The Glenrothes distillery, built in 1878 and enlarged in 1963 and 1980, lies beside the burn of Rothes in the heart of Speyside. For generations the Glenrothes Single malt has enjoyed the highest reputation for its soft, well rounded taste and has long been recognised by distillers and blenders as a Highland malt of outstanding quality. A significant proportion of Glen Rothes has traditionally been reserved for Berry Bros & Rudd of London, (who trace their origins to the 1690s) for use in their famous ‘Cutty Sark’ blend. Recently, the distinguished wine and spirit merchants have commenced setting aside a small quantity of Glenrothes to be matured in oak casks until such a time as it is judged to be at its best.

The Glenrothes Vintage Malt is the product of one year of distillation. Unlike wine, where climate is key in determining the quality of the vintage, with Single Malts it is the quality of the wood used in the oak casks which is of greatest influence. Normally ageing is between 10 and 16 years after distillation, producing a malt characterised by a fruity, spicy nose and a heathery-honeyed palate. On rare occasions, this ageing process can be longer, producing classics with dried fruit character and exceptional mellowness. This rare bottling displays a reddish-golden colour. There are traces of rich fruit on the nose and its delightful palate combines oak, fruit and liquorice. 43% Alc./Vol. Available only in limited quantities.
