Produced from 15-year-old vines, the elegant, still primary and grapy 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals notes of black currants, cassis, liquid minerals, and subtle wood in its rich, intense, medium to full-bodied personality. It should hit its prime in 2-3 years, and last for 10-15.

Greenock Creek Vineyard & Cellars, owned by Michael and Annabelle Waugh, remains one of South Australia’s iconic wineries. Start with a great terroir, add in old vine material and meticulous winemaking, and end with extraordinary results. The Seven Acres Shiraz was also aged for 28 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Tar, mineral, earth notes, smoked meat, and blueberry scents jump from the glass of this full-bodied but restrained (relatively speaking) Shiraz. On the palate it is a bit more austere than its siblings with a bit more structure and apparent acidity. As a result, it will require longer cellaring and should offer prime drinking from 2015 to 2030.

Deep garnet-black colored, Greenock Creek's 2004 Roennfeldt Road Shiraz reveals a profoundly complex nose of mulberries, warmed plums, kirsch, crème de cassis, melted chocolate, spice cake, liquored sultanas and eucalypt. The very full bodied palate is concentrated, rich and opulent, flavored with a mix of dried fruits and Indian spices coming through in layers. The acid is crisp and seamless, not overdone, while the tannins are firm, ripe and finely grained. It finishes long, spicy and exquisitely balanced. To preserve the purity / delineation of aromas and flavors, I'd recommend not drinking this wine too warm, ideally enjoying it at a temperature just above cellar temps: around 15-17 degrees C (59-63 degrees F). Drink it now to 2025+.

Very deep garnet colored, the 2006 Roennfeldt Road Shiraz is profoundly scented of warm mulberries, prunes, dark chocolate and plum pudding with an undercurrent of allspice, cinnamon stick, aniseed, mincemeat and salami plus a whiff of potpourri. Very big, voluptuous and densely packed in the mouth (coming in at 17% declared alcohol), it offers a multilayered powerhouse of spice and dried fruit flavors with very crisp acid to enliven and a medium to firm level of grainy tannins to lend support. It finishes very long, spicy and a little warm. Drinking very well now, it should cellar to 2022+.

The two Roennfeldt Road cuvees, from one of Barossa’s most esteemed addresses, appear to be the finest since the legendary 1998s. The purple-colored 2002 Roennfeldt Road Cabernet Sauvignon offers up a soaring, already complex perfume of wood smoke, spice box, scorched earth, licorice, blackberry, and black currant. This is followed by a full-bodied, opulent, seamless Cabernet with gobs of spicy black fruits, an extra dimension that only old vines can provide, and a nearly endless finish. It would be fascinating to place it in a blind tasting with the 2002 vintages of Harlan, Colgin, Bryant, and Screaming Eagle.

This is a very refined style of Shiraz – quite unlike the ‘big fruit bombs’ that are typical of McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. Opaque crimson colour with purple edges. The nose is restrained, but slowly yields aroma of confectionery, violets, black cherries, spice and marzipan. The palate is mouthfilling, flavours of black pepper, plum and blackcurrant flavours are integrated with very fine oak and cedar. The palate displays real finesse and elegance, with excellent length and supported by velvet smooth tannins and an exceptionally long aftertaste of spice, blackberries and liquorice. Cellar 5-6 years.

Dense and brooding when first released, it has already evolved into a highly sophisticated marriage of fruit and oak on bouquet and palate; the latter's excellent savoury tannin structure balances the lashings of opulent fruit.

Heartland wines is the creation of a group of leading South Australian wine industry identities including viticulturistGeoff Hardy and wine maker Ben Glaetzer. The Directors Cut is the flagship wine of Heartland wines produced fromexceptional parcels of Shiraz from their Limestone Coast vineyard. The name “Directors Cut” actually has nothing to dowith movies or a famous film director, instead it refers to the prime cut of shiraz fruit selected from each vintage bythe directors of the company. The “cut” also refers to the practice of pruning back vines to lower yields and obtain the most concentrated fruit flavours.

Tasting Notes: A magnificent red. Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Superb aroma of vanilla, blackberry and spice, followed by a hint of liquorice. The palate is an explosion of flavour. ELECTRICALLY CHARGED RED VINUOUS POWER FROM 2001 HENRY’S DRIVE – A TRIUMPH FOR SPARKY!

One of the most exciting new developments on the Australian Wine scene – ‘electrically charged’ you might say – has been the creation of Henry’s Drive wines. The wines are made by the dynamic husband and wife team, Sparky & Sarah Marquis, who were responsible for the creation of Fox Creek wines in McLaren Vale.
Henry’s Drive vineyards are located in Padthaway and owned by the Longbottom family, third generation farmers and viticulturalists.
The region is a picturesque plain approximately 80 km North of Coonawarra in South Australia, and was first settled in 1847 by Robert Lawson. Padthaway’s climate is Mediterranean while its soils consists of red brown earth over clay and limestone; as unique as Coonawarra’s own world famous ‘terra rossa’ and rendzina soils. The population of Padthaway remains tiny, with 218 residents. Conversely, 3500 hectares (nearly 9000 acres) are planted under vine and oddly enough, the region also produces 8500 tonnes of onions annually! It was not until 1963, when Karl Seppelt purchased land just South of Padthaway that the region became established as a grape growing district proper. Soon after, in 1968 Lindemans and Hardys followed Seppelt’s lead, and today Australia’s leading wine companies either own vineyards or purchase grapes from the district. The ‘electric excitement’ associated with Henry’s Drive Wines all began at Roseworthy Agricultural College. It was there, on their first day that Sparky and Sarah fell in love at first sight. The partnership has since been a huge success.

There is an aspect of the couple’s winemaking that never fails to excite and their motto has been to create wines that incite a “Wow!” response. The 2001 Henrys Drive Reserve Cabernet and Reserve Shiraz are very much “Wow” wines, supercharged with the electric exuberance and voluptuous flavour that Sparky and Sarah seem to deliver on such a consistent basis. Inspiration and perspiration are their allies, with the final results being a summation of their winemaking philosophy which states that 90% of the quality of wine is a direct result of vineyard practise, with the balance determined by vision, planning and emotional commitment. This month we have chosen to run both the Reserve reds for the Vintage Direct front cover due to their exceptional quality. It’s not that we can’t make up our minds, it’s that they are both winemaking triumphs.

THE 2001 VINTAGE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA SURPASSES EVEN THE GREAT 1998 VINTAGE!
THE RESULT IS A PAIR OF OPULENT, SUPER CONCENTRATED FRUIT BOMBS & A COLLECTOR’S MUST!

    color>

2001 vintage conditions in Padthaway were very hot, necessitating very strict vineyard management programs. The timely application of water, minimising vine stress during flowering and variason are vital in order to maximise flavour profile, and avoid overripe fruit or jammy character. The 2001 Reserve Shiraz was matured in 100% new American oak for 12 months using a variety of toast levels, thus creating additional layers of flavour complexity.

Tasting Notes: A wine of incredible power & concentration. The 2001 Henry’s Drive wines are further testament to the greatness of the spectacular 2001 vintage. Deep purple black opaque colour with oil like viscosity. Perfumed nose displaying aromas of blackberry, plum, vanilla, confectionary, liquorice, and spice. The palate is an opulent explosion of rich ripe fruit – super saturated with a thick, creamy, silky-smooth, almost oil like texture. The wine displays a degree of voluptuousness, opulence, power and liqueur like concentration that only the dynamic winemaking team Sparky & Sarah Marquis can deliver. Flavours of blackberry, plum, liquorice, confectionary, spice, toasty oak and pepper. Fine grained velvet smooth tannins with very long blackberry, pepper and confectionary aftertaste.
A blockbuster Shiraz and stunning follow up to the exceptional 2000 Reserve Shiraz.

It is hard to imagine a wine delivering more bang for your buck than this wine. It is bigger and richer than the superb 2001, delivering more of everything, almost too much. If the 2002 Henry’s Drive Shiraz can be described as a ‘three course meal with cigar included’ then this wine takes on an added dimension – it’s a ‘five course banquet followed by cigar and cognac!’Totally opaque black crimson colour with deep black crimson hue. Intense nose with aroma of dark chocolate, violets, mocca, spiced plum, blackberry and vanilla emerging – a superb sniff! Explosive palate – flavours of mocca, spice, liquorice, plum, dark chocolate, toasted oak and black cherry smothered in an ‘oily viscous’ mouthfeel. Robert Parker's Review
The 2002 Shiraz Reserve tastes like a dry vintage port. It may be too much for those with a European palate (but then, I’m a Francophile with a European-styled palate and I loved it). It is flamboyant, extraordinarily rich, full-bodied, and intense, with gobs of blackberry and currant fruit backed up by extravagant levels of glycerin. The oak is largely concealed by the magnificent wealth of fruit. This is classic Australian Shiraz at its finest and is not duplicated anywhere else in the world, so enjoy it for what it is. It should drink well for a decade.

Hill of Grace is a unique delineated single historic vineyard. The famous century-old Hill of Grace vines were planted around the 1860s by an ancestor, Nicolaus Stanitzki, in rich alluvial soil in a shallow fertile valley just north-west of the winery. The vineyard lies opposite a beautiful old Lutheran Church, built of local field stone, which was euphoniously named Gnadenberg, meaning 'Hill of Grace'.

1996 was an outstanding vintage with average winter rainfall (after two drought years), a mild spring with excellent flowering conditions and a dry, cool summer. The cool conditions allowed for a long slow ripening with excellent flavour development.

This is probably the best Hill of Grace produced to date – Exceptional and getting better! Opaque crimson mauve colour. The nose displays aromas of dusty mint, spice and a touch of leather. The palate is filled with superb ripe fruit. Raspberries, blueberries, vanilla, confectionary and spice fill every corner of the mouth and are amplified by fine, dry tannins, followed by a very long lingering, blackberry, liquorice, spice aftertaste. Cellar 10-15 years.

Sits on the right hand of Grange, equally deified, and now challenging its (Grange's) price; for a vintage such as 1996 no one is likely to complain. Deep red-purple; the bouquet is exceptionally rich and ripe (for the often reserved style) with lusciously sweet blackcurrant, blackberry and mint fruit cascading through to the palate. Drink by 2026.

Other than the top cuvees of Penfolds' Grange, and the old vine Grenache and Astralis from Clarendon Hills, no Australian wines are richer than these offerings from Henschke - a winery that gets my nod as one of Australia's two or three finest producers. Each of these wines coats the mouth with glorious levels of jammy fruit, extract, glycerin, and silky tannin. They are all dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied, and capable of lasting at least a decade, and in the case of the 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace, possibly 20+ years.
The 1991 Shiraz Hill of Grace Keyneton Vineyard is the most backward of the Henschke wines, with an earthy minerality, and explosive black fruits the likes of which are often seen in northern Rhone Valley wines made from ancient vines. This huge, broodingly backward, muscular, brawny, immensely concentrated yet formidably endowed wine requires another 4-5 years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years. These are awesome examples of what Australia is capable of producing. Drink 2001-2017.

Medium purple-red; the bouquet is clean, moderately intense, with faint touches of green behind the sweet berry fruit, arguably adding complexity. The palate has unexpected richness and structure, with powerful yet ripe tannins; still very closed, and may develop exceptionally well with time. The culmination of two drought winters, record spring frosts, poor fruit set and a hot, dry summer, then the coldest March on record seemed a recipe for disaster. Once again a warm April came to the rescue with very ripe grapes being harvested. Yields down by 30 per cent to 40 per cent; peppercorn-sized grapes on the bunches.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 1995 Hill of Grace has a slightly leathered, dried fruit nose that is a little tired though highlighted by notes of sandalwood, tree bark and earth, hints of leather and meat. There's a touch of barnyard on the palate and it is a bit past its peak, fading slightly with crisp acid and firm, chewy tannins through a long finish.

A significant vintage for Hill of Grace, as the last 2015 red to leave the Henschke cellar, and a wine that delivers on every ounce of its promise and then some. The nose is so complex and fragrant with trademark brown spices taking center stage, amid light espresso, sage leaves, blackberries, cinnamon, anise, orange peel, ripe dark plums, pepper, gun smoke and a gentle, dried-rose edge. The palate has such impressive layers of fine tannin that make an instantly seamless, powerful and focused impression. It has architectural style with clean lines that build and ascend out of the finish. Long, spiced blackberries and dark plums are extruded in formation with such finesse and power. The acidity holds a torch to the rich, ripe plums and blackberries, illuminating freshness at the finish. A wine that will develop in a very consistent manner and likely to be at its best some 20 years from now. A collector’s dream. Vinolok closure.

I briefly thought about just cutting and pasting the review of the 2014 into this space for the 2015 Hill of Grace Shiraz, but on further reflection, there are some differences between them—and isn't that one of the reasons we love wine? Scents of smoked meat and mocha accent notes of black olives and blackberries, joined by subtle notions of resinous herbs, while the full-bodied palate comes across as slightly weightier, richer and more velvety in texture than the 2014. Not as elegant perhaps, but more concentrated and powerful on the long, long finish. Drink 2022-2045.

Almost overwhelming in its complexity. Firm dried berry, fresh loamy earth, sanguine and roasted herb notes give this a savory profile at first. Additional details of roasted cumin seed, cinnamon, tobacco and toffee emerge, each new element building seamlessly upon the last. Dense, succulent tannins take this to the next level. Shiraz. Drink now through 2040.

The 2001 Shiraz Hill of Grace (100% Shiraz aged 18 months in 100% new French and American oak) is not a blockbuster, but rather a surprisingly elegant, full-flavored Shiraz offering notes of mocha, white chocolate, pepper, blackberry liqueur, and cassis. Fleshy and earthy, with outstanding purity, richness, and overall symmetry, it is a complex, more evolved example of this cuvee. It should age nicely for another 12-15 years.

Medium to full purple-red; a clean and rich array of black berries, spice, licorice and compatible oak, then a palate with abundant dark berry and bitter chocolate flavour, with controlled tannins and oak. Has great length and great balance; fully reflects the outstanding vintage, and has an indefinite life in front of it if well-cellared.

Bright red-ruby. Explosive if idiosyncratic aromas of tobacco, pepper, black olive, mocha and hot stones. Pungent and penetrating, with compelling flavors of raspberry, tobacco, black olive, dried rose, mocha, herbs and spices, plus a strong underlying minerality (I was variously reminded of Lafite, Haut-Brion and Ausone!). Suave and perfumed in the mouth; wonderfully ripe but dry. Finishes with noble tannins and great palate-staining length and grip. This wine is not for everyone-and a good thing, too, since it's extremely limited-but it certainly flipped my switch.

The Mount Edelstone vineyard, meaning precious gem is a single delineated historic vineyard and was planted in the 1920s on the eastern slopes of the hill of the same name, located near Keyneton high in the ranges east of the Barossa Valley. Aged vines, deep loam soil, Mediterranean climate and traditional winemaking techniques have continued to create one of Australia's most highly regarded shiraz wines. The 70-year-old dry-grown vines are low yielding producing intensity of colour, depth of fruit flavours, complexity and palate length. The Mount Edelstone wines have received awards at national wine shows each year since 1956.

    Notes sourced from Jim Barry.

The vineyard is called “Armagh” because the area in which it is situated was originally settled by the Irish and named after their homeland. The 8-acre vineyard was planted in 1968 and yields less than 1.2 tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy-gravel and receives an average rainfall of 24 inches per year. The Armagh has a reputation for excellence renowned throughout the world.

Made from 100% Shiraz. Dark red to black in colour. The nose displays raspberries, plums and a scent of oak that fills the glass. The flavours flood the mouth with rich tannins and blackcurrants that linger on the palate. The rich fruit is balanced by maturation in new American and French oak. This wine is ideal for long term cellaring and can be cellared 10-15 years. It is suggested that the wine is allowed to 'breathe' a minimum of two hours before consuming to fully appreciate the distinctive flavours and aromas. If the wine is older than five years, decanting is recommended. 14.5% alcohol volume.

    Other Reviews.....
Offers sumptuous power and richness, plum, blackberry, dark chocolate and earth on the bouquet and layered palate alike, a touch of red cherry perfectly ripened, with the oak in the back seat where it should be. The palate is rich and luscious, with layer-upon-layer of berry fruit and tannins to sustain it for the long haul. Limited restaurant availability. Drink by 2023.

The Armagh vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked. Yields are less than 2 tonnes per acre. The 2005 vintage was considered to be an outstanding year in the Clare Valley. The season produced near perfect growing conditions. Spring was warm, but the maximum temperatures over January and February were slightly cooler than usual and there were useful falls of rain that kept vines looking healthy.

(Tasted in 2009) The wine was matured in a combination of 80% new French oak and 20% new American oak for a period of 18 months. Black purple colour, totally opaque and glass staining. Intense, very perfumed and youthful nose with notes of freshly crushed blackberry and plum, with liquorice, confectionary and violets. The palate is full bodied, super concentrated and tremendously rich with a powerhouse of flavour possessing explosive length and depth. Opulently textured with strong liquorice, aniseed, blackberry, confectionary and blackpepper flavours. Fine grained tannins with long liquorice, aniseed aftertaste. A superb Armagh.

Jim Barry’s flagship is the famous Armagh Shiraz. The 2005 Shiraz “Armagh” was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1964 on its own roots. It spent 18 months in French and American oak and was bottled without fining or filtration. It has an alluring bouquet of cedar, Asian spices, pepper, boysenberry, plum, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied yet elegant Shiraz with a velvety texture and impeccable balance. It offers up gobs of ripe fruit flavors, serious depth and concentration, and a very long finish. It will continue evolving with an additional 6-8 years of cellaring and drink well through 2035.

Retasted 16/06/2017: Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark brick red hue. The nose offers up aromas of liquorice, ripe blackberries and dark plums over vanillin oak, hints of dark chocolate and leather with spice end notes. Rich and plush in texture with excellent depth, concentration and silken tannins the palate boasts mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, ripe blackberries and dark plums which show surprisingly little signs of development over vanillin oak, subtle mocha and spice. Long spicy dark plum, liquorice, blackberry, vanillin oak and faint earth aftertaste. Drink now.

    A magnificent wine.

Kaesler winemaker Reid Bosward has in the past resisted using American oak in the production of most of their top end reds, preferring to use French oak. However, the outstanding 2002 vintage resulted in wines from the Bogan vineyards of such fruit weight, ripeness and structure that it was decided American oak would have to be used. The wine was matured for 18 months in 100% new Pennsylvanian oak, with a medium to heavy toast and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration. Retasted January 2011:
The colour of this wine is holding up extremely well. Magnificent black crimson with black heart and very deep black crimson hue. Lifted aromas of aniseed, liquorice and vanilla that gain intensity with air time, followed by some dark blackberry and confectionary notes. Monumental palate weight and concentration with opulent flavours of aniseed and liquorice dominate followed by dark blackberry, confectionary and spice. Very fine grained, almost velvet like tannins. The 2002 Shiraz The Bogan, which is aged 22 months in American oak before being bottled unfiltered, is a spectacular, classic example of Barossa Shiraz. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a huge bouquet of white flowers, toast, blackberry liqueur, blueberries, and creosote. Packed with intensely concentrated black fruits and a spicy complexity, it is the antithesis of elegance. While still an infant in terms of development, it is hard to know for sure, but I suspect it will become more civilized and elegant as it evolves, and should last for 15-20+ years.

Amazing depth of colour looking more like a 3 or 4 year old red rather than 10 year old. Super saturated inky black core with a very deep bright dark red black hue. Heady aromas of liquorice, ripe blackberries and perfectly ripened black cherries waft from the glass followed by delicate dark chocolate infusions, vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Incredibly concentrated with a structure to match, the palate is slammed with an abundance of rich luscious fruit that includes liquorice, ripe blackberries and black cherries which prevail over a back drop of spicy toasted vanillin cedar and confectionary with a pepper infused finish. The tannins appear velvet like beneath the enormous wealth of fruit yet there’s a muscular feel to them which provides the framework to this massively endowed and amazingly powerful wine. Date Tasted 21/08/1999: Another extraordinary vintage - in fact the 105th from this tiny 4 acre vineyard block. In July 1891 Fred and Herbert Kay collected Shiraz cuttings from Thomas Hardys Tintara Vineyard and began to plant Block 6 in 1892. Twelve acres were planted, of which only four acres remain today. These 100 year old plus vines produce wines of remarkable quality and concentration, however the trade of is that they are very low yielding.

The 1997 vintage yielded only 8.78 tonnes, that's equivalent to 2.19 tonnes an acre and a guarantee that this wine will be an essay of concentrated flavour. Opaque crimson purple colour. There is a magnificence on the nose that is reminiscent of the 1971 Penfolds Grange - a tiny trace of volatility that lifts the fruit to a new aromatic height. Wonderful aromas of vanilla, spice, ripe blood plums, blackberries, liquorice and liquorice allsorts. A great whiff! The palate is everything that can be expected from grandfather vines that are cropped at a very low level. Super ripe concentrated flavours of blood plums, rich ripe blackberries and blackcurrants with doses of fresh liquorice and pronounced blackpepper in the background. Fine grained tannins, near perfect, with excellent balance and long lingering aftertaste of blackberries and spicy plums. The production in 1997 is about half that of previous vintages and thus stocks are extremely limited. Cellar 8-10 years.

This wine is produced from 106 Year old vines, and has now reached international cult status. Production is limited to a minuscule 12.35 tonne which equates to under 900 cases for a very appreciative Global audience. In the old days that production probably meant that within Australia there was something like ten buyers for every bottle produced, today there are hundreds of wine enthusiasts globally wanting to get their hands on this viticultural treasure.Age is no indicator of wisdom or quality, but in special people age confers great wisdom and in special vineyards, the vines that remain are capable of producing extraordinary, concentrated wine.Totally opaque, purple colour. The Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz was dense, this wine has at least double density, astonishing! Superb aromas fill the nose with concentrated notes of ripe plums, confectionery, vanilla, spice and liquorice allsorts. The palate structure is monumental and is typical of the outstanding 1998 vintage. The tannins are firmer than they have been for some time, but well supported by the opulent fruit flavour. Immense flavours of vanilla, plum, spice, dark chocolate, mocca and a very strong blackpepper explosion on the back palate which moves all the way through to the aftertaste. An Extraordinary taste experience. Needless to say stock are extremely limited.

    Other Reviews....
I have to wonder if this wine would not be even more extraordinary and close to perfection if it were aged in French oak. American oak is still the big deal in Australia, despite the exceptional success the more subtle French oak has had nearby at Clarendon Hills. The 1998 shows the aggressive toasty oak in the nose, but there is no doubt that is going to be completely absorbed in another 3-5 years of cellaring, given the wine's mammoth concentration and extravagant richness. The wine has a black/purple color and an extraordinarily sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with spice box, licorice, and a touch of pepper. A monster wine on the palate, and still uncivilized and too young to actually enjoy drinking, this wine should be at its peak by 2006 and keep for up to 2020 or so. A great vintage for Block 6 Shiraz.

THIS IS THE BLOCK 6 REINCARNATED. In 1992 Colin Kay celebrated the 100th anniversary of Block 6 Shiraz, in the year 2000 the vines are now 106 years old. Colin honoured his ancestors by replanting part of the original vineyard to Shiraz, from cuttings made from Block 6 vines. The 1998 is the second release from this new vineyard and has proven to be an enormous success. The colour is almost as intense as the Block 6, and there are certainly strong parallels between the wines. Totally opaque brick red crimson mauve colour, with a solid black heart. Superb nose, with aroma of ripe plum, liquorice, spice and confectionery. A classic big McLaren Vale red. Fine grained, firmish tannins, followed by very long warmish aftertaste of vanilla, plum and dark chocolate. Cellar 3-4 years.

Readers should be aware that the Kay Brothers produced a Shiraz Hillside that is aged in 100% new American oak and made from relatively young vines that are the same clone as the Shiraz planted in Block 6. It is very much made in the style of the Block 6, it just does not have the old vines and single block acclaim.

The Hillside Shiraz is produced from vines propagated from the original Kays Block 6 Vineyard and in spite of the fact that the cuttings are virtually a ‘vegetative photo copy’ of the original vines, the Block 6 and Hillside wines are quite different, yet similar. The difference would be in part attributable to the age of the vines together with differences in terroir (no matter how close to the original block they are planted). Minor differences in soil minerality and moisture stress would contribute to a different flavour profile.

Opaque black crimson colour with deep brick red crimson hue. The nose is delightful, with perfumed sniff of dark chocolate, violet, ripe plum, spice, vanilla and white pepper. The full degree of complexity is yet to be developed on the palate and this will happen over the next few years. Flavours of dark chocolate, mocca, blackpepper and spice fill the palate. Fine dry tannin structure, followed by a very long aftertaste of dark chocolate, coffee, mocca, blackpepper and liquorice. STELVIN CAP.

A glorious example of South Australian Shiraz is the 2002 Shriaz Hillside. Made from relatively young vines (8-34 years of age), this flamboyant, pleasant 2002 is impossible to resist. Already rocking and rolling, it has 10-15 years of aging potential. A deep plum/ruby/purple hue is followed by glorious aromas of black fruits, flowers, dusty, loamy, truffle-like scents, and a classic combination of pepper and licorice. The wine saturates and palate with a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol (15%). The finish is opulent and multilayered.

The 2000 Kay Brothers Block 6 represents the 108th vintage for the original planting. Opaque black purple, mauve colour, with strong glass cling. The wine is a joyous expression of ripe shiraz, with aroma of plums, spice and liquorice, followed by an end note of leather, earth, tar and prune. The palate has enormous body weight – the hallmark of Kay Brothers Block 6. The oak seems a touch forward this year, and is followed by layers of mocha, dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla and ripe plums. The tannins are firm, in fact much firmer than that of previous vintages, and should see a reasonably long life ahead for the wine. Very long aftertaste of spicy oak, plum and liquorice.
    Cellar 5-8 years plus. (2007- 2010)

One of Australia’s most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. Tarry, chewy, and fleshy, the 2003 Shiraz Hillside has a bit more punch (15% alcohol) as well as a sappy character that is not present in the regular bottling. It is a broad, savory, expansively flavored, full-bodied Shiraz to enjoy over the next decade.

The 2005 Shiraz “Attunga 1865” is sourced from ungrafted vines planted in the Clare Valley in 1865. It spent 25 months in 100% new French oak hogsheads and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple/black, it reveals an ethereal bouquet of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, espresso, mocha, black cherry, and blackberry. This leads to a powerful, intense, yet elegant wine with a very long, seamless finish. This beautifully balanced effort will excite tasters over the next 25 years. Drink 2007 – 2032.

"ONE OF MARGARET RIVER'S GREATEST CABERNETS."1991 was an exceptional year in Margaret River - with worldclass wines being made by all the major players - Vasse Felix,Cullens, Moss Wood and Cape Mentelle. Leeuwin Estate always holdtheir wine back and the 1991 Cabernet has just been released. The wine press are lavishing praise, "This may well be the bestLeeuwin Cabernet ever released." The problem with such hype isthat it creates expectations that may not be achievable. In factthe whole Leeuwin concept is about mind altering expectations. The deliberate parallel that has been created by the "ArtSeries" with Chateau Mouton Rothschild and the purchase of greatworks of Australian art and their powerful imagery of theAustralian aura create expectations that could easily bring alesser winemaker undone. Are the PR guys over the top or is thisone of the worlds great drinking experiences?IF YOU SAY YOU'RE THE BEST - YOU'RE EITHER THE BEST OR A MASTEROF DELUSION.The 1991 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet is one of the worlds greatwines and sits well alongside the memory of such great bottlesas 1982 Mouton Rothschild, 1982 Cos d' Estournel, 1978 Margaux,1961 Latour and the like. The ultimate joy is the modest price. It is totally undervalued by Australian and world standards. If Grange is worth $350, then Leeuwin Estate is its equal and more.We have to say, we first approached this wine with caution, lestwe fell under the seductive spell of its imagery and read intoit more than there was to read. The wine is one of the greatwines of the world. Deep brick red colour with dark plum / mauveedges. The nose is magnificent and indicates immediately andwithout reservation the illusive quality that English MW'S call"breed". Breed is the result of perfection of viticulture anduncompromising standards of winemaking - Bob Cartwright has gotit right. The nose displays massive ripe fruit and smoky aromas, plums, blackcurrants, cedar and a hint of earthy truffles. Thepalate is as sophisticated as the nose suggests - rich generousharmonies are played out, filling the entire palate. Superbconcentrated fruit. Blackcurrants, ripe plums, smoky cedar, darkchocolates and liquorice, a wonderful orchestra of the palate -dynamic, energetic with its very fine tannin finish. A livingmasterpiece.

Produced from 26-year old vines and aged in French oak (80% new), the 2002 Shiraz G. A. M. reveals tremendous fruit purity, but it does not yet reveal secondary nuances. The inky blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of ink, camphor, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries. While it possesses tremendous purity as well as an enormous full-bodied texture, it is neither heavy nor overbearing. This stunning Shiraz may be even better than the 2002 Savitar. Time will tell.

A wonderful Barossa Shiraz which delivers plenty of flavour without being bulky. Very deep black purple colour with purple hue. The palate flavour profile is filled with ‘joosy’ Shiraz flavours of spice, blackpepper, confectionary, plum and liquorice allsorts. The 2003 Shiraz Reiver is a 100% Shiraz from the Greenock region of Barossa cropped at 1.2 tons of fruit per acre, and aged 18 months in primarily new French barrels and small foudres. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer has fashioned an opaque purple-colored offering displaying a gorgeous bouquet of crushed rocks, violets, and blueberries that is reminiscent of the prodigious 1990 St.-Emilion, Beausejour-Duffau. It possesses a terrific texture, impressive purity, a long finish, and atypically low alcohol (14%) for such ripeness and intensity.
