Johnnie Walker's selection of long closed "ghost" distilleries continue to feature in a series of limited edition Blue Label bottlings. The fifth in the line up includes dwindling reserves from Port Dundas, which shipped its distinct Scotch from Glasgow canals to the world for nearly 200 years. Cambus and Brora are also in the mix, as well as rare whiskies like Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie. The latter add spiced apple notes alongside the aromas of peaches and dark berries from Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk.

Built in Glasgow in 1811 at the highest point in the city’s rich commercial history, the historic Port Dundas distillery closed in 2010 after Diageo moved the majority of its grain whisky production to Cameronbridge. It traditionally contributed to blends, including Bell's, Black & White, Haig, J&B, Johnnie Walker, Vat 69 and White Horse. Slowly but surely prices are increasing as awareness of its limited nature and generally good to excellent quality gains ground.

Johnnie Walker XR 21 YO is an exclusive blend inspired by the handwritten notes of Sir Alexander Walker, the grandson of founder Johnnie Walker. Sourced from the exclusive reserve of aged casks, including those of the now silent Brora distillery, the whisky has been allowed to age for twenty-one years, achieving a smooth, deep blend - the depth and intensity of aged oak, the subtle notes of vanilla, the sweet hint of golden honey and a very smooth finish.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Sydney 2220 Cities of the Future Limited Edition Design Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml)
    SCOTLAND

    $4200.00 Dozen

Reflecting on the brand's own 200-year journey, the Johnnie Walker marketing team are now gazing ahead to the next two centuries by launching a collection that reimagines how some of the world's leading cities will look in the future. This glimpse into the year 2220 brings us into a space where well known cityscapes and landmarks appear alongside incredible feats of geo-engineering, A.I empowerment and physics defying architecture. Featured cities include London, Hainan, Taipei, Mexico City, Seoul, Bangkok, Berlin, Singapore, Mars and, of course, our very own Sydney. Each design was created in collaboration with London-based digital artist and creative powerhouse, Luke Halls.

His illustration of 23rd century Sydney embodies the theme of geo-engineered cities, envisioning an explosion of tropical and exotic plant cultivation that has created stunning floating garden islands in the harbour – gigantic exotic plants and trees provide both an unmissable tourist attraction and act as the lungs of the city, keeping its air clean and pure. Its skyline of familiar and new architecture is a green oasis with living walls and rooftop gardens. A truly clean city, all of Sydney’s power comes from a combination of hydro and solar energy capture. As ever, the harbour and surrounding waters are filled with water taxis and hyper light sailing boats which dart through the waves. In order to augment the experience, you can be further transported into the world of 2220 by scanning the front of the bottle with your smartphone. 40% Alc./Vol.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml) - First Edition
    SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00

Given the contents in the bottle, this is undoubtedly one of the more collectible whisky releases EVER from Johnnie Walker.

Brora, a long gone distillery whose few remaining casks occassionally appear in Diageo’s annual Special Release series has become a highly coveted (and expensive) whisky. This release marks the first edition in the Ghost and Rare series, "crafted using irreplaceable malts from ‘ghost’ distilleries that have long since closed, together with other rare malt and grain scotch.”

Created by Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge, this composition includes malt and grain whiskies from eight distilleries, three of which are closed. In addition to the aforementioned Brora, the other two closed distilleries included are Pittyvaich and Cambus, the remainder being the still active Clynelish, Royal Lochnagar, Glenkinchie, Glenlossie and Cameronbridge distillieries. Bottled at 46% ABV, it comes with strong praise from several sources, which makes sense given its provenence. Very collectable.

Other reviews... This is much more muscular than the regular, un-haunted Blue Label. It delivers a multitude of flavors—butter toffee, sweet smoke, citrus peel, and dry spices—tantalizingly peeling off layer after layer, building a slow crescendo to a peak of spices and bitter citrus. Mouth drawing with caramel, apple, pear, and sherbet, a mid-palate of zesty orange and baking spices before topping out with bitter peels, grapefruit, smoke, and sour hard candy.

Released to commemorate 100 years of the Black Label.
Black Label was first introduced in 1908 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Label's success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals.
It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.

To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky. 40% Alc./Vol.

New for 2018, but not scheduled for release in Australia is this new JW expression, inspired by the iconic Black Label. It's No.7 in the experimental series, and set exclusively for Travel Retail. The 12-year-old blend is described as "a smooth-sipping dark whisky with notes of vanilla and smoke, raisins and a warming finish of dark chocolate". Composed of whiskies from Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill distilleries, among others and finished in former Sherry casks for up to nine months, it was a collaborative effort between whisky maker, Aimée Gibson and Johnnie Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge.

"Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of bold experiments that push the boundaries in flavour," said Gibson. "Taking inspiration from the element of Sherry cask maturation in Johnnie Walker Black Label, I was intrigued by the rich and fruity element it brought to the blend. The outcome has been extraordinary."

With previous bottlings including wine and rum cask finishes, and even an Espresso Roast expression, Blenders’ Batch whiskies are the result of over a hundred ongoing experiments. At this price you can afford to buy one to collect and another to drink - perfect on its own or mixed with ginger ale. 40% Alc./Vol.

With Cardhu single malt at the heart of the blend, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge has used whiskies matured for at least ten years in first-fill American Oak casks to create this latest expression. He finished the Scotch in ex-rye whiskey casks, creating a complex new whisky with creamy vanilla notes transitioning to a spicier finish.

“I believe that whisky is ever evolving and experimental in nature and I am pleased to present the first Rye Cask finished Blended Scotch Whisky” said Master Blender Jim Beveridge. “Johnnie Walker Select Casks is a unique style of Scotch that blends the flavour characteristics of bourbon and rye with some of the classic signature notes and smoothness of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky.

A big and quite rare format of the JW classic from earlier times, bottled at 43% (current material is 40%. The man is also walking in the opposite direction on the label compared to the new packaging). We've included the review from the late Michael Jackson, which might be more indicative of what's inside than recent reviews of the 12. One bottle only to sell. Note: minor markings and ware to the carton, otherwise excellent condition.

Up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu.

Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky? Was Dizzy Gillespie a great musician? 90 points -Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

If you've been a little underwhelmed by Johnny Blue of late, this might persuade you to revisit the brand: A super limited natural strength bottling of the world famous super blend. This has been a game changer for more than a few 'malt-only' devotees, however, it's only ever been scheduled for Travel Retail. Named "Blue Label 'The Casks Edition'", it's blended from a small selection of their finest casks that were hand picked by Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge. He comments, “Only one in ten thousand of our casks have sufficient character for Blue Label and in creating this special edition we really wanted to showcase the incredible flavours that come from the casks themselves”.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold with considerable legs. Patience is key here as this gradually unfolds over 5-10 minutes, developing from a shy and slightly off-key opening , to toasty grains, smoked almonds, dusty cocoa and soft whispers of smouldering, earthy peat. The later stages offer up dried fig, poached pear and manuka honey plus added sweet spice. So poised and softly spoken you would never believe the ABV.This is light on its feet, yet densely packed and almost impossibly wound up with orchard fruits, honeyed cereals and smoke in such a seamless way that it's difficult to identify individual flavours. Concludes with a delicate earthy, peaty tang. Subtle but long. A little water broadens the profile and expands the fruity-cereal aspect. 55.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... You don't mess with the Johnnie Walker brand name casually, so we expect greatness, and boy, do we get it here. This has a dusty, smoky nose with dried apricot and grape, and the whisky is gossamer-soft on the palate, with sweet pear and honey evolving on top of an oaky rich heart before a tidal wave of pepper and peat, and a delightful spice smoke and oak conclusion. Magnificent. 94 points

Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Quite frail by JW standards with low key smoke and subdued fruit cake, vanilla and tea biscuit aromas; doesn't really budge after ample air contact. $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Tasting note: A likeable blend that retains a good degree of Ben Nevis' character. Straight up: oily, fruity and satisfying; with water, the grains vie for lead position and it loses a bit of its initial charm. Aged for 12 years in ex- bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-wine casks, expect the malt content to be fairly high. 40% Alc./Vol.

    SCOTLAND

    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%
The first edition of North Star’s 20 Year Old ‘Spica’ is a cask strength grain and malt blend named after part of the constellation of Virgo, the 16th brightest star in the sky. Distilled in 1997 and matured in both European and American oak barrels, 1000 bottles are available world wide. Sold out in the UK, and no wonder - it's incredibly affordable for its age. We have a small allocation.

Tasting note: Deep burnished copper / autumn leaf brown. Looks like a sherry bomb. Initial inhalations are slightly prickly, developing hints of roasted nuts, fruit cake, orange zest, pepper, raw sugar and vanilla (a little like well aged rum). Slightly lean and leathery on entry. Warm and spiced up delivery is dryish with restrained sherry input and a touch of sulphur through the aftertaste - a bit like an 'old fashioned' sherry style. So concentrated and spirity, this feels like a much higher strength. Best with water. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Colour: amber. Nose: This feels like rather a high malt content with these nice notes of Christmas cake, apple compote, liquorice and prune jelly. Also some figs, mulling spice and celery salt. Some greener apple and cider notes come in time along with some sharper wood spices. Mouth: the grain is a little more lively here but there’s still a richness and a breadiness which gives a nice sense of roundness and texture. Some oatmeal flapjack, orange marmalade and limoncello. Also some rather biting spiciness, rye bread and cedar wood. Good. Finish: Medium length, with some grainy bite, notes of blood orange, mustard powder and a touch of aniseed. Comments: A simple but perfectly pleasing thing to sip if and when winter ever returns. I liked the roundness that the sherry influence brought to proceedings. 84 points - whisky-fun.com

North Star Spica 29 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.5%
Tasting note: [15ml sample] Independent bottlers, North Star are renowned for offering big age statements at modest price tags. Another incredible buy, this deeply coloured, three-decades-old blend smells like it's almost dripping in sherry (PX?), air time accentuating dates, fruity dark chocolate, pipe tobacco and trace sulphur. Less apparent wine input on the palate, but the delivery is everything you'd expect from a middle ager of this ilk. Malt-heavy with no shortage of richness (dark chocolate / dried fruits) and beautiful balance, with a vibrancy, lightness and length on the finish that suggests it's been bottled at ideal maturity. Non chill filtered. 45.5% Alc./Vol. 1000 bottles worldwide.

Other reviews... Colour: gold. Nose: that’s right, a blend. Nice maltiness, breads, cakes, ripe fruits, old wine cellar, potpourri, liquorice, cherries, sweet mushrooms… It hasn’t got the higher definition of a good single malt, but it’s got a good complexity and I’m not sure we’re worse off for that. Mouth: same feelings. Fruitcake, dough, cherries, raisins, malt, then chocolate and tobacco and a touch of violet sweet. Or there, crystallised violet flowers, as they make in Provence. Finish: rather medium, and rather more on marmalade, oranges… Back to cherries, raisins and pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: reminds me of some folks that used to fit VW Beetles with genuine Porsche engines. Good, one Euro each and I drop my crappy car analogies and metaphors.

Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars. Today that tradition continues with the release of three new super-premium blended Malt whiskies from Gloags. It is a credit to master distiller John Ramsay and his team that a brand selling more than 30 million bottles of whisky in some 100 countries can conjure up  and win acclaim for a 30 year old luxury product such as this. The 30 Year Old Famous Grouse Malt Scotch Whisky is created from the finest single malt whiskies including the world renowned 'Macallan' and 'Highland Park.' These whiskies are left undisturbed to mature for a minimum period of thirty years, though many rest for considerably longer. Each cask is then individually selected to create a blended malt whisky of exceptional character.

Gold medal, trophy and category champion at the International Spirits Challenge 2007. An extraordinary result!

Tasting Notes: Clear, bright russet colour. Rich aroma of citrus, pineapple and cedarwood. It is characterised by an oaky taste with a hint of mixed peel and has a long sweet finish. 40% Alc./Vol. - Tasting notes sourced from The Famous Grouse.

Other reviews: Deep amber color. Floral dried fruit, nut, molasses, and dark caramel aromas have a nice sherried character. A supple entry leads to a spicy off-dry medium-to full-bodied palate with singed brown spices, dates, dark caramel, and dusty minerals. Finishes with a lightly smoky and peaty fade of cigar box and peppery spice. A round, refined and deep whisky that maintains a delicate nature. 40% Alc./Vol.

White Heather 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

With only 2000 bottles available worldwide, Billy Walker's latest effort is aimed at collectors as well as drinkers. Taking inspiration from a whisky brand which was discontinued in the 1980s as the industry consolidated, White Heather was acquired by Glenallachie in 2017, along with the MacNair’s Lum Reek Blended Malt brand. Walker has put his own unique spin on White Heather, sourcing single malt and grain whiskies from the Highlands, Islay and Speyside. 18 years maturing in a combination of first-fill American barrels, sherry butts and second-fill barrels and hogsheads was followed by three years in a mix of Pedro Ximénez puncheons, Oloroso puncheons and Appalachian Virgin Oak casks to let the flavours marry together and take on additional layers of depth and complexity from the wood. The resulting whisky, which is single malt heavy, presented at 48% and with no added colouring or chill-filtration, perfectly balances gentle peat from the Islay contribution, archetypal Speyside fruity notes, the heather honeyed sweetness of the Highlands, and a rich and rounded foundation from the grain components.

Commenting on the landmark release, Walker said: “This whisky is particularly close to my heart. Creating this blend took me back almost 50 years to when I started my career at Hiram Walker. It was there I started to learn the art of blending and the specialist skills required to select whiskies that when interfaced with each other ultimately amplified the overall flavour experience. With White Heather, I poured everything I’ve learned on my whisky journey into crafting a truly memorable small batch aged blend that sits proudly alongside even the very best single malts. I wanted to honour the original blend whilst recreating it in a much more premium form with exceptional wood.  It’s a fine balance bringing together the character of such different whiskies and cask types, but I’m incredibly proud to now unveil the end result.Very limited stocks.

    $4200.00 Dozen
An impressive Whyte & Mackay handsomely presented in a decanter style vessel with embossed label. It would make a great 21st birthday present. Probably a 1970s or more likely an 80s bottling but difficult to determine which. One only sourced from a private collection.

    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
An ultra aged blend, reportedly in the rich and well sherried style. The Whyte & Mackay brand dates back to 1882 when it was established by Charles Mackay and James Whyte. Whiskies from Dalmore and Invergordon are key components.

Other reviews... This takes us to another dimension, declares Master Blender Richard Paterson. Here selection has become even more critical to avoid the obvious woody notes that could arise at this age. Although we state 30, the whiskies in it are anything from 30 to 36 years old. Malt, Sherry, figs and raisins on the nose of this profound and confident blend. Mouth-coating and full-bodied, with caramel, citrus notes, marzipan and liquorice. A lovely, lengthy interplay between malt and Sherry on the finish. A veritable Christmas pudding of a whisky. As Paterson insists, a blend of this age must be drunk with respect - slow, not hurried. Each flavour must be given time to reveal its many fine qualities - rich and mellow, elegant and distinguished.
