Fourth-generation vigneron Fabien Coche took over his family’s domaine in 2005. Hailing from one of Burgundies most famed families (Coche-Dury was part of the same domaine until 1940 and is run by his cousin Raphael), Fabien has quickly become the Coche of the current generation making the most waves. His enviable vineyard holdings total nearly 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard and Auxey-Duresses. Organic farming has been practiced here since 1998 for the 40 plots of vines that the family owns. Average vine age is impressive with more than 60% of vines over 60 years old.
Perrieres stands alone in Meursault as its finest wine and many regard this vineyard as a candidate for upgrading to grand cru status. Located on the southern border of the appellation bordering Puligny Montrachet, here the aromas, flavours, and structure of this fabulous premier cru site are very distinct, with real intensity, lift, and perhaps more citric character.

A cool, restrained and airy nose features notes of mineral reduction, smoked green apple and pretty floral wisps. There is fine density and power to the larger-bodied flavors that possess a caressing if markedly intense flavors that exhibit outstanding depth and persistence. This is an excellent wine that displays first-rate fruit-acid and concentration balance. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has turned out especially well, opening in the glass with aromas of pear, peach, white flowers, freshly baked bread, nutmeg and hazelnuts. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's unusually textural and broad-shouldered for this Ladoix-derived cuvée, displaying bright acids and chalky structuring extract.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose with apple blossom, hazelnut and light white chocolate scents. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, quite taut and linear, saline in the mouth. Maybe a bit more weight here would not go amiss, but I appreciate the energy that should hold it in good stead. Drink 2025-2045.

Pale lemon colour, a little waxiness, a touch of oak, not so many stones. Then a quiet patch, then the real wine comes out behind with a little lime juice. It is a bit disjointed at this stage in its elevage. This normally turns into a first rate wine, but it is not showing its full potential on today’s form.

Here the equally layered nose is a bit more expressive with its aromas of white orchard fruit, abundant citrus and discreet wood influence. The slightly bigger flavors also possess an exceptionally refined, sleek and encompassing texture while displaying focused power on the complex, sappy and balanced finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. At present, this isn't quite as complex as the BBM though it may catch it in time. Drink through 2028+.

The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with aromas of ripe orchard fruit, hazelnuts, freshly baked bread, baking spices and buttered toast. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's generous and giving, with lively acids and plenty of mid-palate weight. As I've written before about this cuvée, if it can pick up some additional tension during a second winter on the lees, my score will seem conservative.

The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very well-defined, quite mineral-driven bouquet with touches of white chocolate and even a hint of marron glacées percolating through the citrus fruit. The palate is extremely well balanced, but tight and focused, good depth, quite creamy towards the finish. Very difficult not to swallow this now, but it will age very well in bottle. Excellent. Drink 2025-2045.

Bright clean pale yellow. Immediately there is more weight of fruit compared to the Faiveley 2020 Bienvenues-Bâtard, more power in a good way here. The class absolutely explodes on the palate, white fruit with just a little additional ripeness, all the weight in the world but disciplined. Very long indeed.

Here too the nose is cool and restrained with a discreet application of wood framing the layered aromas of honeysuckle, white peach and a variety of floral nuances. The refined and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before terminating in a persistent, balanced and dry finale. This is also understated and lovely with the balance and material to reward at least a decade of aging. Drink through 2030+.

The palate is well balanced, quite intense with the power offset by the acidity, very critic with a tang of bitter lemon. The new oak slightly occludes the finish but that will be subsumed with time. Good potential, but chuck it in a cellar for 4-7 years. Drink 2026-2046.

Drink this Bienvenues over the next 12–15 years.

This is a bit like an over exuberant puppy. Fun at a very high level.

Rich and muscular, the 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru exhibits aromas of pear, citrus zest, toasted nuts, honeycomb and white flowers. Full-bodied, broad and powerful, with lively acids and an ample core of ripe fruit, it's the most dramatic wine in the range. If it can pick up some additional tension during a second winter on the lees, my score will seem conservative.

This is a step above the Bienvenues this year and it should age with style. Bon vin!

If anything, the Bâtard has the fresher colour of the two, or perhaps less yellow, but the nose is softer and creamier. Less in the fruit register, more powerful, even though these are the same rows of vines as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, just slightly up the slope! More stones here, so the soil drains better. The fruit is agreeably lifted on the palate, ultimately the more classic, the more stylish of the two. A wine for greater reflection over a long period. Impressive.

His losses to frost prompted Carillon to blend much of his holdings together into a cuvée of 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village, which is composed of around 80% premier cru and 20% village-level fruit. Exhibiting aromas of dried apricots, tangerine, honeycomb, preserved peach, flowers and nutmeg, it's medium-bodied, with a satiny attack, lively acids and a mordant finish.

There is excellent punch and delineation to the delicious flavors that conclude in a nicely dry, crisp, lemony and lingering finish. This is a fine Bourgogne that should repay a few years of keeping if desired. Drink through 2024+.

Pale lemon and lime, this is quite light on its feet up front yet with a stunning intensity behind, with a citrus intensity of acidity as well. It will doubtless flesh out with three to five years in bottle. Very promising.

Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren't quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it's almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required. Drink through 2036+.

The palate is very well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity, good weight and density. I do wonder if the Bienvenue plans to give it a run for its money in this vintage? Why not? Drink 2026-2050.

The 2021 Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet delivers a block of power which will take much longer to come round, while the finish builds to an extraordinary degree. Drink from 2029-2038.

With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.
The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. Domaine Roy is also producing a Chardonnay grown on a stunning half hectare vineyard located in the village of Marsannay called “les Champs Perdrix”.

An exuberantly fresh nose reflects notes of straw, petrol, citrus and apple. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the overtly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean and dry finale that is shaped by bright lemon-tinged acidity. This refreshing effort should drink well almost immediately. Drink from 2023+.

Hints of the exotic sit atop the aromas of straw, petrol and yellow and white orchard fruit. There is both good detail and vibrancy to the lightly stony middle weight flavors that conclude in a clean, dry and delicious finale. This isn't elegant; indeed it flirts with rusticity, but it is refreshing and a wine that should be enjoyable young.

The 2018 Marsannay Blanc is showing remarkable freshness for this hot year. As always, the nose offers delicate, cool fruit with hints of exotic orchard fruits – lovely white peach – and furthermore a good mineral backbone. I like the white Marsannays, and they tend to support the rich vintages very well. The Domaine Marc Roy plot is in the Marsannay Les Champs Perdrix located in the southern end of Couchey, at the top of the slope.

One of the greatest Premier Cru terroirs of Chablis, Montée de Tonnerre has a sandy, rocky topsoil rich in Kimmeridgian limestone. The one-hectare parcel that produces this wine is situated within the lieu-dit of Chapelot, which is separated from the Grand Cru Blanchot by a narrow ravine. The vines cover two contiguous plots, one 50 years old and a second parcel recently replanted. This is regularly the most mineral, chalky, deep and powerful Premier Cru Chablis in the range.

A youthfully structured classic, the 2021 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre opens to reveal notes of green apple and crisp stone fruit mingled with clear honey, beeswax and oyster shell. Moreau’s Petit Chablis comes from a single 2.5-hectare site in Beine, just outside Chablis on the way to Auxerre. It has a southwest orientation and lies on Kimmeridgian soils (as opposed to the higher Portlandian soils on which most Petit is grown). Half of the plot is home to 25 to 30 year old vines, while the other half is somewhat older at 45 to 50 years old. Naturally fermented, this wine was vinified in large vats of 32 to 100 hectolitres.

Moreau’s village Chablis is drawn mostly from 20 to 30 year old vineyards in Préhy and Courgis, both in the south of Chablis. Then, there are parcels in Chablis and Chichée (under the Premier Cru Vaugiraut). All up, the domaine has the luxury of working with 30 parcels scattered across the appellation, representing a variety of soil structures and exposures. All the fruit from the younger vines is sold off in bulk, which perennially helps Moreau deliver a Chablis greater than the sum of its parts.
The Chablis was picked over various dates, depending on the plot. The fruit was subject to a very gentle four-hour press, and the juice was fermented with natural yeasts (a rarity in Chablis). It was raised mostly in tank, yet the élevage was unhurried. This spent 20 months on lees, considerably longer than most Chablis of this level. These traditional methods, along with hand-harvesting, the quality of the terroir, low yields and the full ripeness levels at which the fruit is harvested help to explain the mouth coating texture, salty depths and the quality that is on offer.

Rich pear and dried honey flavours are intermeshed with faint crème brulee, almond and wet slate on the back half. Full creamy like textural feel concluding with good freshness and a long wet slate and almond laced aftertaste.

The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Chevrieres 1er Cru, one of Merlin's most precocious Premier Crus (0.65 hectares) has a touch of menthol on the nose that conveys real vigour. The palate is very well balanced with a silky-smooth entry, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a distant tang of lemongrass and stem ginger, chamomile and touches of bergamot furnishing the finish. What more could you want in a Pouilly-Fuissé? Drink 2023-2042.

The 2020 Saint-Véran Côte-Rôtie comes from soils with a high level of active limestone, prompting Merlin to describe the wine as almost Chablis-like. It has a taut and direct, minimalist, flinty bouquet where you can almost smell that limestone. The palate is tense and very mineral-driven, plenty of salinity here…it just cries out for some fruits de mer! Drink 2023-2035.

This superb lieu-dit in the village of Davayé in the St-Véran appellation faces due south on steep, rocky soils at the base of the rock of Vergisson. It is among the first parcels to ripen. Grapes were picked on 27 August and they delivered a wine of concentration and depth, with aromas of ripe apricot and peach, accented with a saline minerality and a hint of spice from the oak élevage. This substantial wine is eminently ageworthy. Drink 2023 - 2033.

The single vineyard Les Cras bottling is the emblematic wine of Domaine Olivier Merlin. Situated almost next door to their house on the limestone plateau, Les Cras produces wine that is both generous and approachable, yet near unmatched for longevity in the region.

Bottled just prior to my visit, the 2020 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a taut and crisp, petrichor-tinged bouquet, backward compared to Merlin's other cuvées but nicely focused. The palate is well balanced with a slight menthol tincture, fine acidity with plenty of substance towards the slightly honeyed finish that manages to maintain tension. Excellent. Drink 2023-2036.

TOP VALUE & UNDER THE RADAR The new generation arrived in 2010 with the arrival of David & Arnaud, following on from their father/grand-father. Roland first bottled his own wines in 1979 and the domaine has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Vauprin is a special selection on the hill of Vauprin, situated close to Lignorelles. Vines range from 20-80 years old and the parcel is 1.8ha in size. This AP Chablis is notable for the confident way in which oak is used (up to 50%, ranging from new to five-year-old). Lovely density on the palate allied to purity of fruit. Here, the oak really does add a lot of complexity but the Chablis character is still evident underneath. A very fine Chablis. From south-west facing vines in the hills around Lignorelles, the vines were planted in the 1960's and cover 3ha. The wine is fermented in steel tanks, with 60% aged for 10-12 on lees in tank, and 40% in older wood. Doesn't have quite the richness of the Vauprin Chablis but this is still a very fine, pure expression of 2021. Lovely acidity and mineral notes compliment the grapefruit characters and ripe pear fruit on the palate. Complex and classy. No hurry to drink this. Drink 2023 - 2027.

Passion fruit and mango dominate, though the wine is saved by good acidity behind. Interesting to see if the heaviness wins out or a second winter’s elevage livens this up. Tasted: November 2021.

Derived from old vines in Les Minots (that are a source for the Fèvre massale selection), as well as holdings in Roncières and Chatains, the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons unwinds in the glass with notes of white flowers, crisp stone fruit and clear honey. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's a beautifully vibrant, racy wine that concludes with a long, penetrating finish. It's the best young Vaillons I've ever tasted chez Fèvre. Agreeably fresh and pretty aromas are comprised by those of cool and restrained spiced apple, sea breeze and white floral nuances. The intense and utterly delicious middleweight flavors possess a chalky texture while displaying fine detail on the lingering bitter lemon-inflected finish. This delicate effort isn't especially dense but offers the hallmark finesse of a quality Les Lys. Lovely. Drink from 2026+.

The 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys is also especially good this year, delivering aromas of white flowers, citrus oil, freshly baked bread and bee pollen. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a fleshy core of fruit and racy girdling acids, this cool, marl-rich site has evidently excelled in 2020. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The sleek, refined and beautifully delineated middleweight flavors possess a bracing salinity on the sneaky long and well-balanced finale. Like several wines in the range, this beauty needs to develop better depth, but it is very stylish and should age effortlessly so more complexity should eventually manifest itself. Drink from 2030+.

The 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is a terrific success, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, confit citrus and oatmeal. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and complete, it's fleshy and seamless, with fine depth at the core, racy acids and a long, expansive finish. After several years where this site bore the brunt of hail and frost, Montée de Tonnerre is back with a vengeance. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Clear light bright lemon, the spices show on the nose, which is right for this vineyard, but there is both power and discretion on hand. Not quite biscuit but there is sort of a wholemeal texture here. Brilliant wine for those who want the more powerful side of Chablis. Still a bit of stone licking at the back.

The restrained and layered nose makes clear that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its aromas of algae, iodine, oyster shell and spiced pear. The texture of the medium-weight flavors is also sleek and intense with slightly better density if a bit less refinement to the youthfully austere bitter lemon-suffused finish. Lovely and while qualitatively equal to the MdT, it offers a markedly different expression. Drink from 2030+.

One of the finest wines in the portfolio this year is the 2020 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, a taut, youthfully reserved bottling of immense promise. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, beeswax, crisp white peach, white flowers, freshly baked bread and oyster shell, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with terrific tensioning intensity in a tightly wound format. It's warmly recommended, though patience will be required. Drink 2028 - 2050.

Attractive pale lemon, similar beautiful pale lemon colour with a light lime tint. The nose is startlingly fine, with a haunting elegance. Why in these hotter years are the Vaulorent wines seemingly even finer? The terroir dominates the vintage. A citrus zest weaving in and out of white fruit. Harmony and balance. Hardly able to assimilate all the intensity. What a wealth of dry extract!

This is restrained to the point of being all but aromatically mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes notes of green fruit, citrus peel and oyster shell nuances to reveal themselves. There is both excellent volume and concentration to the big-bodied, powerful and imposing flavors that are focused, structured and youthfully austere. This is very much a work in progress, and I would advise allowing this at least 5 years of cellaring and it should easily reward a decade or more. Drink from 2030+.

This is generally the richest, most fruit-driven grand cru bottling chez Fèvre, but the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros is a wine of particular distinction. Exhibiting aromas of peach, citrus blossom, bee pollen and oyster shell, it's a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that's ample but elegant, with racy acids and a long, saline finish. Lighter lemon yellow, the bouquet offering a light touch of menthol and especially anis. Deeper generous soil here but they think they have learnt to get the best out of it. Certainly a grand cru wealth of fruit, the acidity keeps the balance very nicely, a generous warm overcoat and good length. Nice wine!

There is excellent size, weight and richness to the broad-shouldered yet sleek flavors if not nearly the same refinement on the powerful and driving finish. This even more firmly structured effort is impressive as well, though with an entirely different texture. Drink from 2032+.

The holding is on the crest with lots of kimmeridgian powdered marl. A more intense green and pale gold colour. The primroses are out. So too are the spices. Like Vaudésir, the yields are relatively low here in 2020 at 35 hl/ha. Very powerful but the teeth are coated in Chablisian mineral freshness.

A discreet dollop of wood sets off the ever-so-mildly exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, passion fruit and subtle mineral reduction wisps. There is a positively gorgeous texture to the highly refined middleweight flavors that culminate in lightly stony, focused and sneaky long finish. This could use a bit more depth though overall, it is a classic Vaudésir of lace and grace that should generously reward a decade or so of cellaring. Drink from 2030+.

Gorgeous crystal clear pale lemon. Sunshine to the nose, in a good way. But such purity and elegance that it can handle the sunshine, stretches out to an impeccably balanced finish. The William Fèvre holding is on the sunny side of the valley, while a yield of just 35 hl/ha explains the additional intensity. Some spices at the back.

In a sense, the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots offers a resumé of several of Fèvre's grand cru bottlings, uniting the taut musculature of Valmur and the ethereal, mineral profile of Les Preuses, with some of the perfumed sensuality of Vaudésir and fleshy texture of Bougros. The result is certainly a very compelling wine, exhibiting aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, white flowers, freshly baked bread, oyster jus and white peach, followed by a full-bodied, taut and layered palate that's seamless and complete, concluding with a pungently mineral finish. It's worth a special effort to seek out, though a decade's patience is warmly advised. Drink 2030 - 2050.

There is again excellent volume and concentration to the powerful and muscular flavors that also coat the palate with dry extract on the impressively complex and hugely long finish. This is classic Les Clos in that it manages to be at once big and overtly powerful while remaining refined and classy. This is, in a word, stunning. Drink from 2032+.

Glowing citrus yellow. Restrained intensity, a wine of the highest class from the first sniff. At the outset it is all about the fruit, and the stones (undeniably present) can wait. There is a huge intensity of pure white fruit, very concentrated at the finish, inalienably Les Clos. I suggest a long wait before you open your bottles, eight to ten years or more.

Nos Cinq Terroirs (Our Five Terroirs), is a tribute to the merging of vineyards across the Mâcon-Villages, Saint-Véran, and Pouilly-Fuissé appellations started by Jocelyne and Michel Paquet in 1980. Nowadays their children, Camille, Mathieu and Jean-Baptiste, continue the tradition. Camille oversees viticulture and winemaking, while Mathieu and Jean-Baptiste handle selling the wine.
The Paquet family carefully tends to each of their 50 plots, using only local organic and biodynamic compost to keep the soil healthy. The newer generation aims to honor their family's past while exploring a more hands-off winemaking style. In 2021, they achieved their first certified organic vintage.

Bright pale straw to straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. The nose features attractive white peach, pear and dried honey scents trailed by hints of cashew and spice. Fleshy textured and vibrant, generous white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours fan out across the mid weighted palate with some subtle biscuity nougat and gun flint elements lying underneath. Excellent concentration and depth with a well endowed yet undeniably fresh finish that has an underlying minerality to it.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
