What is "GG"?

Grosses Gewächs (often shortened to "GG") is the designation for Germany’s top dry wines from its best vineyard sites. These vineyards, known as Grosse Lage, are the equivalent of Grand Cru, and are tightly classified and regulated by the VDP (Germany’s leading growers’ association). To carry the GG symbol on the bottle, the wines must come from a recognised Grosse Lage site, be harvested by hand, fermented dry, and released only after an extended period of ageing.
