Tyrconnell Madeira Cask 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)

Riverstown, Dundalk, IRELAND
$145. 00
Bottle
$1740.00 Dozen
ABV: 46%

Located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, Cooley is Ireland's only independent Irish owned distillery. Converted in 1987 from an older potato alcohol plant by John Teeling and other investors, Cooley only distils their whiskey twice, not three times, as is the norm for many other Irish producers. They employ two copper pot stills with large necks, which according to the distillery, increases the time it takes for spirits to pass through. The result is a 'more refined and milder' whiskey.

The Cooley Company has won over 300 medals since opening. Other awards they have received include "European Distiller of the Year" in 2008 and 2009 and "Distillery of the Year" in 2008 from the International Wine and Spirit Competition, and "Distillery of the Year" in 2010 from Malt Advocate magazine.

Once owned by the Watts family, the historic Tyrconnell label (named after a successful racehorse) was originally a best selling brand in the United States before Prohibition. This limited edition has been initially matured in American oak and then finished for an extra 6 to 8 months in ex Madeira casks. It was awarded a 'Double Gold Medal' at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2011 and a 'Gold Medal' and 'Best In Class' at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2010.

Tasting note: Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Opens shyly before presenting a beguiling bouquet including cut grass, char grilled pineapple, cocoa and vanilla. Lean and relatively dry through out, yet with good depth, the palate offers a fabulous communion of two genres, especially towards the finish when the dry, salty, nutty qualities of the wine express themselves beyond the spirit. Hints of tropical fruit at the finish add a unique twist. Deliciously different Irish. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Complex on the nose, and the flavors just dance on the palate. This whiskey is bright, cleanly malty, and quite fruity with a tropical accent -- peach, mango, cantaloupe, sultana, and caramelized pineapple. Balanced by notes of honey, vanilla cream, and soft coconut. The best Cooley whiskey I have ever tasted! 93 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Vol. 17, #3) Reviewed by: John Hansell size>
