ABV: 47%

Stranahan's marks the first micro distillery making whiskey in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains, as well as being one of the first of a growing number of micro distilleries around the U.S. (the last count we heard was around 200). The distillery is named after minority owner, educator and activist George Stranahan, who also owns the Flying Dog Brewery. Jess Graber, retired firefighter, is the majority partner and founder of the company.

The whiskey is made from a unique four-barley fermented wash that consists of carbon filtered Rocky Mountain water and western barley that is grown in the Northern Rockies. The wash is distilled in a Vendome Copper custom-made combination Pot / Column still and then aged in 50 gallon heavily charred (#4 char) American white oak whiskey barrels. The whisky ages for between two and five years in a humidified, climate controlled environment. Ten to twelve barrels are combined to make each batch consisting of 2500-3000 bottles. As with many other small batch producers, each label is hand written identifying the distiller, batch number, the youngest barrel in the batch plus a 'unique comment'.

Our current shipment is a miniscule quantity of Batch # 8, rated 94 points by Jim Murray in his 2011 Whisky Bible.

Tasting note: Pale gold appearance. Marshmallows, Turkish delight, cocoa and vanilla - a unique aroma profile that’s very much in the confectionary spectrum. Continues on the palate with an enormous, plush burst of spicy stewed fruits, cinnamon, clove, boiled confectionary and anise. Subtle anise, oregano and cracked pepper aftertaste. A unique whisky experience. 47%
