    There is a lighter coloured equivalent to this bottling on the market, said to come from the Long Pond Distillery. This one is much darker and distilled via a pot still instead of a column. Full flavoured, ex bourbon barrel matured and of course well aged, it's described as a solid sipper, but not super heavy on the esters. 594 bottles produced. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Notes from the bottlers... “Nose: Orange peel, lime, vanilla, new leather belt. Palate: Beer foam, vanilla pods, kiwi skin. Finish: Tinned pears, burnt banana, pineapple juice.”

    WHA's first barrel pick for 2024 represents 228 bottles of High West Distillery Double Rye finished for 11 months in a Manhattan cask. "What's that?" you might ask. The distillery makes its own batches of the cocktail using sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters, matures the mix in ex-rye whiskey casks and markets it in 700ml bottles. Barrel #27342 was filled with an MGP mash bill of 95% straight rye / 5% malted barley and 80% rye / malted rye High West Distillate - hence the name 'Double Rye'. Both were a minimum of two years old. The nose takes a while to wake up, slowly releasing mixed nuts, light peppermint and bitter dark chocolate that's reflected on the palate as Brazil nuts, bitter dark chocolate and oily rye take over with interesting hints of dry triple sec. The texture builds with creamy vanillas and zippy rye spices maintaining momentum. This experiment takes rye on a slightly different tangent: mouth filling and enough to chew your way through, however it's hard to tell if the finishing has actually helped or hindered. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Batch 02 of Bladnoch's 30-year-old comes matured in just two casks - one Oloroso sherry and one Moscatel. Probably the oldest official release ever bottled, this exquisite whisky was distilled well before the new management took charge in 2017, so it really is a piece of Bladnoch history. The profile promises floral notes with dried apricots and nutmeg, rich almond and marzipan flavours along with Seville oranges and a finish that's surprisingly light and fruity with a hint of cracked black pepper. Limited to 945 bottles worldwide, the weighty decanter comes housed in a luxury carry case. 45.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Yuzu is a yellow citrus fruit with a tart juice, commonly used by chefs to flavour both savoury and sweet dishes. It’s known for its role in the popular Japanese Ponzu sauce and is also made into vinegar. The yuzu orchards and fruit-soaked baths of Japan’s alpine region set the scene for this spirit. Its creation involves cold and pot distillation to extract the yuzu and sencha green tea keynotes. The result is a light bodied, fresh and natural spirit akin to a flavoured vodka, less the confected sweetness of some brands. The pleasantly tart character of the citrus is captured alongside hints of ginger and jasmine adding warmth and complexity. The flavours lose definition with minimal dilution, but on the flipside, you could sip this straight. Keep it simple with a few cubes of ice and a slice of lemon. 35% Alc./Vol.

    As the name suggests, 'Double Cask' spent five years maturing in American oak followed by a finishing period in French oak. Deeply scented, the nose offers rich vanillan oak, Ovaltine and hints of pickled ginger. The slightly grassy, bittersweet, warm-alcohol style of early Hellyer's bottlings is salient on the palate where a hint of sulphur and something almost metallic mingles with hot spices, the malt and sweet oak rebounding in a bittersweet finish. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Like many others, we've been long-time fans of Kilchoman. Some go as far to say that no better quality peated malt is currently produced in Scotland. A small scale, hands-on approach and attention to detail make each release at least as good as the last. The 2023 PX Sherry edition is the first Kilchoman to be aged full-term in PX casks. You might consider five years old to be too young, but PX hogsheads can be aggressive; a shorter spell is often the best option to ensure a balanced result. Here, the citrus sweetness and peat smoke are beautifully married with the fruit'n'nut chocolate character of the sherry. Never too sweet, by the finish it's definitively Kilchoman; Vivacious and fresh, with a signature rush of maritime peat and tingling pepper fading into cocoa and wood smoke. Distillery character wins the day. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 23,000 bottles produced.

    Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet sultanas and raisins with rounded peat smoke and layers of liquorice and hints of citrus sweetness. Palate: Brown sugar and malty sweetness then orange peel, citrus, dark chocolate and waves of sherry sweetness. Finish: Chocolate coated raisins, oak smoke, mixed spices and lasting PX sweetness.

    The label of this limited edition states 'Exclusive Release', however it's not clear in what respect it is exclusive. Drawn from a single cask, Manzanilla matured (or finished) and with a pretty impressive age statement, it was distilled in 2001 and bottled in March 2023. During its prolonged maturation, the distillery changed ownership three times. Famed for its robust and oily character that's used in large part in the Ballantine’s blends, official bottlings were rare until 2017 when it was included in a new range called the 'Ballantines Single Malt Series'. As with the previous releases, it's named after Thomas Blake Glover who worked in Japan as a merchant and diplomat in the 19th to early 20th centuries - best known for his contribution to the industrialisation of the country. 460 bottles. 57.6% Alc./Vol.

    One of our favourite lesser-known Speysiders, Inchgower often shows a touch of coastal character and waxiness aligning it with several North Coast distillates. Maturation in a Palo Cortado sherry butt makes this edition a variation on classic sherried styles with one taster describing it as "...a creamy-sweet sherry board with full fruit that is pleasant and lovely... you can really notice the cream sherry." 57.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Given the sales of Johnnie Walker Black in Asian countries, it's easy to find someone from the region who likes peaty whisky, which is why Big Peat bottled this special edition just for the Taiwanese market. Colorfully labelled, cask strength, non chill filtered and very, very peaty, what's not to like? The outturn was just 720 bottles, so it's also a genuine limited edition. 53.9% Alc./Vol.

    There was a London edition from Big Peat, so why not an Edinburgh edition? This highly successful series from Douglas Laing forms part of the 'Big Peat World Tour'. As you'd expect, the whisky inside is distinctly Islay with peated malt, bonfire ashes and salty rock pools galore. The outturn was tiny - just 180 bottles at 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

This uber-modern bottle was created to be featured in the new movie. Aimed at collectors, the series features Johnnie Blue in specially designed bottles celebrating the Lunar New Year with one of the twelve Chinese Zodiac animals pictured.     Other reviews... It can be a bit hard to keep track of the maturation profiles / recipes for these bottlings sometimes, but the sheer dedication to cask juggling is admirable. Just thinking about the spreadsheets required to keep track of these things makes me queasy - I barely managed GSCE grace C in maths after all! Colour: pale gold. Nose: soft, creamy smokiness, some soot, oyster juice, grapefruit and seawater. A gentler style of Port Charlotte perhaps? Feels very fresh and coastal with quite a few saline and mineral inclusions. With water: feels a little more typically like Port Charlotte now with these slightly more farmyard smoky tones, frying pancetta, smoked olive oil and camphor. Mouth: if there is wine, it is well concealed, instead we've got some rich and satisfyingly chewy peat smoke, smoked grist, tar, iodine drops and TCP. Classic, modern and super-fresh Islay whisky. Olive brine, pickling juice, gentle creosote impressions and a nicely warming peppery side. Hard to argue with this. With water: wonderfully creamy still, great weight and smoky richness in the mouth. Peppery, kipper smoke, tar, medicines and seawater - but it's the texture that wins. Finish: long, lemony, salty, lots of persistent oiliness and sooty smoke. Comments: my guard is always up when I see wine in the recipe, but its influence is pretty invisible here to me. Feels like they are really nailing this approach to cask tinkering these days. This is not hugely complex, but it's clearly Port Charlotte and it's immensely quaffable. This textural aspect also lends it a feeling of maturity beyond its years, which is pretty clever in my wee book. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

    Although it's not certain when this series started, there have been a number of annual Christmas bottlings from Glenfarclas. Through the 1980s they were cask strength and came with big age statements. More recent bottlings have landed at approximately ten years of age. The 2010 edition had and outturn 5,400 bottles. All the right ingredients such as 100% maturation in Oloroso Sherry casks, zero chill filtration and a 46% ABV add up to a quality limited edition that's more than just a label change. Some will stash this away in collections, but we'd like to think most bottles will get opened and shared in the spirit for which they were intended. Whiskyfun's enthusiastic notes below. Distilled December 2010 / bottled 2022. Probably a European exclusive, though not confirmed. One shipment only.

    Other reviews... Aged in oloroso sherry. Aren't we a bit late once more? I'm noticing that they keep calling themselves 'a Highland'. Colour: full gold. Nose: very similar whisky, this one being just a notch nuttier and with more oranges. Perhaps…. We're extremely close, nonetheless. In cases like this one, the taster must be careful not to swap his/her glasses, or everything's ruined. Mouth: ditto. You would almost believe this was the same batch, but we won't complain, it's excellent young sherried Glenfarclas. Finish: perhaps a little more chocolate and fig jam?     The Glenallachie batches continue to roll out. Their quality and style have received acclaim with the bar set high early (readers may recall the fourth batch was awarded ‘World’s Best Single Malt’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2021). Using various proportions of sherry and bourbon barrels in the mix, Batch 9 promises a typically effusive malt, described as bursting with aromas of mocha, heather honey, sweet raisins and dried red berries while the palate features lashings of cinnamon spice, molasses and honeycomb followed by ginger and dark chocolate on the finish. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and natural colour.

    The tenner is the only cask strength expression in Glenallachie's core range, usually aged in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and oloroso puncheons with a small amount of virgin oak and other casks thrown in for good measure. These editions are known for being surprisingly approachable uncut, offering up a well-balanced blend of sweet dark fruit, rich malt, baking spice and chocolate flavours coalescing into a remarkably gentle finish. It's Speyside at its most hedonistic. 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Grappa labeled 'Grappa di Marsala' must be made using grapes from the region (Grillo, Catarratto, Ansonica, Damaschino, Perricone, Nerello mascalese and Nero d'Avola) and be bottled at a minimum of 40% Alc./Vol. This expression stems from the famous cellars of the Pellegrino family.

    Mezcal de pechuga (pechuga translates to ‘breast’ in Spanish) is made when a finished mezcal is redistilled with local fruits, grains and nuts, and a raw piece of protein (typically a chicken) is hung over the still, cooking in the emanating vapors. Traditionally, this is a style of mezcal produced for special occasions and consumed locally—there are as many different versions as there are distilleries. QQRQ’s stunning, vegetarian-friendly recipe trades the poultry for a homemade mole paste. This paste is made to a traditional recipe by the Méndez family in Santiago Matatlán and includes chile Guajillo, chile Ancho, sesame seeds, almonds, peanuts, garlic, onion, raisins, bananas and cacao. It’s thought to be the first commercial release of its kind.

    Carlos Méndez uses the QQRQ Espadin agave as the base. Following the second distillation, the mole paste is added and the spirit is rested to infuse for two weeks before a final, third distillation.

    Tasting note: Clear. Unadulterated and penetrating whiffs include sweet, sappy, herbal, rubbery aromas with a smokey/saline edge. Intense and engaging in an oily wave of char-grilled capsicum, spent pipe tobacco, exotic agave and white pepper flavours. The finish is vaguely fruity, sweet and grassy with lingering wood smoke. Potent and beautifully balanced. 50% Alc./Vol.

    Whilst bourbon casks are mainly used for maturation of Springbank malts, allowing the distillery character to shine through, a number of sherry casks are also used for added body. Complexity is the key word. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Using artwork from 19th-century Japanese artist Yoshitoshi Tsukioka's New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts, the Ghost Series from Nonjatta unfolds even more expressions from the Karuizawa distillery. Number 7 in the series, entitled "Time Slip", is one of the more unique bottlings. Blended back in the 1970s, this whisky contained both Karuizawa malt as well as Kawasaki grain distillate, which was laid down to rest under glass. Fast forward to the 1980s and the blend was transferred to ex-Karuizawa Spanish Oak for finishing, quite a long one at that being bottled in 2015. One of only 140 bottles, this looks to be one of the more drinkable releases from two legendary distilleries. Collectible.

    A genuine limited release in support of the Great Southern Reef Foundation. 591 bottles were drawn from ex-Apera Sherry casks and finished in 40 year old ex-Tawny Port casks from Murray Street, bringing a lovely salted caramel backbone, enhanced by the Apera stewed fruits with a complexity and depth that only an aged fortified can provide. Bottled at 43% ABV and never to be repeated.

    Notes from the producers... NOSE: Apple, apricot, pear, brown wood sugars and kitchen spices. An apricot danish meets an almond croissant. Complex and evolving. PALATE: A salted caramel backbone and a balance of sweet buttery stone fruits from the Apera cask with that old Tawny treacle. FINISH: A lingering finish of lovely sweet, apple, pear, sultana and treacle overlay.

    Notes from the producers... Nose: Fruity on pear, mandarin jam, grapefruit zest and dried apricot. Spicy notes of pepper, cloves, cinnamon, anis and pistachio with oxidative and vinous touches of the palo cortado. Palate : Well balanced between the rum, oak and the sherry on chocolate, almond, cherry, blueberry, banana, bitter orange and some elegant rose notes.

    Originally blending sourced whiskeys, the Bardstown Bourbon Co. has been releasing small amounts of its own Bourbon under the Fusion Series label since 2019. Essentially, these are sourced whiskeys married with increasing amounts of their own stocks across nine different editions. The Fusion Series culminated in 2022 when it was discontinued, giving way to the distillery's own output under the Origin Series label. A small parcel of the final edition has made it to Australia and we received a small sample. The whiskey's sweetish nose is contrasted by a slightly drier-rye feel to the delivery, akin to eating dark rye bread, but with a buttery topping to help you chew through it.     ...The Fusion Series swan song, billed as their “favorite creation to date,” features a similar mix of sourced 12-year-old Kentucky (30%) and house-distilled bourbon with the BBCo. portion comprising a four grain mashbill paired with a rye bourbon, again both four years old. Fittingly, the nose on this one is the most mature I’ve yet encountered; less bright and fruity, more sultry and wood-driven. That’s not to say it’s oaky in the least. In fact, it’s surprisingly gentle with airy layers of torched sugar, Andes Mints, and pecan pie. The palate is approachable and well-balanced with an early, warming baking spice that carries across the sip, enhanced by notes of rich caramel sauce, milk chocolate fudge, RedHots, and buttery snickerdoodles.     Crafted on the historic Green River campus in Owensboro, Kentucky, Green River is an industrial distillery with roots back to 1885 when J.W. McCulloch first marketed his product as “The Whiskey Without A Headache”. The slogan later changed to “The Whiskey Without Regrets,” in order to avoid liability for misleading medical claims. Over that time, numerous brands have been made there including Ezra Brooks, Mellow Corn, Medley Brothers, Old Medley, Five Brothers and Kentucky Beau. The distillery has also had several different owners and names. Most recently, Terressentia Corporation purchased the plant in 2014 and began renovations. In 2016, acting Master Distiller, Ron Call passed the torch to his son, Jacob, and in 2020, the distillery reclaimed its original title and Distilled Spirits Plant number (DSP-KY 10). Thus, the Green River brand which had largely faded from memory was reborn exactly where it originated. The product launch made an impact in the value Bourbon segment - so much so that Bardstown Bourbon bought the company the following Summer. The eponymous whiskey is distilled from a mash bill of 70% Corn, 21% Winter Rye, 9% Malted 2 and 6 Row Barley, then aged for over five years. Our tasting found an initially rye-accented whiskey where the dry, nutty and spicy character of the grain dominates before opening to a sweeter side. The delivery takes place in a delicious chocolatey setting, followed by a peachiness on the palate, refreshed by muddled mint. The overall style and high rye content makes this a little bit like Sazerac, but with a notable step up in body, intensity and definition.     ...Green River Straight Bourbon nails it out of the gate with their 5 year old stock. What makes it work is that it’s an incredibly easy sipping bourbon thanks to an agreeable flavor profile. Despite being only 90 proof, it still packs ample intensity and a pop of heat. It’s not overly complex and the finish is on the shorter side, yet it only takes one sip to know this bourbon works.     A blend with the majority sourced from Georgia (35%), then Kentucky (31%), 17 year old Tennessee whiskey (19%), and Canadian whiskey (15%) making up the remainder. The flavours here seem to sit on the fence. At first it feels more like a corn-heavy Bourbon, then the rye ups the ante. Medium dry flavours pack decent concentration, trailing off with vanilla bean, peppery warmth and lots of bittersweet mint chocolate. Fades dryish, medium long and oaky. 56.25% Alc./Vol.

    Other reviews... Toastier and woodier than Discovery #8, this blend has a bit more gravity and a considerably different — albeit still engaging — character. Malty and a bit bready on the nose, the whiskey moves over time from a pastoral aroma to one that is somewhat austere and a bit leathery. Much of that follows over to the palate, where the malty elements soon give way to a sharp citrus character, orange and lemon peel, then tobacco and more spice notes. This feels surprisingly hotter than #8, despite being lower in proof. Red pepper gives the finish some lingering burn, with cloves, ginger, and sesame oil coming on strong.     Other reviews... Think of walking in a prairie meadow at a state fair, the wind curving slight hints of grain, and then an explosion of cotton candy, marshmallow, and florals.     ... The corn and wheat are reportedly locally sourced in Kentucky. The nose has an impressive depth to it with notes of leather, dark honey, warm cornbread, and buttery caramels. The palate is considerably bigger than the standard bourbon with rich notes of caramelized sugar, macaroons, and dark cocktail cherry. This one goes well beyond that, having been bottled in late 2023, almost fifty years after it was distilled.     More than eighty different vintages are currently being matured in Laubade’s cellars. The oldest vintage is from 1888. Each year tells a story dealing with the ongoing climate changes, cask quality and the cellar's temperature - all of which define the vintage identity. A culmination of rich know-how and dedication to quality from three generations, the Lesgourgues family continue to run their own 260 acre property.     Following a successful launch in 2022, Green River Distilling Co. expanded its range with two new expressions including this Wheated Bourbon comprised of 70 percent Kentucky-grown corn, 21 percent wheat and 9 percent 6-row barley. Said Dan Callaway, VP of New Product Development, “In contrast with Green River Bourbon, which brings a hearty backbone of rye spice, the wheated expression lends itself to easy drinking while holding its own distinct character." A small sample revealed an oiliness to the nose feel that gets close to much older Bourbons; Cherry chocolate, dried peach and light maple syrup mingle with dustings of cocoa and wood shavings. For a wheated whiskey this is a biggun': Buttery and almost succulent at mid palate, capped off by some beautifully integrated oils through the sweet oak and dark chocolate finish. At around fours years old, it's the antithesis of feminine styles like Weller Special Reserve, never really complex, but equally hard to fault. 45% Alc./Vol.

    Other reviews... Wheated bourbons can sometimes be a bit one dimensional, especially on the nose, but this is impressively expressive from the get-go. The aroma is bright and gently sweet with loads of orchard fruit: golden apples, fresh peaches, and dried apricots. And it builds as it opens with undertones of buttery caramel and soft baking spice. The palate is a little more straightforward but impressively approachable, showcasing rounded notes of butterscotch, peanut brittle, and well-balanced oak ahead of a warming finish of vanilla frosting and orange rock candy.     Nestled in Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World, the Bardstown Bourbon Company is a new breed of whiskey maker, building a reputation for innovation while honouring tradition. The company blends Bourbon and Irish Whiskey, Canadian Whiskey and Bourbon or Bourbon and Rye as well as experimenting with a wide range of wood finishes. This bottling is a case in point: Their first cooperage collaboration, celebrating the equally forward-thinking West Virginia Great Barrel Company. A synergy in modern production led to a custom blend aged in cherry wood barrels toasted with infrared technology.

    According to drinkhacker.com, "The barrels are composed of alternating staves of lightly toasted cherry oak, medium toasted cherry oak, and the more common American oak. However, it’s the final distinctive detail that gets top billing on the bottle – those toasted staves were created using infrared technology. In speaking with Bardstown Bourbon Company’s VP of Hospitality and Product Development Dan Callaway, he told me that the idea behind utilizing infrared toasting was to reduce the tannins from a second barreling. "We were looking for a cooperage to innovate with on barrel maturation and we found the infrared toasted cherry wood was a perfect match for 95/5 rye,” Dan says. “I started about 1.5 years ago and did tons of experiments with bourbon and rye, as well as different toasts.”

    We received a 50ml sample. Being a blend of 6 year old Indiana rye with 12 year old Canadian whiskey, this is not exactly a mainstream style. Some of the usual sharpness and definition of the grain feels like it's been soaked up by the oak, yet even from our small taste, the flavour saturation is impressive. Medium spices and bitter dark chocolate rise to moderate the sugars, closing with a mouth coating, oily finish. Is it more like a rye or is it more like a Bourbon? Either way, it's a fascinating take. 55% Alc./Vol.

    Ninety per cent of this whiskey is seven year old Indiana rye, with the remainder a seventeen year old Tennessee Bourbon. Both were aged for 23 months in x-Foursquare rum barrels from Barbados. The molasses influence is undeniable but not overdone, with just enough whiskey character retained. A 50ml sample kicks off like a high-end rum on the nose, then turns more Bourbonesque. First taste is deliciously rum-like; the second pass builds with Bourbon wood spices, followed by notes of molasses cake, raw sugar, cinnamon and light fruit cake.     Other reviews... Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Collaborative Series has been a source of many interesting and creative finished whiskeys over the past few years. In 2022 they released a 10 year old Tennessee bourbon finished for 23 months in Plantation Rum barrels to great results... Foursquare interestingly uses a 7 year old rye as its base whiskey component. In the early days of rum finished whiskey, bourbon was the most common base whiskey being used. But here along with Fortuitous Union, both have utilized rye. Perhaps both companies are looking for a more interesting interplay between their base spirit and their rum influence. The rye spice is apparent throughout, contrasting with the rum notes, throwing balance to the wayside, and ultimately making for a more dynamic sip. By keeping its Foursquare notes in check, this might be an example of taming the beast in order to reap the rewards. The palate manages to nicely delegate its Foursquare flavor notes throughout its sip and with good intensity. As with the Plantation Rum finished bourbon, the Foursquare finished whiskey also struggles a bit on the tail-end of its finish. It’s not as molasses-filled or rich as you’d expect, and more dry and oaky. Bardstown’s Foursquare finished whiskey is on par with their Plantation Rum finished bourbon. Both offer similar flavor profiles, but each offers its own nuances. The Foursquare finished whiskey’s rye component is definitely noticeable as is its 17 year old Tennessee bourbon component.     ...A wonderfully complex bouquet greets the nose as the silky influence of Barbadian rum rushes out of the glass before a shake of rye spice introduces a mint note which is soon followed by milk chocolate, toasted almond, and a waxy plum aroma. On the palate there’s a lush dose of dark chocolate peppered with some of the rye spice from the nose. Though the flavors aren’t as complex as the aromas, it delivers with a depth that makes this release eminently enjoyable. There’s a dash of nutmeg-powdered raisins on the middle of the tongue before the finish unveils tobacco leaf and a measured dollop of molasses indicative of the rum cask’s influence. The texture is just dense enough to avoid being dull, but it’s on the lengthy finish, which is replete with plantain chips and white pepper, where this pour truly soars. For rum fans and whiskey drinkers alike, this new Bardstown Bourbon Company Collaborative Series expression is a near-perfect marriage, taking the success of their initial foray into rum-finishing and ratcheting it up a few degrees.     Bundaberg rum has been an integral part of Australia’s heritage since 1888. Released in 2011, this commemorative edition has been matured for 1,961 days for the 'birth' of "Bundy R.Bear" as the distillery's mascot in 1961. The importers explain, "We felt that early samples of this value whisky would benefit from an increased sweetness to suit our target audience. So Amrut consigned our first shipment to finish in Oloroso casks (unknown duration) before bottling". All labels had already been printed before this was done, so the words 'Oloroso finished' unfortunately do not appear on the label. 40% Alc./vol.

    Single cask Ardbegs offer amplified distillery character. They're highly desirable but rarely surface. Sakurao, on the other hand is 100% Japanese, aged in Sakurao in four different cask types (ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, American Oak & Mizunara).     At the time of writing, this is the oldest whisky ever released from Talisker. It's also the final instalment in the Xpedition Oak series. Once again, the distillery has partnered with Parley for the Oceans, an environmental organisation, Twelve heavily charred American oak casks were shipped from the Isle of Skye to Canada's Arctic ice fields. A cooper removed the cask ends and they were then left in sub-zero temperatures for four days, causing the wood to fracture and therefore increasing the surface area with which the whisky could interact during its finishing period in the casks back in Scotland. Talisker's notes say to look out for "maritime and spice notes on the nose, followed by an oily mouthfeel with chili, salted caramel, and toffee on the palate, and a long finish laced with briny salt and black pepper."  2455 bottles are available globally. 49.8% Alc./Vol.

    Other reviews... Bottle in support of Parley and finished in ice fractured casks, that is to say in casks that have been kept in Arctic winds for 96 hours, which created cracks, thus extending the wood/spirit ratio. Not too sure that's 'traditional' by the SWA's standards, but it's good fun, it reminds me of that indie Highland Park that was finished on Mount Cervin in Switzerland. Colour: Gold. Nose: It's rather sweet, true to the character of the old Taliskers, with more camphor and aged balm than in the more recent vintages. This is followed by splendid notes of almond paste, fine oysters (the small flat ones), and roots, in particular wild carrot and gentian. There's also a bit of shoe polish and castor oil, as well as a soft and gentle tar. I have no idea what effect the finishing in 'iced casks' was meant to impart to this marvellous old Talisker, let's just say it's not obvious on the nose (no seal fat and very little dried fish, ha-ha). Mouth: Younger, perhaps it's the iced wood? Notes of grapefruit liqueur, banana, and vanilla at the start, but this modern profile quickly gives way to oysters, lemon, seaweed, sea water, salty spices, lemon balm, coriander seeds, sweet woodruff, and a bit of pine sap. The mouthfeel is perfect, with a wonderful texture. Finish: Long and really salty, it's almost as though they've submerged the casks in the ocean rather than exposing them to freezing temperatures. It seems they even added a few sardines and anchovies. Jokes aside, a superb finish that leads to an aftertaste of lemon marmalade and kippers. And salted bitter almonds. And lemon zest. And Italian bitters. Comments: A formidable old Talisker. As long as they mention ages and/or vintages, no problems with funny stories, they can go ahead, nothing really scares us (apart from the hackneyed but still used trick of the unlisted old cask found by chance in the warehouse - wink). 93 points - whiskyfun.com

    ...The challenge with any single malt over 40 years old is to keep the oak in check and not have it overpower the spirit.  Next is to ensure the palate doesn’t become too dry or tannic.  This Talisker 45yo doesn’t just clear those two hurdles, but it sails over them with ease. The nose is exceptionally complex and appealing, offering up something new with each return sniff. The palate also takes you on a journey, starting off with the family of flavours that typically accompany geriatric peated whisky (very similar, in fact, to some of Diageo’s Special Releases editions and other releases of Brora and Port Ellen in recent years), but then broadening as dark chocolate, malt, and oak expand the horizon. Delicious whisky, and one that will delight and reward. - whiskyandwisdom.com

    A rum celebrating the legendary ‘Operation Jaywick’ with half the proceeds going to the Commando Welfare Trust. Operation Jaywick was a raid on shipping in Japanese-occupied Singapore harbour between September and October 1943. The raid was carried out by members of Special Operations Australia (SOA) from Z Special Unit. The team comprised of four British soldiers and 11 AIF and Royal Australian Navy personnel, commanded by a British officer, Major Ivan Lyon.

    Disguised as Malay fishermen, Lyon’s team travelled from Exmouth in Western Australia to Subor Island, 11 kilometres from Singapore, in a captured boat, renamed the MV Krait. The Krait was a slow-moving, wooden-hulled vessel about twenty metres long and sporadically suffered engine trouble for the duration of the voyage. On reaching the island three-and-a-half weeks after leaving Australia, the team launched three two-man collapsible canoes (folboats). Lyon and five others then paddled into Singapore harbour. Arriving at night they split up and slipped from ship to ship attaching limpet mines, paddling another 80 kilometres to rendezvous with Krait six days later on 2 October. When the mines exploded, seven ships were sank or badly damaged. The Krait recovered its intrepid but exhausted canoeists and travelled back to Australia, arriving at Exmouth on 19 October 1943.

    This 9 year old rum also has an amazing ‘origin story’ itself. Initially created at the legendary Beenleigh Distillery (a blend of pot and column still) and tropically aged on-site for 4 years in ex-bourbon casks, it was then sold to a ‘European rum buyer’ and sat in a bond-store in Amsterdam for 5 more years of continental ageing. Fortuitously, the importer Justin Boseley, whilst on a "European rum buying trip" came across the said barrels of Beenleigh and scooped them all up to take back home and bottle. Some of this rum was then bottled as ‘Australia 9 Year Old’ for the European market (back on a boat to whence it came!) but a portion was set aside for this special tribute bottling to a special group of Aussies - all of it going into glass at 55% ABV. The aromas are soft yet deep with a spicy lift. Medium dry, the palate builds into intense, juicy flavours of ripe papaya flesh, mango, dried banana and molasses with cinnamon / pepper warmth budding at the finish. This fresh and slightly leaner, estery style could be mistaken for a lighter bodied Jamaican. Tasted from a 50ml sample.

    Other reviews... On the nose (and even before its near my nose) I am getting wafts of vanilla and oak spice. Some walnuts and peanut brittle. It is many ways very typical of an English Style of rum. Think of Foursquare or (non pun intended) English Harbour in particular. There is a lot to be said for a well blended Pot/Column rum. Something which I feel is often overlooked by some rum enthusiasts. Having said that this isn’t a particularly gentle rum. We are not talking about English Harbour 5 Year Old or Doorly’s XO. No the extra ABV certainly gives this more of a punch. So we are more in keeping with a Foursquare ECS or the Velier Antigua bottlings. Another thing which gives this rum a little more “oomph” is the unmistakable hit of molasses which carries over the nose. There is a really nice “treacly” note which I really enjoy. SIpped, initially the rum is quite fiery with the molasses and oak spice taking centre stage. A few sips in and as the palate and throat acclimatise to the rum – we begin to get more of the softer bourbon influenced notes. So the suggested flavours from the nose begin to shine through. Vanilla, light caramel and peanuts all appear. As we move into the mid palate I begin to get the molasses coming back along with a very nice hit of oak and spice. I’m also getting notes of corn flakes and I keep thinking about freshly buttered toast and golden syrup. There is a hint of smokiness. The finish is dry but very long. The molasses and caramel notes stick around for a long time after the sip. As your mouth dries out the oak and spice come out to play again giving a very more-ish feel to this spirit. This is the first time I have sat down properly with a distillate from Beenleigh. I have to say I am highly impressed. This is great stuff. 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

    Most retailers are lucky to get a handful of Angel's Envy cask strength editions each year - if anything at all. This bottling, which is a bit of an annual ritual for owners, Louisville Distilling, was limited to around 7500 bottles. Aged upwards of seven years in select American white oak barrels before being blended into a single batch and finished in ex-port casks, it lands at a massive 127.9 proof (bigger than the 2013 or 2014 expressions). We have one only from a private stash. Collectable.

    Other reviews... The Angel's Envy Cask Strength port cask finished bourbon has developed a cult following, and it's easy to see why. Jumping out are marshmallow, caramel, vanilla, roasted nuts, with a hint of cardamom, coffee, and nutmeg, but true beauty lies in the pronounced pumpkin pie, dark chocolate, raw pine nut, caramel, and sweet maltiness. I'd love for this whiskey to finish longer, but it does give a hint of nutmeg toward the end. Sourced whiskey. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    ...The nose is more restrained than in previous years, offering notes of cloves, barrel char, well-browned caramel, and a touch of smoke. The body is less Port-forward than in prior years also, showcasing notes of figs, dark chocolate, toasted brioche, and a finish that leads more to a prune character than the traditionally Port-focused raisin. Echoes of sweet tea endure as the finish fades — and all of it is remarkably restrained and in balance, a rare feat considering the alcohol level we’re working with here.     Other reviews... Fresh and grain-forward on the nose, with orange slices, lemon peel, and a hint of pineapple. Very sweet and honeyed on the front palate with chocolate custard, pepper spice, and toasted oak, accented by bright notes of fresh citrus. A mid-length finish offers the sweetness of lemon cream pie and lots of spice at the back. Steady and flavorful progression of balanced sweetness and spice, a rock-solid rye. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com
