Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The 2021 Pinot Noir definitely reflects the vintage. Its good color and abundance of gravelly tannins display the smaller berried, smaller vintage. Its bright fruit, intense concentration and plentiful acidity accompany primary red fruit flavor, with an impressive show of ample black tea leaf-like tannins. It's a wine for the long haul that draws out on the extended finish. To be released in 2024. Drink 2025-2039.

The 2021 Pinot Noir is vibrant on the nose and totally precise and focused. The acid spools right from the front of the palate and has a mobile, agile way about it. The season may have had its challenges, but the wine is effortless, natural and shapely. It's great. The 40% whole bunch here sits well within the red fruit and creates a capacious mid-palate, without an impact of stalky flavor. Superb. A real pleasure to drink. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2037.

Intense but bunchy nose with a rich, supple palate that finishes long and expansive.

This release brings together Bannockburn’s entire spectrum of Pinot vineyards. The 2024 includes fruit from Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, 10 Rows (1991), Stuart Block (1997), Anns Block (2004) and the close-planted De La Terre block planted in 2007. All the sites lie in volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones. Fruit from each block fermented separately, with approximately 20% bunches included and a small portion undergoing carbonic maceration. The wine was pressed to hogsheads and puncheons (25% new) for 10 months’ maturation.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. The nose is intense but at the same time very bunchy with dried clove infused aromas of dark cherry and strawberry trailed by some smoked meat, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich supple dark cherry and strawberry fruits are seductively layered across the palate with complexing elements of dried clove, bramble, rhubarb, smoked meat, forest floor and spice lending further interest. Concentrated and powerful it has polished tannins. Lingering through the long expansive conclusion are dried clove and spicy smoked meat characters.

All the herbs and spices, of course, but the shells of nuts, woodsmoke, a chicory element and whispers of both black coffee and black tea, all of which swirl around sound, sure-footed cherry-berry fruit flavours. This will age beautifully, and is best consumed with at least another few years under its belt. Drink 2027-2033+

2021 Bodega Chacra Sin Azufre Pinot Noir
    Patagonia, ARGENTINA
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.

Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.

Sin Azufre is a passion project for Piero, with zero sulphur additions the team take extreme care and attention to detail with this wine. Precise selection of bunches within the 1955 vineyard, which is then aged mostly in concrete.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Sin Azufre is the no-sulfur-added cuvée of Pinot Noir from organic and biodynamic grapes from vines planted in 1955. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts for 15 days and matured 60% in French oak barrels, 30% in concrete tanks and 10% in clay amphorae for nine months. It's light and fresh with 12% alcohol. The first vintage of this wine in 2013 changed everything, and today all the wines have very little sulfur. The nose is alive and expressive, denoting a living wine with hints of organic earth and tons of flowers and translucent red berries. It's clean, precise and chiseled, with pungent flavor, weightless but full of energy and light, with purity of flavors and symmetry. There are no hints of a wine with no sulfur added. It's just a superb expression of Pinot. Purity without funkiness. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Brokenwood has been producing Pinot Noir from the Indigo Vineyard since 2002, utilizing three clones (114, 115, and MV6) planted on diverse soil types to create both varietal and single-vineyard wines with bright fruit character. The 2024 vintage was challenging, with a late-season frost in October significantly reducing yields, particularly for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, leading to uneven fruit maturation and requiring careful picking. Despite the low yields, the fruit was in good condition, and harvest occurred under clear skies.
Thirty percent whole bunch inclusion with maturation predominately in used French oak for a period of 9 months. Semi translucent bright ruby red colour with a light crimson red hue. Fragrant red cherry, violet and red raspberry scents sail out of the glass followed by a whiff of anise, fresh herbs and spice. Bright youthful almost crunchy like acidity and polished tannins. Concludes long with lots of frisky red fruits.

A touch over 2.5 acres, the Tout Pres vineyard has three individual soil types across a three-sided cirque (an amphitheatre-like valley head) that rises above the other vineyards. Each slope consists of a soil type. The largest slope is black volcanic soil of limestone, the second is quartz gravel mixed with red ironstone soil and the third, an iron strand in grey sandy loam. Being the most densely planted vineyard on the estate the soils and intense competition force the vines to work hard, resulting in fruit that is lush but masculine and provides the coveted structure found only in the most age worthy wines. Tout Pres is fermented with 100% whole bunches and is matured in 100% new Allier French oak.

    Other Reviews....
Grown and made by the Farr Family at Bannockburn. The Tout Pres vineyard was planted in 2001 with 7300 vines per hectare. The wine sees 100% whole bunches.
This wine held me transfixed. It has all the spice in the world, more soil and beet characters than an agrarian kitchen, cherried flavours arranged in firm lines and in number, and a presence that is somehow more than its sum. This is firm. This wine has a cool power. It’s meaty, spicy, floral and more. But most importantly of all, drinking it is an affair to remember. Drink 2028 - 2035+.

Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

    Other Reviews....
An admirably pure, cool and pretty nose is also quite floral with its spicy aromas of lilac, violet and rose petal adding elegance to the blend of both red and dark pinot fruit. There is very good delineation and underlying tension to the lighter weight flavors that terminate in a lightly austere and stony finale. This too could use better depth but despite the light weight flavors, more should reasonably develop before full maturity. Drink through 2027+.

Sappy tannins and a thread of straight shooting acidity. There is a chew to the red berried fruit and a nice crunch of pomegranate seed on the finish. A well rounded wine. Drink now and will cellar another 3-4 years. A perfect partner to black truffled scrambled eggs on sourdough. Drink 2024-2028.

A vivid, fine-boned and tightly wound pinot noir of exceptional length and persistence with vibrant, effusive perfume. Red cherry at the tarter end of the spectrum with twiggy wood notes, some faint eucalyptus, white pepper, mezcal spiciness and a sense of freshness overall. Tannins are lacy, ultra-fine and tighten the wine well. It's delicate, almost blink and you'll miss, but the filigree is all here. Drink by 2034.

Matured in French oak. Semi translucent bright red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Fragrant red cherry and strawberry scents drift from the glass followed by hints of rhubarb, dried herbs and brambly spice notes. Light in body delicious red cherry and strawberry fruits decorate the palate with a supple and elegant feel. Traces of rhubarb, infusions of fresh herbs and spice also chime in. Polished tannins with a fresh red fruited finish.

From a relatively older vineyard located near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Wild-yeast fermented. A bright but pale ruby colour in the glass makes things easy on the eye. This lightness and vivacity are reflected strongly in the wine, decidedly fine-boned with refreshing red cherry, pomegranate juice and an almost watermelon/granite sweet tang rolling through. Very pretty pinot noir, delicate and thirst-quenching in a way. An attractive crunch to texture and good length seal the deal. It feels lithe and wildly appealing for its suggestion of early consumption, or dare we suggest direct from an ice bucket too. Drink by 2026.

There’s something quietly thrilling about the wines of Cellier Saint Benoit. Based in Arbois Pupillin, Benjamin Benoit’s domaine is still young by any standard, yet the clarity and character of his wines place them firmly among the Jura’s most compelling new voices. After time spent with Charles Lachaux, Amélie Berthaut, and Nicolas Faure in Burgundy, Benoit returned home earlier than planned in 2019 following the sudden passing of his father. That year marked his first vintage, and by 2020, he had full control of the domaine — bringing with him a clear and focused vision rooted in both tradition and precision.

Rather than blending parcels, Benoit vinifies and bottles his lieux-dits separately, giving each site its own voice. The 6.25 hectares of vines — planted to Chardonnay, Savagnin, Ploussard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir — are farmed with care, and the cellar work is firmly low-intervention. Inspired by the techniques of Pierre Overnoy, Benoit works with minimal inputs: careful destemming of Ploussard by hand, whole-cluster ferments for Trousseau and Pinot Noir, gentle pressing of whole bunches for the whites, and aging in neutral oak. The use of sulphur is minimal, and in some cuvées, absent altogether. The result is a suite of wines that feel clear-eyed and precise, yet still vibrant and soulful — wines that make you stop and pay attention.

They’re not inexpensive, but they are important. As the Jura continues to evolve and mature, Benoit’s wines feel like a glimpse of where things are headed, a signpost for the future of Arbois Pupillin, honouring the region’s heritage but elevated by a new generation’s clarity of purpose.

Sourced from 0.5 ha of Pinot Noir planted on the fossil-rich calcaire à gryphées soils of the Courbes Raies vineyard in Pupillin. The site is west-facing, and the vines—planted by Benjamin Benoit’s father and grandfather—range from the mid-1980s back to approximately 1959. The fruit is vinified as 100% whole bunches in large Grenier tronconic vats, then aged in a mix of 228-litre barrels and 600-litre demi-muids. The site, soils, and older vine material contribute to a structured and mineral style of Jura Pinot Noir, shaped by Burgundian influences in both viticulture and élevage.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Arbois Pupillin Courbes Raies unwinds with a distinctively floral perfume as rose petal and violets rise from the glass. Ripe red cherry and spicy nuances add more layers. Medium-bodied and polished, the juicy 2022 delights the taster with uplifting freshness. Round and complete, it walks off the stage with an elegant finish. Drink 2024-2032.

Using his extensive contacts with the finest growers in Burgundy, Charles sources grapes from some of the top plots in the area, and makes the wines at a separate facility in Beaune. Charles is aiming for a similar purity and terroir focus as those wines of Hudelot-Noellat, and as such has minimal use of new oak each year.

Les Feusselottes is situated just below the village, surrounding the cemetery, and has perhaps the deepest and richest soils of the Chambolle Premier Cru sites. This shallow, stony soil has a high proportion of limestone, which has long been considered the cause of the mineral characters in the finished wines.

Les Lavrottes is a tiny Premier Cru vineyard just south of Bonnes Mares and is the continuation of the larger Les Noirots site. Chambolle-Musigny as a whole has lighter limestone soils than in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation to the north, with a much lower proportion of clay. This light, pebbly soil covers the Les Lavrottes vineyard, with hard limestone subsoil beneath. Lighter soils such as this one are often associated with lighter wines. However, a little clay and iron in the soils here gives a little more weight than might usually be expected from Chambolle-Musigny.

Located between the Premier Cru vineyards of Aux Combottes and Aux Beaux Bruns, roughly one third of this vineyard is classified as Premier Cru and has been owned by Domaine Leymarie-Ceci since 1976. That domaine does not bottle much itself, and this plot is more widely seen in negociant bottlings such as this from Charles Van Canneyt.

No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling.

The Original naming refers to the 1995 plantings that first went in the ground at Cobaw Ridge but also aptly describes the Cooper family behind the vines.
As with many great wines, the more time spent with it, the more the journey is cinematic, which is particularly apt here. On opening, a seamless, svelte and lighter weight red with dark cherry, caraway seed, Aussie bush elements and white pepper dusted in. The more time open, the more big swirls, the build of savoury elements in hazelnut, garam masala spice, spearmint and amaro-like qualities. The texture opened up somewhat too, more expansive, a spread in the palate on guiding trails of gossamer. There are wines that deliver strict bounds of Olympic performance, precise and at the apex, and then those that build as an expressive performance. The latter here, and we’re better for it. High fidelity, high density, high tension. All happening.
It’s a wine on the edge, and for personal preferences, that’s mostly where I want my wine to be. It keeps you alert, it keeps you seeking out more information. This wine is imbued with fine, elegant pinosity and shows off refined tannin profile and a sense of complexing minerality. The rub is that its a marginal site, a cool place that delivers a nervous freshness at times, and with that mint, Aussie bush/alpine elements that could irk some who approach this wine. I bet most who do know what they’re in for, know the quality potential inherent, and look for the distinct personality even in the more edgier years. Amongst all this, dark cherry, pitch perfect in freshness and bite, some sweet spice too. Just shy of medium weight. Very compelling. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday. Maturation took place in a combination of seasoned and new French oak for a period of 8 months.

Some whole bunches and matured in a combination of seasoned and new oak (25%). A very bright crimson. Gorgeous aromatics redolent of picked red cherries, wild strawberry and potpourri. Equally vibrant and energetic on the palate, it's so well balanced that, while delicious now, it will continue improving for quite a few years to come. That it's so well priced is the icing on the cake. Drink by 2031.

Matured for 11 months in French oak (26% new) with 5% whole bunch inclusion in the ferment.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant light red hue. Fragrant dark cherry, strawberry and violet scents intermix with subtle anise, fresh herb and spicy cedar notes. Lighter in body and showing greater elegance than past vintages, cherry and strawberry fruits are featured over subtle anise, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar. Fine grained tannins finishing with ample freshness on the mid length aftertaste.

Fragrant violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry scents blossom out of the glass trailed by some plum, hints of anise, forest floor and dried herb notes. Light in weight, the palate features juicy red to dark cherry, strawberry and red plum fruits over an inky earth, fresh herb and spice back drop. A juicy, mid weighted Pinot with slightly chewy tannins.

Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Spicy dark cherry and rhubarb aromas are intermeshed with clove and earth notes. Juicy dark cherry and plum fruits overlay an earthy clove and spice back drop. Medium bodied it has ripe, slightly chewy tannins which lend a gentle freshness to the spicy dark fruited conclusion.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
