2015 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.
What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.
Other Reviews....
Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. Drink 2025 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2018)The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drink 2023-2045.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Sept 2018)Vibrant purple, still so youthful. There is an absolute explosion of rich dark cherry fruit, with 10% whole bunches included, which adds an extra tension. Really good acidity, despite the wealth of concentrated youthful fruit, great intensity behind. Tasted: October 2018

An all but invisible whiff of wood easily allows the earthy yet quite pretty and cool aromas of plum, violet, dark cherry and soft spice nuances to shine. The mouthfeel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors is also admirably sleek while delivering excellent length on the mouthcoating and well-balanced if presently linear finish. While I wouldn't describe the 2016 Clos as racy, there is good energy and outstanding power as the low yields really show. This is superb though definitely a wine that will benefit from extended keeping. Drink through 2036+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015. Drink 2020 - 2040.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate (Dec 2017)(I tasted the younger- and older-vine components of this wine, followed by the press wine and an approximation of the final blend, which will be bottled with about 13.5% alcohol): Sample from the younger vines (45% of the blend; vinified with 15% whole clusters): Good dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of red cherry and licorice. Surprisingly dry and backward, with its cherry fruit complicated by pungent licorice and herb notes. Finishes rather suave if a bit tart, with lingering notes of bitter cherry and herbs. Sample from the old vines (45% of the blend; from vines 67 to 93 years of age): Bright, dark red. Distinctly darker and riper on the nose than the younger vines, offering aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and spices. A step up in volume as well, with its dark raspberry and licorice flavors complicated by a licorice note. Very firmly structured wine with a longer, more tactile finish. From the press wine (to comprise about 10% of the blend): Softer, fatter and slightly saline. Finishes a bit tart but this juice should fill in the middle of the blend. An approximation of the final blend: Healthy dark red. Slight medicinal cast to the aromas of cherry, redcurrant and menthol. By far the best and most complete of these samples, offering serious low-yield richness but also terrific definition and energy. This sample somehow displayed captivating violet and mineral notes that were not apparent in any of its components. Lovely depth and restrained sweetness here. Finishes taut and long, with saline and herbal nuances and terrific underlying structure. This reminded me of a 2010; interestingly, last year Zinetti described his young '15 as like a denser version of 2010.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Nov 2017)A balanced dense red purple colour. The nose shows a wealth of fruit, intense yet with a certain elegance. Clear pure and concentrated, this is very fine. 2022 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$2199. 00Bottle$26388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther reviews....
This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.
94-97 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is very attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, blood orange, rose petals and vine smoke. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's layered and fleshy, with a deep and seamless core of fruit that conceals powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a broad, perfumed finish. If this fulfills all its promise in bottle, it may make my score look conservative.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)As mentioned in the introduction, there are seven separate parcellaire cuvées of Musigny which will be blended. We tried four of them, representing different sectors. Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out. Drink from 2035-2050.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. 2017 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1299. 00Bottle$15588.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic. Drink from 2032+.
93 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, cassis, dark chocolate, peony and caramelized orange rind, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and elegantly fine boned, with chalky structuring tannins, a pure core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.
92-94+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2019)The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. Drink 2024-2048.

Neal Martin - VinousThe de Vogüé Bonnes Mares comes from a sizeable 2.7ha on red clay soils and is always the most structured and ‘masculine’ of the domaine's wines. A ripe but cool and restrained nose features relatively elegant violet and rose petal aromas as well as those of earthy red cherry liqueur and spice nuances. Allen Meadows - BurghoundHealthy dark red with ruby tones. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a violet topnote. Tight and minty on entry, then a bit more pliant in the middle, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its dark flavors of black cherry, spices and minerals. Finishes with substantial tooth- and tongue-dusting tannins. This wine also had a late malo and comes off as very backward today, in need of more élevage to gain in flesh and sweetness.

The 2022 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has an open and expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor scents, with a hint of morels in the background. The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is the most reticent on the nose, painfully shy despite coaxing from its shell. Touches of cold stone and a light estuarine tang. The medium-bodied palate has quite fine tannins, very pure and tensile, sporting dark cherries mixed with Indian spices and pain d'epices. There’s fine length, though the Clos de la Roche has a notch more flair. Drink 2029-2060.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousA bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.
95-97 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA completely different nose offers up much spicier aromas of red currant, exotic tea and a similar hint of violet. There is excellent vibrancy to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that don't have the power of the Clos de la Roche but do offer slightly better depth and precision on the lingering finale that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the gorgeously well-balanced finale. This is a stunner of a CSD. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak with 20% whole bunches, has an entrancing, beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, becoming ever more floral in the glass: rose bush and iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with orange sorbet and allspice, building confidence towards its ripe and quite spicy finish. With fine persistence on the aftertaste, this represents a very impressive Clos de la Roche. Drink 2029-2060.
95-97 points
Neal Martin - VinousA glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyDiscreet but not imperceptible wood sets off distinctly earthy aromas of plum, red currant, spice and a whisper of violet. There is both good volume and a lovely sense of purity to the caressing yet quite powerful middleweight plus flavors that exude evident minerality on the hugely long, balanced and mildly austere finale. This is terrific and highly recommended. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more generous and expressive bouquet than the Clos de Vougeot: black cherries and wild strawberries, just a bit of reduction to wade through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid, quite structured entry. Grippy in the mouth, a solid Mazoyères-like Charmes with a dash of peppercorns on the finish. Solid and a bit unyielding at the moment; this is one to cellar for several years before broaching. Drink 2030-2058.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. This is going to be a beautiful bottle in due course, with a lovely, fine, summer pudding aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038.
94-97 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis is also aromatically quite pretty and fresh with its lightly spiced combination of red berries, floral and earth-scented nose. The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 30% new oak and 25% whole bunches, seems to lack cohesion on the nose at the moment, missing some presence. The palate is medium-bodied with more depth and fruit intensity. It is not a complex Chambolle and a bit austere on the finish, but the whole bunches lend a little grip and spice on the finish. It should give several years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2026-2034.
86-88 points
Neal Martin - VinousThere was enough to make two cuves which will be blended together. A fine and even mid purple, with a gently charm to the nose, this is not too forceful though it certainly has plenty of energy on the palate. The barrel adds grip to the persistent finish. Drink from 2027-2033.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyHere the expressive nose is both more elegant and more floral-inflected on the spicy red cherry and plum scents. Ripe and attractively fresh aromas include those of black cherry coulis, spice and violet. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.) Drink 2025-2038.

Neal Martin - VinousBlack with a bit of purple. The bouquet offers a similar style of ultra lush raspberry that we saw in the Bourgogne. An explosion of fruit, with density, some firm structure behind, not too much acidity but all a cohesive unit with enough fruit to cover the 13.8% alcohol. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. This also appears to offer very fine quality in a built-to-age package. Drink from 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. Drink 2026-2048.

Neal Martin - VinousA vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.

A fresh and unusually expressive nose features notes of red and dark cherry, white pepper and a hint of kirsch. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 27, 2024)The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier was picked from September 7 to 30 and contains 13% alcohol. This is quintessential "DdC" on the nose: black fruit, sous-bois and hints of black olive at first, subtle marine notes emerging with time in the glass. There’s wonderful focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pencil-shaving-tinged black fruit on the entry. Perhaps a bit grippier with more spine than one would expect (especially following the more sensual 2022), this is very traditional in style, with a tremendously long and satisfying saline finish. Superb. Drink 2029-2060.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe 2023 Domaine de Chevalier is beautifully resonant in the glass. Deep, layered and quite persistent, the 2023 has so much to offer. In many vintages, this red needs time to be at its best, but this edition has enough forward fruit to make me think it will drink well with minimal cellaring, even if the acids remain brisk. Graphite, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and rose petal build into the tense, saline-infused finish. The 2023 is all finesse. Drink 2030-2063.

The purity of ripe fruit is impressive with cabernet really showing through. 63% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc.

James SucklingCassis, spring flowers, graphite, black cherries, and some smoky nuances all emerge from the 2023 Domaine De Chevalier, another medium to full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly impressive Pessac that has ripe tannins and a great finish. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and it's aging in one-third new oak, mostly in barrels, but there's a small portion in foudre.

Jeb DunnuckCool blue fruit and tobacco leaf denote this wine, which packs almost Pauillac like power in 2023, not as overtly charming as it can be. The mid palate depth seems a bit coiled in with some standoffish tannins, but overall brisk and true to the style of the estate, if not a 'sunny vintage' on the palate. In short, a serious Domaine de Chevalier red that needs at least five years of cellaring to fully reward you. Drink 2028 - 2058.

Panos Kakaviatos - DecanterBlackberries, back cherries, barbecue smoke, cedar, smoked mint, and cigar box aromatics create the perfume. The wine is chewy, fresh, long, concentrated, and complex. The finish is like eating peppery currants dripped over Cuban cigars. Long, spicy, and intense, this is a vintage that will benefit from time in the cellar. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV, 3.68 pH. The harvest took place September 7 - September 30. Yields are among the lowest in the appellation at 31 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2029-2055.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Domaine de l'Aurage charges out of the gate with rambunctious scents of baked black plums, stewed black cherries and blackberry pie, with underlying suggestions of tar, unsmoked cigars, crushed rocks and cardamom. The full-bodied palate is rich with generous black fruit layers and an achingly plush texture, supported by a refreshing backbone and finishing with great length and loads of exotic spice accents.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2020 L’Aurage, the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux owned by the Mitjavile family, has a very attractive, ebullient bouquet of vibrant morello cherries, dark plums, blood orange and light vanilla-y scents, all very well integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky smooth texture, finely pitched acidity and good substance on the finish. It will require 2–3 years to absorb the new oak, but this could be Mitjavile’s dark horse of the vintage.

Neal Martin - VinousPolished and firm with fine tannins that provide form and beauty to this wine. Medium-bodied, creamy and attractive. Classy.

James SucklingPowerful and concentrated with ripe and bright blue fruit, true to the Mitjavile style in that it is dense and serious but also with a sense of momentum driving everything through the palate. Plenty of limestone slate texture also, this is a brilliant wine and easy to recommend. This is a buy for the price also.

2019 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape ChaupinChateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2024-2034)ABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkDomaine de la Janasse are one of the leading estates in Chateauneuf du Pape today, having been formed in the mid twentieth century by Aimé Sabon and named after the family farm “La Janasse” located in Courthézon. Today the domaine is run by siblings Isabelle and Christophe Sabon, each heavily involved in all aspects of production from vineyard to bottling.
Chaupin is a 100% Grenache cuvee with the vines planted as far back as 1912, each parcel planted on sandy soils. Grenache on sand produces wines with an elegant and refined character.Dense black as night colour with a deep dark red hue. Wafting from the glass are intoxicating black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice scents which are intermeshed with Provincial herb, peppered meat, scorched earth and spice notes. Combining glorious richness and power with structure, flamboyant black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry liqueur flavours are framed by a robust tannin framework that lends a sinewy feel to the otherwise voluptuous palate. Out of this world intensity and a dense textural feel are counterpointed by good underlying freshness. Lingering through the exceptionally long, brooding and muscular finish are notions of herbs du Provence, dried meats, spice and peppered earth elements.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Marked by scents of garrigue, raspberries and black cherries, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is full-bodied, rich and tannic but also incredibly ripe and long. The betting here is that the fruit outlasts the tannins and that the wine develops similarly to the stunning 2005. Drink 2025-2040.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 06, 2022)I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! Drink 2023 - 2044.

Black cherries and garrigue appear on the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape, a blend of about 60% to 70% Grenache, plus lesser amounts of Mourvèdre and Syrah. Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 06, 2022)I loved the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a classic Southern Rhône readers will love to have in their cellars. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly elegant, and even pretty, it has textbook red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, violets, and spice-like aromas and flavors. It’s always interesting when tasting through the wines from this estate to see the change in the tannins and just overall level of elegance when you move from their Côtes du Rhône to their Châteauneuf du Papes, and this is unquestionably worth seeking out and cellaring. It can be drunk any time over the coming 20 years. Drink 2021 - 2041.

As one might expect, this possesses the spiciest nose to this point with its wonderfully floral red berry fruit aromas. The borderline painfully intense flavors possess a super-sleek and chiseled mouthfeel that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth on the dusty, moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. I would strongly recommend not touching a bottle of this beauty before at least 10 years have passed. Drink through 2034+.

Once again, the amphore demonstrates its advantages in very ripe vintages as the nose is appealingly fresh with an even spicier array of plum, violet, anise and cinnamon scents. An airy, cool and slightly more elegant nose isn't quite as spicy, but it is certainly higher-toned with its combination of red and dark currant, cherry and discreetly floral-suffused aromas. Healthy dark red. Aromas of purple berries, black cherry and licorice convey a musky quality as well as a subtle liqueur-like aspect. Fat and very ripe but not a sweet style; in fact, this is less expressive and complex than Landanger's other two amphora wines in 2016. Suggestions of black pepper and herbs carry through to the finish, which conveys an impression of thickness but is still quite primary and undeveloped, even a bit pinched. Here I much prefer the "regular" version of 60 Ouvrées.
