Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

From slate and porphyry soils, the Norheim 2020 Dellchen Riesling GG is clear, pure, fresh and flinty on the nose that reveals a ripe and concentrated seed-fruit aroma. Full-bodied, intense and salty on the palate, this is a pure, rich, elegant and powerful but refined Dellchen with a long, intense and sustainable finish. A great wine that just needs some years to shine in full brightness. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)Such a wide spectrum of super fine yellow-fruit aromas and a floral note that you struggle to take it in all at once. So sensual and silky that descriptors like “full” and “light” become redundant. Then the finish literally takes your breath and leaves you breathless for a long time. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comCornelius Dönnhoff harnesses the potential of this beautiful site and its volcanic soil every year to produce a textbook Nahe Riesling. It boasts crystal clear, cool, fresh ripe lemon fruit, with the creaminess of lemon tart on the palate along with herbal hints of woodruff and mint, which is al brought together in a dense structure. A beautiful wine which will age gracefully. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040.

Caro Maurer MW - DecanterVery reserved on the nose, but there are promising signs of an exquisite composition of stone fruit, delicate spices and a fine herbal note, which on the palate is completed by a tasteful salty expression. If it did not sound condescending, I would call it the softie among Dönnhoff’s Grosse Gewächse. Drink 2023 – 2035.

The 2020 Felsenberg GG is deep, intense and complex on the pure and elegant, well-defined and slightly flinty nose. Pure, intense and juicy on the palate, this is a crystalline, refined and salty Felsenberg with great terroir expression and length, even though the wine is still puristic or even ascetic in the finish. Not as charmingly fruity as Crusius’s interpretation but with the same length and tension. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021 and again six weeks later in Wiesbaden during the GG tastings. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)If you are a terroir fundamentalist, then this enormous depth of smoky and wild-herb character will light your fire, but otherwise approach with caution. With the second and third sip you feel the attractive, grapefruity side of the wine. Then comes the paradox. There is also a touch of grapefruit-pith bitterness at the radically mineral finish, and this adds to the excitement. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe Felsentürmchen is nowhere near ready yet. Neither will it ever be a crowd-pleaser. Grandseigneur Helmut himself called it masculine, which must not be interpreted as for men only. It’s rock hard though, encapsulating the pristine purity of minerality. It’s the end of my journey in search of the holy grail of dry Riesling. I always knew it had to be austere, craggy and rugged. Drink 2025-2040.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comAbsolutely pure on the nose with cool minerality, the fragrance of local orchards and herbes de Provence. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Felsenberg -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, and referred internally at the Estate as Felsentürmchen (there is a tower depicted on the label), offers a superbly delicate and complex nose with some flowery scents of anise, candied lime, lavender, Conference pear, and a hint of melon. It proves exquisitely creamy and finely juicy on the not fully dry-tasting palate and leaves a smooth and gorgeous feel of vineyard peach and almond in the long and spicy finish. This cask sample ready for bottling proves smoky and flinty at first before it reveals its very refined and finely aromatic nose of tangerine, vineyard peach, Conference pear, dried white flowers, and almond. The wine is delicately juicy and elegant on the smooth rather than bone-dry palate. The finish manages to bring the right amount of freshness as zesty elements and spices kick in. A hint of tartness in the after-taste still needs to integrate before this beautiful wine will show its best. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2020 Ürziger Würzgarten GG Alte Reben is pure, deep and salty on the remarkably clear, precise and complex nose. Full-bodied and juicy, this is a round and fruity, not all too dry Würzgarten that is stunningly pure, finessed and tensioned for this complicated Mosel vintage. Highly promising. Tasted as a cask sample in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2045.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comOn the nose the fragrance of ripe apple and pear is complemented by the Würzgarten’s unique spicy aroma. 2016 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Alte Reben Reserve Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$210. 00Bottle$2520.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkDr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

The 2014 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (AP #20) offers a nice flinty flavor intermixed with ripe Riesling aromas. Racy and piquant on the palate, but also rich and very juicy, with the sweetness well masked by the piquant and racy nature. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Mar 2016)Brown spices, vanilla and lime zest accent the tangy fresh apple fruit of this buoyant yet mouth-filling and subtly creamy bottling. Significant residual CO2 adds to the stimulation of a juicy, judiciously sweet finish. JamesSuckling.comFramboise and strawberry distillates, lime peel and wet stone inform an ethereal nose. There is some of the same delightfully invigorating impression of fresh, seedy red berries as in the as-yet unbottled “regular” 2018 Grosses Gewächs, a further demonstration that extended time in cask (this spent two years there) need by no means sap Loosen Grosse Gewächse of primary juiciness, animation or invigoration. In fact, the energy that this bottling projects is quite tightly wound. Alkaline, saline and kelp-like notes serve for intrigue and saliva-inducement on a tongue-tingling finish. The mineral and marine elements here are perceived more as a suffusion, and there is, for now at least, not the sense of transparency projected by the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. JamesSuckling.comSea breeze, wet stone and moss intriguingly greet the nose, joined by site-typical hints of vanilla and apple. The polished, subtly creamy palate features animatingly youthful, juicy apple and lime, and the lingering finish is admirably transparent to myriad nuances of a mineral, mossy and lichen-like sort. This wine’s combination of sensual allure with head-scratching intrigue delectably substantiates Loosen’s notion that his Grosses Gewächs could be improved upon by delaying the bottling of selected fuders for a second year or longer. And my intuition, like his, is that this approach should also conduce to longer bottle life, a contention that recent re-tasting of the vintage 2012 Reserves seems to support. Drink 2020 - 2030.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesApple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.
