  The new Longrow 100 Proofs succeed the Longrow Red series. Released in annual batches, we have just received Batch No.1 from 2025. Wine finishes and Longrow have always been provocative and divisive amongst Springbank fans. It seems the distillery has taken note. Aged for four years in refill bourbon oak and finished for two years in refill Pinot Noir barrels, here, the auburn tinge often associated with the 'Red' series is almost indiscernible, the wine influence kept to a minimum due to second-fill casks. Regardless of whether or not you like the style, because this is 'Batch One', it probably means it won't be on the shelves for long. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

  Other reviews... The Longrow Red releases had both fans and haters. I wouldn’t count myself amongst either camp, but I’ve tried a few that I really liked, even though I generally don’t seek out wine matured single malts. I certainly tend to agree with Longrow in general, so there’s no good reason why the new Longrow 100 Proof shouldn’t suit me. Not too bad actually, although it might not be the most accessible whisky I've tried. This signifies a new chapter for Longrow, and it's certainly not a bad start. Yet, it's not entirely up to Springbank's standards either, is it? Longrow Red has always been a bit hit and miss.   ...This is in fact the follow-up to the well-known ‘Red’ series which, generally speaking, had left us rather cold, as the combination of peat and red wine often evoked something like coffee and mustard mixed together – the sort of concoction we used to dish out to freshers when I was a boy scout. However, in this case, although it is pinot noir, the fact that it’s second fill does offer some reassurance. Let’s see… Colour: pale gold (victory!) Nose: no cherries, no blackcurrants, no raspberries, no woodland mushrooms, no hare pâté, and no Russian leather. Hurrah! This is more of a clean, taut Longrow, very much in the vein of those solid NAS entry-level bottlings, which are always rather good – something like a Campbeltown mojito. Lemon, seaweed, smoke, beach sand and fresh garden mint, along with a faint yeasty note (which likely betrays its youth). With water: amaretti and wood-fired white bread. Virgin wool and a touch of chalk in the background. Mouth (neat): some hints of cherry-stem herbal tea but well removed from the lees of chambertin or Bollinger. More pepper, lemon zest, a dash of tarragon, grapefruit (not even the pink kind!) With water: tinned sardines appear, along with lemon and even a splash of olive oil. Finish: fairly long, and highly maritime. One might as well be standing on a fishing quay. Comments: a great success, with the pinot noir element now little more than an anecdote.   Notes from the producers... Nose: The peat smoke influence presents in medicinal, tcp notes, along with notes of redcurrants on the nose. Palate: Softer on the palate, the peat smoke has a more earthy, musty element now, with notes of creme brulee, vanilla and almonds. Finish: Red cola cubes, strawberry laces and marzipan are at the forefront of the smoky Longrow finish. Although the origins of 100° proof are often contested, it is widely agreed to have hailed from Britain in the 17th century when excise taxes were based on alcohol strength, thus “proof” of strength became a requirement. The process for testing and proving strength involved pouring the spirit on to gunpowder and subsequently taking a flame to the gunpowder, with an explosion indicating that the spirit was “over proof”, failure to ignite indicating that it was “under proof”, and a steady flame burning indicating the spirit was “100 proof”. The 19th century saw the development of a new, scientific calculation of strength devised by Bartholomew Sikes, who measured specific gravity of spirit and defined 100 proof strength as 4/7 alcohol purity, or 57.1% ABV. Since the USA proof system works differently, proof is considered double the ABV, or 50%. This whisky is therefore known as 114 proof in the US market.

The small batch expression was matured to perfection at Glenallachie in a combination of Oloroso sherry, red wine and virgin oak casks sourced from around the globe.   This great entry level Tempranillo is produced by Fontana Bodegas & Viñedos, a leading producer of high-altitude vineyards in Castile, Central Spain.
  Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. A mix of dark to black cherry and liquorice aromas are delivered with plenty of aromatic lift followed by some dried herb, vanillin spice and scorched earth notes. Juicy morello and black cherry fruits combine with some liquorice to flood the mid weighted palate. Scorched earth and spicy dried herb elements lie beneath. Slightly chewy mouth feel with ripe, sturdily built tannins. Long well fleshed conclusion.

  From a producer who specialises in sourcing Shiraz and Grenache from old vine single vineyards, this Shiraz comes from a special plot in McLaren Flat planted in 1952. Maturation took place in French oak puncheons for a period of 24 months and only the best barrels were selected for the final wine.

  Rich, seductive and plush, this is old vine McLaren Vale Shiraz at it’s finest.

  Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas waft out of the glass followed by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and super plush, the full bodied palate is overwhelmed with opulent blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate fruits.   This is the estate’s Reserve Riesling crafted from dry grown old vines (80+ years old). 2025 was one of the driest, warmest, and earliest vintages that the Clare Valley has ever seen resulting in low yields but exceptional fruit quality.

  Tense and zippy with an electrifying line of acidity sculpting the long driving finish.

  Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinge to the edges. Intensely scented, the nose offers up lime juice and lemon aromas which are complimented by green apple, chalky talc and slatey mineral like notes. Racy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits are sculptured by a line of electrifying acidity. Chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral elements extend across the back half. Superb drive finishing long, tense and zippy.

  Another superb Clare Valley Riesling from the Watervale sub-region, the fruit comes from a dry grown vineyard with vines in excess of eighty years of age. 100% free run juice. This is exceptional value. The very gentlest pale lemon colour, the wine offers a gorgeous nose, wonderfully aromatic, with lime blossoms, spices, white jasmine, river stones, florals and a line of minerally support. Beautifully crafted with excellent length, there is bright, zesty acidity running the full length. Finely balanced, the wine will provide pleasure for at least the next fifteen years. Drink 2026-2041.

  The wine exhibits precision and excellent clarity, presenting aromas of crisp apple, green rockmelon, lime zest, and lemon pith, complemented by a hint of floral notes. On the palate, it is brilliantly focused, showing outstanding fruit purity and balance, and is beautifully structured, with a complex mouthfeel and delicate texture. The finish is taut and linear, demonstrating superb composition and refinement, and is impressively long. At its best: 2029 to 2042.

  Ridiculous value! Can I leave the review at that? I had to do a double take when I saw the RRP - wow!  An articulate and expressive wine, this **** take on the classic Australian claret blend is a showstopper. It's a wine you just want to hang out with, such is its approachability and plentiful fruit. The consistency across the range of **** Wines I have seen of late speaks highly of its producer - bravo. And this super blend possesses that Scott Boland line and length reliability and magic.
  Dark plums, black currants and a touch of mint from the small addition of Cabernet lie in the shadow of dark berries, plums and chocolate nibs. It's not a showy wine, yet it walks with charisma and a calming presence. A smattering of dried herbs and fine tannins adds a moreish factor on close coupled with that persistent finish. Great stuff and well played. Run to this.

  The old Barossa reds were not the blockbuster monsters which are so popular today but rather, sought out a path of drinkability, while never sacrificing flavour. This is a welcome return to the past. There is 15% Cabernet Sauvignon included in the blend, which underwent a two week ferment with wild yeasts. Maturation was in a range of formats with 10% being new French oak. The fruit came from a range of Barossa sub-regions – Bethany, Greenock, Nuriootpa and Krondorf. 1,000 cases. Mauve/magenta in colour, the nose offers notes of blackberries, herbs, plums, mulberries, chocolate, coffee beans and mocha. A lingering finish with sleek tannins ties things together. Good focus here, and fine balance. This is indeed a more elegant style, but it lacks absolutely nothing in flavour. Apparently, Alex must have recently won Gold Lotto. Otherwise, why on earth would he be giving this away at such an amazingly cheap price.

  From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
  Named in honour of the family’s matriarch, this plush Shiraz was matured in a mix of 25% new French, 5% new American and 70% seasoned oak hogsheads for a period of 16 months.

  Oozing with succulence, this rich, seductive McLaren Vale Shiraz is a compelling buy at close to half it’s normal price.

  Dense inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of liquorice, blackberry and dark plum engulf the nostrils complimented by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, plush and seductive, the full, weighty palate is swamped with liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruits that are oozing with succulence. Spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and traces of peppered fennel also chime in. Boasting abundant power and a nicely built tannin structure that has a velvety feel, it finishes long and opulent.

  Named after the matriarch of the *** family, the wine hails from the south-western district of McLaren Vale where much of the *** fruit grows. This is a more demure expression than other Shiraz in the family portfolio, the fruit notes dark blue in tone with subtle vanillin oak integrated now after 20 months maturation in 10% new French and 5% new American barrels. Despite its depths, the palate is quite lively, acidity fresh and flavoursome with its spot on fruit energy, tannins prominent yet balanced with the overall weight of the wine. Most enjoyable.

  Other reviews... This baby was bottled last December and released in 2025. The barley, of course floor-malted at Springbank, came from High Ranachan farm, just down the road from the Wee Toon. One could hardly get more local than this. Colour: gold. Nose: oh lovely! At once a little ‘dirtier’ and more lemony than the 10 year old many of us adore, quite marked by paraffin, boot polish, pot ale… one could almost describe it as ‘a trifle feinty’ with a slightly soapy edge. But Springbank may well be the only malt that’s actually enhanced by these tiny soapy notes, if you see what I mean. Also fresh almonds and walnuts galore. With water: paint and ‘a Saturday morning at Ikea’. Or perhaps ‘a fresh parcel from Temu’. Mouth (neat): an outburst of pink and green peppercorns, plus an avalanche of citrus. The usual greasy and coastal elements are very much present too. With water: fewer developments this time, and one gets the impression that youth might be a slight drawback here. Finish: same feeling, perhaps a tad too rustic at this stage. Ginger ale, porridge, ink, pepper. Comments: just spotted it’s bere barley. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

  Springbank's twelve year old cask strength edition has been on the market for about twelve years. Releases have not always been to schedule. In some years, just one bottling was offered. Due to its growing popularity, Springbank has settled on two annual releases. The breakdown of this year's cask regime is 60% Bourbon, 35% Sherry and 5% Rum (the same as the 26th release). Reportedly bottled in February 2025. 55.9% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

  ...The balance is absolutely spot on here. It’s sweet initially, but it’s quickly balanced by savoury, bitter and smoky notes. Despite being only 35% sherry it is a strong influence to the overall blend of casks, with the rum perhaps adding some of the sweetness I’m enjoying on the palate. There’s plenty of complexity and I feel I could list note after note given long enough to bore you further.   Lightly peated and distilled 2.5 times, the tenner is the perfect introduction to the Springbank range - indeed, some consider it one of the highlights. The 2025 edition is matured in a combination of 60% bourbon and 40% sherry casks. Hyped, and for good reason, it's detailed, textural and flavoursome from the first sip through to the sweet, salty finish. It'll leave you wondering how so much complexity can be achieved at just 10 years old! 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

  Notes from the producers... [2025 release] Nose: A vibrant cereal note introduces our flagship Springbank dram, along with notes of gooseberries, mango, vanilla pods, grapes and honeycomb. Palate: The fruit and cereal notes carry through to the palate in hints of oatmeal, malted barley and orange pulp. Heather honey, hard toffee, nutmeg and cinnamon notes develop. Finish: A characteristic sea salt note rounds off this dram.

  Other reviews... [+/- 2024 release] Colour: white wine. Nose: I get the impression that SB 10 is becoming increasingly earthy, dirty, laden with soot, basalt, oyster shells, slightly rancid olive oil, mustard, slags, and various yeasts—everything we love, though it’s perhaps not quite to your new neighbour’s taste, just to be clear. SB 10 will never replace a good, easy Champagne blanc de blancs (not entirely sure about that last remark, S.). Mouth: austere, intensely saline, peppery, even dirtier on the palate, with striking bitterness and that unmistakable oily texture. Grilled aubergines come close, before lemon peel and a generous glass of fino sherry ride to the rescue. And it’s not the first time one gets the impression they’ve poured a bit of Longrow into the vatting tank. Finish: long, with that wonderfully discordant sensation of an oily yet razor-sharp malt. The aftertaste is saline, peppery, mezcal-like, and lemony. Comments: perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after.   Fourteen years old, matured in an Oloroso hogshead, and it's dark. Very dark. That's something we expect from Billy Walker. It looks like a sherry bomb with a fine provenance. The bonus is the direct import price. Historically these beauties have retailed in Australia for well over $300. For this edition, 338 bottles were decanted from a single cask at 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

  Notes from the producers... Aromas of raisin buttercream, mocha and toffee are followed by heather honey, baked orange and cinnamon, with ginger and muscovado sugar. On the palate you’ll find heather honey, baked spiced orange and winter truffle, followed by fig jam, dried red berries and caramelised muscovado sugar.

  Glenallachie have emerged with new energy since industry legend, Billy Walker took the helm in 2018. It's a distillate that's hugely flavoursome. Add sherry barrels to the mix and you're in for one of Speyside's biggest whisky experiences - "Andre the giant’ big", as one indie bottler described them. Indeed, possibly only Glenallachie (and a handful of others) could pull off a sherried whisky that tastes about as good as an eleven year old could possibly get. 

  Single Cask #696 was drawn from a Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry puncheon in 2025 yielding 356 bottles at a natural strength. It's one of two single casks imported direct from the distillery, so no wholesaler margins are in the equation - hence the remarkable pricing (normally this would be closer to $250 in Australia). Relationships with distilleries can be fickle, which means the next single cask offering could be via an 'official importer' (read much higher prices).   Notes from the producers...  lashings of molasses, muscovado sugar and dark chocolate. Brandy-soaked plums and spiced orange come through with a signature heather honey and mocha note, lingering on a distinctly savoury hint of black truffle to finish.

  The 2022 vintage marks 50 years of Wirra Wirra Church Block, the first vintage being produced back in 1972. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Shiraz and 7% Merlot matured for 12 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels.
  Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Blossoming from the glass are attractive scents of red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, earth and spice notes. Rich red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits meld into a vanillin cedar, earth, dried herb and spice back drop. Boasting excellent intensity and a seamlessly integrated fine grained tannin structure it finishes long and refined. One of the best Church Block’s for quite some time.

  A vintage that marks an incoming winemaker and a culling of lesser quality fruit. Cabernet and shiraz, the Aussie archetype. Consummate, medium-bodied and savory, with better tannin management than what I recall of past vintages. Bay leaves, currants and iodine, with licorice tannins serving as gentle directives to good, supple length. An everyday claret for the sophisticate, with a strong maritime feel. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

  Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) Shiraz (42%) Merlot (7%).
  This release of Wirra Wirra Church Block is on song and in form. It has plenty of flesh and fruit but it’s also firm and dry. It tastes of boysenberry, redcurrant, saltbush and dried herbs, with a gently ferrous-like element running throughout. It’s lovely to drink; solid but supple. Drink 2024-2029+
