  Semi translucent vibrant ruby red colour with black shaded edges and a light crimson red hue. Fragrant red raspberry and red liquorice scents sail through the nostrils with complimenting notes of cherry, scorched earth and pepper also evident. Rich, power packed and super juicy, the mid weighted palate is engulfed with red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and cherry fruits.   A richer, more opulent rendition of Yalumba’s Signature that has a long and quite sumptuous conclusion.

  A classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz first produced in 1962, Yalumba’s Signature pays homage each vintage to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the culture and traditions of Yalumba. The 2023 vintage’s signatory is Yalumba’s trade marketing manager, Peter Sawrey who has been responsible for writing the last 32 Signature back labels. This year’s release marks the 52nd vintage of Yalumba The Signature.
  From vines with an average age of 23 years the 2023 Signature is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz with maturation taking place in a combination of French barriques and Hungarian hogsheads (22% of which was new oak) for a period of 19 months. Impenetrable inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. A mix of blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils. Vanillin cedar, tobacco, hints of dark chocolate and bay leaf follow on. Rich, opulent and full bodied, the seductive palate is flooded with blackcurrant, liquorice, dark plum and lush blackberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco and bay leaf accents linger across the back half. Velvety yet underlyingly sturdy tannin structure. Deep and powerful it has a long and quite sumptuous conclusion.

  Yalumba's iconic blend sees 55/45% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz with the '23 release. Again, the release impresses with its fruit purity, elegance and cellaring potential. Deep blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruit with underlying layers of brown spice, cedar, tobacco, pencil case, roast meats, dried herbs and black olive tapenade. Beautifully composed on the palate with a firm yet kinetic, fine-grained tannin structure, lacy acidity and a finish that sails on gracefully for ages. A cracking release. Drink by 2055.

  We might be yet to learn who is to be honoured with the 2023 Signature, but whomsoever it is should be well pleased. This is a cracking release, one of their best. An opaque centre with a dark maroon rim, there is still vanillin oak evident on the nose, but it is integrating well. The aromas include notes of dried herbs, black fruits, graphite, licorice, mocha, chocolate, plums and cassis. This is balanced, youthful, offering real persistence and coiled power. The palate sees the move to gorgeous chocolate notes. A wine with serious length, there is much to love here.

  This is the seventh release of Yalumba’s flagship wine, the ‘Caley’ and it’s up there with their best yet. A classic marriage of two noble grape varieties sourced from two of Australia’s greatest wine regions, Coonawarra and Barossa it’s a blend of 74% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Barossa Shiraz. The wine is matured for 18 months in a mix of 21% new French oak barriques with the balance in 1 year and older French oak barriques.

  A seamless blend of Cabernet and Shiraz highlighted by extraordinary length and wonderful finesse.

  Pours with spectacular colour density featuring an inky black heart alongside a deep dark red black hue. Soaring through the olfactory senses is a complex matrix of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry scents interwoven with vanillin cedar, subtle earthy dark chocolate, tobacco, pepper and bay leaf notes. Rich yet gorgeously refined and structured, the mid weighted palate is flooded with red to black currant, liquorice, dark chocolate and ripe mulberry fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and bay leaf infused back drop. Displaying immaculate tannin integration and outstanding power, it concludes long, highly finessed and sophisticated.

  At this viewing (and we are a long way off from this wine's intended release), we are in for a very special wine – Yalumba's flagship, from the excellent 2021 vintage. It is a picture of elegance and fruit power in one package. There is a glass-staining deep crimson colour for starters. The fruit, seemingly reduced to an essence, is all blackberry, cassis, black cherry and dark plum. Hints of deep spice, blackforest cake, licorice, cedar, tobacco pouch, bouquet garni, black olive tapenade, pencil shavings, roast beef, earth, veal glace and dark chocolate. The tannins are powdery, layered and in perfect resolution, the oak sitting simpatico with the deep fruit, the finish stretching out for a considerable length of time. The best Caley release thus far for mine. Drink by 2024.

  It might be suspicion only but one feels that our venerable old Barossa producer, Yalumba, may have felt that, as impressive as its portfolio of wines is, the world did not see them having a release which challenged the Granges and the Hills of Grace and a surprising number of new releases at ridiculously high and arguably undeserved prices. Enter this wine, although it still sits well below how others when we start talking cost, but then that is only to its advantage. They opted for the great Aussie red blend to take it away from the usual single variety rock stars. It is also a blend of regions with the Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and the Shiraz from the Barossa. There have been some absolutely superb releases of this wine over the years but for me, none better than this 2021. It is a superstar. Under cork. Gleaming blood red/maroon, the nose reveals notes of bright cherries, tobacco leaves, spices, well integrated oak, plums, blackberries, aniseed, cassis and beef stock. It is subtle and seductive, generous and plush, offering a fine line of acidity in great length. There are silky tannins on the lingering finish. Superbly focused, this is surely the best Caley to come my way (and I have seen them all). Stonkingly good, if one wishes to get technical. Thirty years with ease. Drink 2026-2056.

  The 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz hails from an excellent year in South Australia. The season was warm but not hot (in fact, it has been described as cool, although I think "mild" and "benign" are more accurate terms) and offered both growers and makers the opportunity to get the best of their vineyards and produce some of the best wines possible. These should be exceptionally long-lived wines. So here, the 2021 The Caley Cabernet Shiraz leads with a nose of deep dark chocolate, dark fruits, mahogany and black olive tapenade. In the mouth, the tannins are both intense and profuse, encasing the fruit at this early stage yet promising many years in the future to come. This is persistent and long, powerful and concentrated. Sealed under Diam and wax. Drink 2026-2051.

  This is not only the greatest wine to ever emerge from the hallowed halls of Yalumba, it is categorically the finest exemplar of the great Australian blend of the modern era, and the equal of the greatest in history. Kevin KG Glastonbury’s relentless fanaticism has fused Coonawarra Cabernet with Barossa shiraz (26%) to perfection, and I use this word very deliberately.
  While I was not alive at the time to have the privilege of tasting it in its youth, it has perhaps not been since Max Schubert’s legendary 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A that this union has been mastered with such breathtaking harmony. Since its inaugural release a decade ago, The Caley has set the standard for refinement in cabernet shiraz, reincarnating the Coonawarra/Barossa blends of Yalumba of a half- century ago to become the first wine to win Matthew Jukes and my The Great Australian Red competition four times with three vintages, each of which I scored 98-99 points. 2021 embraces this profound legacy and takes it further to establish an all-new benchmark. It elevates this distinguished label by effortlessly contrasting greater depth of black fruits, higher lift of violet fragrance, more energetic, cool season acidity and more profound confidence of tannins that are at once finer and more velvety and yet somehow stronger, more rigid and more enduring - the pinnacle of KG’s life work. I have bestowed a perfect score on an Australian table wine only once in the past decade, and The Caley 2021 is every bit deserving. Be sure to be first in line when it is unleashed on 1 May 2026.

  I am infinitely grateful to have creator, creative and creation knowledge of this wine, from its inception to this moment in time. All vintages, all progressions, all inflections and all moments of ‘worry’ have been shared, and so when a wine, and there are few on the planet with this epic consistency of production, is released, the world must pay attention. There is so much class here, it is extraordinary. How would you place this wine if you were an alien landing at our intergalactic hub in search of a refreshing libation? It could only be a wine from the 5263 quadrant of SA, which I am sure an alien could compute faster than most humans. But there is a looming sense of disquiet about this 74% Coonawarra wine, because it has an x-factor that transports into an otherworldly plane that is simply jaw-dropping. My wine mind does all it can to personify every sip I taste and yet, as much as I admire all the James Bonds, Hans Solo, and even, and this might sound somewhat incongruous, the Jackson Lambs of this world, this wine has no earthly human form synonym. It soars, mythical, half-human, half-deity, and it holds back more than it gives, and then releases unfathomable mysteries when you momentarily switch off. It is, in short, epic. I wondered if any wine could eclipse the inaugural 2012 The Caley, and then a handful of them have done just this. 2021 is the most recent to do so, and I am thrilled to bring it to your attention.

  Matured in French oak puncheons for a period of 10 months. Semi translucent ruby red in colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Wonderfully fragrant nose with a bouquet of violet, red to dark cherry and wild strawberry trailed by hints of anise, rhubarb, forest floor and spicy cedar. Light, fresh and supple in its flow, the moreish palate is decorated with red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits. Subtle anise, dried herb, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lie underneath. Polished fine grained tannins with a long savoury, red fruited finish laced with spice.

A pretty wine with its bouquet of strawberry, raspberry, floral notes and cinnamon spice. There's good persistence, too, on the gently mouth-filling palate with supple, fine-grained tannins rounding out a wine to drink now and over the next four to six years. Drink by 2031.

  Sumac and strawberries, paprika and lingonberries. Red fruit is taut and crunches with bursting acidity. A small portion of new oak adds some floral spice, potpourri and rose spray. Some Jarrah wood, cedar and red clay earth tones add further dimension. I find it so hard to fault the Yering Station line for its fruit purity, presence and price point. All is considered and makes for a harmonious drink, now and in the near future. This will show well in another 3-6 years further. Drink with simmered slices of thin pork in a cabbage and mushroom stew. Drink 2026-2032.

  Notes on 1992 Douglas Laing & Co. Old Particular Single Cask Cameronbridge 30 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)

  Of all of Scotland's grain whiskies, we do find that Cameronbridge often surpasses expectations. Even at middle age it's capable of delivering a whisky that's slightly richer and more malt-like than its peers. Thanks to independents, we're occasionally getting access to some great values from what remains an under-appreciated category. Distilled in September of 1992 and matured in a second-fill barrel, this Douglas Laing edition arrives without chill filtration or dilution, at a natural cask strength of 48.2%. The colour looks reasonably deep for a grain, suggesting that they didn't use a completely inactive cask. With good wood and three decades behind it, this promises to be a text-book example.

  Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Shows some early barley sugar sweetness, with dry grains amongst an old book library ambience. Palate: Wonderfully dulcet with a mixed spin of vanilla and citrus, topped by florals... Finish: Catch some warm cocoa ahead of subtle spices, serial cereal and more late vanilla fudge.

  Notes on Kilchoman Small Batch 2023 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

  A Kilchoman matured in specially selected shaved, toasted & re-charred (STR) red wine casks, bottled non-chill filtered at high strength. The combination of 75% Bourbon, 20% red wine and 5% sherry casks results in a classic Kilchoman profile of citrus and peat smoke with layers of red fruits, cinnamon sweetness, and fresh vanilla. Founder, Anthony Wills adds, "...Rather than dominating, Loch Gorm’s oloroso maturation works in harmony with the natural character of Kilchoman.   This will be one of the more interesting Australian Whisky releases for 2026. After lengthy experimentation, Archie Rose have created a 'peated' style. Rather than following the well worn path of traditional Scotch where smoke only touches the grain, this whisky has native Stringybark wood-smoke infused into the barley, the cask and the water. The production process makes for a strong point of difference to previous Aussie distillers who've experimented with native woods for aging. Instead of exploring oak alternatives, a little ingenuity has resulted in an evocative Australian smoked character unlike anything else in the world.

  With some wonderfully sweet grain and rich oak notes at its core, Stringybark smoke ramps up the complexity, not only contributing a dry, cured meat and chimney soot character, but also bringing an added layer of freshness that hints at baked citrus, faint menthol and herbal teas. The palate repeats those notes in a slightly sweeter, more definitively smoked way, with a lingering dry, ashy quality, followed by smoked dark chocolate, more cured meats, warming peppers and a mezcal-like aftertaste. Comparisons with Highland peaters such as Ardmore and Inchmoan are hard to resist, but this beats its own drum - and may well be a world first. 46% Alc./Vol.

  Notes from the producers... Nose: Opens with notes of artisan smoked bacon, campfire, golden syrup-drizzled damper, roasted macadamia and barbeque charred lemon. Another pass reveals royal icing, tinned pineapple and hibiscus. There is a distinctive nuttiness present which is balanced by smoke and the suggestion of salinity. Palate: The palate is well structured with a honeyed sweetness and baked citrus flavours that make wait for a smokiness that builds in intensity towards the expansive finish. The dry, wood scented smoke is laced with jasmine and geranium, as well as salt and cured meats. Finish: The lingering flavour of charred wood is present. A uniquely Australian whisky for lovers of smoke and flavour explorers.

  Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first vineyards planted in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to shiraz - the great tradition of McLaren Vale - and has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.
  Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Intense dark cherry and ripe red currant aromas jump out of the glass followed by some dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco notes. Juicy red currant and ripe cherry fruits flood the mid weighted palate overlaying a red liquorice, dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco back drop. Excellent fruit intensity and flesh with slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity. Long, generously fruited, spice laden finish.

  Such a reliable performer. I probably say something similar most years. Sometimes the well of inspiration runs dry when it comes to my introductions. Bright, crunchy, energetic sort of wine. Red cherry, raspberry, iron filings, some dried herb and almond. It’s medium-bodied, has a light grainy grip to tannin, good varietal flavour, and a lively finish of excellent length. Good stuff. Drink 2025-2032.

  From five vineyards and seven clones, which illustrates the importance of the grape for Coriole, and the region; 11 months in older oak. It’s a regional benchmark for a reason. Medium weighted, as usual, transparent, redolent of cherries, Mediterranean herbs, a dusting of spice and warm earth scents. Reliable may sound condescending, but this is a bottling that never disappoints. Indeed, it consistently overdelivers. It’s another excellent release. Drink by 2029.

Brambly blackberries, mulberries and fresh garden mint adorn the aromas, while in the mouth, the acidity swooshes in and out of each of the flavours, enlivening them and making way for the fine tannins: the carriage upon which the experience rides across the mouth. A modern, concentrated take on the classical Australian blend. Drink by 2037.

  A combination of rums from Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica - hence the name '3 stars'. Some of the rums are unaged, others aged 3 and 12 years, blended and filtered back to clear before being bottled by the French Cognac house, Pierre Ferrand. Light to moderate aromatics yield notes of unripe banana, green olive and peppercorn, becoming more subdued and waxy with aeration. Starts off light and easy in the mouth but crescendos enough by mid palate to gain a point in concentration. Almost a fine grappa-like profile with subtle fruity / unripe banana flavours leading into a mildly creamy, waxy, grassy finish. Concludes pleasantly spicy, crisp and precise. Not the driest on the market but one of the best. 41.2% Alc./Vol.

  Alexandre Gabriel, proprietor of Cognac Ferrand, comments, “…Our desire was to develop a rum that shows character, elegance, complexity and a great finish – the ideal rum for cocktails … beginning with a 3-year aged Trinidad rum, carbon filtered to maintain its white colour and to remove the heavier tannins while preserving the aromatics developed and refined by aging. Un-aged rums from Barbados and Jamaica are blended, along with a 12 year old rum from Jamaica. The Jamaican rum is an expensive ingredient but key to the taste of the overall blend. Trinidad brings elegance and refinement, Barbados brings character and aromatics with fruit notes without being too heavy and Jamaican brings the funk, the touch that makes it a complete product.”

  Summed up as "Fruity, malty and oily" , this Benrinnes brings welcome relief to tasters who've found some of Symington's selections overly sherry-driven. Clearly, the second-fill Pedro Ximenez hogshead has helped to moderate the sweet wine input. Cask #10 filled 345 bottles at 49.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Put it all together and this is quite a bargain for the age statement.

I don't want to condemn intensive sherry cask maturation, but when the sherry finish is so intense that (almost) nothing remains of the distillery character or the harmony of a 30-year-old whisky, then that's not necessarily desirable in my view.   Notes on Glenallachie 12YO... The GlenAllachie have done it again! The 12 Year Old has won the award for World's Best Single Malt at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards, an honour it previously received in 2021 for Batch #4 of its 10 year old Cask Strength release. Billy Walker considers the 12 year old to be the heart of the core range with some of the very best virgin oak, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez casks selected. It is slightly less robust than the ten year old, though just as deeply coloured and easily one of the more flavour-packed 12 year olds going around, opening with notes of chocolate box and Turkish delight followed by a medley of dried fruits, cocoa, clove, honey and vanilla, plus no shortage of concentration on the palate; A saturate of dried fruits and spices, orange oils, citrus blossom, chocolate box and dried apricots combine with fine astringency for excellent sweet-dry balance. Overall, fresher, and with a little more 'breed' than the brawny 10. If you enjoy exuberant sherried styles, then this will be right up your alley. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 92 points

  Notes on Glenallachie 12YO Moscatel Wood Finish... Initially aged for over 8 years in ex-Bourbon barrels and then finished for approximately 42 months in hand-selected Moscatel barriques (a Portuguese sweet dessert wine) imparting floral aromas and a luxuriously smooth texture. It's another decadent, fruit-forward Speysider, typical of GlenAllachie’s celebrated wood-finish lineup. Bottled exclusively for Europe, it's unlikely we'll see this one again! 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

  Other reviews... The Moscatel cask is mainly noticeable in the nose, where it pours out of the glass very sweet and sticky and light fruity (gooseberries, light grapes, star fruit, etc.). The fruit flavors integrate nicely into the light Glenallachie character without overwhelming the whisky. There is a slight spice in the finish, but it is much lighter than many of its distillery siblings. Overall, nice summer whisky with a lot of pressure and well-integrated alcohol. The cask influence is very restrained by Billy Walker standards and therefore somewhat unspectacular. - whiskybase.com

  An old whisky label, revived in 2022 with the release of a 21 year old. The White Heather brand was discontinued in the 1980s as the industry consolidated. It was subsequently acquired by Glenallachie in 2017, along with the MacNair’s Lum Reek Blended Malt brand. Master Blender, Billy Walker has put his own unique spin on White Heather, sourcing single malt and grain whiskies from the Highlands, Islay and Speyside. The new 15 Year Old contains both peated and unpeated malts along with grain whisky, however the malt content is on the higher side at a considerable 47 percent. After time in sherry butts and American oak barrels, the blend was re-racked into Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry puncheons as well as American virgin oak casks for an additional three years. Also notable is the fact that it was bottled at 46% without chill filtration, which is unusual for a blend.

  “This has been a real passion project for me”, says Walker. “It takes me back to my first forays in the industry and allows me to select and blend whiskies from across Scotland in order to achieve the intended flavour profile. I hold a strong belief that interest in the Premium Blend category is growing, and we very much want to be at the forefront of it with White Heather.”

  Other reviews... Billy Walker and gang, when they bought Glenallachie, also got this legendary old brand the Aberlour folks had been taken care of in the 1950s and 1960s. Those old square bottles of White Heather, with their white labels and even when young (5, 8)  were just stunning and up there with the very best blends ever bottled. This new White Heather shelters different whiskies, naturally, but the proportion of malt remains very high (47%). The Northern Highlands are having the upper hand. The whole has been finished for three years – so rather second maturation - in active casks (PX, oloroso, virgin American oak).  Colour: apricot gold. Nose: malty indeed, and rather in the stye of the lovely Hive, with some honey, pancake sauce, even icewine, sweet flowers (buddleia, mullein, white clover…), a little sweet rum, some raisins, triple-sec… and guess what, no obvious grain. But grain's pretty silent anyway, is it not. There's a little Islay inside but I do not get it (while some charming person at the parent company doesn't seem to get it either). Was it Bunnahabhain? Bruichladdich? Mouth: still malty, very classic, on more pancake syrup, butterscotch, millionaire shortbread, vanilla cake, marzipan and macaroons, nougat, beeswax (here we go again)… And just a tiny salty tang that may, or may not, suggest some 'peat'. Finish: medium, rather more coastal indeed. A little ginger, honey, and something a little Orkney-y. Lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: love blends when the grain don't feel at all – and when the woods behaved, which was the case here. Super good.   ...Not having benefitted from tasting it head-to-head with its older brother, I'll carefully state that the White Heather 15 Years sits at an equally high level. And maybe I would even prefer it, but not by enough to actually give it a higher rating. This is a well-balanced, easy sipper without it ever becoming monotonous. - wordsofwhisky.com

  With only 2000 bottles available worldwide, Billy Walker's latest effort is aimed at collectors as well as drinkers. Taking inspiration from a whisky brand which was discontinued in the 1980s as the industry consolidated, White Heather was acquired by Glenallachie in 2017, along with the MacNair’s Lum Reek Blended Malt brand. Walker has put his own unique spin on White Heather, sourcing single malt and grain whiskies from the Highlands, Islay and Speyside. 18 years maturing in a combination of first-fill American barrels, sherry butts and second-fill barrels and hogsheads was followed by three years in a mix of Pedro Ximénez puncheons, Oloroso puncheons and Appalachian Virgin Oak casks to let the flavours marry together and take on additional layers of depth and complexity from the wood. The resulting whisky, which is single malt heavy, presented at 48% and with no added colouring or chill-filtration, perfectly balances gentle peat from the Islay contribution, archetypal Speyside fruity notes, the heather honeyed sweetness of the Highlands, and a rich and rounded foundation from the grain components.

  Commenting on the landmark release, Walker said: “This whisky is particularly close to my heart. Creating this blend took me back almost 50 years to when I started my career at Hiram Walker. It was there I started to learn the art of blending and the specialist skills required to select whiskies that when interfaced with each other ultimately amplified the overall flavour experience. With White Heather, I poured everything I’ve learned on my whisky journey into crafting a truly memorable small batch aged blend that sits proudly alongside even the very best single malts. I wanted to honour the original blend whilst recreating it in a much more premium form with exceptional wood.  It’s a fine balance bringing together the character of such different whiskies and cask types, but I’m incredibly proud to now unveil the end result.” Very limited stocks.
