2008 Claxton's Exploration Series Macduff 12 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Tasting note: If you've been enjoying single malts for decades but have never heard of Macduff, you're probably not alone. Founded in 1958 or 1962 (depending on your source) it's a toddler by Speyside standards. The spectacular burnished copper colour of this all-sherry matured expression belies a relatively young malt. Fruit'n'nut chocolate, vanilla and dried coconut on the nose follow in a full flavoured, easy going dram featuring dried fruits, baking spices and an interesting hint of white chocolate to finish. Medium long, with dried fruits lingering. In the vein of medium-sherried styles. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from Claxton's... Nose: Dry oak, marzipan and Christmas spices. Rich Sherry notes; dark chocolate. Palate: Rich and viscous at first. Masses of chocolate notes with more dry oakiness. Finish: Long, spicy and lingering. The dryness returns at the end.
