1986 Adelphi Strathmill 24 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (700ml)

A distillery unknown to most, with the majority of its produce destined for Blends. The Strathmill distillery eventuated in the whisky boom of the late 19th century, where almost thirty malt whisky distilleries were founded (some familiar names include, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, Aberfeldy and Glen Moray). It commenced as a Flour and Corn mill factory in 1823 which was converted under the name Glenisla-Glenlivet. In 1895 the gin producers W. & A. Gilbey bought the distillery and changed the name to Strathmill ('the mill in the long valley'), which today falls under the Diageo umbrella.

Today, the malt supplies blends like J&B with very few single malts surfacing. Independent bottlers are the main source for whisky fans to sample its delights, which have been referred to by the likes of whisky writer Michael Jackson as "the whisky's answer to orange Muscat" (Michael Jackson- Malt Whisky Companion).

This 1986 Strathmill has been released by Adelphi, bottled at a cask strength of 58.6% after 24 years in the cask. This is are relative bargain in every sense of the word.Extremely limited Stocks - 168 Bottles Produced

A deep gold colour with moderate to good beading. This starts with a very light nose, and a little nose prickle, unusual for a whisky of this age. Underneath, we noted pale sponge cake with whipped cream, topped with fresh strawberries (similar to our previous bottling of Strathmill which we suggested might be suitable for enjoying at Wimbledon). Becoming dusty with water, possibly a hint of cedar-wood cigar wrapper; only the dried edges of the sponge cake remain. Full and creamy in the mouth; sweetish, with vanilla sponge and dry coconut in the dryish finish, and milk chocolate in the aftertaste. - Notes sourced from Adelphi.
