Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Been a while since a DB wine hit my desk. Well, a brown paper bag in this case.
Generous, obvious pinot noir of concentration, dark cherry and pulpy berry fruit character, judicious twiggy-woody spices and a shround of light, fine but firming tannin. Feels deep and dark, brooding in a way, a little dried out through the finish and a touch of prune and date creeping in generally, but a lush, warming pinot of depth is here.

Made with 10% whole bunches and matured in French puncheons (33% new). A medium ruby garnet. A little reduction, which quickly blows off to reveal aromas of wild strawberries, damson plums, a little rose petal and subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. There's good intensity on the medium-bodied palate together with fine but firm tannins. This will only get better over the next four to six years, if not longer.

Denton is owned and operated by father & son, John & Simon Denton. With their combined experience in architecture & hospitality, they established the property in 1996 and planted the vineyard between 1997 & 2004. The "View Hill" vineyard is situated in Yarra Glen on an isolated hill set over granitic sandy soil on a north-facing aspect. Luke Lambert has overseen winemaking since 2015, contributing his years of Yarra Valley experience making great Chardonnay & Pinot Noir.
Pinot Noir is grown on the very top of the North Eastern slope where it receives more gentle morning sunlight and does not see so much of the afternoon heat. The vineyard is planted at a very high density of 1.3m x 0.8m which contributes heaps of power and concentration. Wild fermented on skins (with a 60% Wholebunch inclusion) for 21 days with frequent plunging, the wine is then pressed to French Oak Puncheons (13% being new oak) for maturation. The 2021 growing season has resulted in a wine with heaps of bright, fresh red and black fruit, and floral aromas while supported by fine tannin and good structure from acidity.

There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. In its youth, there’s a prettiness as complexity will come with age. Drink by 2033.

The Dexter family vineyard was planted in 1987. Tod Dexter himself has 40 years of winemaking experience. I think he must have started making wine at aged 12. Excellent release. Dexter, the TV series, held me for a few series, but then waned when I couldn’t continue believing Michael C Hall as the serial killer protagonist. It just started to fray at the edges. A shame when series do that. That first series though… anyways, Tod ‘no extra d’ Dexter, is one heck of a quality producer of Mornington Peninsula regional staples. Here’s the anticipated 2017 release.
It’s a more assertive release from Dexter, a little less delicate, but still well under the boxing weight of most pinot noir from the region. It holds its succulence and feathery tannins well, it’s loaded with cherry juice and pomegranate fruit scents and flavours, it offers a sprinkle of herb n spice to taste. It’s exceptionally long in flavour too. Indeed, it’s a beautiful wine when you take stock of it all, and best of all, drinkability is high. A really lovely expression once more. Drink 2018-2026.

Dilworth and Allain sounds a bit like a folk music duo from the ’70s to my ears. Debut album here being ‘Doug’s Vineyard’. Winemakers are now caretakers of said vineyard, and have worked at storied producers such as Castello dei Rampolla, Lafon, and Paul Pillot. Oh, and Eastern Peake. Here we go then.
Sour cherry, raspberry, spice and fresh mint, slight dusty earthiness. It’s very fine and light, feathery almost, with a spicy and sappy and bitter orange cast to the acidity, gentle dusty tannin, nice energy, and a sour cherry finish of good length offering perfume and spice. In some respects much like a light Nebbiolo, which I like, though comes with the caveat that it’s delicate and perhaps what you might call a wine with ‘good bone structure’. I think it will age very well.

The first thing you notice is the name, Overnoy. This one is not to be confused with the legendary estate in Pupillin although Guillame's Grandfather was a brother to Pierre Overnoy and their Poulsard is propagated from cuttings from Arbois-Pupillin. This estate is located in Orbagna, in the south of the Jura in the region of Sud Revermont. Guillaume came back to the family estate in 2013 and has been working full time since then. In 2014 he began conversion of the estate of 5.5 hectares to organic cultivation. They have all five Jura varieties planted and specialize in Trousseau which does particularly well in their area. The vines are grown mostly in Orbagna but they also have a single hectare further north in Cesancey. All vines are hand tended and farmed organically, always have been. Vinification is sensitive, observational, and skilful - generations of experience come in very handy.
Pinot Noir is something Guillaume likes to drink and he has an interest in so he excels at it in his winery. This is has bright cherry, spice and sous bois complexity, in the mouth it shines with crystal bright, clean and pure with crisp and bright little red fruits and spice at the core and the Jura's fresh acidity driving it on the finish. A superb Jura Pinot with brightness and elegance.

Ripe and appealingly fresh aromas include a mix of various red berries and earth where the latter is also present on the surprisingly powerful middle weight flavors that offer solid depth and persistence with only a trace of finishing rusticity. Drink from 2024+.
86-89 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Bourgogne Roncevie is very high-toned on the nose with cassis and maraschino scents, quite floral but missing a little delineation. The palate is ripe and sweet on the entry, fine acidity, well balanced with a crisp if short black cherry finish. A straight to the point Bourgogne Rouge. Drink 2023-2028.

Neal Martin - VinousJust racked to tank. A rich heady purple. This is much deeper and richer in dark cherry mode than the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. Very striking, with a pleasing freshness at the back. Cheerful, exuberant, juicy with a drier note from good tannins. The fruit comes storming back behind, exceptionally long, morello cherry with a thread of more mineral red fruit.

An exceptionally fresh, cool and admirably pure nose offers up notes of wild berries and newly turned earth. There is excellent density to the powerful and serious medium-bodied flavors that brim with sappy dry extract while exhibiting excellent length on the robust and rustic finale. This is a very good Gevrey villages and well worth considering provided you have at least some patience. Drink from 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a lovely, very pure and well-defined nose, the oak here beautifully integrated. Once again there is a lovely sense of freshness and tension suffusing the ripe aromas of plum, violet and dark raspberry that continues onto the rich, caressing and mouth coating flavors that possess unusually good power in the context of what is typical for Ruchots on the long, raspy and firm finale. This too is a wine to buy and forget but it has the potential to be splendid in time. Drink from 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru has a ripe and quite floral bouquet, mainly black fruit here, briary and a touch of peony. This has more finesse than the Chesaux. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, ripe opening. Good depth, yet backward compared to others, with just a touch of orange rind and brown spices on the finish. Harmonious from start to finish, give this 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2027-2048.

2014 Domaine Arlaud Morey Saint DenisBurgundy, FRANCE$115. 00Bottle$1380.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkCyprien Arlaud, who directs this domaine which owns 15 ha and farms a total of 18 ha, describes 2014 as a vintage that “finally had a good and even flowering that ultimately gave us pretty good yields and in any event the best since 2009. In fact I did a green harvest for the first time since 2004. The growing season was decidedly advanced and I thought that we might have an end of August beginning of September harvest, but the cooler and wet July and August conditions slowed the vegetative cycle. As to the topic of the vintage regarding the Suzukii problem we had almost zero trouble save for a parcel of young vines in Charmes-Chambertin where the berries had thinner skins. We chose to begin picking on the 16th of September and there was surprisingly little sorting necessary as the fruit was clean and ripe. Potential alcohols were in the 12 to 12.5% range and I chaptalized a few wines in order to have 12.5% as that is sufficient in my view. In terms of the vinifications I used a small amount of whole clusters in the 1ers and grands crus, which is to say between 20 and 30%. I really like the style of the wines and if the summer weather had been normal I am convinced that 2014 would have been a truly great vintage'

Reduction presently dominates the nose though there is good freshness and drive to the attractively textured middle weight flavors that possess solid depth and length on the mildly rustic finale. This should be approachable after only a few years of bottle age.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2014 Morey Saint Denis Villages, which is matured in used wood, was showing just a little reduction on the nose. Unfurling in the glass with notes of raw cocoa, blackcurrants, sweet spices, vanilla pod and cedary oak, Rousseau's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with succulent acids and powdery structuring tannins, concluding with an expansive, lactone-inflected finish. It's deeper and richer than I perceived it to be when I tasted it 2018, but it's also surprisingly strongly marked by its time in barrel—especially since this cuvée sees no new oak. Drink 2026-2050.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers brambly red berry fruit on the nose, hints of crushed stone that percolate through with aeration. The palate is more cohesive and fleshier than the Clos du Château: tart red berry fruit, black pepper and a light sous-bois note on the finish. This should be approachable after two or three years. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and sapid, with lively acids, good depth at the core and fine structuring tannins that subtly assert themselves on the finish. The 2016 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding with aeration to reveal a deep and brooding bouquet of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with notions of grilled meats, ceps, peonies and iodine. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a muscular chassis of ripe tannin that's cloaked in a core of vibrant and concentrated fruit, concluding with a long and thrillingly carnal finish. It will be fascinating to compare this with the qualitatively similar but stylistically very different 2015 vintage when both wines have 20 years on the clock. Drink 2030-2066.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2016 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is a little subdued on the nose with delineated red cherry, crushed strawberry and crushed stone aromas. Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)Here too there is just enough wood in evidence to mention on the gorgeously spiced and intricately layered aromas of essence of red currant, floral, plum, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. This is a very, very powerful wine that is seriously impressive in every respect. In a word, brilliant. Drink through 2041+.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, lively acids and a muscular chassis of ripe tannins that's largely concealed by a prodigious core of fruit. Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)As is often the case, this is more restrained than the Bèze and more deeply pitched as well with its cooler array of strikingly spicy red and dark currant aromas that are more heavily cut with freshly turned earth scents along with plenty of floral and sauvage influences, all of which is again trimmed in just enough oak influence to point out. The exceptionally rich, dense and highly energetic full-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and a pungent minerality on the brilliantly complex and explosively long finish. This is a classic example of power without weight because despite the imposing size of the '16 Chambertin, the overall impression is one of harmony and grace. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is just a glorious success. Vivid red fruit, Morello cherries, wild strawberry and pressed violets on the nose, the aromatics here feel so animated and exquisitely defined. The palate is perfectly balanced with a killer line of acidity: crystalline red fruit, filigree tannins and more freshness than it knows what to do with. There is a sense of "channeled intensity" in this Chambertin and whilst there is no question that it is a 20- to 30-years wine, I felt no guilt in polishing this off in its youth. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink through 2037+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, floral bouquet although, there is some reduction to contend with, that will be gone by the time of bottling. But one senses that this is more brooding.
