A delicious mid weighted Rhone with a mix of red to black fruits, excellent freshness and slightly chewy tannins.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes is comprised of 30 hectares and located near Gigondas in the Rhone Valley. Farmed organically and biodynamically, proprietors Daniel and Hélène Boulle maintain a high commitment to quality, keeping only the finest 80% of grapes for their own use and selling the rest off. The 2020 releases are not as dark fruited and show more freshness and an energetic feel.
An equal parts blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Very deep dark red black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Seductive aromas of red to dark raspberries, red liquorice and red cherries intermingle with scorched earth and light pepper notes. On the mid weighted palate rich dark raspberry, black cherry and red liquorice fruits make for an intriguing mix of flavours. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper lend further interest. Lastly, and a wine that will be a candidate for perfection in 4-5 years, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Centenaire reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of black cherries, licorice, iron, nori, and peppery garrigue. As with the base 2019, the estate did an incredible job with the tannins, and this wine is flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and the sheer class to evolve for 25+ years. This is a perfect example of power with no sensation of weight or heaviness. The blend in 2019 is 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 6% Syrah, and it wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in concrete tanks, with just 6% in very old barrels. Drink 2021 - 2046.

The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire is approximately 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 6% Syrah, predominantly from a vineyard planted in the late 19th century. Aged almost entirely in foudre, it nevertheless hints at smoke and campfire on the nose while remaining dominated by black cherries and red raspberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, with ample depth and richness, this really shows its class on the long, silky, mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for upwards of a decade. Tasted blind. Drink 2023 - 2035.

A rich and very concentrated Chateauneuf with impeccable balance between the huge fine tannins, red fruits, candied orange peel and dried flowers. So powerful, but not a jot overbearing, this is only just beginning to reveal its enormous depths. Extremely dense long finish. Wait long enough and this will taste like Grand Cru Burgundy on steroids! Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

Vaccelli's Granit Blanc is a selection of 100% Vermentinu vines 26 years old on average, sitting at the highest part on the hill facing the sea. This aspect lends a gentle salinity to the complex range of lemon and yellow stone fruit flavours, driven long on the palate with wet stone mineral streak. Another outstanding example of how in the right hands Vermentino has the capacity to engage the senses as well as any other white varietal.

One of the few blends produced by Vaccelli, Quartz Rouge is a mix of 40% Carcajolo, 40% Minustellu, and 20% Sciaccarellu. Among the Vaccelli reds, Quartz is a more impactful example, with the power of Minustellu and the structure of the Carcajolo supported by the intense fruity character of Sciaccarellu. Tannins are fine, guiding the conclusion to this delicious, energetic red.

Quartz Blanc is one of the few blends produced by Vaccelli, using a mix of four white grape varieties native to Corsica: Carcaghjolu Bianco, Riminese, Ghjenuvese and Cudiverta. A relatively new wine in the range, the vines for Quartz were planted in 2013 on sandy granitic soils. Quartz displays a harmonious balance between the fleshy citrus and green fruit, supported by white florals, honey, and a sappy bitter spice finish. Layered over this profile is a hint of curry leaf and wisps of smoke normally associated with premium Jura Savagnin.

With the world of fine wine expanding all the time, new names continually rise to prominence and quality estates don't stay hidden for long. Domaine de Vaccelli is one such winery, deserving of their reputation as one of the most exciting projects in the market today. Bottles of Vaccelli are now quickly finding their way on to Michelin star restaurant wine lists, and into the cellars of collectors around the globe. This tiny winery based in Cognocoli-Monticchi on the island of Corsica champions local varieties Sciaccarellu (red) and Vermentinu (white), elevating each to a level of refinement seen only in the greatest wines of the world.

Initially formed in the 1960's by Roger Courrèges, the estate is now run by his grandchildren Nathalie and Gérard Courrèges. Certified organic since 2008, all vineyard work is performed by hand, while only native yeast is used during vinification which occurs in stainless steel tanks. Wines are then aged in a combination of stainless steel, barrique, 600L demi-muids and concrete eggs.

As to the style of wines, Vermentinu, or Vermentino as it's more commonly spelt, is the most important white varietal on Corsica where it excels in the wind swept sea side hills. Often fragrant and delicately fruited, Vaccelli produces examples displaying vibrant minerality with a gentle spiciness and ample racy acidity. These are complex whites that speak clearly of their island home and are notable for their supreme detail and balance.

On the red side, Sciaccarellu is the dominant variety where it thrives in the dry soils of Corsica. Known as Mammolo in its home of Tuscany, here it produces wines pale in colour yet generous in fruit and spice, with the slightly elevated alcohol balanced by fresh acidity. You'd be forgiven for thinking these were high altitude Nebbiolo such as Gattinara, and drinkers of these northern Italian reds will find much to enjoy here.

The Vaccelli Rouge is a blend of two parcels of 25+ year old Sciaccarellu vines, one exposed east-west, and the other one north-south. Flavours range from dark plum and kirsch to blood orange and mint, framed by firm, al dente tannins. Light in body yet powerful in flavour, there's more than a passing resemblance to alto Piedmont Nebbiolo here, and would charm drinkers seeking an alternative to those northern Italian reds.

Much of the reputation for Corsican wine lays in the production of cheap and plentiful rosé, yet Vaccelli target a more serious and food friendly example. Vaccelli Rosé is 100% Sciaccarellu from vines averaging 30 years old and planted on slopes of sandy granitic soils. Pale onion skin in colour, juicy white strawberry and peach fruit abounds married to citrus peel and white florals. A gastronomic rosé with ageing potential of 6-8 years.

    Other Reviews....
From 20-year-old Sciaccarellu vines on granite soils, the 2020 Ajaccio Rosé was matured for 19 months, including 11 months in wooden tanks and 600-liter barrels on the lees. It has a delicate, very fresh bouquet with aromas of spices, garrigue, lemon oil, iodine and candied orange. Medium to full-bodied, with a textural and silk structure, it’s built around bright acids and a lingering, salty finish. This vintage can be approached with pleasure even if it has 3-5 years of evolution ahead of it. Drink 2023-2030.

Rosés, when properly vinified, can age extremely well, and this is the case with this stunning 2020 Ajaccio Rosé. The color is beginning to evolve slightly, but it's the nose in particular that is absolutely fascinating. It evokes candied grapefruit, cranberries, and an exquisite note of kirsch. The texture on the palate is based on an almost perfect balance between power and finesse, with high-quality tannins. With superb length on the palate, this rosé oscillates between delicacy and vinosity. Drink over the next 3-4 years. Drink 2025-2029.

Column distilled from Perry Pears and cider apples. While Pays d'Auge Calvados typically benefits from extended ageing, Calvados from the Domfrontais region is more approachable young. Add old oak to the mix and the result is a deliciously fruity expression: Brimming with apple tart, ripe pear and orchard cider flavours and balanced by hints of cinnamon and crisp acidity, this is the perfect choice for Summer sipping or long drinks. 40% Alc./Vol.

Vaccelli's Granit Rouge is 100% Sciaccarellu from vines with an average age of 45+ years old. Kirin Fuji Single Grain Japanese Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

"Fuji proves once again that Japan knows its way not just around distilling but also blending. Exceptional stuff." - drinkhacker.com

While most other Japanese distilleries have followed the methods of Scotland, Mt. Fuji Distillery is influenced by major whisk(e)y producers all around the world, which explains this tri-part blend distilled using three different methods, each giving their own unique flavour profile. Although the exact mash-bill isn't stated, the backbone of the spirit is reported to be a 'Canadian style' grain, made with a batch distillation in something similar to a kettle still. That's supported by a Bourbon-style distillate using a doubler, and a third Scotch-style light grain put through a continuous multi-column still. The triptych of profiles comes through in the flavours. Fuji smells a little more malt-like than typical single grain with creamy soda and vanilla enhanced by delicate fruity notes like stewed pears and caramelised apples. It's also fuller, richer and with more texture than you'd anticipate. There are the expected lashings of vanilla wafer, however they hover over a backdrop of poached orchard fruits and warming wood spices, followed by more creamy soda, hints of dried banana and a lovely flourish of American oak giving a Bourbonesque or light rye character to the finish. This release was initially for bars only, but from early 2021 it became available to regular tipplers in Japan and then abroad. A good thing. It's a single grain with terrific mouthfeel, and one that deserves a wide audience. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The elegant nose on this blend of grain whiskies produced by Mount Fuji Distillery has aromas of ground hazelnut, black tea, chestnut flour, mild baking spices, ripe orchard fruits, citrus zest, and elderflower. The palate is packed with orchard fruit, orange, pepper, and chicory, with bitter bark, pepper, and wood spices showing more grain whisky character, and ends with nutty notes and a short finish of cinnamon and oak. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...So many grain whiskeys have a tired quality of doughy breakfast cereal that dominates the palate, but Fuji feels incredibly lively and focused on its apple and pear elements, notes of brown sugar and butterscotch — touched lightly with florals — dominating completely. Much more overtly enjoyable than your typical grain whiskey bottling — even most very well-aged ones — Fuji proves once again that Japan knows its way not just around distilling but also blending. Exceptional stuff. - drinkhacker.com

Notes from the producers... NOSE Aromas of poached pear, rustic fruit tart, Cognac and marron glacé. PALATE Seamless mouthfeel with multi layered flavours of poached pear, orange marmalade, raspberry jam, baking spices, and bitter chocolate. FINISH Mellow with gentle sweetness and pleasant spiciness, smooth with medium length finish and a hint of exotic incense.

Glantenay has been paying very close attention to timing the date of harvest for this bottling, and the results really show in the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots, a medium to full-bodied, velvety wine evocative of cherries, blackberries, rose petals, sweet soil tones and burning embers. 2019 Maison Valette Vire-Clesse Et Pourtant...
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $185. 00

    $2220.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.5%
    Closure: Cork

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. The domain was created in 1977, when Gérard Valette was one of the first in the area to leave the local cooperative and start bottling his own wine. After completing wine training, son Philippe joined in 1990 and then decided to convert the family's vineyards to organic farming, using biodynamic methods since 1992.

The Valette's are known for their specific style, wines raised with thorough lees-contact and without racking. They have remained true to this style of winemaking since the 1950s. It is a sort of family tradition that requires accuracy as well as painstaking detail knowledge of the indigenous yeasts and the wine’s proneness to develop reductive flavours. If the estate's wines through the late 1990s were simply powerful, textural examples of high-quality white Burgundy, the wines being released today belong in a category of their own. Complex and sapid, these are fascinating wines although you should be prepared to find wines that are quite different from any of the Valettes' neighbours. Anyone who appreciates the Jura bottlings of Jean-François Ganevat or the Thomas Pico Chablis wines is likely to love them.

Vire-Clesse Et Pourtant.. hails from plots where the soils contain high levels of limestone lending an extra level of freshness and intensity to the wine. Average age of the vines here is 60 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

A youthful Glenrothes double barelled by Dumangin in their trademark Ratafia cask selection. Disgorged in 2020, No.T-131 yielded 344 bottles at 46% Alc./Vol.

Gilles Dumangin returned to the family Domain in 2000 after studying in London. A small wine merchant, not far from Harrods had introduced him to a Tain L'Hermitage finished single malt. It was love at first taste. Gilles was inspired to create his own delicately tannic 'Ratafias Champenois' (a fortified wine made with Champagne must and Champagne based spirits) using second-fill barrels from the Côtes-du-Rhône Septentrionales (x-Syrah). He now applies the same principles to single cask whiskies - this time with a Champagne twist, using the same barrels that aged his Ratafia Champenois.

The Dumangin whiskies follow in the footsteps of French pioneers like Michel Couvreur - only there's another layer of expertise bought to the table. While Gilles clearly has a 'magic touch' when it comes to selecting and maturing world class singles and grains, he isn't just a buyer and bottler. He's an acclaimed winemaker applying his know-how. Whiskies arrive in Champagne to complete their maturation in 228 litre barriques in the cellars at Chigny-les-Roses. The Ratafia finishing gives them a distinctive signature: a subtle yet delicious, creamy, fruity twist unique to Champagne.

Arran ten year old now comes with a puff of smoke: It's the newly presented Machrie Moor matured for a decade in first-fill bourbon casks, and the third in a series of light to medium peated styles offered by the distillery. Described as a bit of a chameleon that changes in the glass, it is something like a Port Charlotte only with less smoke and more fruit - or perhaps more like a Campbeltowner? The nose delivers what the label suggests - peat, only in a dry, non-confrontational manner that becomes more polite and fruity after air contact. The most likeable thing about this whisky is the twist on the palate. Expecting something peaty, instead you get a delicious fruit-salad; the juiciness of the malt makes for a sweet, succulent finish before leaving you with an oily, warming, brine and pepper tang. Nice coastal vibe. We're heading towards Springbank rather than Laphroaig. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Jura, FRANCE
    $320. 00
    Bottle
    $3840.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune in this collection.

The En Spois plot is at the top of the slope on clay and Triassic blue marls, along with some limestone influence, planted between 1993 and 2000. Given the youth of the vines and the exposed plot, the Vin Jaune from here is often elegant and approachable, and a great introduction to these fantastic single site wines.

Les Bruyères is single south facing Arbois site planted on Triassic clay soils, with a rich vein of blue marl running through it. While the site is one of the warmest Stephane works with, the wines from here tend to maintain a firm backbone of structure and salinity that ensures harmony on the finish.

While the Laval family has been growing vines for four generations, it was not until 1971 that Georges Laval began producing estate-bottled Champagne. Now under the direction of George's son Vincent, this is one of the great under the radar properties in the region. Laval’s vineyard holdings comprise just 2.5 hectares, most in the premier cru village of Cumières. Across the seven parcels the average vine age is over 30 years, with the oldest vines of the estate over 70 years of age. Organic viticulture has been practiced since 1971, and despite the challenges of this approach in Champagne, they are now certified by Ecocert. Laval’s wines are harvested ripe and almost never chaptalized, and fermentation takes place in barrel, with indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled late, usually about ten months after the harvest, and they are neither fined, filtered nor cold-stabilized.

Les Chenes is Vincent Laval's dense and powerful 100% Chardonnay cuvée from a lieu-dit of the same name, made only in exceptional years. After harvesting fully ripe grapes, the wine spends around 10 months in barrel before another 4 years in bottle prior to disgorgement with zero dosage.

Les Hautes Chevres is a tiny selection of old vine Pinot Meunier planted in 1930, 1947, 1965, and 1971. Unfortunately the 1930 parcel needed to be replaced following the 2014 harvest, yet these are still some of the oldest Meunier vines in the area. Situated at the top of the slope within the Cumieres vineyard, this tiny parcel sits on a layer of fine clay over a firm limestone bedrock base, and produces Meunier with a rich and multi-dimensional profile, further heightened as the wine ages in bottle. This micro-cuvée is one of the rarest and most sought after in the region. Bottled with zero dosage.

Vincent produces one of the most singular expressions of Rosé Champagne, very much in the style of red Burgundy with bubbles. A rough split of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are picked as whole bunches and carefully crushed by foot with a healthy amount of skin contact leading to a bold, vibrant red colour. Expect a rich, layered, and unquestionable detailed rosé unlike anything else you will have encountered.

Risky Business has been sourcing prosecco from the King Valley for nearly 10 years. There's an enviable consistency to style. It's seen here from the bright, just-cut green apple and citrus summery scents through to the utterly delicious lemon sorbet crunch and bubbly zing on the palate. And dry ... prosecco looks so good when it's dry and clean-cut.

"...super good! More grasses and herbs, even mosses, green spices, citrus peel… Not sure all that is very 'bourbon', but I really like this development. " - whiskyfun.com

An American with a traditional sweetness that carries on consistently through the dram in the form of fruit notes. The finish reminded the Cadenhead's tasting panel of a piña colada cocktail. Even from a tiny sample, aromas billow from the glass, mixing up tinned peaches with vanilla gobstopper and Bounty bar. Eminently sipable with a nice fruity-oak-corn sweetness, the finish is nutty and riddled with sweet wood shavings followed by late cinnamon and coconut. Doing what any good indie should do, Cadenheads have bottled a whiskey that takes you off the beaten track. Aficionados should have fun comparing it against mainstream styles. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... It's good that those very distinguished people at Cadenhead's would have made it clear that this was ex-bourbon barrel. You never know… Colour: straw. Nose: it's almost as if this was matured in fresh oak for only two or three years and then re-racked in refill. Soft vanillas, brioches and sponge cakes, barley syrup (yes), nougat and popcorn, perhaps tangerines… Mouth: super good! More grasses and herbs, even mosses, green spices, citrus peel… Not sure all that is very 'bourbon', but I really like this development. Goes towards cinnamon and soft peppers then, which was more expected, naturally. Finish: rather long, a tad oakier. Nice green fruits, green plums, rhubarb… Comments: a bourbon that's gone a little towards Scotch, you could almost call it a malty bourbon. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Coconut, strawberry laces, leather. Flavour: Almonds, dark chocolate, pineapple. Finish: Dry. Kiwi fruit, piña colada.

    Fifty/50 Cask Aged Gin (500ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

A gin with a difference, and a claim to be the oldest gin in the world. That's not hard to believe when you learn half of it's aged in casks for twenty years. The spirit was originally sourced by the House of MacDuff, a company run by mother-and-son team, Jane and Iain MacDuff in Renfrew - a small town just outside Glasgow. Back then, the gin category was relatively slow. Being curious distillers they wondered what a spell in oak might achieve. That turned out to be a lengthy experiment indeed. For the first decade, virgin casks infused sweet vanilla, ginger and strong oak flavours. For the second decade, ex whisky barrels were employed. These allowed the wood to slowly impart greater depth, however the juniper dominant note typical of unaged gins subsided. To revive the botanicals, the liquid was blended with fresh London Dry at a ratio of 1-1. Following several experiments, the result captures the best of both worlds: New & old, deep & fresh. It looks like whisky, but the keynotes of gin come through strongly: Lavender potpourri, chamomile tea, distant peppercorns and cough lozenges repeat in a full-throttle attack. The creamy middle is rounded off by suggestions of orange zest, crushed pine needles, lemon chutney and light vanilla. With tongue tingling peppers to match the botanicals and oak, Fifty/50 is no gin for beginners, and more of a Winter treat than a Summer time refresher. Or if you prefer whisky, this may even swing you into another category. Other ingredients include coriander, cassia bark, cinnamon, angelica, orris root, liquorice, lemon and sweet orange peel. Batches are limited to around 2000 bespoke barrel-shaped bottles. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...  because no-one has aged gin for twenty years, what does it taste like? Is it really like nothing I’ve ever tasted before? The answer is: absolutely. Although it looks more whisky than gin, it’s the opposite on the nose. It has that whisky complexity, yet also that hit of juniper and other aromas you associate more with gin. There’s a vanilla sweetness to it as well, with some oakiness and fresh citrus. It definitely makes you think: ‘Wow, what is this?’ On the palate the juniper is less evident, but the vanilla sweetness is emphasised by some caramel flavours too. The citrus is still there as well. On the nose it’s more like a gin, on the palate more like a whisky, and even reminded me of tequila. It’s super-smooth and warming going down, with a sweet aftertaste. So yes, it isn’t like anything I’ve ever tasted before, and it’ll be a long time before I taste anything like it again, I’m sure. - traveldistilled.com

A feminine, middle-weight Highlander with a slightly floral edge. The aromas include poached orchard fruits (apples, pears), whipped cream, cinnamon and oak shavings, all echoed in the mouth. John McDougall is something of an industry legend, consulting to famous names like Aultmore, Glenfiddich, Kilchoman and Springbank. He has been instrumental in the MacDuff family securing whiskies to bottle under their own brand name, ‘Golden Casks'. Previous to that, The House of MacDuff  were primarily dealing with miniatures and ‘micro’ bottles, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of Records for "The Smallest Bottle of Whisky in the World”.  With a customs approved duty free warehouse, they now market their own casks - which is how they met McDougall.  Since then, he's continued to consult, helping to choose stand-out barrels and deciding when to bottle. MacDuff now concentrate on building their own brands rather than working for clients. We were so enamoured with many of their selections, we decided shipping these was obligatory. Like several other indies, they focus on x-Bourbon maturations giving the whiskies a full showing with no interference from secondary finishings. Instead, each distillery’s character is presented in high definition giving you a fabulous range of grains and malts to choose from at direct import prices.

Frederic Burrier and his family own the historic Chateau de Beauregard and the small but equally important Chateau du Clos, both based in Pouilly, along with half ownership of Domaine de la Rochette based in Milly-Lamartine. Frederic is a staunch supporter of the wines of Pouilly, and led the commission into the possibility of premier crus for appellation. Winemaking is very traditional, and while he has tried newer methods and equipment, Frederic prefers the results he gets by crushing the grapes prior to using his Vaslin hydraulic press. As of 2020 vintage, many of the plots worked in Pouilly are now classified as premier cru.

    SCOTLAND

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

The myth of the Selkie originates from the Scottish Northern Isles. Therianthropes who can shape shift from seal to human by shedding their seal pelt, the bottlers felt the Selkie imagery with its 'blend' of man and animal fit the bill well for a blended malt brand. This batch contains a combination of peated Highland malts, predominantly from ex-bourbon casks. The peat is salient enough to conclude that Ardmore must be a key component, however that gives ground to a nutty/fruity Speyside character. At 50% it's one of the heftier examples going around with no shortage of flavour, creamy enough to enjoy straight, although the peppery spices don't give up, and you have to be partial to a bit of wood smoke. The finish unfolds with cocoa and gingerbread, ending on an attractively saline / coastal note. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... blond in colour with some smoke, vanilla & marzipan on the nose. Understated peat with good body and a long satisfying and sweet finish.

Named for the city of Perth in Scotland, the Old Perth blends have a history dating back to the early 20th century when Peter Thompson, a grocer from Perth, started to create his own whiskies which proved to be popular. Eventually, the lights went out for Old Perth in the early 1970s. Almost half a century later, the brand was resurrected by independent bottlers, Morrison & Mackay, and now Morrisons. The range consists of four different expressions, all of which have matured in sherry casks. The latest and oldest to date is this deeply coloured twelve year old. According to the back label, sherry-sweet stewed fruits and spicy orange marmalade give this vibrant blended malt a beautifully balanced flavour with a warm, lasting finish. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The Passion fruit was first discovered in South America, during the colonisation by Spanish missionaries in the 1500s. They noticed the amazing flowers of the fruit in the jungle. Nobody knows exactly why it became known as the Passion fruit. Was it because the crown-like flower reminded people of the thorn bush of Christ's Passion? Or because of its supposed qualities as an aphrodisiac?

Uncompromising on quality, G.E. Massenez is today universally acclaimed for his 'eaux de vie' (fruit brandies) such as wild Rasperry and Williams Pear as well as his crème liqueurs. The company has won many awards at international exhibitions. 20% Alc./Vol.

Co-Founders, Nic Hancock and Nicola Thompson-Hancock are offering a new premium vodka inspired by Australia’s pristine waters, blending coastal minerality with a smooth, creamy finish. Australian-owned, with marketing aimed at female drinkers, unlike most vodkas that are crafted from grain, potatoes or corn, Mother of Pearl employs Pinot Gris grapes from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and South Australia’s Limestone Coast. Fruit is picked late off the vine and distilled through a multi-level process with a unique filtration method that creates less heat on the palate. Its soft, neutral style results in a great base for a wide range of cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Lark Distillery Para 50 Rare Cask Release Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml + 100ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $699. 00
    Bottle
    $8388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

This release of Lark's Rare Cask 50 series, finished in a 50-year-old barrel that once held Seppeltsfield Para Vintage Tawny Port. “The Para Tawny casks were complex but very intense, so to avoid dominating the carefully-curated spirit we slowly finished the whisky in two casks over four batches”, says Lark founder Bill Lark, who went on the describe the result as “...impossibly long and luxurious, perfect for those intimate fireside chats with friends that extend well into the early hours of the morning”.

Each bottle of the PARA50 come with a copper medallion that has been handcrafted from a decommissioned Lark copper pot still, which was also the case with the Rare Casks Series’ first release. Like its predecessor, the PARA50 is complemented by a 100ml bottle of the same whisky, so collectors who still want to sip the rare malt at their leisure don’t actually need to open the 700ml bottle. 900 were produced.

    Christian Drouin XO Calvados (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Other reviews... For their XO product, Drouin incorporates a portion of ex-cognac casks into the usual mix, otherwise dominated by ex-Bordeaux barrels. The youngest spirit in this bottle is eight years old, but it includes some far older stocks as well. The influence of cognac and sherry casks here is almost unmistakable, but adds a welcome aromatic signature. The nutty, saline and sea-breeze character form a nice counterpoint to the dense, vivid, ripe apple component. This has clearly gained depth and complexity with age, but it has not fallen into the trap of becoming too oxidative or overwhelmed by wood. 90 points - distiller.com

Notes from the producers... offers a harmonious nose mixing baked apples, almond and spice hints. The mouth is supple, soft and well developed. Fruity at first it evolves towards vanilla and woodier notes.

Drouin Calvados began rather unintentionally. Christian Drouin Sr., grandfather to the current head of the company, purchased a country house in the Pays d'Auge area of Normandy in 1960. The house sat on a farm with an apple orchard and Drouin Sr. harvested the apples on his estate in hopes of seeing a return. He was disappointed to find that the price for apples was so low that he wouldn't even recoup harvesting expenses, so he held onto his fruit and sought an alternative solution. His friend, Pierre Pivet, had a mobile still and would travel to various farms to distill cider into calvados. He agreed to advise Drouin on pressing his apples into cider and distilling the cider into calvados, teaching him the art from start to finish. Thanks to Pivet, even the earliest bottlings from the company were of a consistent and high quality. For the next twenty years, Drouin dived headfirst into the distillation process, before putting eux-de-vie aside for aging. Ever since, the family business has continued to blossom with his grandson, Guillaume now at the forefront of production and business management.

Bundaberg Master Distillers Collection Solera Rum (700ml)
    Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Winner: Best dark rum at the World Rum Awards 2017.

The crowning masterpiece in the Bundaberg Master Distillers' Collection is also Bundaberg's finest and most intricate rum to date. Made using a complex solera process, it begins with their best reserves, carefully matured in selected rich Port, Bourbon and Sweet Sherry barrels and ends in a rum that can go toe to toe with premium South Americans and Carribeans. Delivering a palate that's rich in age, combined with sweetness and notes of vanilla, fruitcake, butterscotch and oak, more than a few lifetime Bundy fans have declared it the best thing the distillery has ever produced. Comes impressively packaged in a heavyweight, rectangular decanter and premium presentation box. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... For All the gimmicky limited editions and well overpriced rums with little age or pedigree they have finally managed to make one good rum. I was very sceptical when finding out about the world drink awards they had won and purchased a 3 pack of their award winners directly. Containing one mdc, one small batch and the solera. The first 2 would taste fine drowned in cola like every rum they have made to date but then there is the solera. I have multiple rums at twice the price that are nowhere near as good as this. At under 200 aud a bottle this is one to stock up on. A very UN Bundy kind of rum. A smooth sipper, expertly blended no doubt, sweet molasses, vanilla and Christmas pudding. Totally unexpected. A real credit to who ever blended this. It's about as good as it gets. Around the same price as zacapa xo but this has the edge as far as $170+ soleras go. If I blind tasted this I would expect a much higher price. - rumratings.com
