Tasting note: Located within the stunning Glenlivet Estate, Tomintoul produces a medium sweet, classic Speyside distillate with a light, floral and malty character. This release was matured in an ex-Bourbon cask followed by a 13-month finishing in an Amontillado barrel from Josafer Tanoaria. Amontillados rarely come to market (Glenmorangie's 'Dornoch' springs to mind), but Gregor Hannah clearly revels in releasing freak casks. This deeply coloured 15 year old delivers lots of sherry character - Walnut fudge, hazelnuts, a little yeastiness along side salted bran crackers... and it just gets richer and more chocolatey with extended air contact. Malty and sweetish on entry, developing texture along with flavours of wine soaked pears and fruity dark chocolate as well as suggestions of orange zest, glace cherries, Turkish Delight and mixed nuts through the finish. Minimal spirit heat and great balance. This is what indie whiskies are all about: complex and pretty extreme, so nothing like Glenmorangie's more reserved effort, but give it time to show its best. 55.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 251 bottles.

Notes from Gregor Hannah... On the Nose: Deep and rich with notes of leather armchair, autumnal fruit, amaretto and brewing coffee. On the Palate: Maraschino cherries and chocolate caramels with an orange bitters and honey character. Finish: Apple sauce developing into orange peel with oak tannins and treacle toffee.
