From a time before Bruichladdich had anything resembling a core range, the majority of the output from the distillery was predominantly one-off releases. Through most of the 80s, Bruichladdich were only operating one day out of the week. Blacker Still was released in 2006 alongside Redder Still (2007) and Golder Still (2008), showcasing the effect that different cask influences had on the whiskies' colouring, with appropriately coloured bottles and tins to match. Blacker Still refers to the colour of the inside of their wash still, implying that internal patina has a part to play in developing character, much like a well-seasoned pan. Matured for 20 years in Oloroso Sherry casks, an impressive figure considering their output at the time. One only. 50.7% Alc./Vol.

Lots of presence on the palate, the whisky staying maybe slightly in the background and the sherry and the port playing the first parts here. Medium long finish, frankly winey and ‘cooked’ now but still in a nice way. A good version, for genuine sherry lovers.
