The Clydeside Distillery Stobcross Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 46%Ever since the Kinclaith stills at Strathclyde fell silent, Glasgow has been without a malt whisky distillery. The city's whisky renaissance recently took another step forward with The Clydeside, the second distillery to open there in over 100 years. Owners, Morrison Glasgow Distillers have been synonymous with single malts for generations. The family’s independent bottling business, A.D. Rattray, traces its roots back to 1868. For their latest project, the family worked closely with the late Dr. Jim Swan to refine wood selections and develop a ‘light but fruity spirit’, less grassy than other Lowland malts, instead veering toward a spicier Speysider. The concept was "...to reflect Glasgow’s past in bringing tobacco and spices to the UK." An inaugural distillation took place on the 6th November 2017 and the distillery's first whisky was bottled in 2021.
Like other newcomers (think Lochlea, Raasay or The Hearach), Clydeside's presentation is sleek and modern, designed to stand out on the shelves. A nautical theme is evident on the labels, split in half by a horizontal stripe, echoing the Plimsoll line along a ship’s side indicating the maximum depth to which it may be safely immersed when loaded with cargo. The whiskies arrive reasonably priced and it's pleasing to note that they're bottled at a minimum of 46%, without chill filtration.
The Stobcross is named after a historic cross which once marked the route to Dumbarton Rock. The whisky is matured in a combination of Bourbon and Sherry casks. It's a fresh, lively style with floral notes, tropical tones, orchard fruits and hints of white pepper.
Other reviews... The Stobcross is obviously youthful, and it’s light, fruity and uniformly enjoyable, but to expect anything more than this would be unreasonable – it’s the first output from a completely new distillery. The flavour components that I’m finding show it’s got the makings of really interesting whisky – the tobacco whiffs in particular, but it does, like Wally said when we were chatting about it recently, feel like it could have benefitted with a little bit longer in the cask if only to develop the hints of flavours that always seem to be at arms reach. You want to grab hold of them and give them a good scrutinising, but they remain elusive, distant and frustratingly fleeting. A good opening gambit however and, with more time spent in the casks to develop the interesting flavour signatures, there’s no doubt the spirit flowing from the Clydeside Distillery will deliver the experience hinted at in the Stobcross. There’s a lot to be excited about and, with new and re-established distilleries popping up each year, Clydeside is perfectly positioned to become a prominent presence in what’s becoming Glasgow’s 21st century industrial revolution. - dramface.com

2013 The Ultimate Edradour 9 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Cask #276Highlands, SCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 58.7%We've imported a number of these incredibly dark Edradours over the last few years, however, at least in terms of colour, cask #276 probably tops the lot. Edradours in this series are reported to be of consistently high quality with sweet, sultry notes of wood, honey, dates, tobacco and liquorice typical of the flavour profiles. A rep for the bottler, Van Wees, mentioned that they're having an increasingly hard time procuring top casks, so don't be surprised if we see much less of these in the future. Matured in a first-fill sherry butt for nine years, the yield for this edition was 672 bottles at 58.7% Alc./Vol. And yes, the colour is all natural! Non chill filtered. Extremely limited stocks.
Since 1994 The Ultimate Spirits Company has been bottling gems from the likes of Port Ellen, Springbank, Ardbeg and Bowmore. The company's primary objective remains the seeking out of interesting (and foremost) very tasty casks, some old, some younger but always worth the spend. Founded in 1921 as tobacco merchants and currently in the capable hands of Maurice van Wees, who started working in the whisky business in 1987, he follows in the footsteps of his father, Han van Wees - the first man to import Single Malt into the Netherlands in the 1960s (before then, only blends were available). It has been quipped that Han ‘taught the Netherlands how to drink whisky’. He was appointed with the Master of the Quaich in 2018.
Nowadays, a key characteristic Van Wees looks for when reviewing casks is that the wood influence should not be overpowering. "For example", explains Maurice "we have bottled many casks of Rosebank from straight bourbon barrels, the vanilla only complemented the Rosebank character. Others like our Longmorn bottlings from oloroso sherry butt stood out for their complexity and dark sherry influences... We have bottled over a thousand casks now and all of them are my babies. Bottled for enjoying life and bringing pleasure to people all over the globe." When asked if he has any personal favourites, Van Wees adds, "I believe every distillery can make great whisky as long as it is matured in a good cask. Too many bottlers rely on a distillery name to raise interest but we believe only a good cask can bring you good single malt which in it’s turn will make people notice it. Lately I was personally amazed again by the taste of one of our Glen Spey bottlings. Around the same time I was offered a cask of Ardbeg which I declined because the spirit was not good enough. So it differs every time but bottom line is that an independent bottling should bring you that bit extra."

2022 Torbreck DescendantBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 15%Closure: CorkFrom a single vineyard planted in 1994 using cuttings from Run Rig vineyards, Descendant is a co-fermented blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier matured for 20 months in second fill French oak barriques previously used for Run Rig.
Quite possibly the best Descendant yet, this is a gorgeously seductive blend of Shiraz and Viognier.
Dense pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass with tremendous potency are intoxicating aromas of dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate followed by whiffs of dried apricot, toasty vanillin oak, fennel and spice. Rich and plush, the palate is a super concentrate of dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate with notions of honeysuckle, spicy vanillin oak and earthy fennel extending through the back half. Dense, opulently textured and possessing stunning power, it has velvet smooth tannins and an exceptionally long finish that’s pure decadence.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

The 2022 Descendant is a co-fermented blend of Shiraz and Viognier (8%), and the wine exudes masses of floral perfume, which translates accurately in the mouth. It is silky and intense; the tannins are ductile and pervasive, and yet they have a bloody, ferruginous note that makes their dispersion feel more like an infusion than a framework. It is chewy and weighty, without being heavy or swaggering. Awesome wine. Superb. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2042.

Lovely aromas of blackberries, violets, ink, dark chocolate, graphite, black olives, peaches and graphite. The palate is tightly wound, with silky tannins and bright acidity that is harmoniously in balance. Flavors of dark chocolate, blood plums, pomegranates and licorice root. Perfumed, savory, intense and pure. An exceptional release of this wine, with 8% viognier co-fermented with shiraz. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Etna Rosso is remarkably pretty, leading off with dusty roses and dried strawberries complicated by suggestions of violet and lavender. This flows effortlessly across the palate with floral-laced red fruits enhanced by sour citrus and spice. The 2020 lingers incredibly long yet maintains a lovely inner freshness. The 2020 is exceptionally pure and impossible to resist. Drink 2024-2028.

There’s a certain rustic charm about this Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend, sourced from various McLaren Vale subregions. Perfumed rose petal and plummy slightly earthy characters on the nose. The palate then delivers with its medium bodied plush flavour combination. Juicy crunchy fruit flavours extend to a long pleasing finish. Drink 2024-2032.

Ray Jordan – WinePilot.comNot as ferrous or savoury as the magnificent 2020. Veritable value all the same. A multitude of sub-regional sources, Blewitt Springs and Clarendon amidst. A meld of partial carbonic, a dollop of whole bunches and extended time on skins (to 30 days) for the better fruit. The oak, used small format. Licorice, sweet kirsch, thyme and rosemary sprigs. A waft of eucalyptus, drying and terse, marks the finish. A final spurt of sweetness offers respite and strident length. Drink by 2028.

Ned Goodwin – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionGrenache (52%), shiraz (30%) and Mourvèdre sourced from a range of McLaren Vale vineyards in the Blewitt Springs, Seaview, Whites Valley and Clarendon sub-regions.
This delivers. It’s svelte, fluid and run with fruit, the latter cohesive and appealing. Flavours of violets, blueberries, raspberries and flashes of florals, thyme and spice – and a touch of red licorice too – all perform swimmingly. Pop and pour and you’re good to go; it’s drinking well now. Drink 2024-2028.

Campbell Mattinson – The Wine FrontServe this in buckets! What a beauty! GSMs done well are cracking drinks and this release from **** Wines is worth bashing down the door for.
A delicious fusion of fruit, savoury delight and earthiness, this GSM is absolutely humming. Raspberries, baked blueberries and mulberries are the beating heart of this wine. There is a fabulous tempo and vibe about its carry as it moves and sways through the mouth with ease. The palate is blanketed by generous medium-bodied fruit with fine spices clinging to the edges and tingling long. An earthy undertow courtesy of the Mourvedre is measured and harmonious. Each part of the blend works in unison rather than seeking the limelight and that's precisely why I can't get enough of it. A clever wine that has been made and blended exceptionally well. Great stuff, and yes, bash the door down.

2017 Watt Whisky Campbeltown 7 Year Old Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 57.1%"...absolutely lovely! Bravo! " - whiskyfun.com
If you didn't already know, Watt Whisky are Campeltown based, so it's appropriate that they chose a local blend to commemorate their 100th cask. They've pumped up an already very good malt with more than a teaspoon of something quite special (we're informed that it's a Glen Scotia that's had a good “ladling” of 28-year-old Springbank). Fun, different and apparently, it doesn't taste immature. The yield was 246 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Attention, this was the 100th bottling from Watt Whisky aka Campbeltown Whisky Company Ltd.! That’s worth celebrating! As usual, we’re a bit late to the party, but bravo Kate and Mark! Colour: light gold. Nose: well now, this is more engaging – there’s a touch of engine oil, linseed oil, amaretti, pumpernickel spread with fresh butter, even a few tiny oysters, all layered atop the classic apple and pear base. With water: a brand-new Harris Tweed jacket. I swear. Mouth (neat): we’re back on oil, oyster shells, a few drops of petrol, a dab of light peat, and even hints of diesel and acetone, Jamaican style. Truly. With water: right, at heart it’s still apple, beer and barley. Finish: same again – apple, beer and barley – though there’s a persistent saline tang hanging in the background. Comments: absolutely lovely! Bravo! 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...You sense the youth, but this offers a good mix of Campbeltown funk, subtle peat and enough roundness to keep it accessible. Hard to fault if you’re looking for a glu-glu whisky from Watt’s home town. - whiskynotes.be

Xanadu’s Reserve range of wines represent the very best that the estate is capable of producing in a given vintage. The 2020 vintage is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot with maturation taking place in French oak (40% new) for a period of 14 months.
Exceptionally deep in colour it features a pitch black heart and deep dark red black tinged hue. What’s the point of writing anything about this wine? Really. But you’ve come this far so I’ll add the reason: It’s complete, exceptional and beguiling. The best Margaret River cabernet exemplifies those alluring characters. OK, you want to know more. It’s heady with mulberries, cassis and damson plum, wakame and squid ink. Medium bodied, plush and velvety across the palate thanks to sublime tannins with an outrageously long finish. This is irresistible. Drink by 2048.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThere have been some wonderful 2020 cabernets from Margaret River but none better than this. What a glorious statement of the region and a great vintage. Highly perfumed aromas of mulberry, dark chocolate and blackcurrant with a little plum and dried herb edging in. The palate is full-bodied with immense power. Black fruit, dark plum and some wild berry action with oak that has been almost lyrically laid. Bright and vital with a lithe expressiveness that is pure joy. Cellar 20 years.

There was so much to love in this Pinot, from its complexity to its sapidity to its long length. With a ruby hue and a slight tinge of purple, it is bright in colour but also aroma, showing bountiful red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, confectionery, forest floor and musk. The palate is full of flavour yet it’s refined and not over the top, with the brightness of fruit carrying from the first sip to the last. A highly enjoyable wine.
