An amply powered yet refined Barossa Shiraz that finishes long, savoury and peppery.

Bete Noir is a blend of old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa and Eden valleys, specifically, six different parcels from the sub-regions of Moppa, High Eden, Light Pass and the Eastern Foothills. Soils vary across the sites, from thin, skeletal sandy loams in the loftier plots to the classic sand-over-red-clay in the Moppa and Light Pass regions. Vineyard age ranges between 25 and 110 years, with “45 years being a fair average across the blend”, Schell reckons.
The proportion of whole clusters varied from “everything to nothing” depending on the vineyard, with roughly 35% in the final blend. Maturation occurred in 35% new French barrels―ranging in capacity from 225-litre to 4500-litre―for 20 months before fining without filtration.
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Soaring out of the glass are liquorice, dark plum, black cherry and blueberry scents complimented by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel, dried clove and peppered dried meat notes. Rich and succulently fruited, the medium to full bodied palate is layered with black cherry and liquorice flavours which are framed by a sturdy yet nicely integrated tannin structure. Lending complexity across the back half are dark plum, fennel, subtlety smoked vanillin cedar and peppered meat elements. Amply powered yet refined in its feel it finishes long, savoury and peppery.

If you were sitting quietly in a corner, contemplating the vicissitudes of life, and a glass of this exceptional chardonnay came your way, well, all would be very well indeed. And you’d perk up. It’s a wine that tends to be scintillating in youth, driven by all manner of citrus flavours – lemon, pink grapefruit with a dash of lime but also a mille-feuille of leesy lusciousness, oak spices and a moreish savouriness. It seems powerful and explosive with its acidity, drive and energy yet manages to remain classy and complex. Drink by 2032.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended. Sealed under screw cap.  Drink 2030-2047.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

This iconic Australian Chardonnay never allows standards to drop and this is yet another stellar effort from the great Chardonnay production line. A shimmering pale lemon, we have notes of spices, lemon curd, ginger, pink grapefruit, lemongrass, florals, peaches, nectarines, jasmine and stone fruits. There is a whiff of smoky oak as well and integration is proceeding well. There is complete balance here, with focus and energy. The wine is still very young and it will certainly be better if you can wait for two or three years before opening. Then enjoy it for a further ten to fifteen years. Juicy, with a supple texture and a long and lingering finish, along which the intensity is maintained for the full journey. A cracker. Drink 2025-2040.

Tomintoul Tarn Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

High in the Cairngorms, small mountain lochs called tarns have developed due to glacial movement. The name comes from the old Norse word “tjorn” meaning pond, and some of these spring water lochs have existed for over 10,000 years, since the last ice age. Many tarns are surrounded by ancient peat. It is this peat influence that shapes the smoky, sweet and earthy character of Tomintoul Tarn. The whisky is reportedly a step up in intensity from most of the other distillery expressions. The one-litre bottle means there's more to enjoy. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Peat forward with whiffs of campfire smoke and burnt heather that open up into aromas of honey and orchard fruits. Palate: Smoky and sweet with layers of peat smoke, boiled sweets, vanilla pod and hints of soft liquorice. Finish: A nice balance of fireplace soot and vanilla cake that leaves a long sweet and smoky linger.

Rich and fleshy, the mid weighted palate sports juicy dark plum, blueberry and liquorice fruits. Concentrated yet possessing an underlying freshness, dried herb, subtle scorched earth and spice elements sit in the background. Sourced from a single block of Light Pass mataro. Pure, ripe plum, blueberry and red forest-berry fruits held in the dust of exotic spice, liminal mataro garrigue and notes of roasting meats. Floral tones abound too … violets, frangipani and something vaguely musky that I can't put my finger on. Impressive fruit purity and ripeness on the palate, packed with wild spice and dried citrus tones, tannins like little puffy clouds and a finish that has a distinct meaty facet. Me gusta! High West Barrel Select PX Sherry Finish Straight Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 49.6%

Single malt Scotch drinkers will be familiar with this increasingly popular finishing that adds notes of dates, honey and chocolate to whisky: Pedro Ximenez (aka sweet sherry) is now catching on in America, and Whisky Hunt have landed a very nice example. Blended from 8-10 year old sourced whiskeys (both corn heavy), the combination spent its last ten months in an x-sherry barrel. It still tastes like Bourbon, but not quite as you know it. For a start, the nose is thicker, deeper and more layered than most bourbons - closer to a single malt - with dates and caramel over fresher mandarine peel and orange spice cake. The palate mirrors the aromas in a viscous entry; dates and light honey build, followed by drier notes of cinnamon and white pepper. Although the finish is less pronounced, it’s also more nuanced as cocoa and a little bitter peel enter to cap things off. This is well structured - the sherry adding depth and just a little extra sweetness, while the woody and spicy notes you expect from American whiskey remain intact. 156 bottles have been imported at 49.6% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Aromas of apple, cacao nibs and maple syrup offer a sweet and balanced nose. Palate: Flavourful on the palate, with cherry woodsmoke, dates, baking spices and notes of black tea. Finish: Cherry, spices, dark chocolate. Derived Mashbill: 70% corn, 16% wheat, 14% malted barley (TN Whiskey from Tennessee Distilling); and 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley (from MGP).

It’s no big secret that the prices of Burgundy have skyrocketed in recent years and whilst the wines from Chablis haven’t risen quite as steeply it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even locate sub $50 Petit Chablis. So a $60 Premier Cru Chablis that delivers exceptional quality is indeed a rare find these days.
Francis Boudin is the third-generation vigneron at Chantemerle and the estate firmly falls in the traditional mould - he despises oak. As the story goes, his grandfather was a cooper and with so much exposure to oak during his formative years he banished it from the family cellars opting for concrete and steel alone.
Old vine material is the key to the estate’s success. While many in the region during the 1970's were re-planting vineyards to high-yielding material the Boudins were planting with naturally low-yielding vines. Along with careful vineyard management, an informed but gentle touch in the winery and judicious lees work to bring out flesh and texture, Boudin produces supple wines, that speak of place clearly layered with Chablis' prized minerality.

A beautifully shaped and intensely flavoured Premier Cru Chablis that delivers phenomenal value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle flecks of green to the edges and a watery hue. Enticing pear and lime scents jump out of the glass intermixing with wet stone, faint dried honey, oyster shell and mineral notes along the way. Beautifully shaped with a river stone like feel and intensely flavoured, the palate features pear, lime and green apple fruits which seamlessly intermesh with wet slate, oyster shell and minerally saline like elements. Agile acidity lends freshness to a long, supple finish that’s highly moreish.

2024 Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown Barbera
    King Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $36. 99
    Bottle
    $443.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the partnership of winemaker-viticulturist Tessa Brown and architect Jeremy Schmölzer, crafting wines from high-altitude vineyards in Beechworth and the King Valley. Their estate vineyard, Thorley, sits over 700m ASL and is farmed with organic practices in all but the most challenging years. Working with minimal intervention, they focus on purity, balance, and drinkability. The range includes single-site wines from Thorley, Brunnen, and Obstgarten, as well as their approachable Prêt-à series.

Sourced from the Corsini family’s La Cantina vineyard in the King Valley, this Barbera was destemmed, crushed, and fermented on skins for two weeks before basket pressing. Malolactic fermentation took place in tank or seasoned puncheon, followed by two rackings before bottling. Deep magenta in colour, it bursts with berried fragrance and bright, juicy flavours—best served chilled for an hour to enhance its vibrant charm.

    Other Reviews....
The folks at Schmölzer & Brown say that they have “very little impact on this wine’s violent fruit expression”. As in, it’s all there and there’s no stopping it. They also describe this wine as “our chilled red”, which it absolutely could be, though it also of course drinks very nicely at room temperature. It’s awash with red and blue berries, florals, twiggy spices and cool, mountain herb notes. Basically it’s crunchy, spicy, fruity and flamboyant, in the most drinkable or smashable of ways. This is great drinking right now. Drink 2024 - 2028.

From the Corsini family’s La Cantina vineyard in the King Valley. This is VS&B’s self-proclaimed chilled red. A little rubbery reduction on opening before this wine’s trademark aromas of cherry ripe and cherry pip followed by red florals, rhubarb and baking spices. Some air unveils subtle boysenberry and earthen notes, too. The palate is equally bright and playful, with bursts of red cherry, red apple, boysenberry, and blueberry framed by fine pithy tannins and juicy acidity. Chillable, yes, but delicious at room temperature. This has all the pop and crunch you need, with lovely bright fruit and ample spice complexity adding interest.

Yarra Yering remains one of Australia’s most revered wineries, seamlessly blending tradition with modern excellence. Under the guidance of winemaker Sarah Crowe, the estate continues to craft elegant, age-worthy wines that showcase the finesse of the Yarra Valley.

Underhill Shiraz is sourced from a single block planted in 1973. 50% of the grapes are fermented and matured in a 3500L upright oak cask containing 20% whole bunches, with the remainder fermented in open-top fermenters. Maturation lasts 12 months, 50% in the 3500L cask and 50% in French oak puncheons, 10% of which were new.

    Other Reviews....
From a shiraz vineyard planted in 1973 adjacent to Yarra Yering. A vivid crimson purple colour, a mix of whole-bunch and berry fermentation and maturation in large format French oak. This is a glorious shiraz, bursting with life and what will surely be a 40-year life span, so perfectly framed and balanced are its black cherry and blackberry fruit duo, tannins obediently bending the knee to the fruit. Drink 2024-2062.

James Halliday - James Halliday's Wine Companion

Underhill is a single block of shiraz on the western side of this heralded Yarra Valley estate. This block was planted in 1973. I’ve slowly been working my way through a fantastic vertical tasting of Underhill Shiraz (1989-2021) held at the estate in 2023, with notes going – here. This 2022 release was not at that tasting; I have it on the bench in front of me now.
This wine is more complex than your average bear. It clearly has some stalk influence, and it clearly presents an array of smoky, woodsy, peppery characters, as well as flashes of mescal and Campari-like herb notes. The fruit is ripe, deep, fresh and meaty at once, with ultra-long chains of grainy, smoky tannin drawing through. We’re talking red berried fruits with a darkness in their centre. This ripe, juicy Yarra Valley Shiraz has its savoury side in a firm embrace. It’s quite herbal, quite smoky, and quite tannic, all in a positive way. It has a bit of dare to it. In time, it will flourish. Drink 2028 - 2035+.

Mouthfeel, persistence, freshness; Vermentino seems to embrace these words and create a unique, food-friendly style of wine. The fruit here is from the Ricca Terra Farms vineyard in the Riverland. Loving the botanical elements on the nose from this vintage, it grabs your attention from the get-go with hints of elderflower, juniper, chamomile tea with some juicier nectarine and oyster shell notes. This transitions nicely to the palate which is medium bodied but bursting with white peach notes, honeydew melon, sea spray, white almond and juicy lime keeping the wine in balance. Moreish and vibrant in the mouth, I’m tucking into some salty elements here – charcuterie and cheese board with some fried white anchovies to help elevate the wine even more.

Concentrated blackcurrant and plum aromas rush from the glass, followed by toastier, oak-derived ones like cedar and mocha. It's a big, powerful wine with sculpted tannins and pert acidity. The oak is present but not overwhelming. Pop this in a decanter if drinking any time soon, but should open and settle over the next decade.

Old school Chardonnay that’s big on flavour and texture.

Winemaker Stuart Smith produces an old traditional style of Chardonnay that’s big on flavour and texture. The fruit is picked in several parcels across several weeks to ensure optimum physiological and organoleptic ripeness. In order to impart additional textural richness the wine was lees stirred and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. Barrels were racked at the end of the first year, the wine then returned to barrel for an additional 6 months for aging. 40% new French oak is used.

A blend of fruit from two estate vineyards in McLaren Vale, the split is Shiraz 82%, with Grenache making up the remaining 18%. The wine spent three years maturing in French oak, 15% of which was new. A dark maroon, this is plush, ripe, generous, soft and approachable. In other words, a guaranteed crowd pleaser. This is a wine full of flavour, we have notes of chocolate, dried herbs, blackcurrants, beefstock and tobacco leaves. Good focus here, this is a wine of medium length and fine balance. Sleek tannins making for very attractive drinking now and over the next five to eight years. Drink 2024-2032.

Rich, mouth filling and texturally gently creamed yet fresh with a long, refined finish.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Pronounced white peach, nectarine and dried honey scents intermingle with biscuity oak, nougat and gun flint notes. Rich mouth filling white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours subtlety infused with gun flint are draped across the palate. Notions of cashew, biscuity nougat and spice lend further interest. Gently creamed texturally it boasts superb underlying freshness, finishing long and refined.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Nutty sake like character, white peach, pie apple, Japanese ginger. This has weight and freshness, but it’s complex and nutty, has plenty of texture, nice and sappy on a finish of excellent length. I had 94 or 95 points, and I think I’ll go with the latter. Drink 2024-2032.

    Juicy, mid weighted Heathcote Shiraz.

Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Liquorice and dark plum scents are trailed by vanillin cedar, scorched earth, subtle fennel and blackpepper notes. Rich, juicy blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits have a plush feel across the mid weighted palate with some blueberry, vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and pepper elements the undercard. Fine, polished tannins with an elegant freshness to the fleshy medium to long conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Whole-berry fermented in batches, maturation in French and American oak with less than 2% viognier. A cool vintage brings out the spice and gentle florals, and it becomes one mighty-attractive feature of this wine. There’s a fineness of shiraz expression in play, all red and blue fruits, plum, earth and spice, medium bodied and elegantly delivered. Fine, bright tannins bring an energy and freshness. Drink by 2032.

Texturally round and full with concentrated fruit and fresh underlying acidity.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Pear and citrus aromas mix with hints of bees wax and flint. Rich fleshy peach and pear fruits are delivered with excellent concentration over a melon and delicate spice back drop. Texturally round and full in its feel it has fresh underlying acidity and a fruit driven finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.
