Springbank 21 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2019 bottling
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $1999. 00
    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

The 2019 edition was reported to be an outturn of 3600 bottles, drawn from a mix of 45% port and 55% rum casks. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Not sure if that was full term maturations or re-rackings. Colour: amber. Nose: a nice mix of gentle, leafy earthiness, soft tarry notes, embrocations, tobaccos and red fruit jams. Things like raspberry liquorice, jasmine tea and various kinds of glazed, crystallised and dark fruits. Dates, sultanas, quince and plums to be more precise. In time it gets a little more towards mint and eucalyptus. Really harmonious and characterful nose. Mouth: here the different cask types jar a little more I think. Various overripe citrus peels, cornflakes, muesli, caraway and a more pronounced rum note. Golden syrups, brown sugar, dried herbs, cocktail bitters and some slightly farmy/coastal Springbanky goodness underneath. Finish: good length, back to tobacco, tea tree oils, herbal resins, dried dark fruits and red jams. Comments: a tough one to score. There are parts which really work well with this elegance and gentle complexity. On the other hand it can also feel a tad dissonant at times, especially on the palate. Still, perhaps we’re being a tad too picky... 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Sothis By Maxime Chapoutier Hermitage Gin (700ml)
    FRANCE
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    Minimum 6 bottles
    ABV: 43%

Maxime Chapoutier is part of a family of winemakers who have been working in the Rhone Valley since 1808. When a botanist was enlisted to carry out research on local plants, Maxime was indirectly inspired to conduct plant distillation trials from a specific plot. It led to the creation of Sothis gin, using a base spirit derived from organically grown grapes. Our tasting found low-key aromas of bitter lemon, juniper, light ginger and white pepper that follow into a silky, medium bodied palate hinting at citrus peel, thyme, pine needles and chamomile tea, wrapped up in a peppery, medium long finish. The style here is relatively understated, so avoid heavy mixing. Botanicals include juniper, aced, chamomile, yarrow, everlasting, wild thyme, verbena and sweet clover. Batch 03 tasted. 43% Alc./Vol.

    Marionette Nocino Liqueur (500ml)
    AUSTRALIA
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 28%

A limited collaboration with 2018 World Class Bartender of the Year, Orlando Marzo saw to a February harvest of green walnuts from Michael Edwards’ orchard in the Yarra Ranges. That now forms the backbone of Marionette's Nocino. Their iconic camphor aroma is complemented by the chocolatey notes of toasted wattleseed. The tang of lemon myrtle completes the liqueur, bringing this classic Italian digestif to life. Perfect for Nocino Spritzes, Green Walnut Negronis, Nocino Tonics or simply serve over ice. 28% Alc./Vol.

Wild Island High Croft Botanic Gin (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.4%

The second gin from the team at Colonsay Brewery takes its design inspiration from the colours and contours of the island’s beautiful Kiloran Bay. Its flavour inspiration comes from the wild botanicals that grow on the island. The emphasis here is on fruits like crab apple, bramble, redcurrant, elderberries but also includes lemon balm, sea buckthorn, heather flowers, wild water mint, rosehip, bog myrtle, meadowsweet and rowan berries combined with more traditional gin baotanicals. Based on a 100% British wheat base spirit, it makes for a fantastic sipping spirit or a wonderful fruity dry Martini. 43.4% Alc./Vol.

1998 Ardbeg Single Cask No.1275 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $1999. 00
    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.4%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured. This one, in particular, has some impact crumpling to the front, bottom edge. See picture.

A single cask selection from a from first fill bourbon barrel, cask #1275 was limited to just 252 bottles. 55.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: punchy, starting in an unusual way, on hints of green olive and even capers on top of a peatiness that isn’t huge but certainly bigger than the SMWS’. The rest is rather classic young Ardbeg, without any big bourbonny notes. Seawater, peat smoke, kippers and freshly cut apples. With water: more of the same, with an emphasis on the coastal notes and a little mint kicking in. Mouth (neat): powerful and very, very ‘Ardbeg’. Ashes, liquorice, smoked salmon, pepper, ‘raw’ peat, tar, green apples and a little salt. Not really complex but impressively punchy if you like them young. With water: clean, classic young Ardbeg, on apples, peat, pepper, marzipan, gentian and seashells. Finish: quite long, with quite some saltiness and notes of walnut skin as well as a little eucalyptus and lemon balm. Faint earthiness. Note that the finish is more pleasant when undiluted. Comments: very ‘young Ardbeg’, that is to say quite simple but very satisfying. I guess a good way of coming up with more complexity would be to marry various kinds of casks, including sherry. Hey, you could even call that Rollercoaster.  85 points - whiskyfun.com

    36 Short Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml) - 40%
    South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

36 Short's latest single malt is created in the same way as their 45% ABV expression, minus the red wine cask finishing: Australian malted barley, water from an aquifer underneath the distillery and maturation in locally sourced, shaved and charred American oak barrels is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add complexity and fruity notes. The result is a modern yet balanced whisky with a well-rounded, light-weight feel bottled at an accessible 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Deep gold autumn barley. Nose: Sweet and fruity on the nose, with tart lime marmalade notes. A faint aroma of fresh cut pine and tropical fruit adds a delicate malt finish. Taste: A warm roundness encompassing the whisky with character of a tangy dried fruit medley. A hint of vanilla bean, taking you on a long, sweet fruity journey. Finish: A beautiful long finish with a taste of dried mixed fruit. Lingering with notes of apricot and peaches with a warming finish.

2006 Cadenheads Small Batch Ord 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58%

Another sleepy Diageo distillery which has been trickling out official bottlings since 2002. Honeyed malt, milk chocolate and hints of orange typify Ord's easy drinking style, but this cask-strength youngster should pack a punch. Distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2016 from two ex-Bourbon casks with an out-turn of 612 bottles. 58% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... “Chewy and mouth coating syrup. Cold meats and mellower waxy note with honey. Finish: Honeycomb, lemon, syrup and fruity notes coming through.”

Cadenheads Green Label 18 Year Old Trinidad Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Cadenhead's Green Label series are usually single-country blends, sometimes mashed together from multiple distilleries (or stills, or both), mostly from around the Caribbean and Central/South America. The labels offer less detail than the cask strength “Dated Distillation” bottlings, hence, the exact source of this rum remains undisclosed. One can only guess based on the taste as there are three distilleries on the island: Angostura, Fernandes and Trinidad Distillers. This is noteworthy for carrying a significant age statement. 672 bottles produced. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... “Fresh and floral with minty notes and a constant sweetness. An interesting and characterful rum that kept the panel wanting more.  Mango, herbal, mint leaves, bay leaves. Floral, peppermint, raw Manuka honey”.

Cadenheads Green Label 13 Year Old Jamaican Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

There is a lighter coloured equivalent to this bottling on the market, said to come from the Long Pond Distillery. This one is much darker and distilled via a pot still instead of a column. Full flavoured, ex bourbon barrel matured and of course well aged, it's described as a solid sipper, but not super heavy on the esters. 594 bottles produced. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... “Nose: Orange peel, lime, vanilla, new leather belt. Palate: Beer foam, vanilla pods, kiwi skin. Finish: Tinned pears, burnt banana, pineapple juice.”

High West Barrel Select Double Rye Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

WHA's first barrel pick for 2024 represents 228 bottles of High West Distillery Double Rye finished for 11 months in a Manhattan cask. "What's that?" you might ask. The distillery makes its own batches of the cocktail using sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters, matures the mix in ex-rye whiskey casks and markets it in 700ml bottles. Barrel #27342 was filled with an MGP mash bill of 95% straight rye / 5% malted barley and 80% rye / malted rye High West Distillate - hence the name 'Double Rye'. Both were a minimum of two years old. The nose takes a while to wake up, slowly releasing mixed nuts, light peppermint and bitter dark chocolate that's reflected on the palate as Brazil nuts, bitter dark chocolate and oily rye take over with interesting hints of dry triple sec. The texture builds with creamy vanillas and zippy rye spices maintaining momentum. This experiment takes rye on a slightly different tangent: mouth filling and enough to chew your way through, however it's hard to tell if the finishing has actually helped or hindered. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Bladnoch 30 Year Old Oloroso Sherry & Moscatel Cask Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2023 Release
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $1899. 00
    Bottle
    $22788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.5%

Batch 02 of Bladnoch's 30-year-old comes matured in just two casks - one Oloroso sherry and one Moscatel. Probably the oldest official release ever bottled, this exquisite whisky was distilled well before the new management took charge in 2017, so it really is a piece of Bladnoch history. The profile promises floral notes with dried apricots and nutmeg, rich almond and marzipan flavours along with Seville oranges and a finish that's surprisingly light and fruity with a hint of cracked black pepper. Limited to 945 bottles worldwide, the weighty decanter comes housed in a luxury carry case. 45.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Saint Felix Yuzu & Green Tea Spirit (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

Yuzu is a yellow citrus fruit with a tart juice, commonly used by chefs to flavour both savoury and sweet dishes. It’s known for its role in the popular Japanese Ponzu sauce and is also made into vinegar. The yuzu orchards and fruit-soaked baths of Japan’s alpine region set the scene for this spirit. Its creation involves cold and pot distillation to extract the yuzu and sencha green tea keynotes. The result is a light bodied, fresh and natural spirit akin to a flavoured vodka, less the confected sweetness of some brands. The pleasantly tart character of the citrus is captured alongside hints of ginger and jasmine adding warmth and complexity. The flavours lose definition with minimal dilution, but on the flipside, you could sip this straight. Keep it simple with a few cubes of ice and a slice of lemon. 35% Alc./Vol.

Hellyers Road Distillery Double Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

As the name suggests, 'Double Cask' spent five years maturing in American oak followed by a finishing period in French oak. Deeply scented, the nose offers rich vanillan oak, Ovaltine and hints of pickled ginger. The slightly grassy, bittersweet, warm-alcohol style of early Hellyer's bottlings is salient on the palate where a hint of sulphur and something almost metallic mingles with hot spices, the malt and sweet oak rebounding in a bittersweet finish. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Expect vibrant notes of raisin toast, stewed fruits and candied orange with a hint of clove.

Kilchoman Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask Matured 2023 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Like many others, we've been long-time fans of Kilchoman. Some go as far to say that no better quality peated malt is currently produced in Scotland. A small scale, hands-on approach and attention to detail make each release at least as good as the last. The 2023 PX Sherry edition is the first Kilchoman to be aged full-term in PX casks. You might consider five years old to be too young, but PX hogsheads can be aggressive; a shorter spell is often the best option to ensure a balanced result. Here, the citrus sweetness and peat smoke are beautifully married with the fruit'n'nut chocolate character of the sherry. Never too sweet, by the finish it's definitively Kilchoman; Vivacious and fresh, with a signature rush of maritime peat and tingling pepper fading into cocoa and wood smoke. Distillery character wins the day. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 23,000 bottles produced.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet sultanas and raisins with rounded peat smoke and layers of liquorice and hints of citrus sweetness. Palate: Brown sugar and malty sweetness then orange peel, citrus, dark chocolate and waves of sherry sweetness. Finish: Chocolate coated raisins, oak smoke, mixed spices and lasting PX sweetness.

    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $899. 00
    Bottle
    $10788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

The label of this limited edition states 'Exclusive Release', however it's not clear in what respect it is exclusive. Drawn from a single cask, Manzanilla matured (or finished) and with a pretty impressive age statement, it was distilled in 2001 and bottled in March 2023. The colour is spectacular. 315 units made it to market. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    ABV: 45.5%

Bladnoch expressions keep rolling in. Not to be confused with the 26YO of the same name, the NAS 'Talia' combines whiskies from the oldest casks in the distillery's archives, matured in Oloroso sherry and Californian red wine casks to provide rich fruitiness with red berry and a sweet floral character. Think blackcurrants, toffee and root ginger. 45.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Woodford's 2023 edition honours the 50th anniversary of Secretariat winning The Kentucky Derby in 1973, a unique moment in thoroughbred history that remains the fastest win in the race's history. The label features artwork from equine artist, Jaime Corum, a proud Kentuckian. The distillery states, "Secretariat is one of the most iconic thoroughbreds in horse racing history, and it’s an honour to celebrate his enduring legacy through our $1,000 Mint Julep program,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall. “The money raised from this charity program will help ensure the impact of Secretariat is told for many years to come." 45.2% Alc./Vol.

1982 Adelphi Miltonduff 40 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00
    Bottle
    $17988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

224 cask strength bottles from a single refill Bourbon hogshead make up this venerable release, one of the oldest Miltonduffs on record. During its prolonged maturation, the distillery changed ownership three times. Famed for its robust and oily character that's used in large part in the Ballantine’s blends, official bottlings were rare until 2017 when it was included in a new range called the 'Ballantines Single Malt Series'. At the time of writing, we have one bottle only. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

2010 Adelphi Inchgower 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.4%

One of our favourite lesser-known Speysiders, Inchgower often shows a touch of coastal character and waxiness aligning it with several North Coast distillates. Maturation in a Palo Cortado sherry butt makes this edition a variation on classic sherried styles with one taster describing it as "...a creamy-sweet sherry board with full fruit that is pleasant and lovely... you can really notice the cream sherry." 57.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Given the sales of Johnnie Walker Black in Asian countries, it's easy to find someone from the region who likes peaty whisky, which is why Big Peat bottled this special edition just for the Taiwanese market. Colorfully labelled, cask strength, non chill filtered and very, very peaty, what's not to like? The outturn was just 720 bottles, so it's also a genuine limited edition. 53.9% Alc./Vol.

There was a London edition from Big Peat, so why not an Edinburgh edition? This highly successful series from Douglas Laing forms part of the 'Big Peat World Tour'. As you'd expect, the whisky inside is distinctly Islay with peated malt, bonfire ashes and salty rock pools galore. The outturn was tiny - just 180 bottles at 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

New vintage just landed. "...excellent young sherried Glenfarclas." - whiskyfun.com

Although it's not certain when this series started, there have been a number of annual Christmas bottlings from Glenfarclas. Through the 1980s they were cask strength and came with big age statements. More recent bottlings have landed at approximately ten years of age. The 2010 edition had and outturn 5,400 bottles. All the right ingredients such as 100% maturation in Oloroso Sherry casks, zero chill filtration and a 46% ABV add up to a quality limited edition that's more than just a label change. Some will stash this away in collections, but we'd like to think most bottles will get opened and shared in the spirit for which they were intended. Whiskyfun's enthusiastic notes below. Distilled December 2010 / bottled 2022. Probably a European exclusive, though not confirmed. One shipment only.

Other reviews... Aged in oloroso sherry. Aren't we a bit late once more? I'm noticing that they keep calling themselves 'a Highland'. Colour: full gold. Nose: very similar whisky, this one being just a notch nuttier and with more oranges. Perhaps…. We're extremely close, nonetheless. In cases like this one, the taster must be careful not to swap his/her glasses, or everything's ruined. Mouth: ditto. You would almost believe this was the same batch, but we won't complain, it's excellent young sherried Glenfarclas. Finish: perhaps a little more chocolate and fig jam? Comments: merry Christmas (what?) 86 points - whiskyfun.com

This is the first in a new series that's exclusive to travel retail. We've managed to secure a small allocation from a secret source.

"The Spice Road " was created by master blender, Jim Beveridge, to evoke the aromas of Asia. It's one of a series collectively known as "The Explorers Club Collection'" in reference to John Walker's pioneering travel around the world to establish markets for his whiskies back in the 1800s. The Spice Road is the first in a sub-series named the Trade Route Series - the whiskies are inspired by the cultural richness that can be found on three of the world's great trade routes.

Spice Road will be followed by 'The Gold Route", with tropical flavours designed to reflect the aromas of the Caribbean and Latin America, due for release in March or April next year. Finally, Johnnie Walker ''The Royal Silk Route'', the most expensive of the line-up, will hit airport shelves in May or June. We'll see if we can source these releases as they go to market. 40% Alc./Vol.

A travel retail exclusive delivering an extra smoky hit to the famous Green Label Pure Malt. The blenders have upped the input from Caol Ila distillery on Islay, ensuring a ‘rich, fruity sweetness’ that’s complemented by flavours of peat smoke. The no-age-statement malt blend also includes whisky from Clynelish, Glenkinchie and Cardhu.

Jim Beveridge, master blender for Johnnie Walker, said: ‘As whisky makers, we’re passionate about flavour, and creating this exclusive travel retail variant of our blended malt whisky has given us an opportunity to showcase a rare blend of rich malts.’

Doug Bagley, managing director of Diageo GTME, said the release is designed to broaden the selection of malts available to shoppers in travel retail. Expect aromas of wood smoke, spice, layers of orchard fruits and sandalwood. Very limited stocks. 43% Alc./Vol.

The final addition to the Johnnie Walker Explorers' Club Series - "The Royal Route" was launched in 2013 as a Travel Retail exclusive.

Developed as a 'luxury' whisky, Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge comments, "We sought out only the very finest, beautifully balanced blends that have deep evocative flavours and a character to match. On the nose, there is a vast array of rich fruity flavours including apple, pear, fig and peach. Reflective of the beauty, rarity and exotic nature of the luxury goods that were exchanged on the royal trade route, it has an intense and complex flavour with notes of dried fruit and toffee, handsomely balanced with a subtle woody sweetness and a lingering wispy aromatic smoke. THE ROYAL ROUTE delivers far more depth of character, with richer, multiple layers on the palate."

This edition is inspired by the majestic history and the sights of the royal trading route, famed for bringing the luxuries of the world to the hands of Kings. The travelers' tales of the legendary journeys that took place on this road, the precious silks, Persian ornaments, diamonds and pearls that were traded along it, inspired Jim Beveridge to create what is the most opulent variant in the series.

"...the texture and intensity of the barley on arrival is borderline brilliant..." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible

The latest in the Travel Retail 'Legends' series honours the splendour of the Cadboll Cup, a 16th century silver goblet. A work of Scottish artistry that combines mysterious French influences in its design, it has remained a treasured artifact, kept near the Glenmorangie's Highland home. As a nod to the artist's inspirations, Bill Lumsden has extra-matured this whisky in high-end French barriques which previously held Muscat and Sémillon grapes adding tempting, dessert-like flavours, hinting at the sweet wines of the past that the Cadboll Cup might once have held.

Initially low-key, this benefits from 5-10 minutes in in the glass: Pears, apple crumble, fruit pastries, honey and orange zest are all suggested, with cocoa and oak shavings drying the nose-feel. It's intense at 43%, with a mildly bittersweet attack; Oily then fruity with orange spice cake, peel freshness and warming spirit to finish. The aftertaste is medium long, developing richness while maintaining the fruity-vanilla trajectory. Shows more spice and kick than your average Glenmorangie. Add a little water to soften and accent the citrus and vanilla. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… neither the nose nor finish is quite up to par with the outstanding delivery – indeed, the finale is pretty bitter... But the texture and intensity of the barley on arrival is borderline brilliant, as is the most wonderful caramel which frames it with a buttery sweetness. 86.5 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2019

...Part of Glenmorangie’s Legends collection, this was finished in casks that previously held sweet French white wines. Sweet red berries on the somewhat shy nose, with developing low-key honey and vanilla. Nicely textured, with a palate of honey, caramel, milk chocolate, shortbread, and lots of lively spice. Lengthy in the finish, with more caramel and milk chocolate, plus strawberry and ginger.

The Glenallachie batches continue to roll out. Their quality and style have received acclaim with the bar set high early (readers may recall the fourth batch was awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2021). Using various proportions of sherry and bourbon barrels in the mix, Batch 9 promises a typically effusive malt, described as bursting with aromas of mocha, heather honey, sweet raisins and dried red berries while the palate features lashings of cinnamon spice, molasses and honeycomb followed by ginger and dark chocolate on the finish. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and natural colour.

The tenner is the only cask strength expression in Glenallachie's core range, usually aged in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and oloroso puncheons with a small amount of virgin oak and other casks thrown in for good measure. These editions are known for being surprisingly approachable uncut, offering up a well-balanced blend of sweet dark fruit, rich malt, baking spice and chocolate flavours coalescing into a remarkably gentle finish. The seventh instalment of Glenmorangie's highly anticipated annual Private Collection, 'Milsean' (pronounced meel-shawn, meaning 'sweet things' in Gaelic) has caused quite a stir with the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association). The whisky is part of an industry push to experiment with maturation techniques, with Glenmorangie's Dr Bill Lumsden at the forefront.

Initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks for an undisclosed period of time, the finishing process under scrutiny saw the re-toasting of red wine casks sourced from the Duoro region in Portugal, resulting in an increased amount of caramelised sugars inside the oak - a questionable "flavour addition" as viewed by the SWA, which is not permitted in the production of Scotch Whisky.   "Normally, the wine barrels are scraped clean before re-toasting and being used for finishing. Then we’d just kind of wait to see what sort of flavour profile we ended up with.” explains, Lumsden.

Needless to say, the SWA did not put a halt to this release. The result is a malty, confectionary delight;   "Extra-maturing Glenmorangie in heavily toasted red wine casks has allowed us to create a whisky recalling a bygone era". says Lumsden. "A glass of Milsean transports me straight to an old-fashioned sweet shop".

    Approximately 60,000 bottles available worldwide.

Tasting note: Polished brass. Creamy vanilla malt with later evidence of peppermint rock lolly. Second pass finds evidence of candied orange peel / orange barley sugar. Creamy entry leads into a semi-sweet, full bodied, peppery attack. The underlying peppermint freshness is almost rye-like. Some plummy sweetness and increased oak input at the finish. Creamy choc-fudge and light ginger bread aftertaste. Delicious whisky, but don't expect anything profound. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... the odd kumquat does battle with a big vanilla oak kick... opens up far more on delivery than it does on the nose: juicy barley goes on full salivating duty. Light spices pulse while a tangy marmalade (thick cut) ramps up the sharpness; the marmalade bitterness continues, but slowly morphs into a cocoa theme. Superb weight and pace to the development helped by the malt being on standby at all times. A quite beautiful malt which goes out of its way to put the orangey in 'Morangie. 94 points 46% Alc./Vol.

    Note: No gift box supplied.

Previously only available as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases program, the 2011 edition was the first to be bottled at the classic Talisker strength of 45.8%, instead of cask strength. Outurns were typically around 20,000 bottles annually.

Other reviews... Talisker is slowly becoming Diageo's most 'animated' malt name, while most other distilleries remain very quiet (some would say elegantly self-assured). This year alone, we see the third new NAS expression, namely Dark Storm, which may be to Storm what Double Black is to Johnnie Black. Or not... I think this was the first 25yo bottled at Talisker's usual lower strength instead of the previous 'high strength' levels. The last earlier version that we've tried was the 2008 at 54.2%, brilliant stuff (WF 91). Colour: full gold. Nose: a completely different planet after the Dark Storm, this is smoother of course, but also more complex, with some lilac, tangerines, roses, almonds, this very 'tropical' smokiness that only old peaters can display, beauty cream, brine, oysters... It's a lovely nose, delicate and subtle. Mouth: once again, a slightly smoother version of an old Talisker but power is there. It's no straight brute as older versions could be (remember the 62% vol? Or was that the 20yo?) but it's not lacking oomph. Smoked overripe apples and lemon curd plus brine and kippers. There. Finish: long, maybe a notch woodier, with this feeling of strong green tea but also a perfect brine. Little pepper this time. Comments: I know some whisky lovers and Talisker aficionados were shocked by the drop in strength and in theory, I should be shocked too, but let's be honest, this remains a mightily powerful dram. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

...Initially salty, then sweet and spicy on the nose, with summer berries, heather honey, and an earthy note, plus subtle peat. Spicy and drying on the slightly waxy palate, with licorice, aniseed, and prominent peat embers. The finish is medium in length, peppery, and relatively tannic. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com

The Explorers' Club Collection which was released over 2012 and 2013 to honour the Johnnie Walker Whisky Traders has always been scheduled for Duty Free stores only. We've managed to secure tiny quantities from a secret source in order to satisfy Australian followers of the brand who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to obtain these limited editions. So far the Trade Routes series has included The Spice Road, The Gold Route and The Royal Route. However, there's a missing link that's arguably the most collectable of all.

Jan van den Ende , writing for 'Best Shot Whisky Reviews' explains, "It is likely that The Adventurer was the first of a new series within The Explorer's Club Collection. However a law suite was launched by the existing real life Explorer's Club that included such legendary names as Buzz Aldrin and Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Club funds scientific Research and Education and did not want their name used for commercial purposes without their permission. A judge ruled in favour of the Club in August 2014 which forced Diageo to rethink their strategy with regards to the Explorer's Club Collection. As a result, the Adventurer has become almost a rarity and a collector's item despite its humble ambitions."(See: www.bestshotwhiskyreviews.com/ for more).

Note: Plastic grip on cap has a chunk missing, cork seal is still intact.

Mezcal de pechuga (pechuga translates to ‘breast’ in Spanish) is made when a finished mezcal is redistilled with local fruits, grains and nuts, and a raw piece of protein (typically a chicken) is hung over the still, cooking in the emanating vapors. Traditionally, this is a style of mezcal produced for special occasions and consumed locally—there are as many different versions as there are distilleries. QQRQ’s stunning, vegetarian-friendly recipe trades the poultry for a homemade mole paste. This paste is made to a traditional recipe by the Méndez family in Santiago Matatlán and includes chile Guajillo, chile Ancho, sesame seeds, almonds, peanuts, garlic, onion, raisins, bananas and cacao. It’s thought to be the first commercial release of its kind.

Carlos Méndez uses the QQRQ Espadin agave as the base. Following the second distillation, the mole paste is added and the spirit is rested to infuse for two weeks before a final, third distillation.

Tasting note: Clear. Unadulterated and penetrating whiffs include sweet, sappy, herbal, rubbery aromas with a smokey/saline edge. Intense and engaging in an oily wave of char-grilled capsicum, spent pipe tobacco, exotic agave and white pepper flavours. The finish is vaguely fruity, sweet and grassy with lingering wood smoke. Potent and beautifully balanced. 50% Alc./Vol.

There are many bottlings of Johnnie Walker, however few Australian whisky enthusiasts will be familiar with Johnnie Walker Gold Label. Until recently, Gold Label was reserved exclusively for the duty free market. The product has now been released at the retail level and provides lovers of Johnnie Walker with an opportunity to taste the portfolio’s "older brother".

Conceived by Alexander Walker in 1920 for a centenary blend, Gold Label had to wait another 30 years to see the light of day, due to shortages of aged malts caused by the First World War. It remained as jottings in a notebook until the early 1950s when, shortly after Alexander's death, the Johnnie Walker master blender completed this unfinished symphony. However, this time shortages caused by the Second World War, meant that bottlings were exclusively reserved for the company's blenders and directors. From its smoky, caramel and vanilla aroma to its creamy, honeyed taste, this Scotch whisky finishes with a light and lingering spiciness. It's unique character comes from an alchemic blending of 15 whiskies, at the heart of which is Clynelish, the rare Highland malt whisky made from spring water that flows over veins of pure gold.

Tasting note:Nose: Big, soft-hearted nose: honeycomb, meaad, exotic spice, rose petal, butter, light wood and ozone. Palate: Hugely silky and ripe: a whiff of smoke, peach, mango. All very rich, waxy and long. Finish: Soft, honeyed and gentle with some light smoke. Comment: Voluptuous and deeply sexy. More of a cousin to Black than a brother. "A triumph of Blending" 97 points.
    - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2014.

If you've been a little underwhelmed by Johnny Blue of late, this might persuade you to revisit the brand: A super limited natural strength bottling of the world famous super blend. This has been a game changer for more than a few 'malt-only' devotees, however, it's only ever been scheduled for Travel Retail. Named "Blue Label 'The Casks Edition'", it's blended from a small selection of their finest casks that were hand picked by Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge. He comments, “Only one in ten thousand of our casks have sufficient character for Blue Label and in creating this special edition we really wanted to showcase the incredible flavours that come from the casks themselves”.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold with considerable legs. Patience is key here as this gradually unfolds over 5-10 minutes, developing from a shy and slightly off-key opening , to toasty grains, smoked almonds, dusty cocoa and soft whispers of smouldering, earthy peat. The later stages offer up dried fig, poached pear and manuka honey plus added sweet spice. So poised and softly spoken you would never believe the ABV.This is light on its feet, yet densely packed and almost impossibly wound up with orchard fruits, honeyed cereals and smoke in such a seamless way that it's difficult to identify individual flavours. Concludes with a delicate earthy, peaty tang. Subtle but long. A little water broadens the profile and expands the fruity-cereal aspect. 55.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... You don't mess with the Johnnie Walker brand name casually, so we expect greatness, and boy, do we get it here. This has a dusty, smoky nose with dried apricot and grape, and the whisky is gossamer-soft on the palate, with sweet pear and honey evolving on top of an oaky rich heart before a tidal wave of pepper and peat, and a delightful spice smoke and oak conclusion. Magnificent. 94 points

With Cardhu single malt at the heart of the blend, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge has used whiskies matured for at least ten years in first-fill American Oak casks to create this latest expression. He finished the Scotch in ex-rye whiskey casks, creating a complex new whisky with creamy vanilla notes transitioning to a spicier finish.

“I believe that whisky is ever evolving and experimental in nature and I am pleased to present the first Rye Cask finished Blended Scotch Whisky” said Master Blender Jim Beveridge. “Johnnie Walker Select Casks is a unique style of Scotch that blends the flavour characteristics of bourbon and rye with some of the classic signature notes and smoothness of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky.

Number 7 in the series, entitled "Time Slip", is one of the more unique bottlings. Blended back in the 1970s, this whisky contained both Karuizawa malt as well as Kawasaki grain distillate, which was laid down to rest under glass. Fast forward to the 1980s and the blend was transferred to ex-Karuizawa Spanish Oak for finishing, quite a long one at that being bottled in 2015. One of only 140 bottles, this looks to be one of the more drinkable releases from two legendary distilleries. Collectible.

Bardstown Bourbon Co. Fusion Series #9 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48.4%

Originally blending sourced whiskeys, the Bardstown Bourbon Co. has been releasing small amounts of its own Bourbon under the Fusion Series label since 2019. Essentially, these are sourced whiskeys married with increasing amounts of their own stocks across nine different editions. The Fusion Series culminated in 2022 when it was discontinued, giving way to the distillery's own output under the Origin Series label. A small parcel of the final edition has made it to Australia and we received a small sample. The whiskey's sweetish nose is contrasted by a slightly drier-rye feel to the delivery, akin to eating dark rye bread, but with a buttery topping to help you chew through it. In this case, the oiliness of the spirit combined with a dollop of vanilla serve the same effect. Delicate mint adds a final rye flourish before wood tannins narrow down the finish. Stylish.  48.4% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Very high rye personality but just never seems to get the balance right. That said, intermittently a pretty delicious experience when the rye does get a clear run. 89 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...The Fusion Series swan song, billed as their “favorite creation to date,” features a similar mix of sourced 12-year-old Kentucky (30%) and house-distilled bourbon with the BBCo. portion comprising a four grain mashbill paired with a rye bourbon, again both four years old. Fittingly, the nose on this one is the most mature I’ve yet encountered; less bright and fruity, more sultry and wood-driven. That’s not to say it’s oaky in the least. In fact, it’s surprisingly gentle with airy layers of torched sugar, Andes Mints, and pecan pie. The palate is approachable and well-balanced with an early, warming baking spice that carries across the sip, enhanced by notes of rich caramel sauce, milk chocolate fudge, RedHots, and buttery snickerdoodles. The finish is lush with a black pepper spice and slowly fading notes of dark cherry, tobacco, and cola. A fitting sendoff for an impressive series. 96.8 proof - drinkhacker.com

"...Green River Straight Bourbon nails it out of the gate..." - breakingbourbon.com

Crafted on the historic Green River campus in Owensboro, Kentucky, Green River is an industrial distillery with roots back to 1885 when J.W. McCulloch first marketed his product as “The Whiskey Without A Headache”. The slogan later changed to “The Whiskey Without Regrets,” in order to avoid liability for misleading medical claims. Over that time, numerous brands have been made there including Ezra Brooks, Mellow Corn, Medley Brothers, Old Medley, Five Brothers and Kentucky Beau. The distillery has also had several different owners and names. Most recently, Terressentia Corporation purchased the plant in 2014 and began renovations. In 2016, acting Master Distiller, Ron Call passed the torch to his son, Jacob, and in 2020, the distillery reclaimed its original title and Distilled Spirits Plant number (DSP-KY 10). Thus, the Green River brand which had largely faded from memory was reborn exactly where it originated. The product launch made an impact in the value Bourbon segment - so much so that Bardstown Bourbon bought the company the following Summer. The eponymous whiskey is distilled from a mash bill of 70% Corn, 21% Winter Rye, 9% Malted 2 and 6 Row Barley, then aged for over five years. Our tasting found an initially rye-accented whiskey where the dry, nutty and spicy character of the grain dominates before opening to a sweeter side. The delivery takes place in a delicious chocolatey setting, followed by a peachiness on the palate, refreshed by muddled mint. The overall style and high rye content makes this a little bit like Sazerac, but with a notable step up in body, intensity and definition. Besides pulling up slightly short, there's very little to dislike about this affable Kentuckian. Bottled at 90 proof (45%) without chill filtration.

Other reviews... salivating to puckering grain make for a dramatic entry with a sugar-candy fruitiness making up the midground. Barley sugar and heather honey sit well with the lemon blossom honey; slightly tart and would be short were it not for a metallic uplift. Tangy, even when some vanilla makes up ground; a thoroughly enjoyable character Bourbon with many contrasting features. 89.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...Aromas of vanilla, Tootsie Roll, caramel, and cinnamon meet more fruity, acidic scents of lime, lemon, and pineapple on the nose, with a sweeter note of fresh melon. Lots of chocolate and pistachio nuttiness on the palate; it's also spicy and offers notes of bitter espresso and pepper spice. The finish is also very chocolaty and has a pleasant tartness. Well-executed flavors, though a bit short at the end. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Green River Straight Bourbon nails it out of the gate with their 5 year old stock. What makes it work is that it’s an incredibly easy sipping bourbon thanks to an agreeable flavor profile. Despite being only 90 proof, it still packs ample intensity and a pop of heat. It’s not overly complex and the finish is on the shorter side, yet it only takes one sip to know this bourbon works. If you’re looking for very drinkable bourbon at a very reasonable price, Green River Straight Bourbon is a fantastic place to start. - breakingbourbon.com
