AnCnoc is produced at the Knockdhu Distillery which was founded in 1894 following the discovery of several springs of particularly pure water on the southern slopes of Knock Hill. When production first started, the Distillery was a showpiece. Two pot stills could turn out 2500 gallons of spirit per week, motive power being supplied by a 16 horsepower steam engine. Cottages were built for the workers and their families, creating a new community around the Distillery. Much has been done to modernise the buildings and machinery since, but very little has changed in the distillation process. The two originally designed pot stills remain, giving Knockdhu the same traditional, distinctive flavour as was first tasted almost 100 years ago.
Tasting note: Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Caresses the nose with the softest of whisky scents and one with seamless integration. Almost floral in its delivery, less the intensity. Aromas of honey and toasty grains. Some fruitiness emerging (baked apple?) Is there a whisper of peat too? Good concentration on the palate with spices adding presence to the vanilla and grassy malt. Late juicy burst. Concludes dry and light with cocoa, gentle spices and an understated fruitiness. Subdued but persistent aftertaste. A classic Speyside profile that will beguile some and leave others wanting. 40% Alc./Vol.

"...a major component of the Haig blend. Five years after DCL closed Knockdhu, it was acquired by Inver house Distillers Ltd, who reopened it, and in 1993 began to market its single malt under the An Cnoc label, thus avoiding confusion with the fellow Speysider Knockando. The ‘entry level’ 12-year-old offers a pretty, sweet, floral nose, and water releases clear barley notes. Medium bodied, with a whiff of delicate smoke, spices and boiled sweets on the palate. Drier in the mouth than the nose suggests. The finish is quite short and rapidly drying. Some people rave about this as one of the quintessential Speyside malts.
