Old Forester is Brown-Forman’s first brand, founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown. In 2020, in its 150th year, the company expanded its highly successful Single Barrel program to offer a 100 proof and unfiltered barrel strength option for customers who purchase full barrels from the distillery. Whiskey Hunt Australia's first Old Forester single barrel sold out in under thirty minutes. The importer's second release was also quickly snapped up. Thankfully, we reserved a modest allocation of the original 222 bottles that arrived in Australia. Hand picked from a selection of three casks in October 2020 (with help from Brown Forman), the liquid in barrel #5390 was distilled from a mashbill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley. Initially it smells and tastes relatively young with an accent on rock candy, gobstoppers, pepper and new oak - which tells you it probably needs some time to breathe. 5-10 minutes in the glass adds complexing notes of iced tea, liquorice, cherry ripe chocolate and apply rye. The style feels fairly typical for Old Forester: full flavoured, with a good balance of oaky vanilla and oily rye input. The lengthy finish shows some grip and kick with an almost resinous quality, followed by dark chocolate, hazelnut, leather and late cola. Given enough time to develop in the glass, this savoury expression should please Bourbon lovers seeking something beyond sweet oak and simple corn. Matured in warehouse H on floor 6 and bottled at 50% Alc./Vol. Limited to one bottle per customer.
