With a reputation as one of the biggest malts in the business, these middle-aged Ben Nevis will have fans smiling. Not just for the giveaway pricing, but also because the late 1990s output from this distillery has been described amongst the most characterful of their time. The single casks on offer were distilled in 1998. All are cask strength and non chill filtered. Each cask delivers an abundance of distillery character. These are simply crazy deals given the credentials on offer. At $200 you might think twice. At half that price, you've got the whisky buys of the year. These are sure to further fuel demand for a distillery that's already garnered a quiet cult following. One parcel only. Never to be repeated.
Tasting note: Distilled in December 1998 and bottled March 2015, cask 11394 offers one of the more distinctive bouquets in this set: caney, gristy and green-wood like before developing with orange zest, milk chocolate, hints of lanolin and stone fruits. The highlight here is the melt in your mouth delivery; stewed apples, pears and hints of tangerine peel combine in a spiced-up finish but minimal water softens the attack. Possibly more wood input and (only slightly) shorter than the rest, but still very good. 51.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 296 bottles. Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Grassy, floral, vanilla. Palate: Green apples, kumquats, hay. Finish Long, soft and sweet.
