages of Chateau d'Yquem, you can enjoy this with pleasure in its youth, with its sweet, ripe fruits showcasing a unique sense of honeyed purity, or you can save it for your grandchildren. Drink from 2027-2100.

Matured in French oak for two years. 2021 The Redman is displaying its excellent vintage in a purity of just-picked blackberries, wild raspberry and persimmon. Christmas cherries, rosella florals and blood plums. It's slinky as it winds down the palate. Pulpy red fruits sit generously in the middle. Oak imparts classic baking spices, nutmeg, cinnamon and ground ginger. Crisp, zingy Sauvignon Blanc finishing dry, tight and steely.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. A mix of passionfruit, lime and green apple scents leap from the glass trailed by some subtle herbaceous gooseberry and mineral notes. Crisp and zingy in its feel across the palate, Granny Smith apple, lime and passionfruit flavours are underpinned by racy acidity. Some delicate herbaceous and flinty mineral components extend across the back half. Finishes long, dry and steely with a zesty edge.

Geoff Weaver's first plantings of sauvignon blanc were in '78. This has texture and interest on its side, elevating the variety to something special and more substantial. It does show off benchmark characters of lime, passionfruit and just-ripe pineapple with sniffs of cut grass and basil herbal elements. The palate follows suit similarly, but with more depth than expected, a clatter of limey-briny acidity amongst fruitiness and subtle river-pebble mineral notes. It floods the senses, finishing long and refreshing. Very good. Drink by 2028.

A very earthy Bordeaux with dry, chalky tannins and a tertiary focused conclusion.

Midnight black dark red core with a very dark red hue. Nosing offers up aromas of blackcurrant, black olive and cigar box followed by some earth and subtle spicy leather notes. Mid weighted, the palate is very earthy with some blackcurrant, cigar box, leather and spice elements also evident. Plush and velvety with a long sumptuous finish.

One of Yalumba’s distinguished site wines, the Paradox is sourced from the Northern Barossa and is made with an emphasis on velvet like texture and the use of less new oak than many of its counterparts. Maturation taking place in French oak puncheons, with only 10% new oak employed, for a period of 16 months.
Dense pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Potent blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas waft from the glass followed by some subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, scorched earth and blackpepper notes. Rich and plush the full bodied palate is awash with blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruit. Smoky vanillin cedar, earthy mocha and peppered fennel elements lie beneath. Outstanding power with velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour appears to have tightened up a little since I last tasted it a few years ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with hints of cedar, iris, orange zest and new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with a ripe core of fruit underpinned by chalky structuring tannins. While it's approachable after a decant, it certainly merits additional patience. As readers will remember, this bottling mostly derives from dedicated parcels located further inland from Latour's famous "Enclos," next to Château Haut-Batailley. Drink 2029-2050.

The 2019 Forts de Latour is a tannic, backward wine, as it has always been. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, graphite, sage and mocha open with a bit of coaxing. Even so, the 2019 is incredibly tight at this stage. Despite its imminent release, I would not dream of touching a bottle any time soon. Rain just before harvest in this warm vintage helped keep things in check and resulted in fairly generous yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare. At the same time, the mid-palate is a bit compact, while the tannins are imposing. Drink 2029-2049.

Exquisite aromas of lavender, cigar ash and Spanish cedar with dried citrus follow through to a medium body and a solid palate with powerful, ultrafine and linear tannins. The muscle and long finish are so beautiful. Give it two or three years but already a solid wine. Drink after 2028.

A captivating nose of milk chocolate, cola, cherries, and violets, offering a soft and inviting bouquet. The palate is fully textured, opening gradually to coat the cheeks and tongue in a fine layer of chalky tannins. Juicy and succulent through the mid-palate, it bursts with citrus zest, orange and lemon pith, cranberries, and red cherries. There’s a beautiful interplay of bite and tension, with a sapdi freshness and a mineral core of crushed stones and iron. The finish ends bright, minty, and herbal, delivering great drive and persistence. 3.60pH. Drink 2026-2046.

Rich, concentrated and opulent with a long juicy yet slightly chewy conclusion.

A blend of 75% Shiraz and 25% Grenache sourced from vines between 50 to 100 years old. The Shiraz component which is matured for 16 months in 2-3 year old French (80%) and American oak (20%) barrels lends backbone, flesh and body to the wine. Whilst the Grenache which sees no oak contact brings a soft, vibrant juiciness.
Midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated dark to black raspberry and liquorice aromas lead the way trailed by some dark cherry, scorched earth, vanillin spice and blackpepper notes. Rich, concentrated and opulent in its feel across the medium to full bodied palate, succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits hold sway over a vanillin spice, scorched earth and pepper background. Centurion estate vines on deep sandy soil; matured in old French puncheons for eight months. Elegant and fragrant, and savoury with it, flush with amarena cherry, fresh redcurrant, strawberry, cranberry, rhubarb, cinnamon, musk, rosewater and sumac. This is expressly pretty and lithe, eschewing heft for vigour – with a finely structured line of nebbiolo-esque tannin – and that feels a function of site, vintage and vine material as much as purposeful stewardship. It’s no blockbuster – if that’s even relevant these days – but it surely is a lovely, lovely thing. This is an address on the rapid ascent. Drink by 2030.

This has all the hallmarks of modern-day Grenache in the high quality spectrum from this area. It’s expressive, and light-footed, though at no expense to power and detail. 100 year old bush vines rooted in the coveted sandy soils of Blewitt Springs at the Larnook vineyard. 25% whole bunch and matured in old French puncheons for eight months. Lifted white pepper sits above red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb and sweet pops of plum before an emergent savoury drive of warm sand and tilled earth builds beneath. Air unlocks further earthen notes along with rhubarb and a subtle saline twang adding allure. There’s an interesting interplay of red fruit compote, earth and spice that packs this with interest and intrigue. The palate is svelte, fine and restrained while still brilliantly intense with unmistakable old vine depth. Raspberry, plum, warm sand, and white pepper sit within fine, powdery tannins and red fruited acidity. The finish is long and wonderfully poised. There’s fine detail here, and excellent complexity. A classy release of excellent depth and character.

Oh look at this wine coming in at a heady 13%. Joe is flying into the Danger Zone, like Kenny Loggins, although the label says it goes well with ‘Russian Hip Hop’. Unusually this is from down south, Coal Valley, rather than Tamar.
This has a bit more flavour than is usual, and the acidity seems a bit keener too, and really drives the wine along. There’s white peach, green apple, a saline edge, a flicker of aniseed and spice, along with some oatmeal savoury stuff and samphire. Sports some grapefruit and lemon peel on a finish of intensity and excellent length. Even as a young wine it offers complexity and no shortage of interest, though I reckon it may be better again with another year or two in bottle. Very good.

    $2640.00 Dozen

It is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.

The Alte Reben Reserve represents the Keller family's most ambitious expression of their Burgundian varieties, a deeply personal project for Felix and Klaus-Peter that channels the same precision and drive that define their Rieslings. Sourced from 30-60 year old vines across the limestone slopes of Westhofen and Dalsheim, including parcels in Aulerde, Frauenberg and Steingrube, this blend of Chardonnay (60%) and Pinot Blanc (40%) is built for longevity and complexity. The grapes are crushed and given twelve hours of skin contact before fermenting in a mix of 228 and 1,200 litre barrels, around one-third new, sourced from leading Burgundian coopers. The result is a wine of both substance and refinement, with Chardonnay bringing breadth and power while Pinot Blanc contributes taut, mineral precision. It stands as one of the most complete articulations yet of the Kellers' vision for these varieties on Rheinhessen's limestone soils.

The Seabrook family have a long history in the Australian wine industry, dating back to 1878 when William Seabrook established one of Australia’s earliest wine merchants, W.J. Seabrook & Son. Today, fifth generation member Hamish Seabrook carries on the tradition. After graduating from Adelaide University with a bachelor of Oenology, Hamish went on to work and make wine for Best’s Great Western where industry legend Viv Thomson took him under his wing. After several other senior winemaking roles, Hamish went on to establish his own brand continuing the families long involvement in the wine industry.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from Seabrook’s Home Block vineyard located on the eastern ridge of Barossa Valley. The rows are orientated north south and the vineyard captures most of the afternoon sun, this coupled with the aspect, allow perfect conditions for early ripening. Matured for 24 months in barrel.

The 2022 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru contains 25% to 30% whole bunches this vintage. The energetic bouquet offers redcurrant and raspberry fruit, fine mineralité and tension. Hints of black truffle shavings emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s a liberal sprinkling of black pepper here, the stem addition perhaps the most tangible amongst the cuvées yet commensurate with the fruit concentration. This is another success for the estate in 2022. Drink 2026-2046.

    $430. 00
    Bottle
    $5160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Once known only to a dedicated group of Burgundy devotees due to their reputation selling much of the production to noted perfectionists Dominique Laurent and Lalou Bize-Leroy, Domaine Thierry Glantenay now enjoys no such anonymity. Formally trained as an engineer, Thierry brings those methodical and exacting skills to his winemaking, crafting ethereal Volnay and powerful Pommard that display fantastic transparency of each specific terroir. Blessed with small parcels in the best vineyards of Volnay and Pommard, Thierry has set about a gradual process of refining and perfecting how his vines are managed, and guiding the wines through vinification with a delicate touch.

Aromas of raspberries, red plums, rose petals and spices introduce the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a medium to full-bodied, pure and ethereal wine with an elegantly textural attack that segues into a vibrant core of fruit that's framed by supple, almost melting tannins, concluding with a saline finish.

The 2022 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is blended with 50% whole bunches, the most of any cuvée in Glantenay's range. The stems are quite potent on the nose, very floral - wilted roses in an antique vase, crushed stone and a touch of truffle oil. The palate is medium-bodied with brittle tannins. Quite saline, which gets the saliva flowing. This is perhaps the most powerful wine on the finish, with a long, spicy aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles offers up aromas of sweet red berries, orange rind, peonies and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and refined palate that's vibrant and precise, with a lively spine of acidity and a long, mineral finish. This excellent but little-heard-of premier cru, nestled in the valley that divides the communes of Beaune and Pommard, is a terroir that performs well in warm vintages.

From the oldest vines at the Domaine planted in 1902, the 2022 Pommard Les Saucilles 1er Cru is blended with around 30% whole bunches. The attractive nose offers blackberry, wild strawberry, crushed stone and light briny scents evoking images of the sea. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit. Fresh and vibrant, yet there is a gracefulness here that I haven't seen in recent vintages. Tender on the finish yet with no shortchanging of fruit. Excellent. Drink 2026-2046.

Deep and layered, Glantenay's 2022 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens unfurls in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, spices and licorice. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a lively core of fruit that's framed by an abundance of sweet, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, aromatic finish.

The 2022 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru includes 30% whole bunches. It has a well-defined, mineral-driven bouquet - the most complex and complete amongst Glantenay's range. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, beautifully balanced with a lovely texture. Very fresh and surfeit with minerals, this is very detailed on the finish and feels very long. This has immense promise - a Pommard to hunt down. Drink 2026-2048.

A nicely fleshed, mid weighted Chardonnay with a gently creamy finish.

Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with subtle flashes of green around the edges and a watery hue. A mix of peach, apricot and honeycomb aromas show ample intensity out of the glass with hints of butterscotch, crème brulee and spicy nougat also evident. Showing more refinement than the nose would suggest, fleshy peach, apricot and subtle honeycomb flavours are layered across the mid weighted palate. Traces of crème brulee and spice play the undercard. Nicely integrated freshness with a gently creamy medium length finish.

Rich and dense yet refined, this classic blend combines the generosity of Shiraz with Cabernets structure.

A blend of 82% Shiraz and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Shiraz vines are aged between 30 and 100 years old, and the Cabernet between 30 and 130. Yields are 2.5 tonnes per hectare with the fruit fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters and hand plunged 3 times daily. Matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (92% French and 8% American).
Impenetrable black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. A heady mix of blackberry, liquorice and blackcurrant scents greet the nostrils followed by some dark plum, vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco and bay leaf notes. Rich and dense yet refined, blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits seamlessly integrate with Cabernets blackcurrant component. The 2022 Anaperenna Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon is so attractive on the nose, with red berries and roses, abundant, glossy fruits and an attractive balance of spice to go with it. These Glaetzer wines are full-bodied yet sleek, and while this is certainly ripe, it is in no way dull or overdone because of that. It has notes of raspberry, dark chocolate, cherry (ripe in its way) and licorice. There are layers of jubes/pastilles, plump fruit, earth and plenty of ductile tannin, and oak is tucked away in there too—all things writ large yet svelte. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

A deeply coloured cabernet sauvignon, one possessed of opulent black-fruited heft and a slightly broody disposition. Ben Glaetzer's wines are no wallflowers. There is no expectation of pontificating on space or filigree. You just stare at the glass, google-eyed at its latent power and opulence. Not a herbaceous bone in this wine's torso. Just thick black fruits, licorice, earth, graphite, fine, sandy tannins and a smooth, hydraulically consistent flow of rich fruit far into the distance. Drink by 2043.

Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

Exceptional old vine Ebenezer fruit has been brought in to create this wonderfully expressive Barossa blend. The Shiraz from vines up to 100 years old and the Cabernet up to 130 years old. It’s a remarkable resource that Glaetzer has harnessed expertly to capture every last bit of that intensity and power. Rich, dark chocolate and blackberry plummy flavours swirl through a dense and concentrated palate. Having said all that, it retains an elegance and gracefulness. Drink 2025-2045.

    Ray Jordan - WinePilot.com

The great Aussie red blend from a top year and a producer nearing cult status. This is heavily Shiraz dominant – 82%, to just 18% Cabernet. From the Ebenezer sub-region, the yield overall is just two and a half tonnes per hectare. The Shiraz vines range in age between 30 and 100 years, while the Cabernet is even more impressive, between 30 and 130 years. The wine spent sixteen months maturing in hogsheads, all new, with 92% of them French and the remaining 8% American. Under cork. This is a bit special. An opaque maroon, we have notes of blackberries, cold tea, chocolate and mocha with some soy, bay leaves, dried herbs and graphite also evident. A wine with a supple texture and immense length, this is seamless, with the intensity never wavering for a moment. There is oak, but it is immaculately handled and simply adds to the overall impression of a brilliant wine. Fifteen years ahead of it, without a hiccup. It is cracking buying. Drink 2025-2040.

Rich, dense and inky with a sternly built muscular tannin structure and vibrant acidity.

Matured in new and seasoned French oak barrels for 18 months. Stunning saturation of colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep black dark purple hue. A touch restrained at first, the nose slowly offers up morello to black cherry, black plum and liquorice scents along with some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and subtle spicy fennel notes. Exceptionally rich and concentrated yet bright and youthfully fresh, morello to black cherry, liquorice and black plum fruits are framed by a muscular tannin structure and vibrant acidity.
