Deep purple colored, the 2009 “Coach House Block” Shiraz offers a vibrant, youthful nose of ripe black cherries, crushed blueberries and red currants over aromas of allspice, cloves, cinnamon stick and toast. Very full bodied, ripe and decadently fruited in the mouth, the richness is well structured with a medium to firm level of rounded tannins and crisp acidity. The finish is very long on this voluptuous stunner. Though tempting to drink now, it should be at its best 2013 to 2021+.

The 2005 Shiraz “Roennfeldt Road – Zippy’s Block” is sourced from one of the premier addresses in the Barossa and this wine shows why. It has a profound perfume of smoky, toasty oak, pencil lead, violets, leather, licorice, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to a shockingly elegant yet large-scaled Shiraz with a velvety-texture, layer upon layer of spicy blue and black fruits, beautiful harmony, and a 60+ second finish. Words can hardly do it justice. While it can be enjoyed now, you can bury it in the cellar, revisit it in 20-25 years, and it will still be mind-bogglingly hedonistic.

From the Barossa, the 2004 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road Zippy’s Block is pedal-to-the-metal, full-throttle Shiraz fashioned from a single vineyard whose fruit used to be sold to Penfolds for use in their Grange program. There are only 200 cases of this full-bodied effort. It boasts fabulous aromas and flavors of blackberries, cassis, loamy soil, licorice, pepper, and a hint of roasted Provencal herbs. A profound effort, it should keep for 15-20 years.

The aromatics are slightly reticent but reveal aromas of pain grille, pepper, lavender, incense, game, and blueberry. It tastes of dark chocolate and coffee, blackcurrant and black licorice, with gum leaf notes adding lift. Tannin. We need to talk about tannin. It's so fine and yet so firm in this wine; it's like a wise old cope, perfect in its under-zealous application of the law. What we have here is a wine perfectly positioned to age magnificently. Drink by 2044.

Quite a bit of pine and peppermint here over red and black fruits, cedar and some rosy perfume. It’s just over medium-bodied, firm and full of grainy tannin, some rose oil perfume in with red and black fruits, has a quiet power, but also a slightly hard feel to it. A bit angular. It’s a good wine, though it’s not exactly lovable, if that makes sense. Drink 2022 - 2030.

A wine of extraordinary intensity, richness, and extract (yields were .5 tons of fruit per acre), the 2004 Shiraz Duck Muck is a totally dry red that tips the scales at 17.5% alcohol. While it pushes the limits of civilized drinking, it is neither pruny nor hot, and should be tasted with an open mind and no hidden agenda (not as easy as one might expect, especially for Eurocentric palates). Inky/purple to the rim with a glorious perfume of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and vanilla, it was aged in 100% new, heavily toasted French and American barrels for two years prior to bottling. It is nearly off the charts in terms of richness and extract. Although not for everybody, for those who are not reactionary in their tastes, it is an amazing wine that will be fascinating to follow over the next two decades.

First produced in 1991 Springflat Shiraz, along with Alan’s Cabernet, is one of two wines Wild Duck Creek Estate was founded on. Originally a single vineyard wine, Springflat Shiraz is now a blend of five specific sites; three in the north on Cambrian soils over Ironstone and Granite, and two in the south on clay loams over mudstone. Winemaker David Anderson and son Liam have a flair for producing extraordinarily rich and powerful wines that rank as some of Heathcote’s best.
Decadently rich and luxuriously textured this is a blockbuster Heathcote Shiraz.
Matured in French & American oak hogsheads for 24 months of which 40% were new. An average of 20% whole bunches were retained in the ferments to add layered aromatics and texture. Super dense inky black heart with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Penetrating the olfactory senses are intoxicating aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are followed by vanillin oak, mocha and spice. Showing incredible depth of fruit, richness and power, the full bodied palate is completely saturated with a tidal wave of lush blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Subtlety toasted vanillin oak, traces of earthy mocha and spice ensue. Velvet smooth tannins with a long blockbuster finish that’s layered with opulence.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Very perfumed the nose exhibits ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, dark chocolate and a touch of liquorice with an overlay of cedar and some spice end notes. Richly textured the palate delivers an abundance of rich ripe super concentrated fruit, yet despite the warm vintage conditions the alcohol remains a relatively modest 13.5%. Opulent flavours of dark ripe blackcurrant, dark chocolate and liquorice are to the fore with a back drop of some cedary cigar box like characters and a spicy finish. Perfectly balanced very fine grained yet solid tannin structure. Outstanding length with very long persistent aftertaste of rich ripe blackcurrant, dark chocolate, liquorice and spicy cedar.

Yalumba Signature wines represent the best of the vintage with the first wine being made in 1962. The vintage conditions were perfect for the development of Cabernet and Shiraz. Good spring rains, followed by a relatively cool growing conditions and a long cool autumn allowed the grapes to develop maximum flavour profiles as well as retaining natural acid levels. The wine is matured in a mixture of old and new American, Hungarian and French hogsheads. Opaque black purple colour with black purple hue, showing excellent cling. Superb lifted nose of vanilla and spice followed by a liquorice end note. The palate is superbly integrated with flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and spice layered with black pepper and vanilla. Fine grained tannins. Very long aftertaste of black pepper and blackcurrant.

Opaque purple-colored, it presents a perfume of pain grille, earth, tar, vanilla, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. Opulent on the palate, it has gobs of ripe fruit, complexity, superb balance, and exceptional length. It will improve over the next 8-10 years in the cellar and drink well through 2030.

From the vineyard... Classic claret-style. This is the blend on which Yarra Yering’s reputation was initially built. Always medium-bodied and low in alcohol suggesting delicacy, but nonetheless is a sleeping powerhouse of precision, intensity & concentration that demands a requisite amount of time in bottle to unfurl & allow the drinker in. Principally cabernet sauvignon with merlot, malbec and a little petit verdot added, it swallows every ounce of its 100% new oak and sniggers “Is that all you’ve got?” Consistently of the highest order in its balance and depth of flavour. Jancis Robinson has included this blend in her 1989 book of the world’s top 40 wines.
