While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2021 Bindi Block 5 Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkBindi's Block 5 Pinot Noir is sourced from their 1992 "high-density" vineyard planting. Fruit is fermented in open vats and matured in French oak barrels of which 35% are new for a period of 15-17 months. In recent years, Bindi has intentionally reduced Block 5's yields by approximately 30% to enhance the quality of the fruit.

Bindi's Block 5 and Block 8 are adjacent sites. The former was planted in 1992, the latter in ’16 and at high density. I wonder what they ‘talk about’ (they’ll be communicating via their root systems). Block 5 might say: I’m older and my wine reveals a depth. Yes it does. Beautifully modulated with perfect fruit flavours, a richness yet not weighty, layers of spice, cedary oak, complexity and detail. The tannins are the thing – textural, raw silk-like and pure. This is stunning. In response, Block 8 might add: I respect you, but wait until you see what I’m going to become. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionOver the years, the most impressive wines I’ve had from Bindi have been made from Chardonnay, which is not to say I’m right, but more something that has stuck with me. Here we have the venerable Block 5, which for me is significantly better and more composed than the Block 8, which is priced the same. OK.
|Cherry, dried flowers and roses, almond, hazelnut and spice, cedar and mint. It’s medium-bodied, lovely mouth-perfume, and so much of that, a little sap, raspberry and red cherry, quite juicy, tannin is succulent yet firm, with a graphite character, quiet earthiness, and just so composed and long. It’s a wine of beauty and poise. A little cinnamon toast and orange peel carries in the aftertaste. Benchmark Pinot. That’s what I’m talking about! Drink 2025 - 2035+

Notes from the producer....
The 2020 Original Vineyard spent 16 months in barrel. This wine comes from our 1988 planting. As always, it's beautifully fragrant of red fruits, with subtle earthiness and undergrowth giving added complexity. It is definitely expressive Pinot Noir! The palate is supple, juicy, textured, fine and long. The tannin builds and drives whilst remaining silky smooth and elegant. History tells us this wine will improve for at least six more years and drink well beyond that.

Notes from the producer....
The 2020 Block 5 spent 16 months in barrel. This wine comes from our 1992 planting. The 2020 has its usual combination of red and dark berry and plum fruit depth with spice, earth and a certain lavish richness. The palate is fresh and initially supple then builds power and drives long. It is quite structured and powerful and will certainly improve in texture and complexity for at least six years. Due to the incredibly small crop this wine is incredibly difficult to allocate.

Very dark cherry schism of pinot noir, some choc-coffee notes, sweet, turned earth notes. Strong perfume. A beautiful, nervy pinot here. Such purity and depth on the nose for a pinot that barely has any extraction. Tile, flowers, minerals and racy crushed raspberries and wild strawberries. 2022 Bodega Chacra Cincuenta Y Cinco Pinot NoirPatagonia, ARGENTINA$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkBodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America. Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added, while a conversation between friends has turned into a partnership with esteemed Burgundian Chardonnay producer Jean-Marc Roulot joining Piero in Patagonia in planting, farming, and vinification of Chardonnay at Chacra.
Located in the Rio Negro Valley in northern Patagonia, Argentina, Bodega Chacra is comprised of 24 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. Piero also values responsible farming as demonstrated by his grandfather at Sassicaia, and each of the vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the fruit is handled the gentlest way possible, with movements transferred by gravity, fermentation occurring in concrete, minimal new oak usage, and no fining or filtration at bottling. Piero's aim is to retain greater purity and transparency, and it's this ability for his wines to so clearly express their origin that's so engaging with Chacra wines. It's also one of the key attributes that only the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across the globe are able to achieve.

Barda hails mostly from ungrafted vines that are 25 years old, along with fruit from the 1955 and 1932 vineyard. Maturation is completed 60% in concrete to enhance the fresh and crunchy nature of this Pinot Noir.
Other Reviews....
The 2021 Barda has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12.5%) while retaining very good freshness. After fermenting with some 15% full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts, 60% of the volume matured in French oak barrels (10% of them new), usually the more structured lots, while the rest was kept in concrete (the lighter lots) to keep the freshness and crunchiness of Pinot Noir. It was conceived as an easy-to-drink wine from their younger vines, but it has more depth than just that and it's quite versatile with food. 2021 was a cooler year, with frost in the winter that killed all the bugs, and they had a good crop (they usually get 35 to 50 hectoliters per hectare, maybe a little higher for Barda). It's fresh, vertical and mineral with a saline twist that is more noticeable with lower alcohol. It's the same genetic material as the rest, a massal selection planted ungrafted with some 20 years of age, and he sometimes gets declassified grapes or wines from the older vineyards (Cincuenta y Cinco and Treinta y Dos). This is the true second wine from Chacra. It has a pale and bright ruby color and a very clean and expressive nose, with some leafy notes, red fruit, hints of orange peel and a vibrant palate with purity of flavors, young and energetic. Piero Incisa told me this vintage reminds him of 2013; so, I looked up my description of that wine, and it is quite similar to this. Delicious and amazing value. A perfect introduction to Chacra... 70,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. Drink 2022 - 2027.

The 2021 Sin Azufre is the no-sulfur-added cuvée of Pinot Noir from organic and biodynamic grapes from vines planted in 1955. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts for 15 days and matured 60% in French oak barrels, 30% in concrete tanks and 10% in clay amphorae for nine months. It's light and fresh with 12% alcohol. The first vintage of this wine in 2013 changed everything, and today all the wines have very little sulfur. The nose is alive and expressive, denoting a living wine with hints of organic earth and tons of flowers and translucent red berries. It's clean, precise and chiseled, with pungent flavor, weightless but full of energy and light, with purity of flavors and symmetry. There are no hints of a wine with no sulfur added. The élevage for the 2021 Cincuenta y Cinco was different from the past; they have now aged 40% in concrete tanks (it used to be 25%), 40% in French oak barrels and 20% in clay amphorae for nine months. They use cover crops in the vineyard, where they don't even use sulfur or copper. It fermented in a round and wide concrete vat with indigenous yeasts for 12 to 15 days with full clusters and an infusion with little extraction. Treinta y Dos is a single vineyard wine, made from old vineyards planted in 1932 on a land layered with clay, sand and pebbles. The most structured of all Chacra’s wines, Chacra Treinta y Dos is meant to be aged. Its soft characteristics and velvety tannins, however, make it drinkable at a younger age.
Other Reviews....
Like the majority of these wines, the percentage of wine in concrete that didn't see any oak in the 2020 Treinta y Dos has been increased to 50%, and the remaining 50% matured in French oak barrels (only 10% new) for nine months. It comes from a plot planted in 1932 on clay, sand and silt soils that deliver the most structured of Chacra's reds. The wine fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and has moderate 12.5% alcohol, which for a warmer and riper year like 2020, is remarkable. But of course, comparisons bring out the truth: 2020 was quite different climate wise from 2021, and the wines from 2020 show it. There's a little more ripeness, and the quality of the tannins is not the same, probably because of a hurried ripening of the grapes; plus, it's a little grainier and has a little more rusticity in the mouthfeel. It's faintly oaky but only faintly, even if there's no new oak whatsoever. 9,972 bottles were filled in November 2021. Drink 2022 - 2029.

Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.
Extremely perfumed with rose-petal, violet, rose-stem and sweet-strawberry aromas that follow through to a full-bodied palate with tight, juicy tannins that are strong and intense. A very structured, young, top pinot from here. Needs three to four years to soften. Try after 2024.

Concentrated, lush sweep of stony tannin, blood plum and red fruits, cinnamon and clove, dried roses, smoked meat. It’s lavish, and not shy on spicy oak, but the intensity of fruit and power is there too. There’s a slightly tacky wet paint feel to texture, and a savoury dried herb character and subtle chicory bitterness, a powdery slightly oak-laden finish of excellent length and poached and spiced strawberry flavour rounds it out. Impressive wine, and in need of a little more cellaring, but kind of heavy on the oak. Still, bloody good. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Cincuenta y Cinco comes from vineyards planted in 1955 which gently rest on a sea of pebbles, typical in riverbed soils. It is fermented whole cluster at very low temperatures, enhancing the floral characteristics of the wine. Cincuenta y Cinco has the highest amount of tension of all the Chacra wines while it still retains a comfortable ease.

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with ripe strawberries and citrus fruit, as well as aromatic flowers. Full-bodied with plenty of fruit and creamy, chewy tannins that are polished and very impressive. Long and linear. One of the best of this bottling. Drink after 2023, but already a gorgeous bottle.

Charismatic and distinctive style, and not your usual kind of Pinot Noir in a way. Spiced strawberry, wet clay earthiness and ‘mineral’ character, chamomile and dried flowers, slightly smoky, five spice, dried cherry. It’s fleshy and succulent, exotic spice and red fruits, fine pumice stone tannin, fresh clean acidity, with a sage and thyme perfume, and a long stony finish of excellent length. Almost a Barbaresco-like firmness and intensity, yet still identifiably Pinot Noir, but from a different place. A wine of intrigue and individual character. Drink 2023 - 2030.

I only recently reviewed the 2022 Bream Creek Pinot Noir, and I can say that this 2023 is a much finer iteration of this wine.
Cherry, raspberry, kind of succulent, but fresh too, with some spice, perfume, and quiet autumnal notes. It’s medium-bodied, plenty of juicy cherry and raspberry flavour, spiced plum, a pleasing sort of floral mouth-perfume, fine-grained tannin, and a finish of very good length, a little twist of orange peel bitterness to close. I can’t quite decide on 93 or 94 points, but either way, it’s a strong vintage for this wine. Drink 2024-2030+
