Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Sourced from several locations in the Great Southern region, the fruit for this Pinot was fermented using a combination of wild fermentation and selected yeasts. Maturation took place in 1-3 year old French oak barrels for 6 months. Following on from the 2019 vintage, 2020 was another very low yielding year, the Great Southern region experiencing its driest winter and spring in 100 years. These dry conditions continued throughout Summer until good rainfalls in February provided much needed moisture. Compensating the low crop levels was fruit of exceptional quality.

Ad Hoc’s Cruel Mistress continues its run of hot form, making it one of the best value Pinots out there.

Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and a bright light red hue. Alluring and highly fragrant the nose offers up aromatics of violets, dark cherry and strawberry which intermingle with hints of anise, forest floor and spicy cedar. Making a supple entrance onto the palate are delicious dark cherry and ripe strawberry fruits which are carried by an excellent power wave. Notions of anise, vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy dried clove flow onto the back half. Silky tannins combine with ample freshness to form a long intensely flavoured finish.

Wild-yeast fermentation (10% whole bunch) with approx 14 days on skins, 12 months in French oak hogsheads (20% new). Nothing shy about De La Terre. Front and centre with a riot of pinot fruit, full of energy and joie de vivre. The fragrance is all about spices, red and blue berries, forest floor and autumnal shades. Medium bodied, warm and free flowing. Generous in tannin, sporting a sweet spot of confection, licorice and dark chocolate. Drink by 2030.

Jeni Port - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (January 2021)

It’s certainly complex. Put it near your nose and scents of potato, sweet beetroot, twigs, cherries and assorted herbs all come at you, along perhaps with earth and a certain volatility. Sweet, nervy beetroot is the one to remember though as it continues on into the palate and beyond, aided by a crush of purple flowers, cherry-soaked twigs and an orange-like tang. It’s hard to know what to make of it all; time is likely to be kind, but it’ll be a bumpy ride along the way. Drink 2022 - 2026+

Bass Phillip Wines (based in Leongatha) were established by Phillip Jones in 1979, where a small 3.5-hectare vineyard was planted to Pinot Noir. The estate has grown over many years (to 14 hectares) and is now one of the most sought-after producers of premium Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia. There is a big focus on spending many hours in the vineyard, demonstrated by the commitment to practice organics since 1993 and biodynamics since 2002.  As of April 2020, Bass Phillip wines have been acquired by Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Domaine Fourrier). In this new phase of growth moving forward, Jean-Marie Fourrier will begin to take an active and primary role in the management of the vineyards and the wine production process as Chief Winemaker of Bass Phillip wines.

                  Notes from the producer....
The idiosyncratic, biodynamic and greatly admired Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir, aged in French Allier barriques for 18 months, is a defining Victorian pinot noir. Uplifting and memorable, this multi-layered and nuanced wine reflects a superb obsession, based on a low-cropping, four-hectare vineyard site at Leongatha. Black cherry, floral and game aromas, supple viscosity and underlying toasty oak. This wine is long in flavour, powerful & complex. It can be cellared for many years.

                    Notes from the producer....
From the original Estate vineyard; 8,500 vines/hectare; specific plot cropping at approx. one tonne/acre, often blended with the best fruit from our Leongatha Vineyard. Wine with attractive, rich fruits in the mid-palate, with the strength to improve up to ten years in the cellar. Bottled without fining or filtration.

The exquisitely balanced single vineyard Estate Pinot Noir draws fruit from the extremely low cropping, closely spaced north easterly facing, four hectare un-irrigated vineyard. The wine is vinified in an open stainless steel fermenter with regular plunging to extract colour and flavour. After fermentation the wine is gravity racked into a combination of new (60%) and old French Alliers oak for a maturation period of around 15 to 18 months.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

This wine is from a single Tour de Curon site which is located below the tower in Arbois. While the fruit is perfectly ripe, this Pinot Noir is also very bright and vibrant.

A mentholated top note is present on the more restrained nose of red berries, underbrush and a touch of humus. There is a vague whiff of menthol to the equally pretty aromas of various red berries, orange peel, spiced tea and rose petal. 75% comes from Bourgogne and Hautes Côtes de Nuits Dames Huguettes vineyards, with some fruit from Savigny, St-Romain and Monthelie. Glowing red purple, very exciting lifted fresh dark red fruit. Darker fruit on the palate, but still with a great sense of energy, filling the mouth, balanced fruit and tannins, ready for bottling. Very long.

Semi translucent dark red core with tinges of black around the edges and a light red hue. Fragrant violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry aromas are overlaid by spicy dried clove notes with forest floor and spicy cedar ensuing. Light with a fresh elegant feel the palate is delicately flavoured with spicy red to dark cherries and strawberries infused with dried clove over game, traces of cedar and forest floor characters. Finishes dry and quite supple with bright acidity and refined tannins. Good length and finesse with a medium to long spicy red fruit conclusion.

Dark red in colour with black tinged edges showing good depth and a bright red hue. Fragrant crunchy red cherry and winter strawberry aromas have a forest floor overlay with notions of toasty oak and stalky herb notes also evident. Red cherry and winter strawberry fruits are underpinned by vibrant acidity which gives the palate a youthful crunchy like feel. Toasty oak, forest floor and spice characters ensue. Faintly chalky tannins with a bright medium length aftertaste.

From the newer block on the Mayer home estate. This is all destemmed fruit which is a departure in winemaking approach too.
Very dark cherry schism of pinot noir, some choc-coffee notes, sweet, turned earth notes. Strong perfume. Supple in palate, shiny, fresh, dark fruited but lively, crisp tannins and jolly-good-time vibes. A sense of fanciness for sure, but mostly about the big drinkability scale things. Drink 2021 - 2025.

This is fine boned but quite assertive, structured and tannin-hewn with autumnal characters, dried leaves, porcini, game meat, in darker, brambly berries. It’s sinewy and long, a feast for the senses and really, straight up, delicious. Moreish red, vibrant and delightful. Ripper drink for the bucks and punching above its pay grade for seriousness. Drink 2021 - 2030.

This wine is normally produced from Brokenwood’s Indigo vineyard located in Beechworth, however, the bushfires of 2020 meant that the fruit was smoke tainted and nothing could be picked. Fortunately, Brokenwood was able to source parcels of fruit from premium growers in Tasmania. Twenty five percent whole bunch fruit was included in the ferment with maturation taking place in French oak barriques for a period of 10 months.
Semi translucent bright dark red colour with black tinged edges and a light crimson hue. A fragrant mix of violets, sour to red cherries and winter strawberries mesh with forest floor, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Light but powerful and highly moreish, the palate is filled with ripe red cherry and strawberry fruits which are cast against a back drop of fresh herb infusions, forest floor and spicy cedar. Very polished in its feel with a super fine tannin structure it finishes fresh with a long, savoury aftertaste.

With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

The flip side was the Syrah missed the bad weather and flowed normally. Not so silly to have earlier and late varieties in the vineyard! Last time it was that bad was 1990 but bingo ‘91 was a huge crop! Fingers crossed for this year. Poetry from Alan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge. Reads like nouveau Ogden Nash.

While the wine feels loose knit a a sheath of tannin tightens as the wine rolls over the palate, finishing long yet lightly chewy and very good. It’s fragrant, energetic, has that intangible sense of nourishment that some great, unadorned wines have. It feels unique, idiosyncratic in the best sense; very Cobaw Ridge. Easy pleasure, fine detail, a serious pinot with lift and presence. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Rich, expansive and supple the palate is engulfed with ripe fleshy dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruit. Elements of anise, forest floor, dried herbs and spicy cedar flowing onto the back half. Superb power wave with velvet smooth tannins and a long moreish aftertaste.

The Te Muna Road vineyard is separated into two distinct terraces, with Pinot Noir grown on the rocky, clay infused soils of the upper terrace. Light in body, the savoury palate is layered with dark cherry and winter strawberry fruits which give it a supple feel. Lying underneath are forest floor, game, subtle dried herb and spicy cedar elements. Good drive with finely grained yet structural tannins and fresh acidity leading into a long, spicy and complex finish.

There’s cedary oak here but it’s been dialled back while, at the same time, tannin has been dialled up. This wine has fruit but it also has a great emphasis on structure. It’s not chunky, it’s chalky and dry, effectively mineral, almost quartz-like. It brings gravitas to the Curly Flat equation. I looked at this wine over the course of 24 hours and every time I did my score on it went up. Drink 2022-2029+

Anyway, I hate DIAM corks, more in a wine writer capacity as much as anything, because so often you can’t get the cork back into the bottle.

All strawberries and dried flower perfume, a dash of sweet spice, subtle stony earthiness too. Light bodied, fresh and delicate, red cherry and ripe strawberry, fine emery tannin, maybe some fragrant basil, and a gentle but insistent drag of fine dusty tannin on a long cool finish. What a lovely wine this is. Should blossom with a few more years in bottle too. Drink 2022 - 2029+

Red cherry, almond paste, mint and floral perfume, subtle sweet spiced oak. There’s a come-hither juiciness to the raspberry and cherry flavour, fine powdery tannin, a certain sappy energy, and a pretty red fruited finish of fine length and gentle grip. All the charm. Intense spicy dark cherry, subtle violet and anise scents sail out of the glass trailed by earthy forest floor, toasty cedar and fresh herb notes. Supple and savoury, dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours are layered across the light to medium weight palate. Underscoring the fruit are dried herb, forest floor and spicy cedar nuances. Good flesh and power with velvety tannins. Finishes long and elegant picking up a subtle meatiness along the way.

He took over his family domaine at a very young age and now has more than 20 vintages of experience behind him. Starting out with small family holdings David, together with his business partner Francois Feuillet, have added to their portfolio of wines through the purchase of some exceptional old Grand cru vineyards throughout Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis, including prime holdings of retiring vigneron Jacky Truchot.

There is fine richness to the solidly concentrated flavors that evidence plenty of minerality though the tangy, warm and somewhat woody finish is somewhat awkward today. Note that my projected range assumes that this eventually harmonizes. Drink 2036+.

There is equally good volume and richness to the medium-bodied and delicious flavors that culminate in a balanced and hugely long though youthfully austere finish. This is also really very good though unlike the Clos de la Roche, this should be approachable after only a decade. Drink 2036+.

While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
