Tasting note: Is this the last of the Local Barley series? There are rumours that it's going to be continued. For the time being, consider it over. The fifth edition comes matured in 77% Bourbon, 20% Sherry & 3% Port casks and was made from optic barley grown at High Cattadale farm, a few miles outside Campbeltown. Barley sugar on the nose, and possibly more coastal character than previous releases - peatier too. Mineraly / briney / oily and fruity at the same time with later inhalations releasing lanolin and sweet barley as well as hints of dried mango and lemon peel. The coastal attack hits the tongue like a freshly shucked oyster. It's thick and oily with a coating of sweet peat (more so than other LBs). The salty crescendo is juicy and zesty, while the aftertaste is oily, slightly tarry then ashy, drying and long. If it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of the earlier bottlings in the series, it's not far off. Young whisky rarely gets better. 56.2% Alc./Vol. 9000 bottles produced.
