Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Still very youthful, with a wealth of cool and delicate herbal and stone-fruit aromas. Very straight and vertical, with super-elegant and energetic acidity. Tons of chalky power, but the fruit is only just beginning to open up on the sleek but very compact palate. I love the really long, fragrant finish. The structure and harmony for very long aging! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Be prepared to be amazed! Staggering nose of ripe pineapple, Amalfi lemon, honeysuckle and mystery. Enormously powerful and concentrated with breathtaking drive, this heads off into space like a star ship. So smoky, with intense gunpowder character, but also notes of forest mushrooms and jack fruit. This is not only very concentrated, but also has an amazingly sensual mouth-feel that sets out in the wide field of exciting dry Alsace rieslings from the 2020 vintage. Expands and expands as it flows over your palate until it blows your mind at the unbelievably long, smoky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of lime, red apple and honeysuckle are followed by baked pear and rose water notes. Very rounded in the mouth the palate has ripe Jonathan apple, lime and traces of lychee fruit sitting over light cinnamon spice and subtle slate tones. The 2023 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling trocken GG opens deep, pure, intense and stony on the nose that is, to be honest, much more sophisticated than the Brücke GG. The wine is finely juicy as well as savory on the palate, probably not bone dry in terms of analysis but always in tension and never settling on the palate, as if it was just an idea of Riesling and not its materialization. This Hermannshöhle is not a cave (which it is only named after) but a bright Riesling ray to the heavens, a lasting flash of lightning from a thunderstorm that cannot be disliked or remain undrunk, even today. If you need a salty and spicy yet always seductively round palate-tickler now, please go ahead. But those who like to let the wine mature will not lose out. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024. Drink 2029-2055.

The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs, from a south-facing shale site with just a few calcareous veins, is golden in color. The vines were planted in 1949, and they now bring just small yields of tiny berries with a different pulp/skin ratio. A gorgeous lift tells of citrus zest, with an ethereal touch of crushed citrus leaf and spicier herb. The palate is crystalline. It's a clear-cut, taut, pure vision of stone and citrus. This is a pure, poised, precise and concentrated wine. Time and again, it is astonishing that so much flavor, stone and energy can be captured in a wine of such taut proportions at 12.5% alcohol. What an experience! There is no reliance on power, volume or fat, just slenderness, elegance and essence. (Bone-dry) Drink 2034-2070.

Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is from a steep site of volcanic origin with porphyry and melaphyr. A touch of yeastiness still plays on the shy, tentative nose. The palate comes in with stony saltiness, a tingling sense of juicy lemon intensifying the salty impression even more. Great concentration aligns with lightness and energetic linearity. The bright acidity has a serene luminosity and ripe yet crystal clear smoothness that seems to stretch away into eternity, lighting the way, gliding along, dynamic, optimistic, promising and full of light. The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Kabinett is on volcanic soils of porphyry. This is a vineyard that used to belong to an extended family. It was repurchased and is now vinified as a single site. The nose is of serene citrus. The palate is rich like lemon oil, concentrated, flowing and mouth-watering. Lemon fills the mouth, serene, yet with an inherent playfulness. All the fruit plays first fiddle for now, but the stone underneath just waits its turn. The 2022 is glorious, balanced and bright. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett beckons with a white peach hint on the nose. The palate is serene, edging its peachiness with lemon fruit and zest, tingling with stone and coating the mouth with an astringent, delicious acidity. This lovely high-wire act juxtaposes 9+ g/l of acidity with full-fruited, citric sweetness. The sinuses almost short-circuit between acidity and fruit. Helmut says, "I would never have thought in that summer that this would work. I never expected this." This is the benefit of this lateral valley and its east-exposition. To him, Kabinett is a "particular talent" of this vineyard. The 2022 is simply lovely, balanced, vivid and delicious. Drink 2023-2042.

The 2022 Riesling Kreuznacher Kahlenberg is further downstream and closer to the Rhine Valley, so this flowers and ripens earlier than the upper reaches of the Nahe. The bedrock is of Permian rhyolite overlaid with pebble and loam. A stony petrichor-like savoriness insinuates itself on the citrus fruit that almost has a flicker of bergamot. A creaminess appears later on. The palate is smooth, clear but rounded with fine, aromatic citrus. It's charming, with a salty, spicy zestiness. The finish is a pure, long note of lemon and ripe lemon zest with a smattering of white pepper. Drink 2023-2035.

Aged on the full lees until June this year and to be bottled the day after I tasted it, the 2021 Hermannshöhle GG offers a clear, deep, intense and complex bouquet of iodine slate aromas intertwined with lemon oil notes and those of crushed stones. Darker toned and more remote or aristocratic yet also intense and concentrated, it has a sur lie character and concentrated fruit. Full-bodied, dense, yet crystalline and saline on the palate, this is a powerful, rich and persistent Hermannshöhle with a long, complex and aromatic finish with fine tannins and stimulating lemon bitters. Still with rougher grip, this is an intense and lush, still dismissive Hermannshöhle. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2026 - 2070.

Cornelius Dönnhoff has no winemaking dogmas. Every year, he decides how best to bring out the wine’s origin. This time, each barrel (1200 or 2400 litres) had an analogous steel tank, with the wine from the barrel going into the steel tank after racking and the wine from the steel tank into the barrel. This enabled him to create a personality that is quite idiosyncratic, but also beautiful, with a mix of all-penetrating citrus fruit, quince, orange marmalade and ginger aromas culminating in a long finish. Dönnhoff's 2021 Felsenberg GG is pure, bright and flinty on the deep, intense and iodine nose that also reveals phenolic complexity. Full-bodied but refined and elegant on the plate, this is a balanced and light-footed, rich and dense Felsenberg with juicy fruit and crystalline acidity, whereas the tannins step back compared to the Höllenpfad im Mühlenberg. The finish is rich yet refined and saline, with delicate lemon bitters and lush fruit. Although the 2021 is already charming, the wine needs some years on the bottle to show all its complexity and finesse without its youthful charm. This is not an austere wine that needs to soften its edges; it's already dangerously good or even too good to cause patience. But the wine will reward those who can wait. 13% stated alcohol. From slate and volcanic soils, the 2021 Dellchen GG opens with a radiant, bright, pure and flinty bouquet with fascinating, refined and subtle, highly elegant yet delicate mirabelle and Amalfi lemon fruit intertwined with slatey notes. The bouquet is heavenly to me (and will be, believe me, for all true Riesling lovers). Mahler's 8th symphony, Fausten's Ascension—it's all here. Subtle intensity, a sense of wonder, perfectly interwoven, natural beauty. This nose already tells everything, and I couldn't go on to the next wine for more than half an hour. On the palate, this is a subtle and delicate, highly filigreed yet also incredibly intense, lush and slatey, long, stimulatingly saline and always uplifted Riesling with perfectly ripe and lush fruit with fine tannins. It is a juicy, ripe wine with crystalline acidity and endless salinity that carries everything. This Dellchen is intense yet never gets heavy, but it becomes even more intense. This is immaculate, highly emotional Riesling. It's not just the most beautiful Dellchen I have ever tasted but certainly also the most fascinating dry Riesling I have ever had. This is pure art. An adorable wine and with so much soul. It can't be expensive enough. When Helmut Dönnhoff was speaking about the feminine, charming and tender character of the cru, it is all here. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. If you are a terroir fundamentalist, then this enormous depth of smoky and wild-herb character will light your fire, but otherwise approach with caution. The Felsentürmchen is nowhere near ready yet. Neither will it ever be a crowd-pleaser. Grandseigneur Helmut himself called it masculine, which must not be interpreted as for men only. The 2019er Felsenberg -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, and referred internally at the Estate as Felsentürmchen (there is a tower depicted on the label), offers a superbly delicate and complex nose with some flowery scents of anise, candied lime, lavender, Conference pear, and a hint of melon. It proves exquisitely creamy and finely juicy on the not fully dry-tasting palate and leaves a smooth and gorgeous feel of vineyard peach and almond in the long and spicy finish. The enveloping, peachy aroma with just a whisker of fresh pineapple leads into a mind-boggling micro-cosmos of flavor that's simultaneously rich, yet also supernaturally delicate. Sublime balance through the enormously long finish. Great aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification.

The 2019er Hermannshöhle Riesling -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, immediately captures one’s attention with its beautifully aromatic and complex nose of whipped almond cream, candied grapefruit, pineapple, thyme, rosemary, orange blossom, dried white flowers, and a hint of marzipan. Layers upon layers of whipped cream wrapped into ripe zesty elements make for an intense feel on the palate. The finish is hugely long, precise, and well-balanced. This is a magnificent dry Riesling in the making.

The 2019 Riesling GG Dellchen is enormously fine and elegant on the subtle but fascinatingly complex nose that intertwines stony notes with yellow-fleshed stone fruit aromas. On the palate, this is an intense, highly finessed and elegant Dellchen with incredibly refined juiciness and great balance and purity. The finish is very long and complex but keeps the finesse and purity. Very stimulating and salty—a great Dellchen GG and one of the finest I have had from Cornelius Dönnhoff!

Ravishing bouquet of a thousand golden fruits and a staggering interplay of diamond-bright acidity and great succulence. Then, just when you think you've processed all that, along comes a monster wave of minerality, which sweeps you off your feet. But you land on the beach, deliriously happy. The 2019er Dellchen Riesling -GG-, as it is referred to on the consumer label, offers a delicately ripe and aromatic nose of pear, anise, minty herbs, grapefruit, tangerine, white flowers, and almond and coconut cream. The wine proves delicately zesty and light-weighted on the palate and leaves a zesty and linear feel in the long, smoky, and quite backward finish. It is still pretty much work in progress. It may well turn out to be even better than anticipated in a couple of years, as it develops more complexity and presence with age.

Helmut Dönnhoff and son Cornelius are hailed for making the best Rieslings in the Nahe region and some of the finest anywhere in the world. Cornelius bears with him the promise and burden of great expectations. Dönnhoff’'s world-renowned Rieslings were first carried into the international limelight by his father, but now it is the son assuming an increasing share of the responsibility for the estate.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pronounced lime juice, red apple and light honeysuckle aromas tail off into subtle orange blossom and slatey mineral notes. Light and fresh yet possessing good textural volume across the palate, lime, juicy red apple, pear and honeysuckle flavours fill the mouth complimented by light mandarin and flinty mineral characters on the back half. Vibrant juicy like acidity with a semi off dry finish and deliciously fruity aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Bosc pear, lime, struck flint and wet stone on the nose anticipate the brightly juicy, snappy, strongly stone-inflected impression on a polished, buoyant palate. Here is an excellent example of density allied to levity and animation such as vintage 2016 is especially capable of delivering. This finishes with an impressive sense of energy and a striking, undulating interplay of fruit and mineral elements. Fairly straightforward fragrance of fresh apple, pear and citrus aromas. The fruit is fresh and vibrant on the palate and well supported by citrusy acidity as well as a marked spicy piquancy. The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This cask sample ready for bottling proves smoky and flinty at first before it reveals its very refined and finely aromatic nose of tangerine, vineyard peach, Conference pear, dried white flowers, and almond. The wine is delicately juicy and elegant on the smooth rather than bone-dry palate. The finish manages to bring the right amount of freshness as zesty elements and spices kick in. A hint of tartness in the after-taste still needs to integrate before this beautiful wine will show its best. Drink 2025-2035.

Full-bodied and juicy, this is a round and fruity, not all too dry Würzgarten that is stunningly pure, finessed and tensioned for this complicated Mosel vintage. Highly promising. Tasted as a cask sample in Wiesbaden in August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2045.

What a beauty! So much wild berry and spice. Juicy and well-structured, the two sides of the wine already beautifully integrated. So much drive! Very long, spicy and stony finish.

On the nose the fragrance of ripe apple and pear is complemented by the Würzgarten’s unique spicy aroma. This also applies to the palate, where the initially straightforward delivery of sweet and sour fruit flavours are given an injection of lemon zest and ginger spice, to add an additional dimension to refine the overall expression. Drink 2021-2028.

The 2020er Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), comes from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Unterst and Oberst Pichter, Maxberg, and Layenhaus sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. It offers a beautifully complex and superbly refined and aromatic nose of cassis, almond cream, William’s pear, tangerine, orange, and spices. The wine is superbly playful on the palate, where its light juicy and fruity texture is wrapped into a blanket of spices. The finish is focused, long, and pure. This is a great dry Riesling in the making. Drink 2026-2040.

Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Brimming with red gooseberry and white peach character this is sleek and elegant with an unobtrusive structure that drives this forward with considerable energy. Wonderful herbal freshness at the long, positively tannic finish. Drink or hold.

The 2016er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Laychen (central part) sector of the vineyard and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. It offers a beautiful nose of flowers, fine spices, and juicy herbal elements. The wine is superbly racy and playful on the palate and proves incredibly multi-layered and juicy in the long finish. The aftertaste is subtle, persistent, and multi-faceted. While already approachable, it will be even more refined and airy in a few years, when it will have fully matured. What a great dry Riesling in the making. Drink 2026-2041.

The 2014 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (AP #20) offers a nice flinty flavor intermixed with ripe Riesling aromas. Racy and piquant on the palate, but also rich and very juicy, with the sweetness well masked by the piquant and racy nature. I find this Spätlese pretty young and would cellar it for at least seven or more years. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Brown spices, vanilla and lime zest accent the tangy fresh apple fruit of this buoyant yet mouth-filling and subtly creamy bottling. Significant residual CO2 adds to the stimulation of a juicy, judiciously sweet finish. I find the delicacy and clarity of the corresponding Kabinett marginally more appealing today, though this Spätlese should become more interesting with time and hold its allure longer. Drink 2016 - 2024.

Lush, with a creamy texture and flavors of gooseberry, glazed apricot and apple cobbler, matched to spicy notes. The honey-accented finish has some minerally hints. Drink now through 2013.

Touches of exotic spice and crushed minerals lend complexity to sun-kissed peach and melon flavors in this medium-sweet Riesling. It's punchy and spry, full of high-toned acidity and lift, but finishes long, lean and elegant. It's youthful and exuberant now, but should continue to meld beautifully through at least 2027.

This dry Mosel makes a bold statement with tons of spice, beautifully interwoven with the serious concentration, rolling over you in one huge wave that washes you up on a rocky, volcanic shore. In spite of all that, there’s great subtlety at the breathtaking finish. Drink or hold.

Framboise and strawberry distillates, lime peel and wet stone inform an ethereal nose. There is some of the same delightfully invigorating impression of fresh, seedy red berries as in the as-yet unbottled “regular” 2018 Grosses Gewächs, a further demonstration that extended time in cask (this spent two years there) need by no means sap Loosen Grosse Gewächse of primary juiciness, animation or invigoration. In fact, the energy that this bottling projects is quite tightly wound. Alkaline, saline and kelp-like notes serve for intrigue and saliva-inducement on a tongue-tingling finish. The mineral and marine elements here are perceived more as a suffusion, and there is, for now at least, not the sense of transparency projected by the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Drink 2020 - 2028.

The 2015er Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Reserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from parcels of very old un-grafted vines in the prime Pichter sector and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. It offers a breathtaking, undercooled, and superbly complex nose of aniseed herbs, smoke, spices, almond cream, honeyed yellow peach, muscade, quince, and fine buttery elements. The wine reveals a great creamy texture and plenty of superbly playful fruits wrapped into plenty of spices on the palate. This feeling carries over right into the hugely long and focused finish. The wine is still tight in the aftertaste but already hints at great refreshing elements of tangerine, minty herbs, and above all spices. Drink 2024-2040.

Super elegant and refined with great herbal delicacy, this is as graceful as dry Mosel riesling gets. Buy it also has deep slate foundations that give it imposing presence. I love the laser-beam, straight finish that shoots out in the direction of infinity. Drink or hold.

Sea breeze, wet stone and moss intriguingly greet the nose, joined by site-typical hints of vanilla and apple. The polished, subtly creamy palate features animatingly youthful, juicy apple and lime, and the lingering finish is admirably transparent to myriad nuances of a mineral, mossy and lichen-like sort. This wine’s combination of sensual allure with head-scratching intrigue delectably substantiates Loosen’s notion that his Grosses Gewächs could be improved upon by delaying the bottling of selected fuders for a second year or longer. And my intuition, like his, is that this approach should also conduce to longer bottle life, a contention that recent re-tasting of the vintage 2012 Reserves seems to support. Drink 2020 - 2030.

From volcanic soils, the 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling GG Alte Reben is beautifully clear, fresh and subtle on the precise and highly finessed bouquet of slate, iodine and herbal scents. The warm and elegant Riesling fruit intertwined with very fine herbal notes represents the very best of this exceptional grand cru in its original, much smaller size. Almost entirely sourced from the Urglück, this is a lush and intense, enormously powerful yet restrained and slatey Würzgarten GG with crystalline acidity that leads to a long, intense and still slightly astringent finish with refreshing lemon features. This wine is still developing and has the potential to become another giant of the vintage. Drink 2025 - 2050.

This is an extrovert Mosel GG with a ton of spice and berry aromas that are just beginning to open up. At once succulent and elegant on the palate, it manages to be complex and easy to understand, the finish very long and pure. Drink or hold.

Apple, pear and more than a hint of spice delight the olfactory perception, although there’s also still a little yeasty exuberance of youth. Very viscous on the palate. Juicy stone fruit makes the first call, but is getting caught up by a cool stony minerality towards the finish.

The 2019 Erdener Treppchen Riesling GG Alte Reben comes from two very old plots adjacent the Prälat (the upper part of the former original Treppchen and the lower Herzlay) that have never been replanted since long before World War I. It shows a clear, intense yet subtle and deep, highly complex but also refined bouquet of very fine red slate and herbal aromas as well as perfectly clear and elegant Riesling fruits. Silky textured, highly finessed and perfectly balanced on the palate, this is a very intense and juicy, enormously long and concentrated yet finessed and mouthwatering Treppchen with the crystalline grip of broken slate and the intensity and complexity of biblical vines in a great terroir. The 2019 Treppchen is arguably the finest dry wine I have ever tasted from Ernie Loosen. Highly recommended. Drink 2020 - 2050.

Stunning aromas of beautiful lemon curd, apricots and anise. Packed with fruit and so succulent, although it is properly dry. Very intense, long finish with anise, fennel and minerals. Drink or hold.

Quite gentle on the nose with fennel representing the herbal element, while nuances of peach and yellow plums bring fruit to the fragrance. The palate is more forward with juicy stone fruit and a rich viscous texture. Even minerality is served in liquid form with an appetising saline flavour. Well balanced and quite accessible already.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
