The 2022 Mâcon-Pierreclos 1er Jus de Chavigne is a brilliant young wine in the making, unfurling in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, white flowers and crisp stone fruit, thrown into relief by subtly exotic top notes. Neal Martin - Vinous‘You need to pick Pierreclos at just the right moment,’ according to Guffens-Heynen's winemaker, Julien Desplantes. To judge from the evidence of this superb bottling, it has. The must is carefully pressed and only the first-press juice is used. It is fermented in cask without settling to produce a wine of bewitching complexity with aromas of ripe apricots, quince and exotic spice. Velvety in texture, with impressive density and an interminable finish, yet enough substance to bring everything into balance. This is a simply marvellous wine. Drink 2023 - 2040.

The 2022 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne is a worthy new entry in the series 2016, 2018 and 2022, though where exactly it will sit among those titans will be easier to assess in bottle than it is in barrel. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of white flowers, citrus zest, Asian pear, peach, nutmeg and bread dough, it's full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with huge levels of concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 20, 2023)The 2022 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et Les Vieilles de Chavigne comes from one of the highest parcels (up to 430m). These vines were planted in 2003. Matured in 50% new oak, the 2022 fulfills the promise I found last year from barrel. It's precise and more mineral-led than the Premiers Jus cuvée. The palate has exquisite balance, with hints of yellow plum, white peach and mango. The 2022 shows impressive density with not a powerful but rather a "voluminous" finish packed full of flavor. There's a sense of completeness here that I adore. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousThis riveting wine boasts aromas of Williams pear and quince with accents of lemon zest, ginger and hay. The texture is concentrated, almost tannic, and long, but balanced by an astonishing freshness. The grapes come from two parcels of low-yielding vines (one very old, one planted in 2003) at the top of the slope. The wine is not made every year, but when it is it's fermented in cask (almost 40% new) and gives one of the most distinctive wines of the Mâconnais. Drink 2025 - 2065.

Aromas of green pear, confit orange, almond paste and white peach preface the 2022 Saint-Véran 1er Jus, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with a textural attack that segues into a taut, electric palate, concluding with a long, saline finish. This is another strong performance this year, lent additional concentration by a touch of passerillage in the warm, dry weather before harvest.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 20, 2023)The 2022 Saint-Véran Premiers Jus comes from the free run juice from Guffens' three plots and was bottled in February after maturation in 25% new oak. This has a controlled and delineated bouquet of apple peelings mixed with orange rind and beeswax. There's just a touch of reduction. The palate is well-balanced with plenty of peach and yellow plum notes, a taut line of acidity and a very harmonious, slightly sapid finish. Excellent. Drink 2025-2036.

Based on La Côte, complemented by En Carmentrant, the 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé C. C. is forward and expressive, delivering aromas of orange oil, peach, nutmeg and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate that remains lively and dynamic.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 20, 2023)The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé C.C contains only free-run juice from the north part of the Roche de Vergisson on clayey soils. One of my favorite aromatics from Guffens this year, it delivers beautiful white peach, pear and almond scents, becoming a little fumé in style with aeration. The palate is supremely well-balanced with a slightly viscous texture. The acidity maintains tension and delivers the requisite salinity on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2035.

Including some fruit picked as it began to turn color (a condition known as "levroutée" in Mâconnais parlance), Guffens's 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Cuvée Unique unites all his holdings in the appellation. Exhibiting aromas of citrus zest, mint, confit orange, white flowers and nutmeg, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with uncommon richness and structure for the vintage, concluding with a long, slightly lactic finish.

2018 Guffens-Heynen Macon-Pierreclos Tri de ChavigneBurgundy, FRANCE$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of citrus oil, crisp Anjou pear, blanched almonds, white flowers and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's searingly intense, with an elegantly textural attack and a racy spine of acidity. Still tightly wound after its recent bottling, this has a long and glorious future ahead of it. This cuvée was produced from three picks—spread over the course of 12 days—in Guffens's higher-altitude holdings in Le Chavigne, and it was raised in barrels, some 30% of which were new. Drink 2025 - 2045.

2018 Guffens-Heynen Macon-Pierreclos Juliette et Les Vieilles de ChavigneBurgundy, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne is tightly wound and introverted, but its incredible tension and palate presence is impossible to miss. Unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, orange oil, nutmeg, fresh pastry and pears, it's full-bodied, deep and immensely incisive, with huge concentration and structuring dry extract, girdled by racy acids. Long and penetrating, this is one of the wines of the vintage in the Mâconnais. As readers will remember from the inaugural 2016 rendition, this cuvée hails from a parcel of vines ("Juliette") that were stunted by the 2003 heat wave and which have always produced tiny yields. The more generous yields of 2018 gave Guffens sufficient volume to fulfill a long-standing ambition to vinify them separately, and to this, Guffens added the fruit from his 1.05 hectares of old vines in Mâcon-Pierreclos, which yielded a mere 37 hectoliters. The resulting wine was fermented and matured in barrels, 50% of which were new. Drink 2026 - 2045.

As I wrote last year, Guffens's longstanding cuvée "C C" gains an additional consonant this year, thanks to the inclusion of his holdings in Les Crays—typically included in the Hauts des Vignes bottling but demoted this year, as it yielded more than usual—becoming the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Trois C., a lovely wine that offers up aromas of white flowers, crisp yellow orchard fruit, peach and wheat toast. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and elegantly muscular, it's bright and lively, concluding with a chalky finish. This was raised in barrels, some 30% of which were new. Drink 2022 - 2038.

Guffens has tended to blend his holdings in En Carmentrant and La Côte with his later press fractions to produce a more approachable, demonstrative wine; so it is worth emphasizing that this is not the case this year, for the 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé C. C. contains no press wine. "I never saw such beautiful grapes," he observes, and he wanted to see how far they could go. Exhibiting notions of orchard and stone fruit mingled with white flowers, beeswax and citrus zest, the wine is full-bodied, layered and racy, with a gourmand core of fruit that's underpinned by bright acids. It's the finest rendition of this cuvée to date—and in reality, it's an entirely different style of wine.

A radically cool and delicate riesling for Rheinhessen, where generosity is more or less the rule. Sleek and light-bodied, but with a wonderful racy energy and wet stone mineralty that together make this feel much drier than it really is. Long, extremely clean, lightly spritzy finish. The 2020 Rothenberg GG opens very clear, fresh and aromatic with elegant, ripe stone fruit aromas intertwined with a delicately smoky mineral spiciness. Round and beautifully juicy on the palate, this has very fine grip and a somewhat lactic creaminess that I found rather atypical for this Rothenberg that normally bursts with tension. I'm curious to follow the 2020 over the next couple of years, but at this early stage, it doesn't grab me like the 2019 did. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2040.

From a cooler side valley of the cru, the 2019 Riesling trocken Pettenthal GG is pure and flinty on the nose as well as displaying coolish terroir aromas. Lean and rich at the same time, this is a coolish, pure and silky-textured, salty Riesling with enormous grip yet also tannins. The finish is slightly austere. Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged rim. Red apple and lime aromas mix with hints of honeysuckle, toast and spice.
