Heartwood The Beast is Back Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (500ml)
Whisky writer, Luke McCarthy of the Oz Whisky Review said of the Beast bottlings: "They're meant to be fun, challenging, a bit odd. Sort of, well, beastly. The reason they work is down to the patience, creativity and the quality of the casks Duckett throws at them." Unashamedly incendiary in style, the consensus amongst several writers is that they were something of a watershed for the Australian whisky industry, setting the bar for a lot of upstart micro-distillers. In this case the source of the liquid is not disclosed. We do know it was initially matured in a 100 litre apera cask before being re-racked into another 100 litre apera cask. Accounting for the (slightly) lower than normal ABV, Duckett explained: "It's associated with decanting from the first 1st fill sherry barrel to a second 1st fill sherry barrel, as the initial spirit in the initial barrel started to take on tannin (horrible quality) at a very young age. Cured the problem and gave us a double dose of sherry. Those who do not like sherry, need not apply”. Bottled in July 2020, 140 bottles made up the release. 59.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
