55% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Counoise and 5% Carignan. And how much does importer Felix Riley love rosato!
Peach, blood orange, redcurrant, rosehip and dried flowers, a little nutmeg and spice, and a smattering of smoky dried herb. It’s crisp, sports a little blood orange bitterness, a fine milky/chalky texture, peach skin and citrus tang, a little leesy creaminess, and a tight and sappy finish of good length. Classic Provence. Drink 2023-2026.

Rasteau's 880 hectares of vines are planted on marl and red and yellow clay soils over sandstone with rounded stones covering some sectors, which in heatwave vintages act like health insurance against hydric stress. By law, the Grenache component in the dry red blends must be 50% minimum, with Syrah and/or Mourvedre 20% minimum and other grape varieties of the appellation tolerated up to 20%. In 2010 the Rasteau AOC was created allowing the wines to be named after the village, dropping the Cotes-du-Rhone tag and joining the likes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas at the pinnacle of the wine hierarchy in the Southern Rhone.

    A Rich Blockbuster Rasteau.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah sourced from vines over 60 years old and 40 years old respectively. The Syrah component is aged in old 225 litre barrels whilst the Grenache is aged in concrete vats for a period of 15 months.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated black raspberry and liquorice aromas infused with pepper are trailed by black cherry, scorched earth, dried herb and graphite notes. Rich and power packed, the palate is engulfed with succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which sit atop a scorched earth, subtle graphite, dried meat and peppered herb back drop. Robust yet opulent feel with a muscular tannin structure that is nonetheless well integrated. Outstanding torque with a long pepper laced pedal to the metal finish.

Concentrated and powerful, waves of rich, super succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp every corner of the mouth. All Grenache from very old vines and the clay soils of the Les Fouquesses lieu-dit, the 2020 Rasteau Héritage 1924 reveals a vivid purple/ruby hue to go with perfumed aromatics of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, and flowery incense. It's medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and has a seamless mouthfeel. Raised all in concrete tank, this naked expression of Grenache is going to drink beautifully for a decade. Drink 2023-2033.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. The nose is charged with black raspberry and liquorice aromas which are laced with fresh herb and white pepper. Hints of graphite and spicy black olive also chime in. The rich, concentrated palate is full in body but far from over the top. Delivered with prodigious power are black raspberry and liquorice fruits which are underpinned by a vibrant freshness and muscular tannin structure. Infusions of wild herbs, spice and white pepper flow onto the back half. Concludes with a long peppery aftertaste that combines juicy fruit with a sturdy feel.

Lots of kirsch, blackberry, leather, and garrigue notes emerge from the 2019 Rasteau Heritage 1924, a 100% Grenache release that was all destemmed and brought up in concrete, seeing no wood whatsoever. This medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant, lightly textured beauty has terrific purity, light tannins, and outstanding length. It’s more elegant and seamless than some of the previous vintages, which brought a touch more power and opulence, but I suspect it will gain richness with another year in bottle and drink nicely for 5-7 years. I was even more impressed by the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée than the 2019. Boasting crazily complex floral scents, garrigue, raspberries and cherries, this is one incredibly perfumed example of Pegau. Medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant and long, this is quintessential Pegau. Drink 2022-2037.

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is one of the strongest vintages for this wine in recent history. It is magnificent, soaring from the glass with pungent aromas of crème de cassis, ripe raspberry and strawberry, cured meat, tobacco, licorice, iodine and garrigue. Full-bodied, vibrant to the core and offering a multidimensional profile, this wine is really, really good. The Féraud family and the entire team deserve a round of applause for this sublime Cuvée Réservée, which will still be kicking ass 20 years from now. Drink 2027-2046.

A layered and well-balanced Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of wild berries, dried herbs, leather, roasted meat and stones. It’s full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Lots of layers and poise with a restrained character on the palate, despite the generous nature of the vintage. Complex and velvety with lots of cherry character and dried herbs towards the finish. Funnelled and structured with great focus and length. Better after 2025.

While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Midnight black dark red core with a dark red hue. Aromas of black cherries and liquorice infused with herbs du Provence are intertwined with scorched earth, dried meat, leather and blackpepper notes. Bold, intensely flavoured and amply endowed, rich black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice flavours meld into a prominent back drop of scorched earth, dried herbs, smoked meats, leather and pepper. Firm muscular tannin structure concluding long and chewy.

The 2018 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence is opulent and sensual, bursting with pungent aromas of raspberry jam, ripe blackberry and black cherry, garrigue, white pepper and crushed rocks. Essentially, this is the same wine as the Cuvée Réservée, but instead of maturing it for two years, Laurence Féraud keeps it locked away for four, leading to more concentration, slightly elevated alcohol and a firmer tannic structure. It concludes with a long-lasting finish. Drink 2023-2043.

Domaine Pegau Cuvee A Tempo is made from a blend of equal parts, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. The wine comes from parcels that are farmed using 100% organic farming techniques, and made its debut with the 2014 vintage. Vinification and ageing is performed in a combination of French oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and cement egg shaped vats. The production is quite small, with about 100 cases being produced in total each year.

Subtle crème brulee, citrus and wet stone notes are also evident. Rich spicy pear and apricot fruits are complimented by honeysuckle, crème brulee and citrus elements. Bottled in May, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is another incredible white from this estate. More melon, exotic tropical, and even hints of pear-like fruits as well as green almond and chalky mineral notes define the nose, and it’s racy and pure on the palate, with hints of licorice and salty minerality, bright acidity, a laser focused texture, and a great finish. Pegau's 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvée Réservée is almost Burgundian in character, the way it balances upfront generosity with mouthwatering length. The flavors are different, offering hints of crushed stone, underripe pineapple, white peach and dried spices, then this medium to full-bodied wine adds vaguely chalky textural elements on the long finish. Silky and streamlined, it does a wonderful job of preserving freshness throughout.

Now that it has been in bottle a while, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is looking even better than I projected based on last year's prebottling sample. It's all violets, cherries, subtle allspice and clove and traditional garrigue notes of lavender and thyme. Full-bodied and rich, it's crazy complex, adding hints of tar and black olives on the long, silky finish. It should evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe raspberry, cherry and garrigue, while a suave floral element expands with air. Fleshy, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and fruitcake flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral note builds as the wine opens up and carries through the sweet, strikingly long finish, which leaves behind red fruit liqueur and licorice notes.

The 2015 Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a beautiful, classic wine from the Feraud family that offers powerful notes of blackcurrants, peppered meat, garrigue, and that classic Pégau spice that's hard to find outside of this iconic estate. Possessing a deep ruby/plum color, beautiful complexity, full-bodied richness, and firm tannin, it has closed up slightly since I tasted it from barrel and is going to need 6-12 months of bottle age to bounce back, but this is a concentrated, powerful vintage for this estate that reminds me a slightly improved 2005.

In years in which there's no Cuvée da Capo, Feraud produces a Cuvée Laurence, which is similar to the Cuvée Reservée, but with extended aging (usually around four years) in foudre. The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Laurence is the current release, bottled at the end of November 2018, and it's a beauty, marrying leather and cherry notes in a full-bodied but silky, easy-drinking format. A blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% other varieties, it should drink well for at least decade.

Brilliant ruby-red. A complex, mineral-accented bouquet evokes raspberry and cherry preserves, incense and Moroccan spices, and a bright mineral flourish adds lift. Stains the palate with sappy, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit flavors complemented by suave floral and allspice notes. Shows real energy and spicy thrust on an extremely long, floral-driven finish framed by gentle, fine-grained tannins.

The 2014 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence is more upfront, forward, and charming, with voluptuous notes of garrigue, kirsch, blackberries, and flowers. It too is medium to full-bodied, has overflowing Provençal charm, light tannins, and an outstanding finish. It doesn’t have the concentration of the 2013, but it has more charm and upfront appeal. Here too noticeable wood sets off the spicier still and even more floral-suffused aromas that are also comprised mostly of red and blue pinot fruit. The tender, round and delicious broad-shouldered flavors brim with dry extract on the even more persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale despite a hint of warmth. As is usually the case, the positively gorgeous 2020 Rodin is more refined than the regular cuvée though it is slightly more structured as well. If you can find it, don't pass it up. Drink: 2038+.

Markedly spicier and very pretty aromas include those of red and dark raspberry, herbal tea and a whiff of the sauvage, all of which is trimmed in subtle oak. The succulent, refined and stony medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the caressing punch punchy and balanced finale. Drink: 2030+.

Notes of dark berries, cherries, sweet spices, rose petals and smoked duck preface the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant wine with a concentrated core of fruit, tangy acids and powdery tannins.

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is plenty of fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied, quite elegant and pure, smooth in texture with a discrete pinch of white pepper and allspice towards the finish. I like this manner in which this builds in the mouth. Juicy and mouthfilling. Drink: 2025-2045.

Bright, dark, dense purple colour, rich succulent and sumptuous raspberry but happily without coarseness, just exuberance. Some black fruit, this does show signs of being high octane but is rained in by the delicious freshness of the acidity.

The first hectare of vines was planted on the Domaine Grand Nicolet property in 1875. The winery was established in 1926 and further plantings of Grenache and Carignan were made, replacing cereal crops. The present owner, Jean Pierre Bertrand purchased the Estate in 1999 which has now expanded to 70 acres of vines.
A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah & 15% Mourvedre sourced from vines with an average age of 45 years with some of the Grenache vines more than 90 years old. A portion of the Syrah is aged in 2-3 year old barrels for 12 months with the balance matured in concrete tank vats for 18 months.

A rich, large scaled Rasteau loaded with dense black fruit framed by muscular tannins.

Dense pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Filling the nostrils are heady scents of black raspberry and liquorice with some black cherry, scorched earth, dried meat, herbs du Provence and blackpepper notes also evident. The rich, large scaled palate is a concentrate of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits framed by a stern tannin structure. Notions of scorched earth, dried herbs and peppered meats lie underneath. Dense and opulent yet grippy and muscular in its feel it boasts fantastic power. Finishes with surprising freshness and a long, robust blackpepper infused aftertaste.

This beauty is well worth seeking out and has classic Rasteau dark, meaty fruits as well as roasted herbs, leather, and pepper notes. Showing more freshness and floral notes with time in the glass, it’s full-bodied, has ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

I was able to taste two releases from Julien Barrot. Looking first at his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot, which is a blend of 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, and a handful of other varieties, it sports a deeper purple hue to go with a fabulous bouquet of kirsch and blackberry fruits as well as licorice, crushed stone, licorice, and ground pepper. It shines for its balance and elegance on the palate, but still brings substantial fruit as well as structure. It's a thrilling wine that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades in cold cellars. Drink 2024 - 2046.

A long time direct import, Domaine les Aphillanthes is located in the tiny village of Travaillan, just to the north of Châteauneuf du Pape, and is run by Daniel Boulle. Undeniably rich, chewy and powerful renowned Rhone wine critic Jeb Dunnuck describes them as ‘some of the best Cotes du Rhones out there…’.
A blend of 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre and 1% Carignan produced from vines planted in 1921 that yield little, but deliver incredibly concentrated fruit. Very deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. Fragrant spicy red to dark raspberry and red cherry scents infused with fresh herbs are married to hints of graphite, dried meats and blackpepper. Rich pepper laced red raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits show ample power and freshness across the medium to full bodied palate. Provincial herb, crushed volcanic rock and spicy dried meat accents add further nuance. Lending a meaty, robust like feel is bright acidity and muscular tannins. Blackpepper laden, it finishes long and juicy yet a touch grippy.

The 2019 Rasteau Cuvée 1921 comes from ancient vines (planted in 1921) and is 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, and 1% Carignan, which I believe was raised in tank. It takes plenty of air to open up and offers a striking Provençal bouquet of sweet black cherries, flowery incense, peppery garrigue, lavender, and saddle leather. It actually reminds me of walking through a street market in Vaison-La-Romaine in the south of France with its complex, incredibly satisfying Provençal aromatics. These characteristics all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't have the sheer elegance of, say, the 2016 or 2010, but it's a beauty. Give it a decant if drinking any time soon. It should put a smile on your face any time over the coming decade or more. Drink 2023-2034.

Demi-sec Vouvray is, after sparkling Vouvray, the most popular wine of the appellation and perhaps the most typical, showing Chenin Blanc at it most perfumed and expressive with just a delicate sweetness balancing the lively acidity.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.

Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Along with Rugiens, Les Grands Epenots is considered the best Premier Cru in Pommard and the soil here is slightly richer than Petits Epenots, with high levels of iron. Average vine age in these plots is over 50 years old, and the wine is fermented with 100% whole cluster before aging in barrel (30% new) for 12 months plus four months in stainless steel.

Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

The Californian project of two classic houses of France, Racines is led by vignerons Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne. The aim of this collaboration is to create a range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool-climate of the Sta. Rita Hills, in Santa Barbara County, drawing upon each individual’s experience and knowledge from the Old World. The resulting wines, thanks to careful handling and “classic” (as in less hands-on) winemaking, highlight each specific terroir with purity and transparency.
Two north-facing parcels of Chardonnay make up the Bentrock vineyard. One sits a little higher, overlooking the Sta. Rita Hills, in a very exposed perch on rocky soils; the lower one, protected by the hilltop parcel, is located slightly to the east and has more soil (a mix of sandy and clay loam).

Pierre Rostaing has been shortening the cuvaison for this cuvée, and the 2020 Cote Rotie Ampodium received closer to three weeks on the skins than four. The base Côte Rôtie from Rostaing seems to always deliver, and the 2020 Côte Rôtie Ampodium might be the best yet. Deep purple-hued, with a brilliant nose of black raspberries, spring flowers, camphor, scorched earth, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, lush mouthfeel, and building tannins. I've always thought the 2010 was the greatest vintage for this cuvée, but this is going to give it a run for its money.

Another enormously impressive barrel sample, the 2020 Cote Rotie Cote Brune is dark and plummy, with overtones of black olives, espresso and crushed stone. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it's dense, velvety and long on the finish. It's not as flattering to taste currently as the Cote Blonde, but it will be interesting to watch how the wines evolve over time—expect them to run neck and neck for a couple of decades. Drink 2025-2040.

Dark purple color. Hugely perfumed, mineral-accented black and blue fruit preserve, exotic spice, espresso, olive, smoked meat and incense aromas show superb clarity and pick up hints of mocha and candied licorice with aeration. Sweet, chewy and penetrating in the mouth, offering densely packed boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake, bacon and espresso flavors and a touch of salty olive paste. Shows outstanding energy on the strikingly long finish, which features youthfully gripping tannins and resonating floral, blue fruit and smoky mineral qualities. Made with whole clusters. Drink: 2028-2038.

A completely different beast, yet every bit as good, the 2020 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune reveals a dense purple hue to go with powerful, layered aromatics of black and blue fruits, iron, rose petal, violets, and pepper. Where the Côte Blonde is expansive and sexy, this stays incredibly focused, with remarkable purity, perfect tannins, and a finish that won't quit. Hats off to the team at Rostaing for another monumental Côte Rôtie that I wish every reader could taste. Hide bottles for 7-8 years and enjoy over the following 20-25+ years. Drink: 2030-2056.

Since the 17th century, the Roche family history has been bound to Cairanne, one of the most notorious villages in the Southern Rhone. Romain Roche is now in charge of perpetuating the family philosophy and their "all in the vineyards" approach to their profession. The grapes for the Cairanne come from a selection of naturally low yielding Grenache and Syrah vines between 40 and 105 years of age, within two distinct terroirs. The Grenache grows on the red clays and "Galets" of the Guarrigues plateau, while the Syrah comes from the Marly slopes of "La Montagne" with a northern exposure. Also included is a portion of Carignan. Each block is fermented separately with only the Syrah component matured in barrels and demi-muids (600 litres) for a period of 10 months.
Dense black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady black cherry and black raspberry scents fill the nostrils complimented by liquorice, provincial herbs, scorched earth and subtle peppered meat notes. Rich, lavish and dense the full bodied palate is awash with dark to black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits. Scorched earth, infusions of provincial herbs and spicy pepper elements linger underneath. Ripe and fleshy yet possessing a sturdy tannin structure and vibrant underlying acidity, it has a long sweet, juicy finish.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

The 2020 Cairanne shows the more elegant, charming, pretty style of this appellation, revealing notes of Provençal garrigue, violets, candied strawberries, and black raspberries. Medium-bodied, seamless, and downright pretty, it’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate and put a smile on your face over the coming 5-7 years.

An explosion of super juicy fruit.

Made predominately from 70 year old Grenache vines. Very deep dark red black core with a vibrant dark red hue. Elevated dark raspberry and liquorice scents combine with dark cherry, provincial herb and peppered earth notes. Rich, intense and succulently fruited yet remarkably fresh the palate is drenched with a tidal wave of dark to black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits. Infusions of herbs du Provence, subtle scorched earth and pepper linger underneath. Explosive power and depth. Ripe, slightly chewy tannins finishing very long and super juicy.

Moving to the two tiny production releases, the 2022 Cairanne Marcel Roche is 100% Grenache from the oldest vines of the estate and is still aging in stainless steel. It has a ripe, spicy, savory, medium to full-bodied style as well as lots of Grenache character in its red and black fruits and Provençal garrigue nuances. It has plenty of structure and is going to benefit from a few years of bottle age.

Stacks of spice, dried Mediterranean herbs and a touch of leather on the nose. Bold, structured and lively, this is an impressive wine for the humble appellation. Long harmonious finish with good complexity. A cuvee of grenache, syrah and carignan from vines that are over 50-years-old. Drink or hold.

Since the first vintage in 1990 the estate has picked up many accolades including the Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir being recognized as the World’s #3 Wine of 2013 by Wine Spectator Magazine.

Deep dark red heart with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Blossoming from the glass are perfumed aromatics of violets, ripe red cherries, red to dark plum and strawberries followed by some anise, spicy vanillin cedar and gentle forest floor. Rich and silky with close to medium body weight, the palate has an expansive fruit profile of spicy red to dark cherries, plum and ripe strawberries. Also evident are notions of anise, lightly toasted vanillin cedar, delicate earth and infusions of fresh herbs. Concludes with a nicely balanced freshness, velvety tannins and a long gently earthed aftertaste.

So much spice is the first impression here, this blended expression is well established as a powerful and complex style of pinot. Fresh red-cherry, potpourri, orange-peel, dried-flower, pomegranate and red and dark-cherry aromas, to name a few. The palate has such concentrated and layered style with dense red-cherry, blueberry and black-cherry flavors, delivered in a seamless build that holds so long. Impressive quality here. Drink or hold.

This Marsannay Villages comes from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, as well as fruit from newly planted vines in Couchée. The oldest vines in the cuvée date from 1949. It’s fermented and aged for 18 months in 600-litre barrels, and Pataille uses a little new oak.

Here the nose is markedly reduced, even slightly skunky and needs to be racked. By contrast there is good freshness and energy to the succulent and relatively energetic flavors that possess an attractive texture though the reduction shows up on the finish. Note that my projected range assumes that this will clean up appropriately. Drink from 2023+.

The 2019 Marsannay Blanc is a blend of several parcels. This showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is quite fat and juicy, good weight and an attractive waxy texture, but I feel it will need 18-24 months in bottle to get going. Drink 2023-2032.

Domaine Tempier is Bandol’s most well known estate and has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Their classic red cuvée is a blend of complex terroirs, mixing the variety of clay-limestone soil located around the Estate, but also those in La Cadière, Sainte Anne d’Evenos, and Ollioules. The varietal composition here is predominately from Mourvedre with some Grenache, Cinsault, and Carignan also included.
From this vintage the family has decided to rename their classic red cuvée: "Lulu & Lucien" to honour Mrs Lucie 'Lulu' Peyraud, passed away soon after the 2020 harvest at the age of 103. She joined her husband Lucien in what the family calls ‘Winemakers’ Paradise.’

Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Bandol Cuvee Classique had been blended the week before my visit. Already showing classic notes of tree bark and truffle layered against cherries and raspberries and a touch of olive, it looks relatively precocious. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, plush finish. Drink: 2023-2035.

Mainly Mourvèdre (85%), with Cinsault and Grenache, the 2020 Bandol la Tourtine was still in foudre at the time of my visit last year. Scents of cola, smoke and red berries provide ample complexity on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and almost creamy in texture while remaining fresh and dynamic on the lengthy finish. For whatever reason, the sample of Paris's 2018 Cornas la Geynale seemed less expressive than his Granit 60 (both were tasted blind). Herb notes accent mixed berries in a wine that's medium to full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with firm but ripe tannins and a long, gently dusty finish. With its strong track record, I have to think it's likely to show better next year when I revisit it.

Opaque ruby. Highly aromatic aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, incense, exotic spices, violet and a hint of olive. Densely packed and lively on the palate, offering intense dark berry liqueur, floral pastille and salty olive flavors, a hint of smoky minerality and building spiciness. Finishes chewy, focused and extremely long, with mounting tannins lending shape and grip to vivid dark fruit and floral notes. Drink 2024 - 2034.

The 2018 Cornas La Geynale is largely in the same style as the Granit 60, only with the gamey, bloody and meaty character (as well as tannins) turned up a notch. Black and blue fruits, rare meat, ground pepper, and wild herbs all give way to a structured, tannic wine that has beautiful purity and elegance. It's not for those looking for instant gratification, however. This cuvée comes from a single parcel, is not destemmed, and will see 16 months in 2- to 8-year-old barrels.

Deep, bright-rimmed magenta. Bright and energetic on the fragrant nose, displaying intense black/blue fruit and floral scents that pick up olive and cracked pepper notes as the wine stretches out.
