2021 Leeuwin Estate Art Series ChardonnayMargaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA$155. 00Bottle$1860.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2024-2034)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinFirmly standing at the top of the tree of Australian Chardonnays, Leeuwin Estate have turned out yet another spectacular release from the 2021 vintage. Barrel fermented and matured in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for a period of 11 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tint of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey delicately infused with gun flint engulf the nostrils. Biscuity oak, subtle cashew, citrusy nougat and spice notes add a further dimension of complexity. Beautifully shaped, expansive and refined the palate is layered with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits which overlay a biscuity nougat, subtle dried honey, ginger spice, roast almond and gun flint back drop. Tremendously powerful yet relatively light on its feet it has a fresh silken like feel. Finishes with exceptional length and finesse.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom. The season was a challenging one in Margaret River, defined by the rainfall, which was constant. The temperatures were modest (not cool, as plenty of rain might suggest),and given that the region is so diverse in terms of distances between vineyard areas, this created quite a patchwork of outcomes for producers. On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory—it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Sealed under screw cap.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThere’s always an anticipation when a new vintage arrives. This doesn’t disappoint – it’s archetypal Art Series: powerful, rich and layered with flavour from stone fruit, pink grapefruit and Meyer lemon to a touch of mandarin. The palate builds with creamy lees, oak spice and some phenolics – the oak is superbly integrated, and pure acidity leads this to a persistent finish. Impressive as always. Drink by 2034.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionI seem to have missed tasting the 2020 LEAS Chardonnay, which is kind of disappointing. It’s a blip in my Leeuwin radar, given I’ve tasted every one of them on release since the 1992 vintage. Anyway, teeth gnashing aside, the bottle seems to be lighter these days, which is very good.
Pear, lime, grapefruit, floral too, with a distinct mint/aniseed top note, backed with discreet spicy cinnamon/ginger oak. It’s fresh and lively, quite saline too, flinty and chalky, a honey ginger drink character in the mix, along with a cucumber coolness and biscuit spices, a whole lot of presence and power here, delivered in a kind of understated, but confident way. The finish is very long, and refreshing. Gee, this is good wine. It ripples through the mouth like a flat white stone pitched across a cool lake. That’s an image for you, and I’ll leave you with that. Drink 2025-2040+

Extremely complex and classy on the nose with aromas of lemon peel, flint, nectarines, sea salt and minerals. The palate is tightly wound with high-tension acidity, generous mouthfeel and an underlying power, showing notes of lime curd, mandarin pith, orange blossoms, baking spices and gunsmoke. Very complete and made for the ages. Excellent. Drink or hold. Crown cap.

2022 Mr Riggs Montepulciano d’AdelaideAdelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$24. 99Bottle$299.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2024-2029)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinWhilst still a travelling consultant winemaker, on Ben Riggs’ list of favourite wine regions to visit and work was central and southern Italy. It was there that his love of Montepulciano began, and those memories have inspired him to make this Aussie version from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills. Montepulciano is the name of both a grape variety and a town in Tuscany, Italy, which causes confusion as the two are not actually connected in any way.
Dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Dark to black cherry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils followed by some dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar and scorched earth notes. Rich and full in body, the juicy palate is flush with morello and black cherry, liquorice as well as dark plum fruits. Slightly chewy in its mouthfeel it boasts excellent concentration and textural volume. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and spice elements linger underneath. Ripe, sternly built tannin structure with a long, generously fleshed conclusion.

Dave rebranding his venture Neldner Road. From the outstanding 2021 vintage Dave Powell has hit the bullseye with this entry level release. Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards, the majority located along the region’s North-Western ridge in Marananga and Seppeltsfield with a component also coming from Lyndoch Valley in the Southern Barossa. Fruit parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats before being basket pressed and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 15 months maturation.
Sumptuous, dense and opulently rich, this is Woodcutter’s Shiraz on steroids.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry waft out of the glass and integrate with fennel, smoky vanillin oak and peppered earth notes. Lavishly rich, deeply concentrated and super seductive, the large scaled palate still manages to maintain a deft balance. Completely saturating the mouth is a tidal wave of liquorice, blackberry, black cherry and dark to black plum fruits which carry a thick, dense texture. Notions of scorched earth, vanillin cedar and peppered fennel lie underneath. Boasting outstanding power and a very polished yet sturdy tannin structure it finishes very long and succulent yet slightly robust. The master of seductive Shiraz hasn’t lost his magic touch.

A rich, fleshy Langhorne Creek Shiraz that delivers an abundance of flavour at a miserly price.
Dense midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Lifted dark plum and liquorice aromas are trailed by some spicy vanillin cedar, blackberry and peppered earth notes. Rich, juicy dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits carry a plush feel over a back drop of vanillin oak, scorched earth, blueberry and pepper. An absolute cracker. Deep blood red in colour, this is ripe and alluring. The nose gives up aromas of chocolate, plums, cherries, licorice, soy, beef stock and miso. There really is so much packed in here and yet, everything remains in balance. The wine is seamless with good intensity and silky tannins. Very good length here too, which persists impressively. Will drink well for the next ten to fifteen years and anyone with a case in the cellar in a decade will think themselves to be a most astute wine buyer. Drink 2024-2039.

In the style of previous releases with its distinctive firm, linear structure and cool, leafy, herbals, but showing more depth of flavour and intensity. The 2018 year seems to have been very kind. Old Pulteney 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $89.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%"yesss! Spot on Pulteney character with the malt bristling the taste buds..." 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
Suitably marketed as 'The Maritime Malt’, Pulteney’s sweet and fruity style comes with a lick of salt and sea air. It's one of a small number of coastal distilleries turning out a very distinctive style, further distinguished by its extreme northern location. Owned by a relatively small company without the promotional muscle of the major players, many whisky enthusiasts only 'discovered' Pulteney after Jim Murray named the now discontinued 21 year old World Whisky of the Year, (replaced by the superb 18YO). Choose any age statement and Pulteney promises a solid northerner, frequently matured in x Bourbon where you get the best feel for the distillate, but also suited to sherry when handled with care. Apart from the notable saline character, we often find hints of beeswax and light smoke that give it a Clynelish-like feel.
Established in 1826, for a long time the distillery was only accessible by sea. Barley was brought in by boat, the whisky shipped out and many of the distillery workers were also employed as fishermen. The herring fishing industry is no longer part of daily life in Wick, but the heritage of the region is referenced in the packaging of Old Pulteney, the labels incorporating the depiction of a traditional Wick herring drifter.
The twelve year old presents a pale gold colour in the glass and a minor sulphur note is evident beneath the light, salty, peppery malt that leaves one with an overall impression similar to fino or manzanilla sherry; it sweetens slightly with aeration releasing hints of fruit. The medium dry, biscuity palate has a pleasantly spicy burst - over all, dry and saline. The finish is crisp and fresh with delicate bready notes followed by a late coastal tang. In the spectrum of single malts, this belongs at the aperitif end, and is all the more refreshing for its individuality. 40% Alc./Vol. [2007 batch tasted].
Other reviews... Remarkably consistent.... The salt continues to ensure lustre, though this bottling has a little extra - and welcome - barley gristiness. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
...The only survivor from Old Pulteney’s core range shake-up of 2018, this has been matured in first and second-fill bourbon casks. The nose is delicate, with almonds, honey, and floral notes. Malt and toffee on the palate, with spicy oak and a hint of brine. The medium-length finish is nutty, with wood spices. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Winter 2018)

2023 Pierro L.T.C.Margaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA$32. 99Bottle$395.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 3 Years (2024-2027)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinIn 1979 Mike Peterkin produced Australia’s first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Working at Cullen’s at the time, the wine went on to win a trophy at the Perth Royal Show. He never claimed any originality for the idea, he simply borrowed it from the French. In 1980 he was so convinced of the blend’s potential in Margaret River he devoted a third of the Pierro plantings to the varieties.
The 2023 L.T.C. is made up of 50% Semillon, 43% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Chardonnay. Twenty five percent of the blend was fermented and matured in new and one & two year-old French oak barrels for a period of 2-3 months with the balance fermented and matured in stainless steel.
Brilliant water like colour with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Intense passionfruit, lime and green apple scents burst out of the glass trailed by some delicate white peach and subtle grassy notes. Scrumptious passionfruit, green apple, lime and fleshy white peach fruits are underscored by mouth watering acidity. Fantastic concentration, drive and textural volume with delicate herbaceous grassy characters and zingy minerals flowing through the back half. Finishes dry and crisp with a long zippy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

50/43/7% semillon/sauvignon blanc/chardonnay. There’s a lot of energy and drive to this blend – it works so well. Enticing with its lemon-lime flavours, lemon zest and freshly sliced ginger/galangal. Some texture across the otherwise linear palate, electrifying acidity seals the deal.

It’s Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, with a little touch of Chardonnay.Lime, lime rind, white pepper, aniseed, sweet snapped snow pea, some cream and spice. It’s bright, pops with mixed citrus of some sweetness and intensity, has some flinty texture, a kiss of dried herbs, a subtle saline character, and finishes long and crisp. Such a good year for white varieties and this consistently first-rate wine has delivered again, but with the addition of even more natural crunchy vibrant fruit thanks to the vintage. The palate is more intense than previous vintages but still with that structure and precision that comes with the approach of using a combination of semillon and sauvignon, with a light touch of chardonnay. This really is a terrific wine. A cracker.

Redbreast 18 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)County Cork, IRELANDReduced from $350.00$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 46%"...a silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered." - drinkhacker.com
Bridging the gap between the distillery's older and younger offerings, Redbreast 18 Year Old is a novel and welcome addition to the range. While ex-bourbon casks are included, this new expression relies mostly on first-fill oloroso casks, also sporting whiskeys aged in barrels that previously held cream sherry - a first for the brand. Says Master Blender, Ian McCabe, "By incorporating cream sherry casks sourced from the Antonio Páez Lobato cooperage, we’ve created a whiskey that boasts a rich profile of dark chocolate, blackcurrants and hazelnuts.” It contrasts against its nearest neighbour, the 15-year-old, which he describes as more savoury and herbaceous. Also notable is the addition of liquid aged in Ruby Port, a component that was until now used exclusively in the top-of-the-line 27-year-old and the even rarer Dream Cask. By all reports, Redbreast 18 year old is a cracker that ups the richness on others in the line up, making for a superb dessert whiskey. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The nose is luxuriously appealing, with milk chocolate, maraschino cherry, bramble, black currant, Nutella, baked citrus, apricot, mango, oak spices, toasted nuts, and cinnamon bark. Smooth and polished on the palate, the complex cask regime serves up flavors of milk chocolate, licorice, black grape, sultana, date, ginger root, currants, and clove. The finish serves up dried fruit and licorice, with hints of leather and coffee bean. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...The nose is rich and expressive and clearly inspired by those newer cask types. Top notes of strawberry shortcake, sugared almonds, and black cherry are airy but still decadent, acquiring an almost creamy texture with time in the glass. The aroma is elevated further by undertones of vanilla bean and crème brulee with fresh berries. A hint of peppery pot still spice adds some energy to an otherwise silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered. The palate follows a similar theme, lush and syrupy initially with cherry cordial and blackberry jam, veering almost too far into the dessert dram lane. Things course correct however on the midpalate with more traditional Redbreast notes of white pepper, breakfast cereal, banana pudding, and candy apple before finding remarkable harmony on a long, warm finish accented with ripe red berries, vanilla cream, and candied ginger. Truly impressive. Without having sampled the 27-year-old, I have to say this is my favorite Redbreast to date. - drinkhacker.com

The name of this wine is taken from Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind who is often depicted as a horse. The vineyards of the Barossa are regularly buffeted by cooling Westerly winds creating an ideal temperature range in which to slowly ripen Shiraz.
The 2021 Zephyrus is a blend of 10 different Shiraz parcels located throughout a wide range of vineyard sites within the cooler climate Eden Valley (46%) and warmer Barossa Valley (54%) regions. The vines are aged between 25-60 years old. Each parcel of fruit was fermented with varying levels of whole-bunch fruit clusters (between 10% to 35%). Maturation took place in a mix of new (35%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads for a period of 12 months.Gorgeously textured, powerful and richly fruited this is a textbook example modern styled Barossa Shiraz.

The 2021 Zephyrus Shiraz is a brilliant wine. Luscious tannins frame a bounty of black and purple fruit in the mouth, peppering it with coal dust/graphite/black tea and black olive tapenade. Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThis is very good, for those after quality Barossa. 2021, an unimpeachable vintage by virtue of its cooler mien, refined tannins and palpable natural degrees of freshness. While the winemaking hand is evident, with smoky barrel fermentation notes, mocha oak and a clutch of floral reduction, the flowing fruit is pure and impressive. The structural attributes are well applied, integrated and serving to compress the inherent largesse of Barossa into a nourishing, drinkable whole. A class act. Drinkable now, but best after 2027.
