  This is the first South African single grain whisky, produced in Wellington at the James Sedgwick distillery, and it's made an impressive debut, In the UK, it was awarded a Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2010 and a Silver at the International Spirits Competition before being crowned with the title of "World's Best Grain Whisky" at the World Whisky Awards. Not bad at all!

  Other reviews... South Africa may be home to an increasingly impressive wine industry — and a noted brandy producer — but the country is also home to two whisky distilleries. Drayman’s in Pretoria is run by brewer Moritz Kallmeyer, while the James Sedgwick distillery in Wellington is home to Three Ships and Bain’s Cape Mountain Grain. Bain’s was created by distiller Andy Watts as a way to attract the new, female drinker. Sweet and succulent, this is like an alcohol ice cream sundae — fudge chunks, toffee, and butterscotch syrup, not to mention the ice cream, You pile on the pounds just smelling it. A lush beauty.

  Another continent, another whisky! This one distilled by Andy Watts at the James Sedgwick distillery in Wellington and aged in American oak casks. Officially launched in 2003 as a limited release, it's South Africa's first single malt. Three more have followed, each to commemorate the pioneering voyages of Bartholomew Diaz, Vasco da Gama and Jan van Riebeeck respectively in a special collector's series. We have the latter release.

  ...South Africa’s most established distillery now makes Scotch-style single malt whisky that the country can be proud of. The downside is that it plays it safe, and the flavors on offer are subdued and subtle. That said though, there’s plenty to like here — delicate floral notes including rose, with a rich and honeyed heart, traces of exotic fruits including kumquat and kiwi, wispy smoke, and some cinnamon and paprika. Solid.
