I love Emmanuel Brochet's Champagnes, even if I don't drink them as often as I would like, due to the tiny production, and the just-released NV Extra-Brut Le Mont Benoit (L18), derived entirely from the 2018 vintage, did nothing to diminish my enthusiasm, as it's showing brilliantly. Offering up inviting aromas of crisp orchard fruit, blanched almonds, honeycomb, walnuts and fenugreek, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and precise, with a fine-boned but intensely flavored profile, complemented by a beautiful pinpoint mousse. Brochet is the master of intensity without weight, and this wine exemplifies that. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Brochet's Rose de Saignée hails from the La Motelle lieu-dit (single site) in Villers Aux Noeuds, planted in 1965, and is 100% Pinot Meunier. After a 24 hour maceration the grapes are pressed and then vinified before elevage for 11 months in barrel. A rich, gastronomic rosé, with a small production of 5-6000 bottles each year.
Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.

The 2019 Extra-Brut Rosé de Saignée is produced from organically farmed old-vine Pinot Meunier grown in Villers Aux Noeuds that Brochet purchases from another grower. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, plums, sweet berries, peonies and orange, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a textural, enveloping profile and a broad, expansive finish. Avoiding any of the ponderousness that can sometimes mar this style of rosé, especially when the grapes get very ripe, it shows all the precision typical of this producer's style. Drink 2021 - 2026.

As readers will remember, Brochet's 2015 Extra-Brut Les Hauts Meuniers derives from a parcel of Meunier vines (planted in 1962) at the top of his holdings on the Mont Benoit. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2021)The NV Extra Brut Le Mont Benoit 1er Cru is terrific. Dried flowers, almonds, dried pears and chamomile are some of the many notes that flesh out. Ample, broad and creamy, with plenty of depth from the red grapes that make up most of the blend, the Mont Benoit is terrific today. Specifically, the Mont Benoit is rich and vinous on the palate, yet also remains wonderfully light on its feet. Don't miss it.

Guiborat Tethys.19 Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkChampagne Guiborat is based in the grand cru village of Cramant, right in the heart of the Cote de Blancs. Much of their vineyards are planted in the deep chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly grand crus, along with a parcel in the Marne near Epernay where they have some Pinot Meunier. While they own 8 hectares of vineyards, three quarters of their production is sold off to Laurent-Perrier, keeping only the best parcels for their own label.
Tethys is named after the Greek goddess of water and nursing, and the ancient sea in the Mesozic era that covered what is now known as Champagne. This cuvee presents as the most approachable in their range, consisting of 100% Chardonnay mostly from younger vines planted in 2005 in the Chouilly vineyard of 'Les Caures', with further old vine parcels included from Le Mont Aigu (Chouilly), Les Bergieres (Cramant), and Les Briquettes (Oiry). Soils in each of these parcels are predominantly homogeneous chalk with the difference between each down to the thickness of the chalk and the depth of the topsoil. Each vineyard is vinified separately in stainless steel, before 7 months on lees before bottling, and a further 32 months ageing before being disgorged with an extremely low 2.5g/L dosage.

The Bazin family were grape growers from the village of Verzenay whilst the Henriet family specialised in Champagne production. It was in the late 19th century that the two families united through marriage, and today the estate is run by Marie-Noëlle Henriet-Rainon, and they produce a range of outstanding champagnes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.
Having always wanted a Grand Cru vintage wine in the range, Marie-Noëlle had her wish granted in their crafting of the Eusebe cuvee. The combination of Chardonnay from Verzenay, and Pinot Noir from Verzy and Verzenay shows great balance and elegance. The mix can change, but it will always be Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with this 2012 a mix of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay that spent 72 months on lees.

And yet every so often a producer presents a collection of wines that not only get our attention, they command it, and it's hard not to get excited by them. The wines of Hugues Godmé have appeared in Australia before while under the Godme Pere et Fils label, but following recent disagreements over wine making philosophy with his sister, Hugues is going it alone and the results to date are exceptional.

Hure Freres Invitation Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenCellar: 4 - 5 Years (2018-2019)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkThe exceptional quality of growers Champagne is often reason enough to celebrate by popping a cork! Hure Freres (Hure brothers) are located in Ludes, a Premier Cru village from the Montagne de Reims where Pinot is king. When Francois Hure and his brother Matthieu took over the estate in 2005, they brought with them a wealth of knowledge acquired working with the who’s who of Terroir wines in estates such as Domaine de Montille and Chapoutier but also here in Australia, where Francois spent time at Coldstream Hills under the watch of James Halliday.
The Invitation, as the name suggests, is where one should start to discover their wide range of Champagnes. The blend is composed of 50% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay sourced exclusively from family vineyards located in the Montagne de Reims , Vallee de l’Ardre and Vitry le Francois, where they have complete control over grape growing.
It is often said Champagne is made at the press and Hure Freres still use a traditional vertical basket press to obtain the best juice to turn into the base wines ready for the Champagnisation (Methode Champenoise). The Invitation will spend a minimum of 24 months and sometimes up to 36 months on lees after tirage, to gain and enhance complexity. Released as brut with a dosage at 9g/l, lower than the big negoce houses, the results of their careful approach to detail, can certainly be tasted in the Invitation, with a very well defined and precise style , balancing power and elegance with a very fine bead, which is probably the trademark of the brothers as this is a consistent trait throughout their range of strikingly good wines.
Pours well with a creamy white mousse and a pale straw base wine colour. Exceptionally fine and very persistent bead. Nosing reveals aromas of baked bread and yeast lees over some citrus and light toast. Light and lively across the palate but with plenty of richness the palate features flavours of brioche, yeast lees and citrus followed by a hint of grapefruit and subtle cashew. Clean crisp dry finish. Excellent length with a long yeast lees, brioche and citrus aftertaste.
