Talisker Port Ruighe (Port Finished) Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
"...my new favorite in the Talisker range... a hint of port compete with subtle smoky notes opening up a completely new taste experience." - whiskybase.com
Launched in 2013 as a follow up to the heavily peated Talisker Storm, Port Ruighe (pronounced ‘Port Ree’) combines whiskies matured in European and x-Bourbon refill casks, blended and transferred into x-Ruby Port casks for finishing. Intended as a change of pace for the brand, the result is similar to peaty whisky drawn from sherry casks - think salt, sea, maritime smoke, Turkish Delight and red fruits - softer and sweeter than other Taliskers with super drinkability and less pepper kick than the ten year old classic. Unless you can’t tolerate the slightest touch of peat, this is unlikely to be polarising. The only drawback with Port Ruighe has been erratic supply. At the time of writing, it's sold out at most retailers globally, and no longer appears on the Talisker website, leading some to believe it's discontinued. 45.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Sails into Port without changing course. 85 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020
...Smoky bacon crisps on the early nose, damp earth, ripe plums, and plain chocolate. Sweeter in time, with a marine note, and black pepper. Smoky peat on the palate, with a spicy, sweet red wine edge. Medium in length, with oak, black coffee, and more dark chocolate. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...The Port Ruighe is clearly my new favorite in the Talisker range. Sweet mildness and a hint of port compete with subtle smoky notes and open up a completely new taste experience. Even if, unlike many other lovers, I can rarely taste the countless flavor nuances of a whisky, with the Port Ruighe I at least have an association and the feeling of washing down a bucket of dried fruit with mild sherry while the campfire smoke from the neighbor's garden rises into my nose. Conclusion: Excellently balanced composition that knows how to delight the nose, the palate and the finish. - whiskybase.com
