Central Otago, NEW ZEALAND
$105. 00
$1260.00 Dozen
ABV: 13.5%
Closure: Cork

Burn Cottage is a family-owned, biodynamically farmed 10-hectare vineyard set in the foothills of the Pisa Range in New Zealand’s Central Otago. With consulting help from Ted Lemon, of Littorai fame, the first blocks were planted in 2003 to Pinot Noir with the balance made up of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. The property is managed holistically, incorporating cattle, chickens, bees, and native fauna to create a balanced environment for grape cultivation.
The Burn Cottage Estate Vineyard was planted with a mixture of clones and rootstocks on varying aspects, soils, and exposures, all contributing to the complexity of the site, and ultimately the wine. Handpicked fruit is fermented with 10% whole bunches for 17 days before being pressed to French oak barrels (24% being new oak) for maturation.

Other Reviews….
Baked strawberries, pomelo zest and potpourri with underlying sweet spices of red licorice and ground cloves. Medium-bodied, finely-grained silky tannins with refreshing acidity. A hint of tomato leaf notes at the end. Zesty and flavorsome. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. It sits on the palate nicely—evenly weighted, and it spools through the long finish... yes! 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2023 – 2036.
