Milagrito Enmascarado Joven (54%) Mezcal (750ml)
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54%
Mezcal ‘Enmascarado’ (masked man) is completely organic with two Mezcals on offer - both are joven (young) mezcals, meaning they have not been aged for long and as such, the liquid is clear. The notable difference is in alcohol content with one at 45% and the other at an unsual 54% ABV. Both are 'vintage' batches with very low production quantities of around 2000-5000 bottles.

Tasting note: [2013 bottling tasted] Crystal clear and slightly viscous. A mild pickled onion and nail varnish whiff evolves to more attractive scents of candlewax, smoked herbs and wool shed. Thicker and heavier in mouthfeel than the 45.2% bottling but with no added heat; aromas repeat in the mouth; mildly oily at the finish with hints of vanilla in the fade. Smokey green tea aftertaste. Superbly balanced with references to Islay whiskies. Great to see this exotic spirit being made available at a natural strength.54% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2012 bottling tasted] Crystal clear with slight viscosity apparent. Pickled onion? Nail varnish? More like balsamic after brief aeration before smokey herbal notes enter followed by oil rag and car tyre - a classic mezcal sniff. Plump, juicy mouthfeel with semi-sweet flavours echoing the nose. Lovely vibrancy; balanced spices add depth and prolong the aftertaste which is salty, mildly rubbery yet fresh. 45% Alc./Vol.

Milagrito Ven A Mi Joven Mezcal (750ml)
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

A Joven style Mezcal produced by the Milagrito company under 'Ven a Mi', using traditional methods and aged for seven weeks in white oak barrels.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a very pale straw blush. Initially more like tequila, this builds slowly with attractive dill pickle, green tomato, salted nut and smokey sweet spice aromas. Several minutes exposure releases more conventional mezcal notes of old vinyl, rubber and wet wood. Light to medium bodied, mildly smokey with a semi sweet medley of dried herbs, salsa and smokey green tea followed by menthol tobacco in the fade. Nicely done. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 46%
Tasting note: [LOT MR028] Quite floral on the nose leading into an exceptionally silky blanco showing medium bodied flavours of wild honey, potpourri, char grilled vegetables, white pepper and brine. Tingly, oily and mildly smokey to finish with hints of cocoa, vanilla and white pepper through the aftertaste. Smooth, polished and contemporary. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear color. Vegetal, yeasty aromas and flavors of marinated grilled beets, caramelized leeks and pearl onions, smoked olives, and clay with a satiny, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a tingling, complex, sweet potato with balsamic, roasted coconut meat, corn pudding, and cacao nibs finish. A delightfully flavorful and balanced blanco with great interplay of fruit and vegetable flavors. 92 points - tastings.com

Topanito Artesanal Still Strength Blanco Mezcal (700ml) - 52%
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

Historically, the only way to sample natural strength mezcals and tequilas was to visit a Mexican distillery. Now there's a new category that brings the experience home: 'Still Strength'. Topanito's high ABV edition promises a more punchy and pure Mezcal experience.

Other reviews... Aroma: Oh yes, on the one hand this is a typical, smoky and spicy Oaxaca aroma which I can find here, but on the other hand it also shows some rather unusual characteristics. First of all, the smoke is a bit more “phenolic”, I have to think of cold campfire smoke, burnt star anise, a hint of rubber and some gasoline. I know that such descriptions must seem rather repulsive to people who have little or no experience with smoky spirits, but actually the whole thing works quite wonderfully here. Of course, there are earthy agave tones as well, the typical mineral salt and an idea of white pepper are there right away, but also herbal tones of rosemary and coniferous wood. With time, more complex, “vegetal” tones come to the fore: sweetish paprika, an idea of peach, but also ginger and some unripe banana. Palate: the smoke is also very dominant and superficial on the palate, but here it appears a little “warmer”: I reminds me more of smoked bacon roasted over a resinous wood fire. Again, there are notes of paprika and green banana, but also rock salt, white pepper and herbaceous notes. The alcohol is very pleasant to drink despite the 52% abv. It is noticeable (no wonder), but carries the taste nuances very skilfully. Really nicely done! Finish: quite long with notes of smoke, herbs (especially rosemary) and some mineral salt. - galumbi.com

Notes from the producers... Color: Clear. Nose: Slightly sweetish, notes of rosemary, fir, pine resin, khaki fruit, pastry notes, ginger, grilled peppers. Taste: Notes of chillies, black pepper, cardamom, BBQ aromas, bacon, paprika. Finish: Long lasting, heavy, oily, full-bodied. 52% Alc./Vol.

    Xicaru Silver Mezcal (750ml)
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40.5%
Tasting note: Water like, except for the bright silvery blush. Perfect clarity. A fascinating opening sniff detects nail varnish, plastic, sump oil and burnt rubber - this could only be mezcal. Returning several minutes later finds bitumen and modelling glue added to the medley. Surprises from the entry which is glycerous, exceptionally soft and accessible, following through into a round, creamy-yet-dry mid palate of burnt vegetable, nail varnish and peppercorn; delicately bitter finish concluding bone dry, salty, satisfyingly warm and with the industrial notes persisting with excellent length. 40.5% Alc./Vol.
