The Sangreal Vineyard is the oldest planting (1994) on a north-facing slope of red ironstone on the surface going to limestone to bluestone below. The rows run north to south, gaining full sun exposure throughout the day and resulting in prettier, more perfumed wines. It’s always the first vineyard to be harvested and is consistently made with 70% whole bunch and aged in 70% new oak for 18 months.
Bright red to dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Soaring out of the glass are perfumed aromatics of violets, red cherries, winter strawberries and a whiff of sour cherries which are complimented by subtle clove, forest floor and spicy cedar. Silky on entry, intense red cherry, red plum and winter strawberry fruits fan across the palate with all the grace of a peacocks tail. Concentrated and powerful, the back half picks up accents of clove, vanillin cedar, forest floor and spice. Seamless tannin integration with a long seductive conclusion that has a velvet smooth feel to it.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
