It's easy to underestimate the impact the wines of Mount Etna have had over the last 10 years. The winery is owned by the widely acclaimed Marco De Grazia who is one of the winemakers responsible for bringing the wines of Etna to prominence on the world stage.
The red wines of Etna, produced from predominantly Nerello Mascalese, are often compared to a variety marrying the traits of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. Terre Nere take their wines a step further than most, and highlight the cru vineyards of the region with wines made at varying altitudes, along with vines planted on the pure Ellittico lava flow terroir. These delicate, perfumed, and intense wines translate the soil and season like few other wines in the world, and with demand far outweighing supply they are now increasingly hard to secure.

The brightness, lovely density and focus come through clearly here with an almost pinot sensibility and a long finish. It’s polished with fine tannins and a brilliant texture. Mostly grapes from San Lorenzo and Calderara Sottana vineyards. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Etna Rosso seduces with a burst of ripe cherries, cloves and sweet rose aromas. This is an energetic and wickedly fresh effort with a cascade of wild berry fruit and crunchy mineral tones that flow beneath an air of violet inner florals. A coating of fine tannins frames the finish without slowing its momentum as this tapers off with amazing length and a saturation of raspberry. The 2023 aims to please. Drink 2025-2029.

This is a special bottling for the 20th anniversary of the estate. It has depth and intensity with a medium to full body, a creamy stone and basalt texture, red fruits and a mushroom and bark undertone. The linear, vivid finish goes on and on. Needs time to open. Be patient.

Vivid and intense, a burst of autumnal spices, dusty rose, and blood orange gives way to dried strawberries as the 2022 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Bellacolonna blossoms in the glass. Simply stunning, it splashes across the palate with crunchy wild berry fruits and mineral tones, all motivated by a core of zesty acidity. It leaves a staining of primary concentration and silky tannins to linger through the violet-tinged finale as hints of confectionery spice fade slowly. The Bellacolonna is from a "young vine" selection planted in 2006 and 2007 within the Calderara Sottana cru. Drink: 2025-2030.

Owner and winemaker Andrea Franchetti acquired the property in the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s started planting his first vines. The most important lesson he gleaned from a stint in Bordeaux was the crucial role played by terroir. He saw, in the rough woodland that would become Trinoro, clay-limestone and gravel soils reminiscent of those in Saint-Émilion. Only select parcels were suitable for vine-growing, amid a sea of blue clay, and those he cleared by hand and planted in the style of the Bordelais: high-density, meter-by-meter plantings, with cuttings brought over from some of the region’s great estates. The flagship wine from Tenuta di Trinoro is 48% Cabernet Franc and 52% Merlot, fermented in steel followed by eight months in new barrique and 11 months in cement.

The 2016 Trinoro is one of the most extraordinary wines I have ever tasted from Trinoro and proprietor Andrea Franchetti. Deep and yet also silky, with exceptionally refined tannins and exquisite balance, the 2016 has so much to recommend it. Dark raspberry jam, white chocolate, mint and rose petal notes are all finely knit in this sublime, exquisitely beautiful wine. The finish alone boasts mind-bending intensity and persistence.

The 2016 Tenuta di Trinoro is a truly gorgeous creation. The flagship wine from Tenuta di Trinoro is 48% Cabernet Franc and 52% Merlot (fermented in steel like the other top-shelf wines from this estate, followed by eight months in new barrique and 11 months in cement). The alcohol here clocks in at 15.5%, and you do feel it. This powerful Tuscan blend offers nice, ripe intensity and bold movements. It is rich and beautiful, layering out tranches of fruit, cinnamon and spice in perfect harmony. It is a full-bodied wine with some sweet cinnamon spice on the close. Some 6,000 bottles were made. Drink 2020 - 2040.

The 2018 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a rich, heady Saint-Émilion. Ripe, flamboyant and creamy, the 2018 captures all of the opulence of the vintage. Black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and tobacco gradually open in the glass, but the 2018 is a dense, plush wine that needs time to show all it has to offer. The bouquet displays a bit of reduction, so opening the wine in advance and possibly decanting, are advisable. As always, François Mitjavile crafts one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. Drink 2026-2043.

The Le Pin of Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Château Tertre Roteboeuf is another exotic, sexy, singular wine from the Mitjavile family, whose vineyard is ideally situated on the eastern side of Saint Emilion. The 2018 isn't far off the style of the 2016 yet is perhaps even more exotic and up-front, offering a wild nose of white chocolate, black cherries, green tobacco, bacon fat, exotic flowers, and vanilla bean. Brilliantly concentrated on the palate, it has silky, polished tannins, a rather muscular, structured style, thick aromas and flavors, and a great finish. This is another genius effort from François Mitjavile that's in the same league as the 2005, 2010, and 2016. There's nothing else out there that comes close to resembling the wines from this estate! It needs 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 years or more. Drink 2026-2056.

The Prisoner is one of Napa Valleys most recognised red blends produced from Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono grapes. Aging takes place in a combination of French and American oak barrels of which 30% are new.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. A mix of black plum, liquorice and cassis scents fill the nostrils followed by some toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, full and plump the opulently textured palate features dark plum and cassis fruit over prominent toasty vanillin oak, dark chocolate and spicy cinnamon characters. Evoking a pure, delicate and gourmand bouquet of violet, mulberries and dark berries, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and firm with a crystalline, pure texture and an energetic, tense mid-palate framed by somewhat stringy tannins, typical of whole bunches. Then comes the breathtaking finish that is as graceful as a great dancer who leaps effortlessly from one side of the stage to the other. Coming largely from the granite, south-facing soils of the Reynard lieu-dit and aged in used barrels, the 2022 Cornas Reynard reveals a beautiful array of red, blue, and black fruits, violets, spice, pepper, and orange zest. The class and purity here are something else, and it's medium to full-bodied, focused, and beautifully balanced, with fine tannins and remarkable elegance. This is a sensational Cornas in the making.

The 2020 Cornas Chaillot comes from a mix of lieux-dits (it's mostly Chaillot) as well as some younger vines. It's an incredible wine in its own right and certainly doesn't give much in terms quality to its big brother. Awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, violets, crushed stone, and bouquet garni-like notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and ultra-fine tannins. It's a touch more finesse-driven and elegant compared to the Reynard and should round into form with just 5-7 years of bottle age. This is legit awesome Cornas that will have 20-25 years of ultimate longevity. Drink 2029-2045.

There is fine density to the medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the firm, serious and built-to-age finale. This will need to add depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range, but the potential appears to be present. Worth checking out. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru was the first vineyard harvested and even so, I feel this is the one cuvée with suggestions of slight sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied pliant tannins, quite sweet and candied, fleshy with wild strawberry, raspberry and white pepper towards the finish. Fine, but I think Matrot’s Maranges La Fussière is better. Drink 2025-2045.

An ultra-fresh, cool and elegant mix of mostly ripe red berries is nuanced by a plethora of floral elements along with hints of anise and jasmine tea. I very much like the texture of the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that are suave but nicely delineated on the dusty and chalky finish that displays excellent persistence. This is really very good and the impression of refinement is aided by the dense but fine-grained tannins. One to consider. Drink through 2030+.

A priori, afford this 3-5 years in bottle before broaching. Drink 2025-2040.

Once known only to a dedicated group of Burgundy devotees due to their reputation selling much of the production to noted perfectionists Dominique Laurent and Lalou Bize-Leroy, Domaine Thierry Glantenay now enjoys no such anonymity. Formally trained as an engineer, Thierry brings those methodical and exacting skills to his winemaking, crafting ethereal Volnay and powerful Pommard that display fantastic transparency of each specific terroir. Blessed with small parcels in the best vineyards of Volnay and Pommard, Thierry has set about a gradual process of refining and perfecting how his vines are managed, and guiding the wines through vinification with a delicate touch.

The nose is delineated and focused with blackberry, bilberry and light oyster shell scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. Plenty of freshness here, quite citric in style, with white pepper and clove towards the finish. Good persistence and freshness. This should mature with class. Drink 2026-2046.

There’s a liberal sprinkling of black pepper here, the stem addition perhaps the most tangible amongst the cuvées yet commensurate with the fruit concentration. The stems are quite potent on the nose, very floral - wilted roses in an antique vase, crushed stone and a touch of truffle oil. The palate is medium-bodied with brittle tannins. Quite saline, which gets the saliva flowing. This is perhaps the most powerful wine on the finish, with a long, spicy aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2026-2048.

Fresh and vibrant, yet there is a gracefulness here that I haven't seen in recent vintages. Tender on the finish yet with no shortchanging of fruit. Excellent. Drink 2026-2046.

The latest rendition of a cuvée that goes from strength to strength, Glantenay's old vine 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Saussilles offers up notions of Griotte cherries, cassis, potpourri and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, racy and concentrated, with superb depth at the core and a saline finish, it's well worth seeking out. As I've written before, this climat takes its name from the Combe Saussilles, a shallow ravine that divides the communes of Beaune and Pommard—and, importantly, an air drainage for cool breezes from the Hautes-Côtes.

A juicy Gamay with fresh acidity and a savoury finish that shows some spice.
The Coteaux Bourguignons A.O.C. was created in 2011 and borders on the entire Burgundy region, from Chablis to the gates of Lyon. Red, white and rosé wines and can be either made of a blend or a single grape variety. Trénel’s Coteaux Bourguignons is produced from Gamay with vines aged between 40-60 years located near Villefranche and le Bois d'Oingt on the characteristic limestone soils of South Beaujolais.
Dark red black tinged colour with a red purple tinged hue. Fragrant aromas of violet, morello cherry and incense mix with hints of earth, herbs du Provence and spice. A very earthy Bordeaux with dry, chalky tannins and a tertiary focused conclusion.
Midnight black dark red core with a very dark red hue. Nosing offers up aromas of blackcurrant, black olive and cigar box followed by some earth and subtle spicy leather notes. Mid weighted, the palate is very earthy with some blackcurrant, cigar box, leather and spice elements also evident. Dry, chalky tannins impart some grip onto what is an elegant, tertiary focused conclusion.

Drying, slightly chalky tannins with a mid length conclusion dominated by tertiary elements.

Certified organic with maturation taking place in 1-4 year old French medium toast barriques for a period of 9 months. Deep dark red black tinged core with a bright dark purple hue. Red to dark cherry aromas infused with graphite escape the glass followed by some stalk, dried meat and spice notes. Light in body the palate features a mix of red to dark cherry and anise flavours over earthy graphite, dried herb and spicy clove nuances. Tight, grainy tannins and fresh acidity with a savoury mid length finish.

Light, supple entry finishing long and savoury.
Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a semi translucent red hue. Escaping the glass are aromas of rhubarb, red cherry and anise which intermingle with hints of clove, bramble, earth and spice. Light and supple upon entry, spicy rhubarb, red cherry and strawberry fruits meld into a brambly back drop of earth and dried herbs. Fine grained tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long and savoury.

The Uccelliera 2017 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job showcasing that extra power and brawn of the vintage and the richer textural structure of the southern side of the appellation. The bouquet is up front and beautifully measured with lots of red and purple fruit definition followed by spice, tar and earthiness. What sets this wine apart in this hot and dry vintage is the mouthfeel. It delivers fiber, flesh and soft tannins. The alcohol is a bit much at 15% in this production of 28,666 bottles. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Balsam herbs, cocoa and sweet white smoke give way to crushed black cherry and plum as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is elegance personified, silky, deep and round, yet delivering a core of saline-minerality that creates a savory sensation – umami, in a way – with masses of ripe red fruits and confectionary spices to contrast. The tannins are sweet and round, presenting a chiseled structure; yet it’s not forceful. This tapers off with a tart twang of sour wild berries under an air of lavender and violets. Wow; there is so much concentration and depth here, but also balance. In fact, there’s hardly a sign of this being from a difficult vintage. While I expect it will have a shorter life than an Uccelliera Brunello from a classic year, the 2017 should not be missed. Drink 2024 - 2029.

Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Dark currant and cherry aromas show good elevation out of the glass trailed by hints of liquorice, earth, tobacco and spicy dried herbs. Rich blackcurrant and dark cherry fruits meld into an earthy back drop of old cedar, dried herbs, tobacco and leather. Firm, slightly grippy tannin structure and bright acidity finishing with a rustic earthiness.

The obsession in 2019 was to avoid excess ripeness and to keep the freshness, so they did a softer vinification, used larger vats for the élevage and used less American wood. The 2019 Valbuena was produced with a blend of Tinto Fino with 3% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 4.6 grams of acidity. I love the nose; it is perfumed and subtle. And the wine is beautifully textured; the tannins are very fine, silky even, quite different from the tannins from the other 2019s from the group that I tasted next to this, Macán and Pintia. A triumph over the conditions of the year, it's a more elegant Valbuena than I anticipated. 190,490 bottles, 5,581 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2022. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2019 Valbuena 5º is primarily Tempranillo with a 3% dash of Merlot from the Vega Sicilia Estate and was aged for up to two years, one in foudres and the other in different kinds of oak barrels. Garnet-red with a faint bluish-purple sheen. The aromas feature cedar and vanilla accompanied by plum, sour cherry and subtle pine hints. The dry and velvety palate shows a faintly chalky texture and supple tannins that create an unctuous but taut character. The energetic red is wrapped in a gently plush blanket. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2018 Pintia comes from a cooler and wetter vintage when the grapes were picked between September 20th and October 7th, and it fermented in their new fermentation room where they feel they can be more precise. The wine still has 15% alcohol, with a pH of 3.82 and 4.6 grams of acidity. It had a shorter élevage this year and matured for 10 months in French and 18% American oak barrels, 81% of them new. The nose is very expressive, with bright cherry fruit, and the wine is fresher than the norm in the region, with integrated alcohol and oak, reflecting a very cool year, floral and perfumed. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals very fine and elegant tannins. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Pintia. 251,512 bottles, 14,144 half-bottles, 6,543 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in April 2020. Drink 2023 - 2029.

Brooding but fresh nose, with tarry blackberries and fresh blue fruit. Iron, wet stones, violets and a hint of mocha, too. Full-bodied, mineral and broad on the palate with a stony feel, though not heavy at all. A really elegant, nuanced and extremely poised Pintia that you can enjoy now and for the next decade. A really eclectic Pintia showing more elegance and calculation. Drink or hold.
