Reduction dominates the fruit today. There is a bit more volume and richness with more evident minerality to the medium weight, fleshy and caressing flavors that culminate in a highly refreshing and balanced finish. This is a really lovely combination of power and refinement that should age beautifully. Drink 2029+.

There are three barrels of the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a pretty wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of red berries, dried flowers and rock salt, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and pure, with tangy acids, chalky tannins and good length on the finish. It's an ethereal, delicate Caillerets this year.

The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a terse, mineral-scented bouquet that is easily the most complex of the four Volnays from Boillot. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp black fruit laced with orange peel, bay leaf and clove. I like the focus and density here. A very fine, complex Volnay that should age with style. Drink 2020 - 2038.

High up, on the rock with almost no topsoil, so this vineyard was picked very early along with Les Angles. Fine dense purple and a certain sense of nobility. Gorgeous weight of fruit here, just on the red side of black, mouth-filling especially at the back, good thread of acidity woven in, fine long finish. I get no feeling that this been picked too early.

By contrast the rich and naturally sweet medium weight flavors possess good if not distinguished density as well as fine length on the mildly rustic and austere finish. This refreshing effort is also quite firmly structured and will need at least a few years of cellaring. Drink 2029+.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with good depth and dimension, juicy acids and a pleasing sense of completeness.

I just want more terroir to come through once in bottle. Drink 2020 - 2030.

Pure vibrant red purple. The nose is refined rather than restrained, and a gorgeous fresh yet ripe red fruit suffuses the palate. A natural elegance to this wine, building towards the more typical Pommard structure at the back – but the fruit transcends. It’s the backbone which does it. Only three barrels unfortunately.

A decidedly sauvage-inflected nose is once again quite restrained and this requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax the aromas of violet, wild berries and plenty of earth character to reveal themselves. There is solid volume, power and evident muscle to the larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the impressively long finale. This isn't as refined as the Estournelles St. Jacques but it a good deal more powerful. Drink from 2032+.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers (Domaine Louis Jadot) is rich and muscular, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis, orange oil, warm spices, woodsmoke and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with tangy acids and a penetrating finish, it's a fine success.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands. A wine with huge potential is the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot). Unwinding in the glass with notes of raspberries, red cherries, vanilla pod, exotic spices and raw cocoa, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an immensely concentrated core, powdery tannins and a tightly wound profile. This will be among the slowest to evolve of all the wines in the cellar, and also among the most long-lived.

The 0.27ha Jadot parcel (owned by the house itself) is in a strip that goes from the top of the vineyard to the bottom, and thus includes both terres blanches (white marl) and terres rouges (red clay). The fruit character is black plum and cassis, with a firm, mineral and earthy element. Drink 2025 - 2040.

The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.
The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. ‘La Justice’ cuvée – named after its climat that Alexandrine bought in 2010 – produced its first vintage as recently as 2011. La Justice is located in the northeast part of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard.

An interesting and equally fresh and ripe nose combines notes of black fruit coulis, kirsch, violet and a floral whiff. The delicious, vibrant and more refined medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the slightly more complex and sneaky long finale. This too offers very fine quality for its level. Drink from 2026+.

It requires a doubly long selection process and twice as many locations to create this cuvée with Grand Cru complexity, sans the Grand Cru price tag.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine derives, as usual, from vines within Roy's six favorite parcels that produce tiny, shot berries. Unwinding to reveal aromas of sweet berries, orange rind, peonies and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and perfumed, with ultra-fine tannins, lively acids and a deep, seamless profile. While it's approachable young in this charming vintage, it has more than enough substance to age. Drink 2021 - 2039.

Although the vines for this Fremiets are very close to those for the Clos des Angles bottling, the style is very different – it is much more mineral, almost salty, with bright black fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a texture with abundant tannic grip and an almost chewy feel. The domaine farms nearly 1.6 hectares on the steeper slopes with shallow soils. Although it is not as reserved as the Clos des Ducs, this would benefit from five years of age before opening. A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. Drink 2028-2048.

This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru certainly has the most opulent bouquet amongst d’Angerville’s ‘20s with exuberant black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of fresh fig and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with quasi-chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline and poised with a harmonious finish not dissimilar to the Taillepieds. Satisfying persistence here, but in keeping with d'Angerville's other Volnays, it is quite serious in personality and this will oblige cellaring. Quite regal. Drink 2026-2046.

This is ripe and smoky up front, with a black cherry and mulberry fruit aromas and mineral and earth notes. The texture of the wine is dense and firm but enlivened by the fresh acidity of the 2021 vintage that carries it to a marvelous, lingering finish. The grapes come from Méo’s 0.72-hectare parcel planted in the 1930s. The grapes are destemmed and fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (half new). This will show well sooner than the grand crus but should also have the substance to age for several decades. Wonderful wine. Drink 2030 - 2060.

This wine is surprisingly accessible, with a charming, bright pomegranate and ripe cherry fruit, and rose petal, pepper and mineral notes. The texture is silky and fresh – it lacks the imposing density of some years (like 2020), but it is beautiful nonetheless. Méo has 2.75 hectares, second only to Château de la Tour, and the parcels are very well placed in La Garenne (which he calls Pres du Château), Les Chioures, and Grand Maupertuis. The 2021 vintage is a blend of all of the parcels. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Juicy fruits with ripe, slightly chewy tannins, bright acidity and a fleshy spiced dried herb laced finish of ample length.
From 60+ year old vines located just across the valley to the north of the winery not far from the famous windmill of Moulin a Vent. The vines here are east facing in granite soil and Moulin a Vent has a high presence of manganese which gives the wine its Moulin a Vent identity. This vineyard is slightly lower on the slope than his holding right in the centre of La Roilette (which sits adjacent to Moulin a Vent and which historically was considered part of Moulin a Vent), and close to the family winery less than 1km away. Always among the richest and deepest of wines with more structure and ageing capacity this cuvee is particularly successful in 2023 with the tannic structure of the wine well covered by the ripeness and fleshy generosity of the vintage. The harvest is all by hand with selection and sorting in the vineyard and winery. Maceration is carried out on 100% whole bunch fermenting semi-carbonic with indigenous yeasts lasting between 15 and 20 days on skins. The grapes are pressed then settled with fermentation continuing for 8 to 10 days, at 18 degrees to trigger the malolactic process. Aging lasts 18 months: 50% in 5-year-old oak barrels and 50% in vats.
Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Aromas of ripe strawberry and morello cherry infused with dried herbs mix with some earthy incense and spice like notes. Juicy morello cherry and strawberry fruits are interwoven with earthy dried herb and spicy incense like elements. Ripe, slightly chewy tannins with bright acidity and a fleshy spiced dried herb laced finish of ample length.

Incredible depth for a pinot that’s so expressive yet delicate. There is mineral depth to the aromas of red berries, dark fruit, bergamot, dried roses, stones, wet forest floor and sweet spices. The tension on the palate creates fullness, but without any heaviness in the middle. Rather ethereal, well structured and super long, lasting over a minute. One for the cellar. Already great now, but this will be stunning in three to five years.

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is another gorgeous wine from this family estate. As always it comes from three Grenache parcels: la Serres, La Crau and La Guigasse (there are 2 hectares in each parcel). In both 2015 and 2016 this cuvée wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in tank, with 15-20% in demi-muids. The 2016 spent a huge 45 days on skins before being pressed to barrel. This beauty offers the fine, finesse-driven style of the vintage, yet has full-bodied depth and richness as well as sensational notes of framboise, crushed flowers, licorice, Christmas fruitcake and spice. It’s in the top handful of wines in the vintage and will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20+ years of overall longevity.

The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres raises the quality bar higher, offering scents of cedar, dried spices and black cherries. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Serine (Syrah), aged in new barrels, it's full-bodied, rich and plush in feel, finishing long and velvety. I've said this before, but it bears repeating—I'm not usually a fan of maturing Grenache in small-format new oak vessels, but it seems to work in this case, resulting in a wine that's somehow dessert-rich, yet savory and not overbearing, with a soft, almost pillowy impression on the palate. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Pure, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it has building yet perfectly ripe tannins, the vintage’s more elegant, streamlined style, and a great finish. Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.
Les Suchots is the largest premier cru in Vosne-Romanee, situated between the grand crus of Echezeaux on one side, and Romanee-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg on the other. Soils here are richer than the other premier cru plots further up the slope, and produces wines with excellent perfume and character.

Along with Rugiens, Les Grands Epenots is considered the best Premier Cru in Pommard and the soil here is slightly richer than Petits Epenots, with high levels of iron. Average vine age in these plots is over 50 years old, and the wine is fermented with 100% whole cluster before aging in barrel (30% new) for 12 months plus four months in stainless steel.

La Colombière is a hamlet situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée. This vineyard is positioned just east of the village area that borders the Grand Cru vineyard Romanée St-Vivant. The soil in La Colombière resembles the clay and limestone found in other village-level vineyards to the east of the town, like Clos du Château, but it contains significantly fewer rocks.

Sweet red cherry, sage, rose petal, blood orange and lavender give this beguiling, layered Pinot tons of complexity. Savory, wild and constantly changing in the glass, the Rinconada has so much to offer. This brilliant, captivating Pinot from Racines has so much to offer. Drink: 2024-2039.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is a powerful, brooding wine. The high percentage of stems (75%) undoubtedly adds savory intensity, but it also masks some site character. The 2019 is a gorgeous wine, but it is also austere and not an especially typical expression of this site. I hope to have a chance to taste it in a decade. Drink: 2024-2039.

It's still impressively dark and rich, with scents of black olives, violets, raspberries and a touch of orange zest. Medium to full-bodied and velvety in feel, it looks like a strong year for the estate's blended wine. Drink: 2023-2032.

Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry, olive and pungent flowers are sharpened by a suggestion of black pepper. Supple and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated black raspberry, cherry-cola and violet pastille flavors and a suggestion of star anise. Finishes pliant, sweet and focused on the penetrating finish, showing smooth tannins and excellent tenacity. Drink: 2025-2033.

The base Côte Rôtie from Rostaing seems to always deliver, and the 2020 Côte Rôtie Ampodium might be the best yet. Deep purple-hued, with a brilliant nose of black raspberries, spring flowers, camphor, scorched earth, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, lush mouthfeel, and building tannins. I've always thought the 2010 was the greatest vintage for this cuvée, but this is going to give it a run for its money.

Marked by vibrant, intense notes of purple raspberries and violets, this is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with wonderfully fine tannins and a nearly never-ending finish. While La Viallière is not my favorite lieu-dit, this is truly special. Drink 2025-2040.

From a great terroir in the northern part of Côte Rôtie, the 2020 Côte Rôtie Le Viallière is another perfumed, mineral-laced 2020, offering a beautiful nose of darker raspberries, camphor, violets, woodsmoke, and grilled bread. Possessing huge minerality, it's medium to full-bodied, has a tight, compact mouthfeel, lots of tannins, and a great finish. It needs to be hidden in the back of the cellar for 7-8 years if possible. Drink after 2030.

That said, these are some of the most accomplished wines of Burgundy, and best of all continually produce wines that seemingly ignore any challenges a vintage might throw their way to achieve results seen only at very few of the finest addresses across the Cote.
Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.
Les Vaucrains is located further up the slope from Les Saint-Georges and Les Cailles, and completes the trio of standout vineyards in Nuit-Saint-Georges. It's also the most powerful and concentrated wine in the range, and is shown after Les Saint-Georges when tasting at the Domaine. Chevillon's plot is on the lower portion of the vineyard, granting is some more depth of fruit than some other producers of Les Vaucrains.

A slightly more deeply pitched nose combines notes of spice, red and dark currant, plum and plenty of humus-inflected forest floor character. The sleek and almost painfully intense larger-bodied flavors possess exquisite detail as well as focused power that really builds as the solidly complex and lingering finish sits on the palate. As one would expect in the 2021 vintage, this doesn't have its usual volume, but the balance is impeccable. Highly recommended. Drink through 2036+.

The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains unwinds to reveal aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of baking chocolate, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's a powerful, structured wine that's broader-shouldered than the more suave, elegant Cailles and Les Saint-Georges, but which is also exceptionally characterful.

As is often the case chez Chevillon, this is the most elegant wine in the range with its spicy, ultra-fresh and restrained nose that mixes both red and dark pinot fruit, violet and sandalwood. The equally restrained, cool and intense middleweight flavors are notably finer with superb detail and ample minerality on the moderately austere, balanced and strikingly lengthy finish that is shaped by fine-grained tannins. This is at once stylish and very classy. Drink through 2033+.

The slope in Les Pruliers is moderate though steep towards the top of the vineyard. Despite the slope there is still a good proportion of gravel here, and can lead to wines with generous fruit weight and presence. Chevillon produces a deep and firm example of Les Pruliers that can often rival Les Vaucrains for the most powerful wine in the portfolio.

A darker fruit profile presents notes of plum, dark currant and plenty of earth and game wisps. There is both fine power and richness to the big-bodied if less refined flavors that display fine length on the robust and moderately rustic finale. This isn't as dense as it usually is but even so, there is no lack of size and weight. Patience again suggested as this is definitely built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Scents of red berries, dark chocolate, orange zest, sweet spices and loamy soil preface the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's built around sweet, powdery tannins, and which concludes with a mouthwatering finish. The Pruliers often needs a lot of time, but this 2021 looks set to be unusually approachable, even if it also has the substance and structure to age.

As a synonym for quarry, it's no surprise to hear Les Perrieres sits above a working limestone marble quarry. A mid-slope site, Perrieres produces a fine and aromatic Burgundy, deep in colour yet light and silky on the palate.

Soils in Les Chaignots are more alluvial than in other areas of the village, with more chalk and gravel and very little clay. The site has a gentle slope with good drainage, and the vines here grow deep to access water and nutrients. Located at the northern end of Nuits, wines from Les Chaignots display intense floral aromatics with fruity nuances and great concentration.

As is usually the case, the expressive nose is quite spicy, indeed blind this could aromatically pass for a Vosne with its pretty plum, dark berry and exotic tea scents. The rich and quite generous yet refined and pure medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. Lovely and understated. Drink through 2029+.

Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.
Les Roncieres is a steep vineyard with poor, pale soils covered with white stones and gravelly shale. The early-ripening site produces wines which can show a slight wild edge to them, bramble fruit with a linear structure; quintessential Nuits-Saint-Georges.

An exuberantly fresh nose freely offers up a combination of various dark berries, newly turned earth and plenty of sauvage character. The rich, generous and punchy flavors possess a bit more volume on the tightly wound and impressively long finish. This overtly mineral-driven effort is a combination of refinement and focused power.
