Bordeaux's variety of soils and micro climates encourages the production of a broad range of wines. Without counting vin mousseux, there are six official categories: Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superieur (red and rose); the Cotes; Medoc and Graves; the Libourne region (Saint Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac); dry white wines and, lastly, the sweet whites (Sauternes.) Becoming familiar with what regions are permitted to produce which wines is a daunting learning curve for those with little experience of Bordeaux.
