While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Savoury edged pinot noir shows dark and sour cherry scents, pepper, brambles, dusty earthy notes. Really like this start. Lean and light in flavour but has a lithe appeal, mouthwatering amaro-like acidity, succulent and fine tannins. Very fine boned wine with distinction and finesse. You’ll have to like them fine!

Dilworth and Allain sounds a bit like a folk music duo from the ’70s to my ears. Debut album here being ‘Doug’s Vineyard’. Winemakers are now caretakers of said vineyard, and have worked at storied producers such as Castello dei Rampolla, Lafon, and Paul Pillot. Oh, and Eastern Peake. Here we go then.
Sour cherry, raspberry, spice and fresh mint, slight dusty earthiness. It’s very fine and light, feathery almost, with a spicy and sappy and bitter orange cast to the acidity, gentle dusty tannin, nice energy, and a sour cherry finish of good length offering perfume and spice. In some respects much like a light Nebbiolo, which I like, though comes with the caveat that it’s delicate and perhaps what you might call a wine with ‘good bone structure’. I think it will age very well.

The first thing you notice is the name, Overnoy. This one is not to be confused with the legendary estate in Pupillin although Guillame's Grandfather was a brother to Pierre Overnoy and their Poulsard is propagated from cuttings from Arbois-Pupillin. This estate is located in Orbagna, in the south of the Jura in the region of Sud Revermont. Guillaume came back to the family estate in 2013 and has been working full time since then. In 2014 he began conversion of the estate of 5.5 hectares to organic cultivation. They have all five Jura varieties planted and specialize in Trousseau which does particularly well in their area. The vines are grown mostly in Orbagna but they also have a single hectare further north in Cesancey. All vines are hand tended and farmed organically, always have been. Vinification is sensitive, observational, and skilful - generations of experience come in very handy.
Pinot Noir is something Guillaume likes to drink and he has an interest in so he excels at it in his winery. This is has bright cherry, spice and sous bois complexity, in the mouth it shines with crystal bright, clean and pure with crisp and bright little red fruits and spice at the core and the Jura's fresh acidity driving it on the finish. A superb Jura Pinot with brightness and elegance.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Bourgogne Roncevie is very high-toned on the nose with cassis and maraschino scents, quite floral but missing a little delineation. The palate is ripe and sweet on the entry, fine acidity, well balanced with a crisp if short black cherry finish. A straight to the point Bourgogne Rouge. Drink 2023-2028.

Neal Martin - VinousJust racked to tank. A rich heady purple. This is much deeper and richer in dark cherry mode than the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. Very striking, with a pleasing freshness at the back. Cheerful, exuberant, juicy with a drier note from good tannins. The fruit comes storming back behind, exceptionally long, morello cherry with a thread of more mineral red fruit.

Once again there is a lovely sense of freshness and tension suffusing the ripe aromas of plum, violet and dark raspberry that continues onto the rich, caressing and mouth coating flavors that possess unusually good power in the context of what is typical for Ruchots on the long, raspy and firm finale. This too is a wine to buy and forget but it has the potential to be splendid in time. Drink from 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru has a ripe and quite floral bouquet, mainly black fruit here, briary and a touch of peony. This has more finesse than the Chesaux. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, ripe opening. Good depth, yet backward compared to others, with just a touch of orange rind and brown spices on the finish. Harmonious from start to finish, give this 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2027-2048.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru offers brambly red fruit, tea leaves and light floral scents on the nose. I like the definition and focus here. 2014 Domaine Arlaud Morey Saint DenisBurgundy, FRANCE$115. 00Bottle$1380.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkCyprien Arlaud, who directs this domaine which owns 15 ha and farms a total of 18 ha, describes 2014 as a vintage that “finally had a good and even flowering that ultimately gave us pretty good yields and in any event the best since 2009. In fact I did a green harvest for the first time since 2004. The growing season was decidedly advanced and I thought that we might have an end of August beginning of September harvest, but the cooler and wet July and August conditions slowed the vegetative cycle. As to the topic of the vintage regarding the Suzukii problem we had almost zero trouble save for a parcel of young vines in Charmes-Chambertin where the berries had thinner skins. We chose to begin picking on the 16th of September and there was surprisingly little sorting necessary as the fruit was clean and ripe. Potential alcohols were in the 12 to 12.5% range and I chaptalized a few wines in order to have 12.5% as that is sufficient in my view. In terms of the vinifications I used a small amount of whole clusters in the 1ers and grands crus, which is to say between 20 and 30%. I really like the style of the wines and if the summer weather had been normal I am convinced that 2014 would have been a truly great vintage'

Reduction presently dominates the nose though there is good freshness and drive to the attractively textured middle weight flavors that possess solid depth and length on the mildly rustic finale. This should be approachable after only a few years of bottle age.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2014 Morey Saint Denis Villages, which is matured in used wood, was showing just a little reduction on the nose. 2022 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru Magnum (1500ml)Burgundy, FRANCE$8499. 00Bottle$101988.00 DozenClosure: CorkDomaine Armand Rousseau sets the bar for Gevrey-Chambertin and is by any measure one of the greatest domaines in Burgundy. Their holdings include parcels in six of the Gevrey grand cru vineyards, along with the largest slice of premier cru Clos St-Jacques. Of course, the big two of Chambertin and Chambertin Clos des Beze get much of the attention, quality has been on the rise in each of the remaining vineyards, and there's no dead weight among their enviable selection today.
Other Reviews....
A more restrained, and less oak-inflected, nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its array of airy red cherry, dark currant, just turned earth, the sauvage and a dazzling array of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the equally tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors is strikingly refined thanks to the dense but exceptionally fine-grained tannins shaping the superbly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is without question one of the stars of the 2022 vintage. Drink through 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of sweet raspberries and cherries mingling with notions of orange zest, incense and spices in a complex bouquet introduce Rousseau's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's concentrated, precise and penetrating. It's one of the least evolved wines in the cellar, but it's very fine-boned for such a warm vintage.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru conveys a sense of grandeur on the nose, leaning slightly more towards red than black fruit, very harmonious and complex, with pressed flower scents filtering through with aeration. It is difficult to drag your nose away from the glass. The medium-bodied palate has very finely sculpted tannins and great depth with a smoothly textured, lightly spiced finish that lingers very long in the mouth. Superb. Drink 2027-2065.

Neal Martin - VinousThe 2022 Chambertin is a monumental wine with supremely ripe black cherry, plum, and cassis fruit loaded with spice and floral notes. There is an immense depth of flavour and a superbly dense and compact texture. As the wine sits in the glass, it seems almost infinitely complex. This tightly wound wine is not as generous as the Clos de Bèze. The truth is that the Bèze is perhaps more immediately engaging, while the Chambertin has more substance and ultimate potential. However, both wines will probably outlive anyone tasting them today since they seem set to age for a century. Drink 2035-2100.

Unfurling in the glass with notes of raw cocoa, blackcurrants, sweet spices, vanilla pod and cedary oak, Rousseau's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with succulent acids and powdery structuring tannins, concluding with an expansive, lactone-inflected finish. It's deeper and richer than I perceived it to be when I tasted it 2018, but it's also surprisingly strongly marked by its time in barrel—especially since this cuvée sees no new oak. Drink 2026-2050.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers brambly red berry fruit on the nose, hints of crushed stone that percolate through with aeration. The 2016 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding with aeration to reveal a deep and brooding bouquet of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with notions of grilled meats, ceps, peonies and iodine. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a muscular chassis of ripe tannin that's cloaked in a core of vibrant and concentrated fruit, concluding with a long and thrillingly carnal finish. It will be fascinating to compare this with the qualitatively similar but stylistically very different 2015 vintage when both wines have 20 years on the clock. Drink 2030-2066.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2016 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is a little subdued on the nose with delineated red cherry, crushed strawberry and crushed stone aromas. Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)Here too there is just enough wood in evidence to mention on the gorgeously spiced and intricately layered aromas of essence of red currant, floral, plum, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru claims the place of king of the Rousseau cellar this year, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of ripe red berries, cherries and plums, complemented by nuances of blood orange, peonies, raw cocoa, grilled meats and spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, lively acids and a muscular chassis of ripe tannins that's largely concealed by a prodigious core of fruit. Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)As is often the case, this is more restrained than the Bèze and more deeply pitched as well with its cooler array of strikingly spicy red and dark currant aromas that are more heavily cut with freshly turned earth scents along with plenty of floral and sauvage influences, all of which is again trimmed in just enough oak influence to point out. The exceptionally rich, dense and highly energetic full-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and a pungent minerality on the brilliantly complex and explosively long finish. This is a classic example of power without weight because despite the imposing size of the '16 Chambertin, the overall impression is one of harmony and grace. Revisited from bottle, the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is showing beautifully, soaring from the glass with expressive aromas of sweet red berry fruit, smoked meats, coniferous forest floor, mandarin orange and peonies, framed by a deft application of cedary, spicy new oak. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its velvety attack segues into an ample core of succulent fruit, concluding with a long and resonant finish. This is likely to be both deceptively approachable young and notably long-lived, offering a broad drinking window. Drink 2025-2060.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is just a glorious success. Vivid red fruit, Morello cherries, wild strawberry and pressed violets on the nose, the aromatics here feel so animated and exquisitely defined. The palate is perfectly balanced with a killer line of acidity: crystalline red fruit, filigree tannins and more freshness than it knows what to do with. There is a sense of "channeled intensity" in this Chambertin and whilst there is no question that it is a 20- to 30-years wine, I felt no guilt in polishing this off in its youth. Tasted at Maison de Colombier in Beaune. Drink 2022-2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2021)If you're a fan of this grand cru bottling - and which Burgundy lover isn't? - there's a lot more to go around this year, with a record-equalling 46 barrels. The resulting wine doesn't have the concentration of 2015 or 2016, but it's still a spicy, focussed, refined wine with deftly integrated 100% new wood, tangy acidity and caressing tannins. Drink 2025-2032.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink through 2037+.

The 2017 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru bursts from the glass with extroverted aromas of dark, plummy fruits that mingle with notes of chocolate, licorice, sweet oak spice, grilled meats and espresso. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and ample with broad shoulders, a generous core of fruit and more mid-palate amplitude and tannic bite than the Chambertin.
92-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has quite a high-toned bouquet, a touch of boot polish coming through and then receding to reveal very complex floral aromas. The elegant palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, perfect acidity and fine proportion. Maybe it is missing a little weight on the back end, but it is still a refined Clos-de-Bèze that will age with grace. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2026-2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Sept 2021)Sumptuously oaked and always poured last in any tasting at Domaine Rousseau, this is riper and plusher than the straight Chambertin bottling, with the power and density to age well, framed by 100% new wood and showing a bloody, ferrous undertone. Drink 2027-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)While the wood treatment is certainly evident it remains reasonably subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its broad-ranging combination of exuberantly fresh aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, rose petal, violet, plum and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouthcoating, hugely long and firmly structured and chiseled finish. While the Chambertin appears to have a slight edge at this very early juncture due to having slightly better complexity, it's going to be interesting in 20 to 25 years' time to see which is the better wine! Wilder and more brooding, the 2017 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru offers up notes of wild berries, dark chocolate, peonies and rich forest floor. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and supple with fine-grained, chalky tannins and persuasive energy and length.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru has a beguiling, floral bouquet although, there is some reduction to contend with, that will be gone by the time of bottling. But one senses that this is more brooding. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, masculine and slightly ferrous, good density towards the finish, but this will require four or five years to really soften. Maybe the Charmes has more charm? This might be more intellectual however. Drink 2024-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)The most 'reliable' of the domaine's grands crus, according to Cyrielle Rousseau, this comes from a 55-year-old parcel and produces small berries (millerands) in the vineyard. The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru displays notes of sweet red and black berries, licorice, rich soil, grilled meat and citrus peel. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with more density and concentration than the Charmes-Chambertin, balanced by juicy acids. Though the tannins are supple, it will demand and reward bottle age. This is a cuvée that continues its upward trajectory chez Rousseau.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Clos de la Roches Grand Cru, which is tasted from two barrels since one is reduced, has a well defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, candied orange peel, hints of cassis and later, vanilla pod. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, slightly sorbet in character with hints of mulberry and fig towards the complex and quite persistent finish. One of the more cerebral Clos de la Roche releases from Domaine Rousseau. Drink 2022-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2018)Muscular' is how Cyrielle Rousseau describes her Clos de la Roche, made from two parcels - one high and one low - that total 1.48ha, with some parts over a century old. Having underrated Rousseau's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from barrel, then from bottle, I'm happy to have a chance to redeem myself, as this wine is showing brilliantly after just a few years in bottle. Bursting with aromas of red berries, cherries, peonies and spices, framed by sapid bass notes of smoked meats, it's medium to full-bodied, with more mid-palate depth and intensity than was apparent just a year ago, built around melting tannins and succulent acids. Drink 2021-2041.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sept 2021)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with red cherries, strawberry, orange blossom and hints of chai tea that develop with aeration. There is fine cohesion and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, lightly spiced and quite peppery for a Lavaux Saint-Jacques, building gradually in the mouth with quite a vibrant spicy, even a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Drink 2020-2036.

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is very promising, unwinding in the glass with aromas of exotic spices, grilled meats, cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and loamy soil. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it was the most introverted, tightly wound wine in the cellar on the day of my visit. Broad-shouldered and elegantly muscular, it's bright and precise, concluding with a penetrating finish.
96-98 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The reference standard in Chambertin. This is every bit the equal of the Clos de Bèze, if slightly less approachable young. Blended from four parcels including a cooler section near the southern end and another near the top of the slope, this gives a wine of incredible concentration if a bit reserved initially. Here, ripe berry fruit, a strong mineral/saline edge and a gamey note all emerge with time, and the texture is firm and tightly wound. This should age gracefully for the better part of a century. Drink 2029-2069.
99 points
Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Oct 2020)This too evidences subtle wood influence on the ripe yet cool nose that combines notes of spice, earth and floral elements with those of dark berries and poached plum. There is excellent intensity to the full-bodied, concentrated and mineral-inflected flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent depth and persistence on the beautifully balanced and imposingly powerful if decidedly compact finale. This strikingly pure effort is already Zen-like in its sense of harmony and should prove to be remarkably long-lived. Brilliant. Drink through 2041+.

Deeper-pitched and more carnal than the Chambertin, Rousseau's 2019 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru mingles aromas of cherries, cassis and raspberries with hints of Asian spices, incense, smoked tea, rich soil tones and grilled duck. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, it's bright and lively, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, succulent acids and powdery structuring tannins. Long and perfumed, this is a sensual Clos de Bèze in the making.
95-97 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Rousseau Clos de Bèze is a blend of three plots that total 1.42ha. Cyrielle believes the wine shows better in its youth than Chambertin. Both wines, however, are vinified in the same way: destemmed, long maceration, gentle extraction and ageing in new François Frères barrels. The result is sublime: charming in its youth, with accessible, ripe notes of red and black fruits, spice, mineral and game, plus a velvety, dense texture that is firm but not forbidding. This has the substance to last fifty years if cellared well. Drink 2029-2069.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Oct 2020)Equally subtle wood frames the even spicier if slightly riper nose that reflects a layered blend of red currant, violet, rose petal, earth and a whisper of exotic tea. The full-bodied if slightly less concentrated flavors also reflect an abundance of minerality on the firm, serious and equally well-balanced, youthfully austere and hugely long finale. I usually prefer one or the other [Chambertin] at this stage each year but in 2019, while the two wines are noticeably different, it's not clear which will ultimately be the more interesting. In sum, this is a choice but one where there is no wrong answer as this too is brilliant! Drink through 2041+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Produced from three parcels: two in the original Clos de la Roche vineyard and almost 1ha in Les Fremières. Aged in used casks like the producer's Charmes, this has a very different character, with dark, plummy fruit alongside an earthy note on the nose, and a texture that is less firm perhaps, but broader and more full-bodied. Very solid. Drink 2024-2059.

Aromas of sweet berry fruit, wild plums, baking chocolate, spices and candied citrus rind introduce Rousseau's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a medium-bodied, lively wine with a generous core of fruit, bright acids and powdery structuring tannins. Combining a certain sunny generosity with real vibrancy and precision, this appears to have the makings of Rousseau's finest communal bottling since 2012 or 2010, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it in bottle in a few years. As I've written before, the communal Gevrey includes fruit from premiers crus Perrières and Etournelles Saint-Jacques.
90-92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)This regular Gevrey village was produced in 2019 from a total of seven parcels, most of them to the north, according to Cyrielle Rousseau, as well as a bit of the Premier Cru Clos Prieur, producing what is among my favourite village-level Gevreys. It shows remarkable purity of red fruit and an expressive floral note on the nose, yet despite the tension and tannin on the palate, it is indeed a generous wine. Drink 2024-2059.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Oct 2020)A slightly more deeply pitched nose presents aromas of wild red and dark berries, underbrush, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru, which Cyrille described as her “heart wine,” has a superb bouquet with ebullient dark cherries, bergamot, blackberry and briary, wonderful delineation and demonstrating more exuberance than Mugneret-Gibourg (which as affected by frost, whereas Rousseau was not). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, shimmering red fruit, outstanding mineralité and a subtle crescendo toward the pixilated finish. Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)Good medium red. Pure, restrained aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then juicy and tighter in the middle, showing strong calcaire energy as the mother rock here isn't much more than a foot below the surface. This rich, firmly tannic wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring black fruits and violet. Impeccably balanced from the start, but this youthfully austere wine will need time in the cellar. The estate is slowly replanting this vineyard, so this 2016 is a mix of old and young vines.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Jan 2018)A highly appealing freshness to the elegant aromas of red and dark berries that are at once intensely earthy and spicy. In the same fashion, there is a lovely sense of verve and freshness to the markedly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate delineation on the sleek, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is really quite classy and has already developed impressive depth. While this clearly has the intrinsic stuffing to reward extended cellaring, 5-ish years or so should be sufficient in order to enjoy this beauty if youthful fruit is your preference.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was showing some reduction on the nose that was difficult to shake off, though there appears to be sufficient fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a more conservative Clos de Bèze in some ways, but it demonstrates impressive precision as it fans out with gusto towards the finish. Give this 5-6 years in bottle to address the reduction issue and then I believe this will turn into an exemplary Grand Cru. Tasted September 2016.

Neal Martin - Wine AdvocateGood dark red. More closed today than the Clos Saint-Jacques, showing a stronger oak presence to its reticent aromas of dark raspberry, strawberry and blood orange. Then hugely rich, opulent and pliant on the palate if still youthfully reserved. Completely different in shape from the Clos Saint-Jacques, conveying a strong impression of solidity and saline minerality. Finishes with big but ripe, thoroughly integrated tannins. This may not have quite the fruit intensity or verve of the 2014 but it still leaves the salivary glands humming.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousSubtle if not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for the mildly reduced nose so again do yourself a favor and decant this if you're going to crack one before 2020 or so. There is knock-out intensity to the gorgeously textured and mineral-inflected flavors that are imposingly scaled yet there is not even a hint of heaviness on the restrained, delineated and explosively long and mouth coating finale. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru from Armand Rousseau had a slight reduction on the nose but underneath lies some gorgeous and ripe redcurrant, strawberry and bay leaf aromas. Very complex, but you need to wait for the aromas to fully get into their stride. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine tannins. Neal Martin - Wine Advocate (Dec 2016)Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (March 2016)Once again subtle reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background so I recommended decanting it for those of you who can't wait at least 5 years to try a bottle. There is even more size, weight and intensity to the velvety, powerful and opulent big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of palate soaking dry extract that pushes the otherwise tightly coiled tannins to the background on the massively long coffee-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is very firmly structured but actually a bit less austere than it usually is and thanks to the abundant dry extract might be approachable a bit sooner than usual too. In short, this brilliant effort is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage.

An earthier and more somber nose reluctantly displays its aromas of purple fruit, especially plum. There is more volume to the rich, velvety and solidly concentrated flavors that are more powerful and less refined on the solidly persistent and slightly firmer finale. This is also worth considering. Drink through 20272+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundCropped at a measly 18hl/ha, the 2021 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with vibrant dark cherry, crushed strawberry and light vanillary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite "thick" tannins that lend this real weight and density; a burly Maranges in a positive sense, even if it does miss a bit of nuance on the finish. Cellar it for a couple of years. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousA good half crop made. The most concentrated of the reds in colour and in nose. A fine generosity of fruit. This is certainly good and almost qualifies as exciting! A touch of orange zest in with the fresh red fruit. Excellent energy. Drink from 2025-2030.

A whisper of the sauvage is present on the ripe and distinctly earthy aromas of mostly red and dark raspberry. The middle weight flavors are not quite as dense though they still possess fine volume and richness before concluding in a moderately rustic finish that isn't quite as structured. Drink from 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has an airy bouquet of dark berry fruit, pressed flowers and just a faint touch of graphite, perhaps one of the more understated aromatics from the domaine. The focused, harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine backbone and a silky-smooth texture, delivering plenty of tension and energy on the graphite-tinged finish. A superb Maranges that should drink well for 15–20 years. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousAnother hyper intense black purple colour, always very concentrated from their 90 year old vines, still in great condition. Black cherry stones. Plenty of tannins. I am not overpowered by the fruit though. It just needs much more time to come out of its shell. There is a huge mass of really bright fruit waiting within and a lovely clean pure finish.

Ripe aromas consist mostly of plum, dark cherry and earth where the latter is picked up by the vibrant and fresh middle weight flavors that possess a moderately rustic if lengthy finale that is sufficiently firm to suggest that this frank effort should reward at least a few years of cellaring. Drink 2024+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundRacked the week prior to my visit, the 2020 Bourgogne Rouge is a one-third blend of Hautes-Côtes, Puligny and Maranges-based parcels. It offers vivid red cherry and cranberry scents on the nose. The palate is quite crunchy in texture, in a positive way, and well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Touches of orange zest appear toward the finish. Very promising. Drink 2023-2029.

Neal Martin - Vinous20% whole bunch vinification has been used. Deep purple black, surprisingly little nose. Juicy pure red fruit, classic rather than hot vintage fruit in the mouth and impressively concentrated, firmer structure than in 2019. Really long finish. I am rather impressed by this.

2020 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Maranges La Fussiere Rouge Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A deft application of wood surrounds the notably ripe aromas of dark pinot fruit, cassis and cherry liqueur. The sleek, delicious and intense medium-bodied flavors possess very good volume as well as fine depth and persistence on the sneaky long, firm and balanced finish. This youthfully austere effort is also going to need at least a few years of patience first. Drink from 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which contains slightly less whole bunch than the Village, has a more austere, well-defined, stony bouquet featuring dark berry fruit and touches of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit and slightly granular in texture, leading to a cohesive, sustained finish. Very classy, and I reckon this should be quite approachable thanks to its pliancy. Drink 2024-2038.

Neal Martin - VinousOne third whole bunch, ie one of three tanks was 100%. The Bachelet boys have an additional hectare in Fussière from 2020, exceptionally well placed. Almost black in the centre. Black cherry, very powerful indeed with some firm tannins and still very good acidity. Sterner and weightier, not for the ethereal minded. The wine had not yet been adjusted for sulphur and a second sample was fresher, though along similar lines.

There is enough wood to comment on framing the riper aromas of both white and yellow fruit compote. I like the intensity of the well-detailed and nicely rich medium-bodied flavors that exhibit fine depth and persistence on the balanced finish. Drink 2024+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière opens in the glass with notes of peonies, cherries, wild berries and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and precise, with lively acids, fine tannins and a perfumed, mouthwateringly saline finish, it's a real success. This cuvée has grown, as the Bachelet brothers have acquired more parcels in this stony climat. Drink 2022 - 2040.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jul 2021)The 2019 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which contains around 30% whole bunches, has a well-defined nose with autumn leaves and tea leaf infusing the vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured opening, very fresh and brimming with tension, harmonious from start to finish with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the very sustained aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Neal Martin - VinousIf you don’t know or don’t rate Maranges, this wine is the wake-up call. The Bachelet-Monnot 2019 1er Cru La Fussière is really concentrated, with masterful intensity in all senses, but still with elegance. Perfectly ripe deep cherry-raspberry fruit with a long finish, fuller-bodied than ever in the past and without the trenchant acidity that used to be a feature sometimes.

An intensely earthy nose reveals notes of both red and dark berries along with a hint of forest floor. The lilting, delicious and nicely energetic flavors possess reasonably good richness along with acceptable persistence on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish where a hint of rusticity slowly emerges. Firm reduction currently dominates the nose though there is both good freshness and punch to the firm and rather rustic middle weight flavors that conclude in a somewhat awkward finish. This wasn't showing particularly well but the underlying material appears to be of quality and my range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2026+.

2021 Domaine Benoit Chevallier Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Boudots Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$520. 00Bottle$6240.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkBenoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.
Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

This is the only wine in the range to display any appreciable amount of wood though not so much as to impair the sense of purity to the liqueur-like red cherry aromas that evidence plenty of floral character and in particular rose petal. There is excellent concentration to the elegant and refined medium weight flavors that brim with minerality on the robust, intense and powerful finish. In a word, impressive.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
