Latest Releases From Yarra Valley's Timo Mayer

German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, and winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was his Close Planted Pinot that originally delivered on the promise; he has since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, with all the sweet and sour, stalky and spice notes that had everyone swooning when his wines first hit the market. Fairly recent addition to his Pinot line-up, the Volcanic Pinot Noir is a different expression, more delicate, pure and fragrant. The fruit comes from the volcanic terrains of the Upper Yarra Valley; notably here the fruit is all de-stemmed, whole-berry fermented rather than whole-bunch. Also part of this offer, red wine wise, are a vibrant Nebbiolo and two Syrah: a 2023 release, 100% whole bunch fermented from a small section of the Bloody Hill vineyard and a 2022 Volcanic Syrah from a 20-year-old vineyard in Gembrook. Two Chardonnays are part of this latest release and come highly recommended by both critics and Timo himself: a zippy example from the "Mayer" range and a Volcanic one from the Upper Yarra Valley, firstly released in 2021; this is a lean, refreshing and minerally-driven expression of Chardonnay.
