This offers plenty of fruit and a deeply fleshy texture on the palate. The nose is all melon, peaches and limes and the palate has such juicy and fleshy texture, combined with a flash of bright, refreshing acidity, holding melon, pears and white peaches fresh and long. A concentrated and delicious AC from Fèvre in 2018. Drink now.

Sourced directly from the cellars of William Fevre and drinking superbly now this is a rare opportunity to purchase bottle aged Chablis in pristine condition.
Brilliant pale straw colour with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. The nose reveals elevated  aromas of pear and lime infused with gun flint followed by hints of dried honey, quince and oyster shell. The palate is still remarkably fresh but has built more textural volume due to additional bottle age. Pear and lime fruits abound over an oyster shell, subtle dried honey and gun flint infused back drop. Finishes dry with brisk, refreshing acidity. 2017 Domaine William Fevre Les Lys Chablis Premier Cru
    Chablis, FRANCE
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

The “Les Lys” Premier Cru vineyard is located on the left bank of the Serein River, overlooking the villages of Chablis and Milly. One factor that contributes to this wine’s expressiveness is its unusual exposure: east/northeast. The proportion of clay in the soil is higher than usual in Chablis, which overlies Kimmeridgian sub-stratum, which exists throughout the Chablis region. This area is cool and the grapes ripen slowly and progressively in the afternoon shade. Exposure and terroir guarantee the minerality, finesse and elegance of this Premier Cru.

    Other Reviews....
A perfumed nose offers up cooler notes of iodine, floral, citrus and white orchard fruit and in particular pear. Yet again there is a plethora of Chablis elements present on the vibrant, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that are a lovely combination of richness and finesse, all wrapped in a moderately dry, balanced and sneaky long finish. Worth considering.

From one-hectare on the top of the slope, the 2017 Chablis Les Lys 1er Cru has an attractive orange blossom and beeswax scented bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is quite concentrated due to the relatively lower yield, touches of orange peel and pear with impressive weight on the finish. This lesser-known Premier Cru is well worth seeking out.

Cote Bouguerots lies at the bottom of the slopes of the Grand Cru, Bougros, where the vineyard drops sharply towards the banks of the Serein. This is an unofficial, but clearly distinct sub-climat, with whiter soils and steeper slopes than the rest of Bougros. Domaine William Fevre are well known for producing Cote Bouguerots wines from the grapes grown here.

Aromas of crushed stones and oyster shell here with a fresh, lemon and yellow-grapefruit edge. The palate has a very taut and composed feel with really assertive acidity, combined with such juicy and fleshy fruit. The result is long and delicious! Drink or hold.

The 2017 Chablis Bougros Côte Bouquerots Grand Cru, picked around 23hl/ha, has a detailed bouquet with Granny Smith, grass clipping, white flower and orange pith scents that are very well defined and seem to gain intensity with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little fatter and weightier than the regular Bougros with quite an intense, saline finish. Excellent.

A deft touch of wood can be found on the cool and equally pure aromas of various citrus, spiced pear and oyster shell hints. There is fine density and punch to the brooding and powerful large-scaled flavors that brim with minerality on the tightly coiled bitter lemon-inflected finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose resurfaces.

Tasted from bottle, the 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots is already quite open and expressive, bursting with aromas of fresh peaches, oatmeal and dried white flowers, with little trace of the reduction it showed from barrel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny but incisive, displaying good concentration and an impressive spine of tangy acidity, which lends superb cut and drive to the chalky finish.

2022 Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard. The 2022 vintage was cool and featured one of the longest growing periods Wilson’s have ever experienced.

An outstanding Polish Hill Riesling – concentrated, crunchy fresh and textural

Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Intense aromas of lime juice, lemon and Granny Smith apple intermingle with wet steel, chalky talc and mineral notes.  Extraordinarily concentrated, lime, citrus and green apple flavours burst across the mouth watering palate with a voluminous feel counterpointed by crunchy acidity. Notions of orange rind, chalky talc, wet slate and steely mineral characters linger on the back half. Taut yet textural it boasts magnificent power and an aftertaste that’s exceptionally long, slatey and intense.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From the core parcels in the cru, the 2022 Morstein Westhofen Riesling GG is pure, intense and chalky on the elegant, dense and spicy, darker-toned nose that is still a bit untamed but deep and exciting, even with woodruff aromas! Enormously mineral and tannic on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and enormously complex, masculine and monolithic Riesling that needs a lot of time in the cellar to develop and refine. The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs opens with reduction, but vivid, pure and lifted lemon shines through. The following sniffs reveal lemon balm and dried crushed herbs suggesting coolness, serenity and more yeasty depth. The palate has a certain stoniness, an austerity, suggesting wet, chalky deep earth rather than deeper fruit. Graceful phenolics build the frame and coat the mouth. This only ever seems to point deeper into stone. Fine-boned yet powerful, the 2022 is a sleeper. This is endurance and solidity, unmoved by fruit. Austere but grand. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2050.

The 2021 Morstein Riesling GG offers a deep and intense yet pure, nuanced, fresh and highly complex bouquet of crushed limestone, even chalk intertwined with bright, lemon fruit aromas. This bouquet is nothing less than spectacular in all its purity, subtle intensity and depth. The palate is silky, pure and saline, beautifully fine and fresh, very elegant and long yet still discreet and reduced in its expression. However, this is a chalky and lemony Mortsein from a cool year that will gain texture and complexity with bottle age. The 2021 Kirchspiel Riesling GG offers a nose to fall in love with: pure, intense, highly elegant and refined, like a Chablis based on perfectly ripe and pure Riesling fruits. It is incredibly chalky yet also lush and tropical in its fruit and intertwined with yeasty notes. Full-bodied, round and elegant on the palate, this is a lush and salty-savory, very stimulating yet quietly textured Kirchspiel whose acidity is really delicate and elegant and just holding the texture instead of cutting through it. If I had to bring a German Riesling to Alsace producers (who usually don't favor German Rieslings due to their malic acidity and reduction), Wittmann's Kirchspiel would be the one to choose. It is a very elegant and balanced wine that is based on five plots, of which one vat underwent malolactic during the alcoholic fermentation. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. A hedonistic interpretation of Morstein. As usual, Philipp Wittmann has used both the potential of the site with its clay marl and limestone soil as well as the potential of Riesling to create a wine with great personality. It juggles herbal notes of amber and woodruff with ripe, juicy lime, apricot and peach fruit. Boasting soft, refined acidity, it is both graceful and generous at the same time. Lush yet precise and refined on the elegant palate, this is a highly tensioned, grippy and chalky dry Riesling with great finesse, sustainable grip, intensity and stimulating salinity. A great Kirchspiel!

Let go of the narrow human world and fall into this expansive dry riesling that busts out of the conventional framework for the grape variety. And that's what makes it so difficult to describe. However, there is certainly more yellow fruit (mirabelle, but also a hint of pineapple) than white (some ripe pear) and the minerality is huge, yet totally precise and delicate. The finish really doesn't want to stop! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification.

The 2019 Aulerde Riesling GG is enormously chalky and flinty on the rich and spicy yet pure, refreshing, deep and fruity nose. Silky textured, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a complex, structured, very elegant and juicy but linear and persistently mineral dry Riesling with remarkable purity and tension. The tension and grip of the 2019s offer impressive proof that Wittmann more and more manages to make the Aulerde a real Grosses Gewächs. However, the distance to the exceptional Westhofener 1G is smaller than to the Morstein GG.

Tasted as a barrel sample at the end of April 2018, Wittmann's 2017 Morstein Riesling GG is deep, ripe, precise and aromatic on the nose and backed up with great and complex chalky minerality. Full-bodied, round and elegant, with lots of salty stones and vitality, this is a great Morstein that Philipp composed very strictly to keep the level of its most famous wine extremely high. The finish is piquant, pure and salty but also intense and perfectly ripe. Bottled with 12.5% alcohol. Only 6,000 bottles were produced (a loss of 50%) due to the hail at the end of August.

Although a bit shy and many years from its peak, this is clearly one of the finest dry Rieslings of this great vintage. Wittmann's iconic 2015 Riesling GG Morstein comes along as a limestone rock incarnation of Riesling with concentrated fruits and lemon perfume on the nose. Fermented in Doppelstück (2,400-liter oak vats), the 2015 is cool and herbal on the nose, very chalky, citrus-like and beautifully concentrated. It has ripe pineapples aromas and crushed rocks. This is extremely well focused, pure and precise. Fresh and salty on the palate, this full-bodied and highly elegant 2015 is intense and juicy, but also taught and very piquant in the finish. This wine is long, persistent, very complex and salty on the finish. There is really good tension and grip here and the chalk seems to crumble on the palate. A promising and powerful Morstein that will further improve in the bottle. This is a Must Have of the 2015 vintage. The acidity is almost Mosel-like in its delicacy. The finish has great grip and tension. This is great wine. "Morstein is so complex, because we have so many parcels here and can compose like how we want. But the central part gives great wines in every year." Total production is 1,1000 liters.

This offers a gorgeously precise and fruit-infused nose of minerals, grapefruit and strawberry puree as well as minty herbs. The wine oozes elegance and purity on the palate, where a touch of breadth just add a smooth side to the focused and delicately zesty structure. This finish is pure chalk and grapefruit heaven. Be prepared! This is the most closed of the 2016 Wittmann Grosses Gewächs, but it has extraordinary finesse. Then the fundamental power climbs out of the abyss and pushes the incredibly fine, chalky finish out towards infinity. Please wait until at least 2018, because this has enormous potential. No hurry! I don’t get to drink enough of this Grosses Gewächs to be able to confidently declare a change in style, but the 2016 takes me by surprise with its abundance of aromatics and extreme ripeness. Apricot, peach and nectarine are just some of the fruits that ooze sweet juice on the palate, and a curvaceous body and creamy texture only serve to emphasise the generous expression of the vintage. But Wittmann’s Morstein does not just rely on big is beautiful, as it addssome fine spicy and mineral notes for sophistication.

The 2016 Morstein Riesling GG is super clear, fresh and intense but also pure, fine and chalky on the nose, indicating remarkable finesse and complexity. The attack on the palate is really fresh if not piquant, the wine pure, fresh and mineral, with almost no flesh but lots of salt and minerals as well as fine, juicy tannins. Still terribly young but precise and well-defined, this is an endlessly salty and stimulating Morstein for a long-distance run. Gorgeous and very promising in its finesse, elegance and purity. A classic from late-ripening grapes. Great, great finesse here and a very long, pure finish. There is 33% less Morstein than in a normal year due to strict selections in the vineyard and also in the cellar, where only the vats with the most persistent wines were chosen to become GG.

Although the Kirchspiel opens with its usual generous exhibition of exotic and stone fruit aromas, a delightful fragrance of highly scented Mediterranean herbs adds intrigue. Currently there is a significant generational shift happening in Burgundy, and these new names are seemingly better trained and better equipped to succeed than ever before. One of the most exciting of these new talents is Thibaud Clerget now heading up his family's Domaine Clerget. Based in Volnay, Thibaud represents the 28th generation of his family's winemaking history in Burgundy, and in a few brief vintages has created significant buzz. In true Burgundy tradition, Thibaud is equally as happy on the tractor in the vineyard as he is in the cellar, confident in taking on all aspects of the process. Since 2019 vintage the family holdings in Volnay and Meursault have been bolstered with further contract arrangements adding prime parcels such as Meursault Perrieres and Corton Grand Cru.

Here too soft if perceptible wood sets off prominent floral elements, especially acacia and lilac, on the apple and mineral reduction-suffused nose. There is slightly better volume to the caressing but punchy medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a very dry and sneaky long finish. This would benefit from having better depth though more is almost sure to develop if the wine is held for a few years first. Drink from 2026+.

Widely considered the finest vineyard in Meursault, Les Perrières is marked by thin, rocky soils with high proportions of limestone. Across the various parts of Perrières, the topsoil is the thinnest, consisting of just a crumbling of limestone marl over the hard bedrock. The presence of the limestone helps to contribute minerality to the wines, a characteristic that Perrières wines are particularly noted for, especially in relation to Charmes or Genevrières wines.

Once again there is just enough wood lurking in the background of the more elegant and vaguely Chablis-like aromas of iodine, mineral reduction, quinine and pretty floral wisps. The wood, while again subtle, does extend to the palate as well of the sophisticated flavors that brim with both minerality and underlying tension on the strikingly long and balanced finale. This will need to develop better depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range though it appears to have the stuffing to do just that. Drink from 2028+.

Brilliant pale straw colour with some greenish highlights on the rim and watery hue. Exotic and intense the nose provides a very scented bouquet of lychee over some tropical fruits and a hint of musk with light spice end notes. Rich with a luscious oily like texture the palate boasts mouthfilling flavours of lychee and musk overlaying a touch of honeysuckle with a very spicy finish. Excellent concentration. Medium dry with long persistent lychee, musk and spice aftertaste.
