Here there is sufficient reduction present to mask everything but a hint of citrus character. There is slightly better volume to the markedly intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that also conclude in a bone-dry, youthfully austere and chiseled finish that is just a bit finer. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Beaune Blanc Grèves 1er Cru has an understated nose, backward and just thinking of what to say at the moment because here the malo was particularly tardy. The palate is more expressive with citrus lemon and lime, orange rind and light peach notes on the finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2033.
88-90 points
Neal Martin - VinousJust one barrel made, malolactic done. Clear pale colour. A reductive quality, though with finesse. I like the balance of this though I still wonder why it was planted to chardonnay. Very nicely persistent, with some nuance of fresh citrus. Drink from 2024-2028.

A very fresh nose offers up prominent aromas of petrol and spice that are trimmed in subtle oak nuances. The succulent and supple middleweight flavors exude a discreet bead of minerality that imparts a sense of lift to the bone-dry, youthfully austere and lingering finish where a touch of rusticity slowly emerges. This could use better depth so 5 to 8 years of keeping should prove helpful in that regard. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Santenay Cornières has an attractive bouquet with apple blossom, hints of apricot and white peach that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a precise level of acidity, the power from its clay soils driving the finish along. A pleasant rondeur here. Drink 2024-2036.
89-91 points
Neal Martin - VinousPale lemon colour with a green tint. Two barrels only of which one new. The oak does play a part in the bouquet. Otherwise, clean and lemon scented. Quite tightly knit with a faint reduction. Still quite some acidity, though this has calmed down since malolactic fermentation. Drink from 2024-2027.

This is also aromatically quite fresh with more citrus emphasis to the aromas of green apple, resin and pretty floral nuances. The delicious middle weight flavors also reflect ample citrus influence before terminating in a focused, linear and bone-dry finale. This offers very fine quality for its level. Drink through 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe palest lime infusion tint to the colour. A refined nose, not too reductive, crisp with a slight lemon note, white fruit behind, well balanced without too much flesh and very good length. Keeps on kicking!

Once again there is plenty of citrus influence on the layered aromas of spiced pear, apple, white peach and just sliced fennel. The more refined and slightly more voluminous flavors possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension as well as an abundance of minerality on the lingering and balanced finale that isn't quite as dry or youthfully austere. Good stuff and worth considering. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe first to be picked and still 14.1%, though as this note demonstrates, this Caillerets can easily handle that degree of ripeness. There is more green in the colour blend this time. This starts discreetly, then builds brilliantly on the palate, the acidity is really well integrated, seamless and vibrant. Really delicious graceful wine with a light cream touch at the finish.

Once again there is enough sulfur to overshadow the underlying fruit that clearly seems ripe. There is very good density to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that flash focused power on the bone-dry finish that is shaped by lemon-tinged acidity. There is a hint of warmth but it's sufficiently subtle to materially impair the balance. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOld vines, a few from the 1930s and the rest 1960s. Glowing pale lemon and lime. The nose is quite reticent with a touch of reduction. There’s good depth here, with an agreeable energy though lighter acid. The flesh starts to build at the back of the palate.

A deft application of wood sets off the ripe and appealingly spicy nose that displays mostly white peach and hints of orange peel. The sleek, delicious and well-detailed middle weight flavors are caressing but punchy on the very dry and youthfully austere finale. This should benefit from a few years of keeping to unwind and ultimately reward 6 to 10 years. Drink 2026+.

Hints of matchstick and petrol add a bit of breadth to the pretty aromas of essence of pear, apple and soft lemon rind nuances. Part of this classic red wine vineyard was replanted to white in 1999. Light lime touch. Toasty, actually this is an interesting bouquet even though I am against chardonnay in this vineyard. Thick ripe texture with some smoke. First to be picked and even so leading to a generous fleshy finish, with relatively low acidity.

Once again sulfur overshadows the fruit rendering the nose impossible to assess. By contrast there is good freshness to the finer if slightly less concentrated flavors that possess a refined texture along with plenty of minerality on the sneaky long and austere finale. This too should repay extended keeping as it will almost certainly add body and depth with time in bottle.

Since there were no appellations for Ligurian wine at the time, Agostino chose to name the winery after his father and their locality, Massaretti.
The vineyards are planted on sandy alluvial soil and enjoys striking diurnal temperature shifts thanks to the alternation between winds from the sea during the day and from the land at night. These two factors combine to provide the perfect home for Pigato to develop their full aromatic potential, giving light wines that are easy to drink but more elegant and complex.

Cool and wet conditions over flowering resulted in fewer berries per bunch and then a record dry spell through January and February ensured berries remained small and concentrated, bringing richness and weight to the 2019 release.

The 2014 Chardonnay is a blend of three vineyards. The vineyards are divided into lots that are harvested at different times: Agrelo at 3,117 foot elevation, Villa Bastías at 3,675 foot elevation and Gualtallary at 4,757 foot elevation. Each vineyard is vinified differently and aged separately. The wines are blended at the end before bottling. The nose is subtly oaked with white fruit and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and has very nice acidity which makes the wine not only fresher, but also longer and more mineral. This is the freshest of all the vintages of this Chardonnay, and the change in vineyards is really noticeable. Super! Drink 2015-2019.

2022 Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard White Bones ChardonnayMendoza, ARGENTINA$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenClosure: CorkThe Adrianna Vineyard, known as Catena Zapata’s "Grand Cru", lies at an altitude of about 1,500 meters and it's divided into several unique parcels, each with distinct soil profiles, microclimates, and characteristics that contribute to the complexity of the wines.
The name White Bones comes from the soil beneath these vines, which is rich in calcareous deposits, limestone, and fossilized animal bones—traces of an ancient river that once flowed through the area. These soils reflect a unique mineral quality in the wines, contributing to remarkable tension and complexity. Focused on Chardonnay, this parcel produces vibrant wines with intense minerality and floral aromatics.
Other Reviews….
Sourced from a parcel of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, planted at 1,450 meters, the 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Bones delivers a distinctive flavor. Crafted in a cool, sunny vintage, the chalky soils of Gualtallary lend a compact character to this high-altitude Chardonnay. Yellow in hue, it opens with aromas of hops, ivy and pea shoots, accompanied by hints of mint, sage, ginger and lime. Slightly concentrated, with vibrant energy and tension, it offers a blend of chalky texture, elevated acidity and a compact yet graceful palate. It lingers with long-lasting flavors and a subtly malic texture. This mountain white wine set a benchmark in 2009 and reaffirmed it in 2022. Drink 2024-2034.

JamesSuckling.comFrom an extreme high-altitude, grand cru-level site in the cools of Gualtallary, the 2022 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Bones is distinct in its aromas of the native jumilla that surround the site, providing an herbal, earthy invitation to the light-bodied, refined palate of gravelly texture and minerality. Light and ethereal in style, it shows its limestone roots, and just a hint of oak, given 12-16 months of aging in oak barrel, all second, third, or fourth use. This wine practically buzzes in the glass with elegance and verve. Another 20 years of aging is not unrealistic. An outstanding wine! Drink 2025-2045.

JamesSuckling.comI had the opportunity to taste two vintages (2020 and 2021) of the top whites side by side and could see the differences of the two years quite clearly, as the wines express the natural conditions of the year quite faithfully. The 2020 White Stones Chardonnay is riper than the other three wines; it's a very good wine, but it shows the warmer year with a rounder mouthfeel, faintly creamy, still a little closed in the nose, which slowly reveals yellow fruit and some spice. The palate is quite gentle, with 13% alcohol and very good balance. Drink 2023-2029.

2022 Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin Viandris Cuvee 1938 Melon a Queue Rouge ChardonnayJura, FRANCE$440. 00Bottle$5280.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkBenjamin Benoit is fast becoming one of the Jura’s most exciting voices. Working in Pupillin with traditional methods and minimal sulphur, his site-specific wines offer a precise, elegant expression of Jura terroir. Cellier Saint Benoit sets a new standard for quality in the region.
From a 0.1 ha plot planted at over 10,000 vines/ha by Benjamin Benoit’s great-grandmother in 1938—also the birth year of his grandfather. The variety, Melon à Queue Rouge, is an old Jura mutation of Chardonnay named for the red-tinged stems. Once widespread, its low yields and small berries led to a decline in plantings post-1960s. The vineyard lies on limestone soils at high elevation in Viandris. As with the domaine’s other whites, it is whole cluster pressed and aged in neutral barrels. A rare, old-vine Chardonnay selection handled with care to highlight its inherent acidity, structure, and historical significance.
Other Reviews....
The 2023 was still in barrel, so we tasted the 2022 Chardonnay Viandris Cuvée 1938, which is more reductive and flinty. It comes from the family's oldest vines, which were planted by his great-grandmother, so he added the planting year to the wine's name. He switched this plot to a high canopy in 2024, so we will see the change in future vintages. The soils are marl with "éboulis calcaire," or limestone scree, on the surface. The wine already shows more mineral, serious and intense than the other Chardonnay. It reveals a nice balance, a nice texture and very clean aromas and flavors. It's perfumed and attractive and makes you go back to the glass over and over again. It's not a shy wine at 14% alcohol, and it's round and powerful. This shows very high potential. They knew what they were doing in the past... 1,022 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2024. Drink 2025-2032.

2022 Cesar Marquez Perez La Salvacion GodelloBierzo, SPAIN$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkCesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.
Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.
La Salvacion is a Godello cuvee from the east facing Argaza vineyard situated at 700 meters altitude with clay soils.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 La Salvación is quite tight, serious and a little closed. It's riper and rounder than the 2021, with 13.5% alcohol but keeping the freshness and acidity, with pH of 3.09 and 7.35 grams of acidity. It's juicy and tender, with a chalky sensation in the finish. This is round and very approachable. 7,936 bottles were filled in August 2023, after the wine spent 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. Drink 2024-2029.
